Sep 24, 2010 A memorial service for Aubrey Heyden Dillon, 85, of Stanleytown Health and Rehab Center, who died Sept. 20, 2010, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Bassett. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends for one hour before the service Saturday at the funeral home. Dillon was born Oct. 17, 1924, in Martinsville to Annie Wyatt Hall Dillon and Harvel Trotter "H.T." Dillon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Curtis L. Dillon and Dwight L. Dillon Sr. He attended Martinsville High School and left early to enlist in the Navy. His tour of active duty included the D-Day Invasion of June 6, 1944. He was honorably discharged in April 1946, and he returned to Martinsville and completed high school. He then graduated from Virginia Southern Business School in Roanoke. As a member of the Navy Reserve, he was called back to duty and served on the USS Boxer during the Korean Conflict. After his second honorable discharge, he returned to Martinsville and went to work for Lester Industries. In 1967, Dillon teamed with Paul Dodson and Don Eanes to start a repair business known as The Electric Company. He retired from full-time employment in 1998. Surviving are several nieces, nephews and great nieces, and one great nephew.

Bernard John Gould NORFOLK - Bernard J. "Benny" Gould, 81, passed away Sept. 22, 2010 in Maryview Nursing Center. Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Corinne and Harry Gould. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. A self-made man, Benny Gould was an aircraft mechanic at NAS Norfolk, as well as had the "Benny Gould Dance Band and Orchestra" for nearly 40 years. He started his own business, a musical instrument shop, called the "Musician's Shop" and later billed as Benny Gould's Music World. He then started buying real estate in residential and commercial buildings. He started an Italian restaurant with his wife, Angelina, called "Mama Lina's Italian Restaurant." Benny Gould had a reputation for being a very well-known and respected businessman in his community. He will truly be missed by many close friends and loved ones who knew him. Benny was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years, Angelina "Lina" Francia L'Erario Gould. He is survived by his daughter, Roxanne C. Spellman and husband Robert of San Diego; son, Frank B. Gould and wife Susan of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Stephen A. Spellman and Cameron T. Spellman, both of San Diego; two stepchildren, Jonathan Mestinsek of Lincoln, Ill., and Calasse Jones of Norfolk; a cousin, Rita Brigerman of Vera Beach, Fla.; extended family members, Angelina M. Betty R. Harmon LITTLE RIVER, S.C. - Betty R. Harmon, 71, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010 at her home. Born Nov. 15, 1938 in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Willy B. and Evelyn Scarce Russell. She was a member of the New Temple Grove Ministry and the Moose Lodge of Portsmouth, Chapter 966. Survivors include her husband, Raymond V. Harmon of Norfolk; one son, Robert W. Russell of Danville; two daughters, Starlette Seamster of Hampton, Tammy Higgins of Little River; one brother, James Russell of Columbia, S.C.; one sister, Gwendolyn Anderson of Danville; three grandchildren, Terry Collie, Jerry Seamster, Jesse Higgins; and one great-grandchild, Annabella Grace Hunter. She was a native and lifelong resident of the Bristol area and was a daughter of the late James and Alice Craig Vance. Carolyn worked with the BTCS Food Service for 20 years and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Randolph Curtis; and a brother-in-law, Randy Phillips. Survivors include: two daughters, Tracy Jones and husband, Marvin, Amy Osborne and husband, Richard Todd; two sisters, Julie Ann Morton and husband, Allen M. R. Charles R. Martin NORFOLK - Charles R. Martin, 81, of King George, also known as "Chief Martin," entered into rest Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010 in Norfolk, where he had been cared for after suffering a fall three and a half years ago. He was born Jan. 12, 1929 in Blairstown, N.J., to the late Bradley and Hazel (Simmons) Martin. He was preceded in death by his younger sister, Carolyn Drake and his younger brother, Jerry Martin. