Anna Byrd Wheaton Dr. Anna Byrd Wheaton, RN, RRA, born Nov. 13, 1910, in Bronx, N.Y., passed away peacefully Sept. 3, 2010, at 5:30 a.m. at the Keystone Rehab. & Health Center in Kissimmee, Fla. She was the widow of Philip W. Eastman (1968) and later of the Rev. Dr. Richard A. Wheaton (1994). She moved to Kissimmee in 2002 from Concord and joined St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church. During her stay in Virginia, she was a member of the First St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Rustburg. She leaves to cherish the memory of her love and caring a daughter, Dr. Ann Y. Tyler; grandchildren, Annette and William Ellison, Robert Tyler and Deandre Davis; a god-daughter, Anna M. Pinellas; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-grands, in-laws, family and friends. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at the First St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Rustburg, with the Rev. Dr. Jack Wilson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m. The cortege will assemble at the church. Beryle Rutherford Beryle Rutherford, 89, joined her husband, Virgil, on Sept. 7, 2010, in a place she described as, "more beautiful than any land she could imagine." In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Earl Anderson; and sister, Mamie Nell Anderson. Born in Carter County, Tenn., she spent most of her youth on the family farm in Bluff City. As a young adult, she moved to Bristol, where she lived the next 60 years before relocating to Knoxville and Maryville, Tenn. She was a charter member of Northstar Baptist Church and previously attended Euclid Avenue Baptist Church. As her legacy and joy in life, she leaves two sons, Phil Rutherford, (USPS Retired), and wife Karen (audiologist), of Knoxville, Steve Rutherford (special agent) and wife Karen (teacher) of Maryville, Tenn.; granddaughter, Ashley Rutherford, (BSN) of Knoxville; grandsons, Aaron Rutherford (construction), of Maryville, Todd Rutherford (M.D.) and wife Adina (surgical tech) of Kingston Springs, Tenn.; and two great-grandchildren, Cole and Georgia Rutherford of Kingston Springs. Mrs. Rutherford is survived by her sisters, Valda Simerly of Knoxville, and Irene Cass of Fredericksburg, Va,; brothers, Dana Anderson of Johnson City, Tenn., and Homer Anderson of Land of Lakes, Fla. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 3:30 in the Glenwood Cemetery Mausoleum, with Dr. Bill Houck officiating. Pallbearers will be Gus Simerly, Homer Anderson, Leo Rutherford, Tommy Anderson, Andy Cass, John Cass, David Simerly and Dana Anderson. Betty Jean "BJ" Minton, 65, died on Thursday, September 2, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center., Betty Jean was born in Abingdon Virginia, on October 12, 1944, to the late Raymond and Doris Aven Minton. She was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Ann Minton Henry., BJ graduated from Abingdon High School and Radford College with a degree in Home Economics. She worked for Virginia Cooperative Extension Service first as a 4-H agent in Nelson County, Virginia, and later as a Home Economist in Greene County, Virginia. She retired after 30 years of service. BJ was active in her community and was a founding member of Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ruckersville., She is survived by her sister, June Minton Smith of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; three nephews, Britton Smith and his wife, Nan, of Kernersville, North Carolina, David L. Henry Jr. and his wife, Christine, of Meadowview, Virginia, and Will R. Henry and his wife, Sara, of Meadowview, Virginia; a brother-in-law, David L. Henry Sr. of Abingdon Virginia; four great-nephews and three great-nieces. Also surviving is her beloved adopted family, Shawn, Rita, Elizabeth and Nicholas Hayes of Stanardsville, Virginia., A memorial service will be held at Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church 11 a.m. Friday, September 10, 2010, by Pastor Jay Sanderford. Dorothy Campbell Bryant Loving Dorothy Campbell Bryant Loving, 93, of Madison Heights, passed away Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, at her residence. She was the loving wife of the late Jacob Lewis Loving Jr. for 39 years. Born July 14, 1917, in Madison Heights, she was a daughter of the late James Oscar Bryant and Jessie Campbell Bryant. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, James Oscar Bryant Jr., Roderick Lee Bryant Sr. and Walter Duncan Bryant. Dorothy was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She graduated from Phillips Business College and was a retired cashier from Central VA Training Center with 28 years of service. She enjoyed reading, cooking for her family, traveling and was known for her beautiful crochet and knitting. She was a member of Amelon United Methodist Church. She leaves to cherish her memory three children, Roderick Lewis Loving and wife, Alice, Dorothy Loving Diuguid and husband, James, and Judy Beth Loving Dudley and husband, Linnie, all of Madison Heights; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Loving Consolla and husband, Mark, of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Brad Loving Diuguid, of Virginia Beach; six great-grandchildren, Joseph Mark Consolla, Jacob Roderick Consolla, Jeffrey Campbell Consolla, of Grand Rapids, Mich., Brennalynn Michele Diuguid, Martin Loving Diuguid, and Matthew Edward Diuguid, of Virginia Beach; Sonia Garcia and her son, Trey, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; sister-in-law, Eunice P. Bryant, of Madison Heights; and other relatives and friends. HICKS, Claude Grafton, 78, of Rockville, Va., passed away peacefully September 8, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Jeanette. He is survived by his two sons, C.G. Hicks and his wife, Becky, and John Linwood Hicks; two grandchildren, Chad and Katie Hicks; one sister, Ruby Gentry; a devoted nephew, Vincent Hutchinson (Brandy, Cassidy and Andrew). Claude was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves. He was a past employee of The Virginia Dairy and retired from Richfood. He was a Korean War veteran. Dennis Dale Davis, Dennis Dale Davis, 54, of Highland Springs, Virginia, formerly of Orange, Virginia, died suddenly on Friday, September 3, 2010, in Richmond, Virginia., A brother, David Hamilton Davis, who Dennis was devoted to helping, preceded Dennis in death a short eight months ago. Dennis was a constant family member at David's bedside during David's final months and days. His father, Thomas J. Davis of Orange, Virginia, also preceded Dennis in death., Dennis was born on November 2, 1955, in Charlottesville, Virginia, to Eunice Ruth Lohr and the late Thomas J. Davis of Orange, Virginia., Dennis is survived by his mother, Eunice Ruth Lohr of Orange, Virginia; the mother of his children and partner, Tina Brown of Highland Springs, Virginia; and the "lights" of Dennis's life, his two sons, Christopher D. Davis and Thomas W. Davis of Highland Springs, Virginia. Dennis is also survived by his sister, Diane Strong and her husband, Jimmy Strong, of Barboursville, Virginia; and his brothers, Thomas W. Davis and his partner, Lou Cherry, of Suffolk, Virginia, and Phillip C. Davis of Gore, Virginia., Other surviving relatives are his nieces, Susan Strong and her husband, Noah Leiden and their son, Evan, of Purcellville, Virginia, and Karen Strong and her husband, Ramil Ibanez and their sons, Joshua and Jonah of King William, Virginia; his uncles, Billie Davis of Orange, Virginia, Earl Davis of Ruckersville, Virginia, Shirley Davis of Stanardsville, Virginia, and Herbert Davis of Baltimore, Maryland; and his aunts, Mary Shifflett and Marjorie Foster of Madison, Virginia. Dorothy Ann Burge Carter Dorothy Ann Burge Carter, 71, of Morton Lane, Appomattox, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the loving wife of 40 years to Samuel E. Carter. Born Sept. 11, 1938, in Appomattox County, she was a daughter of the late Elizabeth Bell and William Fletcher Burge Sr. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. After 22 years of service, she retired from Central Fidelity Bank, where she was a bookkeeper. In addition to her husband, Dorothy is survived by three sisters, Lelia "Lee" Martin and her husband Dick, Roberta "Bertie" Lee Baird and Louise Roach and her husband, Johnny; one sister-in-law, Eleanor B. Burge, all of Appomattox; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William Fletcher Burge Jr. and Richard Alvin Burge. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, in Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert Thorne and the Rev. Carlton Duck, with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the residence. On Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, in the quietness of the early morning hours, God fulfilled the destiny of our beloved Mrs. Dorothy Virginia Roney Jones, 93, of Petersburg. He carried her into eternal rest., Dorothy was born Monday, March 12, 1917, in Dinwiddie County to the late Samuel and Beatrice Morgan Roney. She was preceded in death by mother, Marie Roney; two husbands, DeQuincy Adams and Edward Jones; son, Reginald Adams; daughter, Doris E. Henderson; four sisters, Inez Roney, Mary Lee Mason, Essie Mae Blackwell and Mildred Pegram; five brothers, William, Lawrence, Fenton, Booker T. and Phillip Roney; and grandson, Alfred "Peter" Roney., She spent her 93 years as a daughter, sibling, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and servant of the Most High God. She gave not only her last but her very best. She served in the church wherever there was a need and fed every hungry mouth she could find. Our most cherished memory is that of answered prayers because she was a mighty prayer warrior. Edward Bishop

