Beatrice Pugh Frazier, 87, of Crozet, died on Sunday, September 26, 2010, at a local hospital., She was born in Nelson County on February 21, 1923, the daughter of the late Vinton and Rosa Baber Pugh. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Vernon Frazier; and a number of brothers and sisters., Mrs. Frazier was a long- time member of Crozet Baptist Church., She is survived by her son, Jeffrey Frazier and his wife, Mary, of Crozet., A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, September 30, 2010, at Crozet Baptist Church with the Reverend David Collyer officiating. Ben Leroy Adams VIRGINIA BEACH - Retired U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Ben Leroy Adams, 81, passed away Sept. 25, 2010. He is survived by his loving wife, Monique and son, Frank of Virginia Beach, and his daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Kirk Hubbard, of Polson, Mont. A Montana native, he was born April 12, 1929, the seventh of eight children to Frank and Fannie Judkins Adams in Havre, and grew up and graduated from high school in Whitefish. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1948. Cmdr. Adams served with distinction for more than 30 years, and was a veteran of Korea, where he was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation. He also served in Vietnam in 1968-69, where he earned the Bronze Star, and both a Presidential and a Naval Unit Citation. A "Mustang," he retired in 1977 with, among other honors, a Joint Service Commendation medal. During his naval career, Commander Adams served aboard the following ships: Leary, Juneau, St. Paul, Wrangell and Wilkinson. In Vietnam he served in Saigon and Danang, and as officer in charge in Cua Viet. He retired in Naples, Italy, after serving there in three consecutive NATO commands. Pen pals for five years, Ben and Monique were then married for 56 years and made a home for their family in Italy, England and France in addition to the United States. They shared a love of nature and animals and enjoyed hiking and camping. The family thanks the staff of Sentara Bayside Hospital for their compassionate care. Cremation and Funeral Services of Tidewater is assisting the family. A local service is not planned, as interment will take place at a later time in France. Born Sept. 17, 1950, at Richlands, she was the daughter of the late James Sherman and Carrie Lamie Keen. She was a hard working mother and made sure her children were provided for. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Hunnell; and four brothers, James Sherman Keen Jr., Danny Ray Keen, Ricky Alford Keen and Timothy Marcus Keen. She is survived by three daughters, Ann Marie Lester and husband Billy Joe of Abingdon, Holly Lee Weitzel and husband James of Hilton Head, S.C., and Christine Lynn Hunnell of Bristol Virginia; one sister, Kitty Darlene Keen of Richlands; five brothers, Clifford Wayne Keen and wife Bonnie of Pounding Mill, Va., Dennis Ellis Keen and wife Terry of Richlands, Robert Howard Keen and wife Cathy of Richlands, Joey Darrell Keen and wife Jessie of Pikeville, Ky., and Randy Lee Keen and wife Kathy of Claypool Hill, Va.; special granddaughter whom she raised, Alexis McKay Coleman of Martinsville, Va.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. FAHRNEY, Charles Edward, 89 of Harrisonburg, Va., died September 28, 2010. He was born March 18, 1921, the son of the late Lester Bryan and Viola Stark Fahrney. He was a salesman for American Tobacco Company in Durham, N.C. before retiring. He was a member of the Lutheran church. He was a 32nd degree Mason with Mt. Jackson Lodge 103, and a Blue Lodge member. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Sara Matthews. Surviving are sons, Matthew Fahrney of Frisco, Texas, Jimmie Haun Fahrney of Douglasville, Ga., and Charles Edward Fahrney Jr. of Morristown, Tenn.; brother, Merlin L. Charlotte M. Tucker

Charlotte Maria Tucker died peacefully at home on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, in Carson, Va., surrounded by her loving family., Born Charlotte Maria Ritter on Oct. 11, 1929, in Stuttgart-Unteruerkheim, Germany, to Jakob Konrad and Maria Pauline Ritter, she was the third of four children. She married her husband, Lawrence M. Tucker in 1953. Charlotte retired after 45 years of working for the federal government as a civil service employee in various assignments in Europe and the United States, finally settling in Carson, Va., with her family. During her civil service career, she received countless commendations and awards. She also served as the senior advisor for the, Wives Association. Charlotte was a devoted, loyal and trusted friend. Her family was a constant source of joy and happiness for Charlotte over the years. A consummate cook and homemaker, everyone whose life she touched was filled with her love and devotion. She also enjoyed reading and swimming, as well as spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jakob Ritter and Maria Ritter (nee Marquart); her sister, Lotte Ritter; her brother, Eric Ritter, who died during the siege of Stalingrad in 1942; and a loving grandson, Jack Tucker., She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, retired U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Lawrence M. Tucker of Carson, Va.; son, Lawrence M. Tucker Jr. of Williamsburg, Va.; son, Martin W. Gholson and Eugene Walker., She leaves to cherish her memories, a son, James G. Clarence Burton Gerhardt