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 59 years, Marilyn J. (Clark) Martin; four daughters, Rebecca McDougal of Pine Bluff, Ark., Victoria Wissing of Hutchinson, Kan., Dawn Ryan of Norfolk and Pamela Garlitz of Willow Street, Pa.; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and his older sister, Jean Hannah of Newton, N.J. Serving 31 years in the U.S. Navy which included two wartime deployments to Vietnam, he rose to the rank of master chief mess specialist. Among his many awards and decorations include four Edward Francis Ney Memorial Awards for the Best Shore Enlisted Dining Facility Naval District Washington, D.C., in 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1978 which he earned while stationed at Dahlgren; a Vietnam Campaign Medal and a Vietnam Service Medal with Three Bronze Stars; the Navy Unit Commendation Medal for Expert Rifleman and 12 Letters of Commendation and Appreciation. Following his Navy career, he worked as a civil service employee at the Dahlgren Commissary for a number of years. He also enjoyed singing in the choir as a faithful member of the Dahlgren Chapel. His life will be celebrated Monday, Sept. 27, at noon in the Naval Support Activity Dahlgren Chapel, 17261 Jones Road, Dahlgren, VA 22448 with a service officiated by Lt. Richard Malmstrom, U.S. Navy chaplain. Friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. until service time. Interment will be held Tuesday, Sept. 28, at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby St., Norfolk, VA 23505 at 11 a.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, Va. Clarice Dillon Tornatore, 93, of Charlottesville, departed her earthly life on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, on Peace Day at Martha Jefferson Hospital., She was born on February 14, 1917, "a very special Valentine" in Rich Creek, Virginia, the daughter of the late Estel Davis and Adeline Davis., She was preceded in death by Richard Dillon the father of her children; and her second husband, John Tornatore II; a son-in-law, Richard Mills; and a grandson, Michael Mills., She is survived by her five children, Patricia Breeding and her husband, Bernard, of Earlysville, Janice Evans and her husband, Terry, of Bristol, Tennessee, Nedra Mills of Holly Springs, North Carolina, Bill Dillon and his wife, Debra, of Charlottesville and Gary Dillon of Charlottesville; two stepchildren, Skippy Tornatore of Charlottesville and Tina Davis of Clearwater, Florida. She was a proud grandmother and is survived by nine grandchildren and 19 great- grandchildren., Mrs. Tornatore lived for many years at Woods Edge where she enjoyed a very active life style with her many friends. Donald Leonard

Donald J. Leonard CHINCOTEAGUE - Donald J. Leonard, 84, passed away peacefully at his residence on Chincoteague in the early morning hours of Sept. 24, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was born on Chincoteague to the late Arthur Leonard and Olive Jester Leonard. He was the grandson of the late Capt. and Mrs. John Leonard and Mr. and Mrs. Lambert Jester. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a career firefighter and a successful entrepreneur and businessman. His ventures include the Island Marina, a sea clamming operation, Island Cruises, and the Refuge Motor Inn. Mr. Leonard was a hard-working, devoted community leader. He was a member and president of the Chincoteague Kiwanis Club, member of Masonic Lodge 243 and American Legion Post No. 159, Chincoteague Town Councilman, member of the Accomack County School Board, officer of the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce, and lifetime member of the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, including a number of years as the head of public relations and chairman of the Pony Committee. Donald had a loving, humorous, and generous spirit and shared his time, talents, and possessions with the community and those in need. From an early age, his greatest passion was for the Chincoteague ponies. He owned his first horse when he was only 12-years-old and spent much of the last 40 years among a small herd that he maintained on his property. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Martha Moore Leonard, and their four children, Carlton Leonard, Jane Leonard Wolffe, Donna Leonard, and Arthur Leonard; their spouses, Scharlene, Glenn and Mary Esther; nine grandchildren, Michael, Roden, Carla, Sandy, Cynthia, Hunter, Ayden, Dan, and Sam; and one great-granddaughter, Ashlyn. Also surviving are his special girls, Sallye Dukes and Rita Matthews; and his second family at the Refuge Inn. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, Nov. 26. HATHAWAY, Donald P., who worked at Richmond Newspaper for over 30 years, passed away on September 20, 2010 after a brave fight with cancer and Parkinson's. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Savage Hathaway; daughters, Marie Smook, Nancy Garbett; son, David Hathaway; several grandchildren, great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Eddie Hathaway who passed in 2009. Johnnie Reynolds who was his aide and companion for several months, was a very special friend in Don's life. Doris was the daughter of the lat Willie C. and Dollie Hall Coleman and the wife of the late Wilbert Wilson Smith Sr. She was also preceded in death by her son, Wilbert Smith Jr., daughter, Crystal Smith; one sister, Mary C. Grandison; three brothers, Harrison Coleman Jr., Macarthur Coleman and Thomas C. Coleman., Doris was a member of Big Bethel Church in McKenney and served as an usher. She loved fishing and cooking in her spare time., She leaves to cherish her memories a loving and devoted son, Luther Smith (Zorana) of Dinwiddie; two step-daughters, Sarah Wingfield of Dinwiddie and Rachel Green of Cleveland, Ohio; two sisters, Bertha C. Douglas Carroll Mumaw Douglas Carroll Mumaw, age 67, of Edinburg, Virginia passed away Thursday, September 23, 2010 at Blue Ridge Hospice Center in Winchester, Va., Mr. Mumaw was born May 24, 1943 in Woodstock, son of the late David and Lena Lineweaver Mumaw. He was a member of the first graduating class of Central High School and retired as GM Parts Manager for Jim McKay Chevrolet in Fairfax. He was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church in Basye, Va. and a member of several hunting clubs. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed hunting with family and friends in West Virginia and bear hunting in Canada. He coached little league baseball and football and enjoyed going to his grandchildren's sporting events., Doug is survived by his wife, Jean Mumaw; five children, Tonya Kelley and her husband, Kevin of Warrenton, Leslie VanWickler and her husband, Bill of Manassas, Kelly Mumaw and his wife Wanda of Strasburg, Holly Aldridge and her husband, Fred of Brandy Station, and Dougie Mumaw of Strasburg; eight grand-children, Heather Weller, Kevin Patrick Kelley II, Brittany VanWickler, Danielle VanWickler, Breann Jean Mumaw, Lynnette Mumaw, Kaitlyn Rutherford and David Kemp; two step-grand-children, David Perry and Justin Aldridge; four great- grandchildren, Dayne Michael Kemp, Jackson Patrick Weller, Harrison Davis Weller and Abigail Jean Mumaw, and several nieces and nephews. Edward Jefferson Davis Sr.

DAVIS, Edward Jefferson Sr., 86, of Kilmarnock, died Thursday, September 23, 2010. He was the son of the late Eddie H. and Lillian Jefferson Davis. Mr. Davis was an active member of Kilmarnock Baptist Church for 64 years serving in many capacities, among them trustee, chairman of Deacons, Sunday School director and teacher. For 40 years, he was the owner of Davis Dodge Chrysler Jeep, Inc. with his loyal and devoted employees, Pam Thrift, Wilson Evans, Floyd H. Ball and Charles Dodson. Mr. Davis served as the Mayor of Kilmarnock for 24 years, served on the Town Council for 20 years and was a member of the Zoning Commission for six years. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II, receiving a number of awards including the Bronze Star. As a member of Lancaster Union Lodge # 88 A.F.& A.M. in Kilmarnock, he was recently awarded his 60-year membership pin. Mr. Davis was also a member of Acca Temple Shrine and Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies. Mr. Davis was an active member of the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department for 60 years serving as president and in many other positions and offices. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Peggy George Davis; a son, Edward J. Davis Jr. of Kilmarnock and fiancee, Betty Sue Spence, of Lively; three granddaughters, Stacey Lynne Davis of Glebe Point, Heather Davis Oliver and husband, Morgan, of Corrottoman, and Carol Marie Davis of Glebe Point; two great-grandchildren, Nora Grace and William Lee Bowles; adopted son, Wilson Evans of Weems; a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Rebecca D. Stokes, Claramont D. Douglas, Camille D. Barrack and Hilda D. Collins. Mr. Atwood, a native of Waterville, Maine, graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and attended Georgia Tech before entering the Army as an officer during World War II. He retired from Hoechst-Celanese, formerly Virginia Chemicals, where he was respected internationally for his expertise in sodium hydrosulfite bleaching in the textile and paper industries. He was a member of Churchland Baptist Church and served as treasurer and several times as chairman of the board of deacons. He sat on several municipal committees and was a longtime member of the Portsmouth Kiwanis Club and was a past District lieutenant governor of Kiwanis International. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Frances Agnor Atwood; three children, Gayle A. Channel and husband Warren of Portsmouth, Lawrence Graham Atwood and wife Carol of Lexington, Va., and Beverly Sears A. Beck of Whiteville, N.C. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Warren W. "Chip" Channel Jr. and wife Erin, Bryn Andrew Beck, Lee Graham Atwood and wife Karri, Laura Elizabeth Atwood, Joshua Sears Beck; and three great-grandchildren, Grady and Emmy Channel, and Lucy Atwood. Newman of Powhatan; his daughter, Jaidan I. Cox of Richmond; his mother, Helen C. Newman of Richmond; two brothers, Specialist Jaime E. Newman, U.S. Army, Ft. Bragg, N.C. and Jaime G. Newman of Richmond; one sister, Maria A. Newman of Richmond; his grandmother, Lillian P. Newman of Louisa; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. Jaime graduated from Kennedy High School, where he was in the JROTC under Col. Melvin and Sgt. Miller. He was a member of First Baptist Church and had been a member of Boy Scout Troop 443. Dr. James E. Jackson (Jim-Buddy) Dr. Jackson departed his life and went to be with the Lord on Sept. 22, 2010. He was 88 years old. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved at an early age to Lynchburg and later resided in Galax. He went to college and became an optometrist in Galax. He served his country in the Army from 1942 to 1945. He was a stenographer and radio operator. He received The Bronze Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with three Battle Stars and The Purple Heart. He was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Galax. He was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Helen Truitt Jackson; his father, James Edward Jackson; his mother, Blanche N. Jackson; and his sisters, Pauline J. Phelps, Juanita J. Johnson and Margaret (Ann) J. Dancy. He is survived by one brother, Lawrence (Larry) B. Jackson, and his wife, Madge (Nickie), and several nieces, nephews, family and friends. A special friend and caregiver, Linda B. Davidson, also survives. Mr. Jackson will have military honors at graveside service at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at Felts Cemetery in Galax. In addition to his father, he is survived by his beloved wife of 16 years, Lynnette Duft, U.S. Navy retired; three brothers, Ronald, Thomas and Anthony Duft; two sisters, Patricia Gauvin and Sandra Cleary; his mother-in-law, Janet Phillips; many nieces and nephews; and his two dogs, Gigi Rae and Redmon Jon. Crouse Jean Carol Wymer Crouse, 73, died on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn. She was born in North Carolina on Dec. 21, 1936. She was a daughter of Luthern Dickerson Wymer and Ada Kenny Wymer. She was a loving wife and mother. She greatly enjoyed music, and she often recorded her own. She was very fond of animals and had many pets. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Paul Crouse; one son, Richard Allen Reed Crouse of Marion; one daughter, Robin Lowery and husband, Gary, of Marion; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law as well as other family members and friends; and her favorite pets, Rosebud, Mike, B.G. and Tazzy. Josephine Jackson Warrick Josephine Jackson Warrick, 90, of Lynchburg, departed this life, Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, at the Carrington. She was the wife of the late James A. Warrick. Born Nov. 22, 1919, she was the only daughter of the late John Henry Jackson and Marcella Nowlin Jackson. She was baptized at Dearington Baptist Church at a young age and remained a faithful member until she no longer was able to attend. She attended Dunbar High School. As a young person, Josephine had a reputation of being a very good dancer and a sharp dresser. She learned to sew from her "Grandma Jackson" and became "the seamstress" for many family members and friends. She was a very loving person and brought joy to all who loved her, especially her nieces and nephews, who affectionately called her Aunt Joe. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, John Edward Jackson and Arthur Robert "Boots" Jackson, and a niece, Lucille Jackson Toler. She leaves to cherish her precious memories an aunt, Ms. Minnie Brown; a devoted sister-in-law, Alberta M. Jackson, both of Lynchburg; nephews, Edward L. Jackson (Barbara), of Waldorf, Md., Donald A. Jackson ( Lynn), of Lakeville, Minn., Charles Jackson (LaVerne), of Lynchburg, Leonard L. Mack, of Oxon Hill, Md., Richard Warrick (JoAnn), of Madison Heights, and Phillip Warrick (Sandra), of Lynchburg; nieces, Sandra K. Claire Gehman VIRGINIA BEACH - Margaret Claire Sheehan Gehman died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010 in a Norfolk hospital. She was born in Wilmington, N.C., May 29, 1918, the daughter of James Benedict Sheehan and Catherine Healy Sheehan. She was raised in Norfolk, graduating from St. Mary's Academy. Mrs. Gehman loved music and singing and sang in the choir for many years at St. Edward's Church in Palm Beach, Fla. While there, she was the president of St. Edward's Guild. She was very interested in horticulture and flower arranging and served as a flower show judge for several years in the Bethesda/ Chevy Chase, Md., area. Mrs. Gehman was a counselor with the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. Additionally, she was president of the docents at the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach. Mrs. Gehman also assisted in the resettlement of Navy and civilian wives and children during the evacuation of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in the fall of 1962. She was predeceased by Capt. Harold W. Gehman Sr. and is survived by two sons, Retired U.S. Navy Adm. Harold W. Gehman Jr. and wife Janet of Virginia Beach, James E. Gehman and wife Lauren of Norfolk; and two daughters, Kathleen G. Wallace and husband James and Margaret G. Lanman and husband John, all of Blowing Rock, N.C. She is also survived by her sister, Katherine Genevieve Sheehan of Chesapeake. Claire is also survived by five grandchildren, Katherine Gehman, Christopher Gehman, Matthew Gehman, Elizabeth Gehman Thalhimer and Robert Walsh and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gehman's greatest accomplishment in life was to raise four children successfully during a world war and several long naval deployments. She executed several household moves, guided the development of four children and at the same time counseled younger Navy mothers who struggled with the long periods of separation. Her guidance was gentle, supportive and reassuring. Her strength of character inspired all to tolerate adversity and believe in God. The family would like to thank the loving and skillful care of the caregivers at Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Home Instead of Virginia Beach during the last two and a half years. A funeral Mass celebrating the life of Mrs. Gehman will be held at St. Bede Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg, Monday, Sept. 27, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society . She later divorced and moved back to New York where she joined the work force and retired from Brunswick Hospital in Amityville, N.Y., as a dietary aide. She loved playing cards, doing puzzles and fishing, which was her favorite hobby and became second nature to her. May Hope Wilkins PLYMOUTH - Dr. May Hope Wilkins - precious, powerful and passionate - was born Dec. 4, 1949 to the late Robert and Zelma Hope of Mount Holly, N.C. She received her elementary and secondary education in the Gaston County school system. She attended Reid High School and graduated from Mount Holly High School in 1967. Her education continued at Winston-Salem State University, where she received a B.A. in 1971. She then received an M.A. from Hampton University in 1986 and a Ph.D. from East Carolina University in 1997. Dr. Wilkins had been an educator for 39 years. During her career, she had been a high school English teacher, a coach of girl's and boy's tennis, a consultant with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, an assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and a principal of Plymouth High School. She has inspired, motivated and provided professional guidance to many students and colleagues. She had been involved in many community service projects including voter registrations, "Get Out the Vote" campaigns, personal and career counseling and a proof reader for term papers, articles and theses. Her service to the community has been appreciated and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her three children, Dedric Wilkins, Cedric Wilkins, Hope Wilkins; and one brother, John Hope. Visitation will be today, Sept. 25, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Plymouth High School. The funeral will be Sunday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m. at the high school. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and faithfully served in many callings. She also served as Secretary to the Interfaith Service Council of Lancaster/Northumberland County, but will most be remembered for her role as a loving and dedicated mother and grandmother. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 27, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at the corner of Route 3 and Devils Bottom Rd., Kilmarnock, Virginia, with interment following at the Historic Christ Church Burying Ground, Irvington, Virginia. MASSEY, Patrick Alan, entered into eternal rest on September 21, 2010, at his residence. Patrick was born on May 7, 1957, in Paris, France. He retired after 30 years at Philip Morris and settled in Chesterfield, Va. He was an avid gardener and antique collector. He had a lifelong fascination with Native American life and artifacts which resulted in an extensive collection of lithics and pottery. He had a deep respect for nature and enjoyed many long road trips across both America and Europe. He had recently developed an interest in cooking and enjoyed sharing meals with friends. He is survived by his closest friend - his mother, Simka S. Massey of Colonial Heights; his father, Charles R. Massey of Colonial Heights; two sisters, Michele Clarke (Stephen) of Dinwiddie, Va. and Karen Massey (Phil) of Burke, Va.; three nephews, Kyle and Benjamin Daughety, and Jack Forjan; a niece, Valerie Forjan; several aunts, uncles, and cousins in both Canada and the Netherlands, and his faithful dog, Jake, who adopted him many years ago. Ralph Worthington Drayer, Ralph Worthington Drayer of Waynesboro, died on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was 96., Mr. Drayer was born in Columbus, Ohio, and graduated from, in 1936 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He retired from the, Company in 1980 after 42 years of service. During his career, he designed electrical instruments for aircraft which were flown in, and later implemented and marketed the first computerized tape controls sold in this country., They were manufactured in Waynesboro where he held many positions in the marketing department before his retirement. He belonged to the General Electric retirement group in Waynesboro and served as its president., Mr. Drayer pursued numerous interests including radio broadcasting, tennis, travel, gardening and classical music. He was an accomplished painter and sailor. He built many things, including his own sailboat which he named "Consequor". He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro., He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Janet Winters Drayer. He is also survived by his son, Ralph Worthington Drayer Jr. and his wife, Sandy, of Hilton Head, South Carolina; his daughter, Miriam Antich and her husband, Peter, of Richardson, Texas; his daughter, Sally Drayer and her husband, Jeffrey Nicholas, of Solebury, Pennsylvania; his daughter, Mary Ellen Drayer of Charlottesville, Virginia; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive., A memorial service celebrating his life will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday, September 27, 2010, at The First Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro. Raymond C. Hope VIRGINIA BEACH - Raymond Clifford Hope, 78, departed this earth Sept. 24, 2010. A native of Norfolk, Ray was born July 24, 1932. He graduated from Maury High School in 1951 and was the smallest and proudest member of the Maury High School football team. He worked with his father in the family business, Hope's Transfer prior to serving two years in the United States Army. In 1965, as a graduate and vice president of the 26th NAS Apprentice School Class, he delivered the salutatory address. Ray then became a self-employed general contractor and custom home builder for the life of his career. He was a member of the Masonic Corinthian Lodge No. 266 AF&AM in Norfolk, and a member of the Virginia Beach Shag Club. Ray was predeceased by his parents, George William and Ethel Florence Hope. He is survived by his daughter, Stacy Hope Schubart and husband Jeff; his