Alden Ward GRUNDY, Va. Alden Ward,80 years of age, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at the Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness. He was a devoted Christian who loved serving the Lord and helping others. Alden was a coal miner and a member of UMWA Local Union No. 1374. He was a carpenter, plumber, masonry, electrician, gardener and sportsman who enjoyed spending time in the outdoors within the beauty of the world that God created. Alden was a loving husband, father and grandfather who so treasured spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Adnia Stacy Ward; two children, Swanson Donald Ward and Stanley Gary Ward; three brothers, Waldo, Cleon and Victor Ward; one sister, Ellen Ward Keen. Epps Sr., Allen Lewis Epps Sr. son of the late John and Rebecca Spicer Epps, was born on July 17, 1942, in Louisa, Virginia. He departed this life at the Louisa Health Care Rehabilitation Center on Friday, September 10, 2010., Known to his family and close friends as "Dukie", he accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age. He then became a member of the First Baptist Church, under the pastorate of the late Reverend B.D. Ellis. On Sunday mornings, he would walk to Sunday school to be taught the Word of God., His early education was received from the Louisa County School System. After attending Louisa Training School, he lived and worked for many years, as a truck driver in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. BOLTON, Catherine Lee (Corso), went into the presence of the King of kings and Lord of lords Saturday, September 11, 2010. She was a resident of Manakin-Sabot, Va. Cathy was born in Lake Wales, Fla., January 12, 1963. She attended local schools and earned her BSN from Eastern Mennonite College in Harrisonburg, Va. She is survived by her husband, James L. Bolton; and three daughters, Kayla, Kendra and Kara; a sister, Patricia Corso Blasingame of Memphis, Tenn.; and her mother, Marie B. Corso of Richmond, Va. Her father, John M. Corso, preceded her in death. Cathy was employed over 20 years by Henrico Doctors' Hospital, Richmond, Va., in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. She also worked in the Pediatric Department of the hospital earlier in her nursing career. Cathy worshipped at Salem Baptist Church in Goochland, Va. She was a strong supporter and fund-raiser for Salem Christian School, Crozier, Va., spearheading a yearly dinner auction for the school's benefit. A gathering of friends and family, with viewing, will be held at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. He was the son of the late Charles Sr. and Mary Ann Duncan of Goodwill, W.Va. Mr. Duncan was a veteran of the, and proudly served in the South Pacific during, . Before entering the Navy, Mr. Duncan was an active member of the Civilian Conservation Corps where he served in Salmon River, Idaho. He was a member of the, Post in Marion. He worked as a coal miner for 20 years before beginning a successful career as a restaurant owner in 1963. With his wife, Ruth, by his side, he owned and operated the Pioneer Restaurant for 26 years. He retired from the restaurant business in 1999 at the age of 79. He was a member of Brushfork United Methodist Church in Brushfork, W.Va. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Clara Ruth Mitchell Duncan; four brothers, William "Bill" Duncan, George Duncan, Howard Duncan, and Donald Duncan; and six sisters, Ella Petty, Lora Bailey, Frances Phillips, Minnie Arrington, Edna Teat and Maggie Little. HATHCOCK, Dorothy T., died at home near Scottsville, Va. on September 9, 2010 following a long illness. Mrs. Hathcock was the widow of Walter F. Hathcock and was a 37 year resident of Buckingham County, Virginia. She is survived by five children, David R. Hathcock (Jan) of Richmond, Va., Betty Pugh of Midlothian, Va., Vicki Harlow (John) of Suffolk, Va., Beverly Morgan-Fullilove of Virginia Beach, Va. and Frank Hathcock (Kimberly) of Scottsville, Va. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Genevieve Harlow Thompson, Elizabeth Harlow, Cristen Pugh, Cathleen Pugh, and Sara Davidson; a brother, Denton Threet of Port Gibson, Miss.; and a sister, Peggy Threet of Watson, La. At the end of her husband's military career, the family settled on the banks of the James River near Howardsville, Va. Until ill health curtailed her activities, she was an adept quilter, an avid gardener, hunter and fisher. Services will be private. |