Clarence Burton Gerhardt Clarence Burton Gerhardt, 82, died peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010. Burton, as he was known by his family and friends, was born in Lynchburg on July 2, 1928. He was the son of Earl A. Gerhardt and Georgia Burton Gerhardt. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, graduating with an engineering degree in 1949 as a member of the Corp of Cadets. He received his master's degree in business administration from Harvard Business School in 1953. Burton served his country for more than 35 years as a member of the United States Army Reserves, attaining the rank of Major. Burton was a man of great energy and had many interests and talents. He served until 1972 as President of Lynchburg Hosiery Mills, a part of Lynchburg's industrial history, which at one time employed almost 1,200 city residents. Burton was a professional engineer and continued to work until just recently as President of The Gerhardt Corporation, an engineering and land company, and of Gerhardt Advisors Inc., a financial advisory firm. He particularly enjoyed his involvement in the community. He served as a Co-Chairman of the Lynchburg Interracial Committee in the 1960s. Burton was a member and a past President of the Lynchburg Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow, having joined the club more than 50 years ago. Over the years, he served on the Boards of the Lynchburg Historical Foundation Inc., Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra, the Lynchburg Mental Health Board, the Boy Scouts of America and the Presbyterian Cemetery. He was a member and Elder emeritus at The First Presbyterian Church and devoted 20 years as a Sunday school teacher. For many years, he was a licensed private pilot and pursued his love of the outdoors tending to Burnbrae Farm in Forest. He had a passion for spending time with his grandchildren, all of whom would regularly join him at work on their school breaks. He often said that he learned much more from them than they would ever learn from him. Burton was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Ann Grant Gerhardt; his sister, Anne G. Lenhert; and his daughter-in-law, Maureen B. Gerhardt. He is survived by his son, Edward B. Gerhardt, and fianc‚e, Lori Cannon, of Greensboro, and his children, Margaret and John; his son, Paul W. Gerhardt, and his wife, Charlotte, of Williamsburg, and their children, Catherine, Augusta and Ann Burton; and his brother, E. Alvin Gerhardt Jr. and wife, Sally. Internment will be a private family service. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. Oct. 1, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive visitors in the narthex following the service. David Breslauer

David C. Breslauer SUFFOLK - David C. Breslauer passed away surrounded by his family on Sept. 26, 2010 at home in Suffolk after a battle with cancer. He was 76. Dave was born in Orange, N.J., in 1934 to the late Edward J. and Frances C. Breslauer. He lived in Portsmouth for 22 years before moving to Suffolk in 1982. Mr. Breslauer served in the Navy during the Korean War from 1952-56 on the USS Ticonderoga aircraft carrier. After serving in the Navy, Dave stayed in the Norfolk area where he met his wife Mae Boykin. Dave was the vice president of Planning, Estimating and Purchasing for Associated Naval Architects in Portsmouth, where he was a dedicated and proud employee for 45 years before retiring in 2005. He was a member of Elizabeth Manor Country Club and the Retired Seniors Golf Association. His family and friends will remember him as a loving husband, father and Paw-Paw who was always willing to help people and whose generosity reached many. He was predeceased by his brothers, Gerald and Donald. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mae Boykin Breslauer; one son, D. Michael "Brez" Breslauer and his wife Robin of Suffolk; three granddaughters, Trisha, Tori and Carroll; two brothers, Edward (Noreen) and Joseph; three sisters, Dorothy Day, Mary Frances Feeley and Kathleen Brennan (Bill). He is also survived by his sisters- in-law, Charlotte Fedro (Roger) and Kathleen Hinnant; brothers-in-law, Jay Boykin (Silene) and Jimmy F. Boykin. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home, 3225 Academy Ave., Portsmouth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church, High St., Portsmouth, on Friday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Jonathan Goertz officiating. David Campbell Gayle NORFOLK - David Campbell Gayle, 19, of Norfolk, passed away unexpectedly in Blacksburg, on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010. He was a 2009 graduate of Norfolk Collegiate School, where he was an outstanding student and athlete. He was a sophomore at Virginia Tech where he studied political science and planned to attend law school. Dave, his dad, Don and uncle Nick were avid hunters and fishermen. He shot his first bear at the age of 13. He is survived by his parents, Dr. Robert G. "Bob" and Kim Gayle. He leaves behind his brother, Donald Ross Gayle and his girlfriend Rebecca Golding; his brother, Robert William "Billy" Gayle; his sister, Laura Hadley Gayle; maternal grandmother, Evelyne Campbell Parker; paternal grandfather, retired U.S. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Gordon Donald Gayle; aunts, Susan Gayle Barnes, Odette Louise Campbell, Sonila Silva Campbell, Katherine Decker Gayle and Melody Campbell; uncles, Michael A. Gayle, Dutch Campbell and Doug Campbell and cousins, Matthew, Emily, Anne, Stephen, Sarah, Jamie, Chuck, Brittany, Chad, Katie, Douglas and Taylor. In addition, he leaves behind his beloved uncle Nick and aunt Helene, their children Nicki and Andrea; loving girlfriend of three years, Liz Moody and her family Will, Claire and Mac and many friends who have become a part of our family. He was predeceased by his grandfather, Frederick Hadley Campbell Jr. and grandmother, Katherine Frank Gayle. HUGHES, David M., age 41, of Richmond, Va., passed away September 25, 2010. David graduated from Highland Springs High School in 1987 and attended Shaw University, where he ran track. He was employed by Andrews International as a Lieutenant Officer, stationed at St. Catherine's School, where he was loved and will be missed by many. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles E. Hughes Jr. David leaves to cherish his loving memory his mother, Joanna Haliday; brother, Charles E. Hughes III (Karen); two sisters, Janice B. Hairston (Curtis) and Anna H. Walker (Ernest); nine nieces, a nephew, aunts, uncles and a host of cousins. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3300 R St., Richmond, Va. 23223. David W. Dixon Sr. NORFOLK - Retired Capt. David W. Dixon Sr., 92, passed away on Sept. 23, 2010. Born in Morehead City, N.C., he was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Dorothy Dixon and by a son, Billy L. Dixon. He is survived by four daughters, Ruby, Frances (Cookie), Pauline (Sugie) and Barbara; three sons, David, Johnny and Randy Dixon Sr.; 10 grandchildren; and countless great-grandchildren and other family members. He served honorably for the Army/Air Force during World War II. He was captain at Harrison's Charter Boat Service for 56 years and retired as the captain of the Dixie Lee II charter boat. A memorial service will be held Monday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Ocean View Pier (formerly Harrison's Pier) with Pastor Charles Stover officiating. Dianne Fox VIRGINIA BEACH - Dianne Fox, 66, passed away Sept. 24, 2010 in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Dianne was born in Aberdeen, N.C., the daughter of the late Harvey Simons and Kathryn Braisington Simons. She was a retired export manager for Carolina Shipping Company. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Paul V. Fox Jr.; a daughter, Carey D. Fox; two sons, Steve Sutton (Patey Sue), Gary Sutton (Tina); five grandchildren; three sisters, Cindy DelCampo (Nick), Vickie Goff (Marvin), Martha Lyn Simons; seven nieces; and nine nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Patsy Pfister. The family extends a special thank you to Drs. Donald Lee Parker CHESAPEAKE - On Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, the good Lord chose to bring home one of his best soldiers to help guard his kingdom. Sgt. Donald Lee Parker, "Donnie Buck" or "Donnie Jr.," left this world to go to a much better one. He was the apple of his father's eye and joy in his mother's heart. Donald had many friends and was loved for his ability to make people laugh. He has left behind many broken hearts. Donald is survived by his parents, Donnie and Maureen Parker and Phyllis and Mike Franklin; grandparents, Delbert Parker and Josephine McGee; brothers, Nick, Mikey (Danielle) and Ronnie (Shannon); sisters, Crystal (Chris), Jen (Keith), Michele (Mike), Gillian and Michelle. He is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews who adored "Uncle Donald," by his very large extended family from his dad, Mike and