BISHOP, Edward "Mac" McDowell, 76, passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2010 in the arms of his wife of 54 years, Diana. During his last hours, he was surrounded by his family and friends. Born in 1934, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Curtis Vance Bishop and Helen McDowell Bishop. Mac had an amazing enthusiasm for life and never gave up on anything, including his struggle with Parkinson's Disease. He was a longtime member of Derbyshire Baptist Church and served in many capacities, including choir member, chairman of the Ministry of Deacons, and Sunday School teacher. He served on the Averett University Board of Directors. He was very involved with Averett University since his father was president of the University for 25 years and he grew up on the campus. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing at Cape Hatteras, hunting, golfing and gardening. He also enjoyed poetry, Shakespearean literature and history. A graduate of the University of Richmond, he was an ROTC student and a member of Phi Kappa Sigma. After graduation, he was a Captain in the U.S. Army Artillery. He then pursued a career at C&P Telephone Company, AT&T and the Virginia State Corporation Commission. Mac was predeceased by his parents; and his brother, Curtis. Mac is survived by his wife, Diana; daughters and sons-in-law, Kay (Peter), Betsy (Barry), Lynne (John); and grandchildren, Josh and wife, Becky, Rachel, Scottie, Curtis, Grayson, Brittan and Ian; and many nieces and nephews. Mac always, and frequently, told his family and friends that the three most important things to him were God, family and country - in that order. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. at Derbyshire Baptist Church, 8800 Derbyshire Road, Richmond, Va. 23229. The family will receive guests following the service. She was 84., Born in Newport, Rhode Island, Eugenia "Jean" was the second of four children born to Constantine Carayiannis and Efstathia Argitis Carayiannis. Both parents were immigrants from Greece. She was raised, along with her three brothers, in Brooklyn, New York, where she graduated high school. She then obtained an associate's degree from Packer Collegiate Institute. Prior to her marriage, she worked for the Motion Picture Institute in New York City. Later she worked for the Stamford engineering firm Combustion Engineering., An industrious and highly motivated student, Jean cultivated a lifelong appetite for books, music, art, and engaging conversation. Throughout her life, Jean's Greek heritage, as well as her Orthodox Christianity, were strong influences and sources of great pride and they remain a part of her family's enduring legacy., A lifelong athlete, Jean enjoyed double's tennis, water aerobics, walking at Cove Beach, and overall wellness into her eighties., Jean was predeceased by her husband, George A. Aretakis., She is survived by her children, Gregory Aretakis of Brookfield, Wisconsin, his wife, Mary, and daughters, Kaitlin and Olivia Jean; Dyan Aretakis of Crozet, Virginia, her husband, Stuart Berr and daughters, Alexandra, Lydia, and Zoe; and Jonathan Aretakis of Pembroke, Maine, his wife Ann Cannizzaro, and son, Emmanuel, and daughters, Lucia and Evyenia. Also surviving her and missing her enormously are nieces, nephews, brotherd-in-law and sisters-in-law. Fred Carlton Turnes "Sarge" Fred Carlton Turnes, 79, of 1609 Melinda Drive, Altavista died Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the devoted husband of Virginia Cothran Turnes for over 59 years. He was born December 22, 1930 in Charlotte County, the son of the late Fannie Daniel Turnes and Thomas Pitzer Turnes. He was a member of New Bethel United Methodist Church and retired as a 1st Sergeant from the Virginia Army National Guard and State Civil Service Virginia Army National Guard. He served his country during the Korean Conflict and worked for many years at the Altavista and Lynchburg National Guard Armories. During his long service, he received the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and Army Reserve Achievement Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a granddaughter, Jessalyn Nicole Burch of Altavista; a brother, Daniel T. Turnes of Richmond; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lauri Lynne Turnes; a brother, Glenwood P. Turnes, Sr.; a sister, Betty Jean Turnes Agner; and a former son-in-law, Robert H. Jean Atkins Jean Atkins, 89, died Sept. 2, 2010, in Tallahassee, Fla. Jean was born on June 16, 1921, in Bristol Tennessee, and grew up in Butler, Tenn. She spent most of her adulthood in Bristol and Kingsport, Tenn. As a young adult, she was the wife of Dr. Al Oxford; and mother of Linda and Brantley Oxford. A lifelong learner, Jean was the salutatorian of her high school class and a 1962 graduate of King College in Bristol. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsport. Jean had a variety of experiences in life, including being an educator, an entrepreneur, a generous volunteer in the Big Sisters Program, and accomplished vocalist, and an avid golfer. She was a worldwide traveler and remained current her entire life. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Nornam Atkins; and her parents, Paul and Lee Goodwin. She is survived by her children, Linda Oxford, of Tallahassee, and Dr. Brant Oxford, of Sedona, Ariz.; her grandchildren are Staci (Thomas) Duggar, of Tallahassee, Kelly (Simon) Rosenberg, Pittsburgh, Bo (Paula) Oxford of Phoenix, and Randy Oxford, of Flagstaff, Ariz.; her great-grandchildren are Elisabeth, Madelynn, Emma Cate, and Thomas Walton Duggar, Collin Rosenberg, and Braden Oxford. She is also survived by her sister, Jo Peterson of Houston; nieces, and great-nieces. Jean spent her last few years in Tallahassee and passed away after a brief illness. While in Tallahassee, she was the beloved Jeanie to her great-grandchildren and was lovingly attended to by her children. The family held a memorial in Tallahassee. CARTER, Miss Mary N., died at Johnston-Willis Hospital on Sunday, September 5, 2010 following a massive stroke. She was born in Sandy Hook, Virginia, on March 21, 1923. Moving to Richmond at an early age, she attended the public schools and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. Afterwards, she was educated at Mary Washington College. Miss Carter worked for the Life Insurance Company of Virginia until she retired to care for her aging parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank W. Carter. Miss Carter's interests were many and varied: serving in different capacities at Tabernacle Baptist Church; traveling throughout the world; gardening; babysitting; and doing needlework of all kinds. In recent years, Miss Carter enjoyed life at Spring Arbor of Salisbury Residential Assisted Living in Midlothian, Virginia, where she kept busy with her friends at worship services, musical programs, exercise classes, baking activities, and afternoon teas. Her loving, sweet, gentle, and generous spirit blessed all those who knew her. They are included as survivors along with her family: Caralie Brown, Diana Chandler and sons, Robert and Michael; Elizabeth N. Clements and daughters, Mary Anne and Carolyn; grandchildren, Edward, Casey, Melissa, Christina and Brittany; and seven great-grandchildren, Steve and Nancye Gaj and son, Carter; Beanie Kelly and children, Paul and Caran; Roland and Louise Metcalf and children, Kimberly and Benson; and Helen Parrish. She was a 60-year resident of Lakeside and was a devoted and caring mother and a faithful volunteer worker at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. She was also a volunteer worker at the former Cathedral High School, The Little Sisters of the Poor and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. She was, for many years, the manager of the Mill Fabric Store in Lakeside. C. Ray Brown Jr. BRISTOL, Tenn. C. Ray Brown Jr., 65, died on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, at his home. He was born in Oak Ridge, Tenn., a son of the late C. Ray and Hazel Peek Brown. He was a graduate of Holston Valley High School and Bristol College. He served in the, from 1965 until 1971 and later served in the U.S. Army Reserve for 21 years. He was the owner and operator of C. Ray Brown Plumbing Company and was of the Baptist faith. Ray deeply loved his family. They returned that love, even by serving as his caregivers until the end. The family wishes to sincerely thank Hospice Nurse, Rochelle Holtzclaw, for her dedication and care. Ray is survived by his loving wife, Vickie Eller Brown; two sons, Travis Brown and C. Ray Brown III; two daughters, Rebecca Watters and her husband Issac and Elizabeth Rosemary Brown; one granddaughter, Ashlyn Brown; two brothers, Ronnie Brown and his wife Shirley and Dewayne Brown; a sister, Pam Millsap; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Saturday evening at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home.