son, Brian Allen Hope and wife Rebecca; and his sister, Barbara Hope Powell and husband Frank. Also left to cherish his memory are grandchildren, Brier Ethan Hope Haycox, Philip Jesse Hope, Nicholas Edward Hope, and William Raymond Hope; stepgranddaughter, Karson Ann Schubart; and nieces, Kim Powell Barclift and Kelley Powell Schlaepfer and their families. Ruth Elizabeth Mitchell Martin Ruth Elizabeth Mitchell Martin of Manassas, Va. died peacefully in her sleep on Friday September 17, 2010. She was 103., Mrs. Martin was born January 8, 1907 in Ridgley, Md. to Clayton Herman and Ida C. Detwiler Mitchell. She was raised in Ridgley, Md. and graduated from Ridgley High School and moved to Wilmington, Del. attending Goldie Beacom Business School and played on the basketball team. She worked for Sears and Roebuck in the Credit Department for 20 years. She was member of the Holly Oak Methodist Church, a Brownie Troop Leader and a member of the "Ultra Refined Bridge Club" for more than 40 years. Mrs. Martin and her husband moved to Warrenton, Va. and was a member of the Warrenton United Methodist Church and the Warrenton Chapter of AARP. She was devoted to her family, friends and the eight great-grand-children who were the delight of her life., She married John Doak Goff Martin, who preceded her in death in 1995 and was also preceded in death by her brothers, Roy, Herman and Jesse Mitchell. Her sisters, Lola Cortelyou and Vianna Long. Mrs. Martin is survived by her son, John "Jack" M. Martin and his wife, Gean of Falls Church, Va. and her daughter, Suzanne "Susie" Martin Corrao and her husband, John, of Orlean Va. She is survived by five grandchildren, Robert M. and John M. Martin, Christine C. Love, Amy C. Clampitt and Nicole M. Morris; eight great-grand-children along with many nieces and nephews. She was born Nov. 30, 1923, in Wythe County, the Huddle community, daughter of the late William Reuben and Effie Blair Fisher. She was a member of Dublin United Methodist Church for over 50 years where she sang in the choir, served as a Sunday school treasurer and held other committee positions through the years. She worked at Dublin Elementary School as cafeteria manager and at the Dublin High School cafeteria for many years. She retired from the town of Dublin in 1986. Many will remember her working at the crosswalks between Dublin High School and Dublin Elementary School as a police officer. She also worked in the mayor's office and was a secretary for the Dublin Maintenance Department. She was a member of the Dublin Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Wayne Weaver; daughter, Sharron Effie Weaver Bean; sister, Mary Ann Fisher Taylor; and two brothers, William Charles Fisher and Giles Jordon Fisher. Survivors include a daughter, Wain Patilyn "Patty" Weaver of Cleveland, Tenn.; a son and daughter-in-law, William Eugene Weaver and Betty Joyce "B.J." Sep 24, 2010 LEXINGTON, N.C. — William Lee Alley, 60, of Hillcrest Road, Lexington, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, at his home. He was born in Guilford County on July 15, 1950, to Charles William Alley and Annie Perdue Alley of Martinsville, Va. He formerly lived in Carolina Beach and Martinsville, and had worked for Asplaugh Tree Service. Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, Mary Ann Nester of Martinsville; and a brother, Lonnie Eugene Alley of Shreveport, La. A memorial service and visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the home of his sister, Mary Ann Nester, 289 Preston Road, Martinsville. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, N.C. 27292. Arrangements were handled by Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington.

He was born June 11, 1934 in Nash County, North Carolina. Visitation will be held Monday, Sept. 27, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The funeral will be held Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 1 p.m. in Shiloh Church of Christ Disciples of Christ, 541 N.C. Sep 24, 2010 The funeral for Winnie Lou Pugh Jones, who died Sept. 17, 2010, was held Monday at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson, N.C., with the Revs. Jack Pugh and Lonnie Carpenter officiating. Burial was in Chestnut Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Crumpler, N.C. Pallbearers were Derick Jones, Danny Jones, Mark Jones, Jimmy Jones, Sam Jones, Shannon Jones and Stewart Jones. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ina Jeanette Jones.