his mom, Maureen and his little "Pork Chop" Clay. Donald loved his country and served it well. He is a veteran of the Iraq War wearing his injuries like a badge. He gave his best so we could be free. His family is so proud of his accomplishments and his dedication to the Army. Those who knew him well felt his love and loyalty. Donald was also an employee of the Virginia Beach City Schools for the last 10 years. A celebration of Donald's life will be held Saturday, Oct. 2, at 1 p.m. at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. She is survived by one son, Troy Preuss and wife, Angela, of Thaxton, VA; one sister, Mary Bandy of Bandy, VA; one brother, Mack Bandy of Bandy, VA; and three grandchildren, Jessika Fivecoat, Justin Preuss and Joey Preuss. Edgar Clyde Colley CEDAR BLUFF, Va. Mr. Edgar Clyde Colley, age 67, passed away Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, in a Richlands hospital following a sudden illness. He was born in Buchanan County and was the son of the late Bruce and Doshia Coleman Colley. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a retired miner from Colley Coal Company. He was a graduate of Honaker High School Class of 1960 and received his bachelor's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a, Vietnam veteran having been stationed on the USS Independence. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Sandra Colley; one sister, Mildred Colley; and two brothers, Jessie Coleman and Dempsey Colley. Survivors are: two daughters, Jeani Tetlow and husband, Roman of Claypool Hill, Va., Misty Deel and husband, Matthew of Wardell, Va.; two sons, Mark Colley of Stuart, Fla., Timothy Colley of Stanton, Va.; five sisters, Fern Suits of Evergreen, Ala., Ruth Schulz of Macon, Ga., Shirley Hackett of Piney Flats, Tenn., Sara Miller of Honaker, Va., and Emalene Cook of Lebanon, Va.; one brother, Billy Colley of Honaker; special friend, Ruth Marshall; five grandchildren, Michael Paul Hodges, Mikayla Vandyke, Adrianna Hodges, Jordan Vandyke, Derek Deel. Cartrette, a casualty of World War II, and James M. Mishoe who died in 1999. She retired from the Giant Open Air Market and was one of the original members of St. Andrews United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Ronald J. Cartrette and his wife Patricia of Rockledge, Fla.; a son-in-law, Kenneth S. Moore of Suffolk; six grandchildren including Kenneth M. Culpepper and wife Anwhitney of Atlanta, Rhonda C. Chaffin and husband Senior Chief Todd Chaffin of Kailua, Hawaii, Col. Eric H. Froehlich and wife Stephanie of Dumfries, Va., Julie A. Edward Russell Blackburn Edward Russell Blackburn, 85, of Pecan Street, Pamplin, died Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at his residence. He was the husband of Florence Burrows Blackburn. Born in Darlington Heights on Nov. 21, 1924, he was the son of the late Edmond Spencer and Margaret Elizabeth Neely Blackburn. Edward was a member of Elon Baptist Church and a 32 degree Mason since 1948. He was a 64-year member of Southside Masonic Lodge #191 A.F. & A.M., the Warwick Chapter #80 Royal Arch Masons in Newport News, the Scottish Rite, the Pamplin Chapter Order of Eastern Star #58 and a former member of the Pamplin Town Council. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and received the Purple Heart. For 32 years, Edward worked all over the United States, South Africa and Saudi Arabia until his retirement from Chicago Bridge and Iron Co. She was a talented artist having studied art in Baltimore and later here in Suffolk. Growing up on Pinner Street, Esta was very knowledgeable about Suffolk history and Suffolk families. In her younger days she taught ballroom dancing, and she enjoyed teaching her grandchildren how to dance. She enjoyed gardening and watching the songbirds in her yard. In addition to her paintings she did needlepoint and provided many beautiful pieces of her needlework to her children and grandchildren. She was born May 26, 1908, to the late George Archibald Rockefeller and Kate Miller Rockefeller in Cardinal, Mathews County, Virginia. She spent the last 100 years of her life in Norfolk, and graduated from Maury High School. She was a lifelong member of the Church of the Epiphany in Norfolk where she taught Sunday school for more than 50 years. She was active in the Circle of Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters and the Episcopal Church Home for Elderly Women. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Carrie R. Orem, Alice R. Bridgers Downs, Mildred Rockefeller; and her brothers, George A. Rockefeller, William A. Rockefeller and Edward G. Rockefeller. She is survived by her son, Porter H. Mason Jr. of Virginia Beach and her daughter, Katie L. Jones and her husband Lee of Norfolk. "Mama Katie" is also survived by grandchildren, Linmore L. Jones III of Richmond, Clayton M. During her 50-plus years as a member of Fairfield Presbyterian Church, she served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, elder, and president of Women of the Church. Despite her years of medical and physical challenges, she stayed active and enjoyed traveling with her husband and some special friends and spending time with her family, especially at the river. Henry was predeceased by his brother Thomas Straughan Privett; his sisters, Helen Tayloe and Anna Doris Grantham; and his son, Russell Lee Privett Sr. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jeanne Mero Privett; a son, H. Vaughan Privett and daughter-in-law Sharon S. Privett of Norfolk; a daughter-in-law, Ann P. Privett of Salvo, N.C.; a daughter, Linda Privett Robinson and husband James T. Robinson of Chesapeake. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Melissa P. McCormick and husband John, Russell Lee Privett Jr. of Durham, N.C., Barry Privett of Richmond, LeeAnn Privett of Hickory, N.C., Shari Robinson of Chesapeake, Elizabeth R. Culpepper and husband Wayne of Portsmouth, Adam Robinson and wife Ashley of Portsmouth, Kevin Robinson of Washington, D.C.; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Born in Portsmouth, Henry was a loving and caring family man. At age 17, he went to sea with his grandfather and later went on to join the Merchant Marines. Despite his love of the sea, he returned home to join his father in the grocery business where he stayed until retiring in 1982. During that time he was active in the Portsmouth Retail Grocers Association. He and his wife retired to Hatteras Island with their son, Russell, and his family to run a local bait and tackle shop. He was an active member of the NCBBA and Salvo Volunteer Fire Department and spent countless hours in his workshop creating an endless array of toys, knick knacks and whirligigs for his family and friends to enjoy. The family would like to thank the staff of Senior Corps, with a special thanks to Juanita Jacobs, for allowing him the opportunity to maintain his independence. There will be a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 29, at Foster Funeral Home in Portsmouth and a celebration of his life on Thursday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. at Foster Funeral Home. Davidson; and a special sister-in-law, Ann E. Campbell. Margaret Elizabeth Brown Hantzmon died peacefully after a short battle with cancer on Sunday, September 26, 2010., Peggy was born on October 15, 1933, in Bluefield, West Virginia, to the late Margaret Elizabeth Lazenby Brown and Clark Moore Brown., After growing up in Bluefield and Richlands, Virginia, she graduated from Richlands High School in 1950 and Westhampton College (The University of Richmond) in 1954. During her college summers, Peggy was a camp counselor at Camp Wawenock, Lake Sebago, Maine, where she taught archery and was the camp bugler. Not only was she an acclaimed archer, but Peggy also played basketball and field hockey in high school and college and was an avid swimmer as well. After college, she taught math at Culpeper High School before enrolling in graduate school (education) at the University of Virginia., After graduate school, Peggy worked at People's National Bank in Charlottesville before marrying Richard Van Emon Hantzmon on May 7, 1960. After marriage, she devoted herself to full-time motherhood of her three sons., She was also very active in her church, Wesley Memorial United Methodist, volunteered at Greenbrier Elementary, and enjoyed swimming laps during the summer at Fairview Swim Club., She is survived by her husband, Van Hantzmon of Charlottesville; her children, Stephen Van Emon Hantzmon and Jennifer B. Green of Durham, North Carolina, and their children, Sarah Virginia Hantzmon and Andrew Foster Hantzmon; Richard Clark Hantzmon and James R. Carnes of Charlottesville; and Matthew Wesley Hantzmon and Jennie Jane Hantzmon of Charlottesville and their children, Matthew Wesley Hantzmon Jr., William Clark Hantzmon, John Stephen Hantzmon and Thomas Treganowan Hantzmon., She is also survived by her sister, Sue Clark Brown Tapp and her husband, James D. On Monday, September 27, 2010, our beloved mother, Mariah Ellen Trainum, 79, left this earth to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She passed away in Charlottesville, Virginia, at her home after a lengthy illness., Ellen was born to the late William Elwood Fincham Sr. and Ruby Gibson Fincham at the University of Virginia Medical Center and spent her early childhood in Louisa, Virginia., Also preceding her in death was her husband of 58 years, Vernon A. "Dumpy" Trainum Sr.; a son, Vernon A. Trainum Jr., as well as siblings Ruby Garnett, Mildred Draper, Margie Sprouse, James Fincham, and William "Junior" Fincham., Ellen is