Dr. George Moore, Dr. George Moore, MD MPH, 88, retired physician, of White Stone, Virginia, died at his home on Saturday, September 11, 2010., Surviving are his three daughters, Barbara M. Grover of Big Canoe, Georgia, Berwyn M. Brooker of Erie, Pennsylvania, and Devi M. Chancey of Chesapeake, Virginia; and four grandchildren, Aaron Bell Marshall of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Emma Grace Brooker of Erie, Pennsylvania, George Moore Chancey and Benjamin Zeke Chancey of Chesapeake. Also surviving is his sister, Shirley Moore Barnes of Billerica, Massachusetts; his wife, the former Constance Doris Roberts of Syracuse, New York, died on February 16, 2006, and is buried in the English Gardens of Historic Christ Church near Irvington, Virginia. They had been married over 60 years., Dr. George Moore was born in Verona, New Jersey, on September 30, 1921, the oldest son of the Reverend George Moore (born on January 13, 1886 and died on May 23, 1952) and Marian Field Van Nuys (born on August 22, 1894 and died on May 24, 1973). Family cemeteries are at Pottersville, Oldwick and Spruce Run, New Jersey, Immigrant ancestor of 1710 was Johann Jacob Mohr of Nassau, Germany., His service career included tours at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Kathmandu, Nepal, Durango, Colorado, Battle Creek, Michigan, and Charlottesville, Virginia., On retirement from the Public Health Service, he became Director of the Thomas Jefferson District Health Department in Charlottesville, Virginia, and taught at the University of Virginia. In 1977, he accepted an appointment as Associate Professor of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. In 1980, he was appointed as Director of the Northern Neck Health District. He retired from State of Virginia employment in 1984., In his professional career, Dr. Moore published numerous articles on preventive medicine in scientific journals. He was a member of the Association of Military Surgeons, the Commissioned Officers Association of USPHS, the Northern Neck Medical Society, and the Retired Officers Association. He served both as Registrar and Past President of the Richard Henry Lee Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution. In March 2009, Dr. Moore was presented with the United Surgeon General's Lifetime Exemplary Service Award at his home in White Stone., He and his wife were members of the Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church in Weems, Virginia., His guiding principle was: "Happiness comes from within and is based on work well done, on serving others, and in remembering the dignity and worth of human life" (from Thomas M. Durant MD, Professor of Medicine at Temple Medical School, 1947)., At 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 18, 2010, a gravesite committal will be held at the Historic Christ Church near Irvington, Virginia, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church in Weems, Virginia, with the Reverend Clay Macauley officiating. Edna Mabe Cline Edna Mabe Cline, 94, of Rustburg and formerly of Carroll County, passed away Sept. 11, 2010, at Fairmont Crossing long term facility. Born Jan. 17, 1916, to the late Charlie Thomas Mabe and Mary Jane Mabe. She was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church and Campbell County Retired Teachers Association. Edna graduated from Coal Creek High School, Galax. After graduating, she continued her education at Appalachian State Teachers College and the University of Virginia, where she received a Masters of Education. She taught for 34 years, starting out in a one-room school in Woodlawn. After moving to Lynchburg, she continued teaching at Forest Hill Elementary School then Brookville Elementary School and finished her teaching career at Altavista Elementary School. In addition to her parents, Edna is preceded in death by her husband, Vincent Earl Cline; a son, Edgar Earl Cline; one daughter-in-law, Anita Burnette Cline; one brother, Edgar Mabe; and six sisters, Lillie Cooley, Elva Mabe, Percy Stewart, Maggie Hill, Eloise Hanks and Martha Cole. GARNER, Geraldine "Gerry" Marie O'Donnell, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2010, in Evanston, Illinois, after a brave battle with cancer. Born in Lynn, Mass., Gerry spent her childhood in Richmond, Va. She attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and St. Gertrude High School. She graduated from The College of William and Mary with two degrees in education. She earned a doctoral degree in career counseling from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, receiving the international Ralph Tyler Research Award for her dissertation. She was committed to education and professional development, both for herself and others. Her professional roles included Cooperative Education (Co-op) Coordinator at Virginia Tech; National Project Director of a U.S. Department of Labor Youth Employment Program; Founder/Director of the largest non-technical Co-op program in Virginia while at Virginia Commonwealth University; Associate Dean and Associate Professor at VCU; and director of Northwestern University's School of Engineering Co-op program, where she became the first woman Associate Dean in the School's history. Throughout her career, she was dedicated to increasing opportunities for women and minorities, establishing successful recruitment programs and award-winning mentorship programs. After decades of helping thousands of people begin and advance their careers, she founded a successful business, STCS, Inc., to assist employers in retaining top talent and provide career guidance and grant-writing expertise. She authored and edited numerous papers and three books, all in their third edition. Dedicated to professional and community service, she worked as chairperson of the Sunbelt Athletic Conference NCAA Compliance Committee, Chair of the VCU Athletic Council, Board of Directors Member of the Evanston-Northshore YWCA, and President of the Board of Directors and Co-Executive Director of the Shanti Foundation for Peace. She held many honors, including selection to Phi Kappa Phi, Who's Who of American Women, and multi-year winner of the Mother of the Year Award. Gerry was most proud of her family. To them, she was the center of the family, bringing them together with her patient advice, wonderful cooking, quick wit, unwavering support, unconditional love, and Christmas Queen magic. Gerry was preceded in death by her brother, Martin O'Donnell; her sister, Carroll O'Donnell, and her father, John O'Donnell. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Jerry; her daughter, Lauren Garner and husband, John Fabijanic; her son, Adrian Garner and wife, Richelle; her grandchildren, Avery, Riley and Molly, who affectionately referred to her as Nana G; her mother, Rosie O'Donnell; her brother, John O'Donnell and wife, Karen; her niece, nephews and extended family; and by countless friends who will miss her dearly. Lewis C. Carter GRAHAM. N.C. Lewis Claude "Uncle Louie" Carter, 71, of 5101 Yale Court, left this world to be with God on Sept. 10, 2010, at VA Hospital in Durham. Uncle Louie was a devoted husband, sincere friend, and dedicated family member. He leaves behind his loving wife, Ruth Spencer Carter, after 47 years of marriage. Lewis was born in Russell County, Va., and was the son of Homer and Ruby Carter, both deceased. In addition to his parents, Lewis was preceded in death by his sister, Nadine Turner; and brothers, Earl Carter, Gene Carter, and Jim Carter. Those who knew Uncle Louie remember his love of life and children of all ages. He served his country in the Army from 1963-1965 and was stationed in Korea during his service. He served as manager of the Burlington Moose Lodge and retired from the Department of Transportation of North Carolina in 2005. Lewis was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Virginia No. 343, and the St. Paul Lodge, in St. Paul, Va. He was a member of Union Baptist Church in Dante, Va. In addition to his wife, Lewis is survived by one sister, Ila Powers of Lockport, Ill.; one brother, Harold J. Carter and wife Dolly, of Cleveland, Va.; a sister-in-law, Vivian Carter of Castlewood, Va. While Lewis and Ruth did not have children, they were blessed with 12 nieces and nephews; and many great- nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at Salem United Methodist Church. Pastor Cathy Hoyle will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service in the fellowship hall of the church and at other times will be at the residence. Lewis fought a great fight over the past several years and always remained very positive. CROSTIC, Robert Hunter, age 63, lost a hard fought battle with cancer on Saturday, September 11, 2010, surrounded by the family he dearly loved. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Henry S. Sr. and Edith H. Crostic; a twin sister, Betty C. Berkley; mother-in-law, Helen T. Gentry; and nephew, W. Ross Eggleston. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Claire G. Crostic; son, Stuart C. "Carl" and wife, Tracy; daughter, Anne T. Abbott and husband, Alex. Robert was blessed with beloved grandsons, Cooper Henry Abbott and Owen Hunter Crostic. Robert served honorably in the United States Navy aboard the DD-445 Fletcher from 1966 to 1968 and was retired after 31 years from E.I. DuPont in 2009. He then spent his time doing some of the activities both inside, and most of all outside, his home that he so enjoyed. He and his family have been members of Bon Air United Methodist Church for over 38 years. Robert and his family have been truly blessed with many loving and supportive extended family and friends during these difficult months. His family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bliley's-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Road. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Dale Memorial Park, followed by a celebration of Robert's life at Bon Air United Methodist Church at 2 p.m., and a fellowship in the commons of the church. Raymond J. Amoreno CHESAPEAKE - Raymond J. Amoreno, 95, born July 30, 1915 in New York, N.Y., died Sept. 11, 2010. He was a World War II disabled veteran. He retired from the police force at the Norfolk Naval Base in 1973 and from the City of Virginia Beach as a golf course equipment mechanic in 1980. He was a member of the St. Matthew's Men's Club, the DAV No. 26, the Police Association of Virginia, the Knights of Columbus No. 10601 and No. 1162, the Alhambra Padul 69, and the South Norfolk Seniors Club. He is predeceased by his wife, Frances Amoreno. Survivors include four children, Frances Walker, Mickey and Bonnie Amoreno, Tom Amoreno and Jane Caldwell, and Jane Amoreno; 11 grandchildren, Susan, Ric and Joey Spears, Bill Walker, Frank, Carla, Marissa and Megan Walker, Mike, Rayna, Ruth and AJ Amoreno, Sandra, Steve, Tucker, Genny and Roan Weber, PJ Amoreno and Sam Kenkel; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Susan Wright, Susan Wright, 56, of Barboursville, passed away on Thursday, September 9, 2010, at her home., Born in Baltimore and raised outside Annapolis, Susan spent grade school summers sailing with family on the Chesapeake Bay. She attended Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, where she created her own major, Contemporary Humanities, to concentrate on the 20th century, minoring in Journalism. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa., After college, she returned to Baltimore to write about news and neighborhoods for local newspapers and Food and Fine Living Magazine, until she was hired by the mayor to work in his press office. While handling PR for the infamous Mayor William Donald Schaefer, she also worked on her Masters in Administrative Science at Johns Hopkins University. Her success in local politics led to a stint as press secretary to a Pennsylvania congressman in the first $1 million congressional race. It was a nail-biter: her candidate won by less than a half percent., Susan returned to her roots after that, plying her writing skills in the world of boats and all things marine. Born in Portsmouth, he was the son of Fred M. McEachern of Lititz, Pa., and the late Theresa Marie Brennan McEachern. He was the husband of Susan L. Watts McEachern for 20 years on August 18. A Christian, TJ was baptized in the Roman Catholic faith. He was a home insulator, most recently employed for five years by Keener Insulation in Lancaster, Pa., until his illness. He was a 1981 graduate of Churchland (Va.) High School. In addition to watching football and NASCAR, he enjoyed restoring vintage autos, going to the beach and surfing. His favorite beach was St. Augustine. In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by a daughter, Theresa Marie McEachern, at home; four stepchildren, J. Allen, husband of Tammy J. Virginia Lipscomb Austin, Virginia Lipscomb Austin died peacefully at home on Friday, September 10, 2010., She was predeceased by her husband, Harry P. Austin MD; her parents, the Reverend Doctor H. Bernard Lipscomb Jr. and Virginia Jones Lipscomb; a brother, H. Bernard Lipscomb III; and an infant son, Harry Paul Austin Jr., Virginia was born in Richmond, Virginia, on June 6, 1927, and lived throughout the state of Virginia during her childhood as the daughter of a Methodist minister. She attended Old Dominion University and Westhampton College. She married Harry in 1947 and after several years of living in southwestern Virginia, they moved to Charlottesville, where she resided for the remainder of her life. She was active in the community, serving on the boards of Martha Jefferson House and the Mental Health Association, and volunteering with numerous local organizations. She was a member of Rivanna Garden Club and the Central Virginia Watercolor Guild. Willia Cain Goins BRISTOL, Tenn. Willia Cain Goins, age 78, passed peacefully at Bristol Regional Medical Center on Sept. 11, 201,0 after a short illness. She was born Oct. 4, 1931, the daughter of the late Kelly and Bertha Holbrook Cain. She was a member of Throne of Grace Baptist Tabernacle and traveled with friends from Virginia Avenue Baptist Church. She retired from Sears after 44 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vondus Lee Goins. Survivors include: son, James "Eddie" Goins of Knoxville, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Betty Goins Weaver and husband Jimmy Weaver of Bristol Virginia; niece, Pamela Rehart of Kingsport, Tenn.; nephews, Mark Weaver of Bluff City, Tenn., Danny Goins of Roanoke, Va.; several cousins. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, at 8 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Randall Shaffer officiating. The burial will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-7:45 p.m. prior to the service. William Henry Palmer Mr. William Henry Palmer, 69, of Madison Heights, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, in Lynchburg. He was the son the the late Floyd Henry Palmer and Daisy Belle Palmer. He is survived by one son, Jonathan Palmer, of Madison Heights; a stepdaughter, Shante Alston (Bill), of Madison Heights; a stepson, Shawn Jones, of Lynchburg; two sisters, Ellen White (Clifton), of Lynchburg, and Jackie Coker (Troy), of Appomattox; two brothers, Floyd Palmer (Barbara), of Richmond, and Charles Richard Palmer, of Lynchburg; two devoted friends, Brenda Jones, of Amherst, and Frances Walker, of Lynchburg; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. William Ray Small William Ray Small, 68, of Crozet, died on Sunday, September 12, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center., He was preceded in death by two brothers, Douglas Lewis Small Jr. and Donald Small., He was born on July 9, 1942, in Albemarle County, son of the late Douglas Lewis Small Jr. and Beulah Thompson Small of Albemarle County., He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Shirley Ann Small of Crozet; one brother, Larry Small and his wife, Brenda, of Waynesboro, Virginia; and a number of nieces and nephews., The family would like to send our special thanks and devoted care to Marie, Mark, and Wanda Marsh.