survived by her sons, John W. Trainum Sr. and his wife, June, of Stanardsville, Walter F. Trainum and his wife, Victoria, of Charlottesville, daughter, Rebecca T. Wickline and her husband, Dennis, of Charlottesville; one sibling, Shirley F. Brown of Charlottesville; and two very special people who lived with and cared for her until the end, Wayne and Debbie Shiflett ., Ellen loved children and was blessed to have six grandchildren, Dana Watson, John Trainum Jr., Shelley Ward, April Trainum, Shaun Wickline, and Erica Trainum; as well as six great-grandchildren who loved her with all of their heart., All of her life, Ellen had a strong work ethic and was employed by the Standard Drug store as well as the Lloyd's Rexall in Charlottesville during her early adult years. Melvin E. Mattson Melvin E. Mattson, a resident of Falls Church, Virginia for over 40 years, died at his home in Gainesville, Virginia Monday, September 27, 2010 after a lengthy illness., He was born in 1926 to Swedish immigrants in Gardner, Massachusetts. The family moved to New York City, and he graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1943, number 26 out of a class of 260. He went on to attend the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. His first trip to sea was in 1945 as an engineering cadet and, over the next few years, he made several more trips to sea as an assistant engineer on merchant ships. In 1948, he activated his commission as an ensign in the Navy Reserve and went on active duty as a division officer on the U.S.S. Juno., He left the navy in 1950, married Joyce Wild in 1952, and received a Bachelor's degree in mathematics from George Washington University in 1954. In 1960, he began working at the Department of the Interior, where he became an expert on water desalination and reverse osmosis. He did a lot of job-related traveling throughout his entire career and retired from the government in 1984. For many years afterwards, he continued to work part time as a tax preparer for H and R Block, and later as a volunteer tax preparer through AARP. He was a dedicated runner since the 1970's and was regularly ranked as one of the top runners in his age group by the Washington Running Report., He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce in 2004. He is survived by a sister, seven children, 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren., The family will receive friends from 3:00-4:00 P.M. She was also predeceased by a son, Ronald Reese Jr. and a stepbrother, Gurvis Jr. Nancy lived most of her adult life in New York. Nancy was a trustee of The Police Boys Club, financial secretary and treasure while serving as a charter member of The 100 Black Women, and a member of the National Convention of Gospel and Choruses. Nancy retired from Nassau County Department of Recreation in 1994 after heading that position for 31 years. Nancy remained a member of Greater Second Baptist Church in Freeport, N.Y., until moving to Virginia were she became a member and trustee of New Galilee in Chesapeake. Left to cherish her memory is her husband, James Nicholson; two children, Tunja Washington and Gina Hussain; a stepson, James Nicholson III; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Davenport and daughter Lavino; two stepsisters, Berneda, Chiquita; a stepbrother, Michael; and a large extended family. Peter Edward Roy Dickinson, Peter Edward Roy Dickinson, 61, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 25, 2010, due to complications of Huntington's Disease., Born in London, England, Peter grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and graduated from Cincinnati Country Day School. He went on to graduate from the University of Virginia School of Commerce, class of 1972. He obtained his CPA and was a solo practitioner for many years, well-known for his expertise as well as his sense of humor. He was active in numerous professional and civic organizations., Peter was a picture of faith and grace under fire. He valiantly battled Huntington's Disease for over 15 years. Under these most difficult circumstances, Peter maintained a positive, prayerful, and thankful attitude. He managed to focus on the glass half full and not dwell on his many losses. He leaves many to cherish his example and memory., The family wishes to thank the many people who assisted Peter in his journey: in particular, Trinity Presbyterian Church members Bill Cassidy, Carlton Dixon, and Gary Hougan, who provided years of companionship and service. We are also very grateful for the loving care of RoseWood Village over these last two years. Steve Wise

Steve Robert Wise ABINGDON, Va. Steve Robert Wise, 95, died at his home at 111 West Main St., on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Mr. Wise was born in Washington County in 1915, the second son of 10 children of George Wiley and Emma Roberts Wise. He began work at the age of eight with his brothers, pulling wool off sheep to sell to local merchants. He set up small businesses at county fairs to help provide for his family and at the age of 16 entered the Civilian Conservation Corps, headquartered at Pembroke, Va. Mr. Wise established Abingdon's first town transportation system, Steve's Cabs, in 1945. He later was a partner in the Bristol-Jenkins Bus Lines and became the owner of the Trailways-Greyhound Bus Depot in Abingdon in the 1960s. Mr. Wise was a farmer, a court appraiser and a real estate, land and tobacco auctioneer. He also owned and operated four restaurants and a variety of other businesses during his life. Mr. Wise served his country in the, during, . He is survived by his bride of 70 years, Inez Patterson Wise; and a daughter, Joyce Wise Dodd. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Stuart Wise, in 2004. He was beloved by nephew, Edward A. Fagin of Newport Beach, Calif.; and a niece, Patricia Wise Butkovich of Mt. Pulaski, Ill. Funeral services for Mr. Wise will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with Fr. Craig Wylie officiating. Interment will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park. Friends are invited to greet family at Farris Funeral Service from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening. Pallbearers will be Tim Thompson, Craig Thompson, Ben Smith, SamWoolwine, Rick Humphreys and James "Beau" Briscoe. Honorary pallbearers will be Hanna W. Briscoe, Kerney Timmons, Mary Thompson, Dr. James Gardner, Doris Clendenen Shuman, Robert Weisfeld, Del. Joe Johnson, Rep. Rick Boucher and Stuart Larkey. Thomas Sitz BLACKSBURG - Thomas Orr Sitz, age 65, of Blacksburg, Va., died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born in Newport, R.I., Dec. 9, 1944 to the late John Harry and Margaret McCullough Sitz. Dr. Sitz recently retired from Virginia Tech and was granted Professor Emeritus. He was associate professor of biochemistry and anaerobic microbiology in the College of Agriculture and Life Science, and director of premedical studies. He was the recipient of the Alumni Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising in 1982. Dr. Sitz was president of the Virginia Academy of Science in 1995 until 1996. He received a B.S. in Biology from Virginia Tech in 1967 and a Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1971. Dr. Sitz received a prestigious post-doctoral appointment at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston under Dr. Harris Busch and was later appointed to a faculty position from 1971 until 1975. He then was a member of the Chemistry Department at Old Dominion University in Norfolk where he continued his research from 1975 to 1982. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Crabtree Sitz of Blacksburg; daughter and son-in-law, Molly Sitz Moore and husband Rear Admiral Scott P. Moore of Virginia Beach; sisters, Lucy Aginiga of Chula Vista, Calif., Margaret Cullifer of Hatteras, N.C.; brother, John Sitz of Ocracoke, N.C.; grandchildren, Rachel Laughlin Moore, Sarah Buckley Moore, Thomas Dewey Moore IV. The family wishes to thank Dr. Harry McCoy, Dr. David Stoeckle, Dr. Alex Tan, Dr. Edwin Wilder, the nurses and staff at Montgomery Regional Hospital as well as family, friends and the Issac Walton League for their care and support. He played on the Woodbridge Little League team, the Jazz traveling team and the Woodbridge Senior High School Varsity team, where he was named MVP as a senior., The 2002 graduate of WSHS attended Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, W.Va., and played for the Shepherd Rams as pitcher for three years. He also worked at Domino's Pizza in Woodbridge and Shepherdstown during college., At the age of 23, Todd suffered critical injuries from a car accident, from which he worked hard to recover. He excelled in various jobs before finding a career path at Giant Food in Lakeridge and Hamilton Iron Works in Woodbridge., Throughout childhood, high school and college, Todd formed lifelong friendships and enriched lives. William P. Wolcott NORFOLK - William Putnam Wolcott, M.D., passed away in his parent's home in Norfolk Aug. 19, 2010. Putnam was born in Norfolk July 9, 1963. Putnam attended Norfolk Academy and Christ School in North Carolina. Putnam graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1986. He attended the Medical College of Virginia and graduated in 1992. He completed a surgical residency in neurosurgery at University of Virginia in 1999 and a spine Fellowship at the University of Alabama. He practiced neurosurgery in Newport News. Putnam enjoyed boating, hunting and other outdoor activities. His mother precedes him in death. He leaves behind a son, his father, three sisters and a brother.
