Garrison Jr., 85, widower of Margaret Elizabeth (Mitts) Garrison of Knightly Mill Road, Fort Defiance, passed away on Thursday, September 16, 2010, at Augusta Health in Fishersville., Mr. Garrison was born on June 30, 1925, in Browns Cove, Virginia, a son of the late Alexander L. Bell Bobbie Jo "B.J." Bell, 28, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, in Richmond. B.J. was born in Haleyville, Ala., on Feb. 22, 1982. She was a very loving mother. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Garland and Maxine Haulsee of Marion and Wordie and Marie Bell of Double Springs, Ala., and a very special uncle, Chappy Thomas. Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Debra Haulsee Mays and Allen Mays of Marion; her father and stepmother, David and Diane Bell of Double Springs, Ala.; her daughters, Alexus Smith of Marion and Amaya, Markaya and McKendrah Bell, all of Richmond; her stepbrother, Christopher Bell of Double Springs, Ala.; a very special aunt, Patty Thomas of Marion; a special uncle and aunt, Ronald and Hada Haulsee of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Sept. 16, at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Thompson officiating. Charles Roy Jones

Charles Roy Jones Charles Roy Jones died Tuesday, September 15 due to complications from pancreatitis. He was 79., Born in Philadelphia, Penn. in 1931 to David Charles Jones and Dorothy Mae Butler Wrigley, he had two brothers, David Charles Jones, Jr. and John Godfrey Jones (all deceased). He was raised in the Philadelphia and Buffalo areas. From an early age - and throughout his life - he enjoyed singing and playing music; his favorite instruments were the clarinet and the saxophone., Jones entered the U.S., and became a pilot upon graduation from Bowling Green State University, where he met his future wife, Marilyn Jane Ross. The two were married in 1953. He served in the Army for more than 20 years, including two tours in Viet Nam, achieving the rank of Lt Colonel before retirement in 1974. Though he flew several different types of aircraft during his career and after, he spent much of his time behind the controls of a Chinook helicopter. He also loved to fly Bell-47s, Caribous and King Airs. The family moved 25 times during their military years, finally settling in Springfield, Va. Additionally, they frequently vacationed at the family's cabin in Gettysburg, Penn., considered a second home by all the Joneses., Since the early 1970s, Jones and his family has owned and operated the Lamp Factory Outlet and JJ's Hallmark retail stores. Jones gained great pleasure from growing these businesses with his family and friends, and was honored on multiple occasions by his local chambers of commerce and the business community at large., He was active in two churches, Bull Run Unitarian Universalist Church and Accotink Unitarian Universalist Church, of which he was a founding member. For several years he taught business management at Northern Virginia Community College and English as a second language to new Americans. He was also a dedicated mentor and civic activist, campaigning for immigration rights, GLBT rights and the right for equality in marriage. A liberal man, Jones was a supporter of democratic candidates and progressive government. His love for animals - and most recently his dog Jaylene - was central in his life., Jones was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn Jane Jones, in 1994. He remarried in 2000 and is survived by his wife Marilyn "Rosie" Petersen Jones. He is also survived by his four children, Jennifer Jones Glushefski, John Jones, Julie Jones Gregorowicz and Jody Jones as well as sons-in-law, Ed Glushefski and Ed Gregorowicz; daughters-in-law, Gail Yeager Jones and Kathy Grisaffe Jones; step-son Jason MacCabe; 12 grandsons and granddaughters, his brother David's sons and daughters and cousin, Ellen Leslie and her daughters and extended family. To his children and grandchildren he left an exemplary and lasting legacy of love and support that will be treasured forever., A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, September 22 at 2 p.m. at Bull Run Unitarian Universalist Church. Dorothy Goodman Weaver KINGSPORT, Tenn. Dorothy Goodman Weaver went home to be with the Lord, Sept. 16, 2010, close to midnight after an extended illness. She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Harry C. Weaver Sr.; her parents, William Lee and Sarah Catherine Isley Goodman; three brothers, Cecil, Clarence and William Lee Jr.; and four sisters, Evalee Barker, Juanita Casteel, Pauline Goodman and Gladys Moody. She is survived by her five children: Garry L. Weaver and wife, Judy, of Knoxville, Tenn.,Judy McKenzie and husband, Larry, Lynda Hilton and husband, Larry, and Harry C. Weaver Jr. and wife, Kelly, all of Kingsport; Rebecca Miller-Jackson and husband, Mike, of Piney Flats, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and she is also survived by one sister, Hazel Moretz of Bristol Virginia, and several nieces and nephews. She was a homemaker and seamstress she spent lots of time with family and friends. Raising a large family of five by raising a garden and storing food stuff to feed a big family through the winters surely kept her busy, so it is hard for any of us to know how she was able to get everything done that she accomplished. She was a charter member of Indian Springs Baptist Church, choir member, Sunday school teacher, junior choir director and worked in vacation Bible school in the summers for the children of the church. She was also a member of the Liberty Chapter No. 198 Order of the Eastern Star, Kingsport. The family will be receiving friends Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, from 2-5 p.m. at Indian Springs Baptist Church, Kingsport. The funeral service will be conducted by Dr. Roc Collins and Brother Mike Morgan at 5 p.m. with special music provided by Paul Patterson. A graveside service will be conducted Monday, Sept. 19, 2010, at 10 a.m. at East Lawn Memorial Park, Garden of the Good Shepherd, Kingsport. Pallbearers as requested by our mother will be her six grandsons: Michael G. Weaver, Bradley W. McKenzie, Jordan A. Weaver, Clinton L. Miller, Paul S. Miller and Jacob Michael Weaver. We, the family, would like to thank our church family at Indian Springs Baptist Church and all our friends for all the cards, flowers and notes of encouragement sent to Mother and those who have continued to keep mother and all of us in their prayers through Mother's extended illness. Eddie Wayne Love Eddie Wayne Love, age 63, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 16, 2010, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. Eddie fought a great fight over the past several years with illness, but always remained faithful to the Lord. He was a true blessing to all who knew him and will be greatly missed. He lived most of his life in the Bristol and Meadowview, Va. area. He was a member of the Alvarado Bible Church. He was a devoted Christian who loved serving the Lord. He also served in the U.S. Army. He was the son of the late James Love and Cora Love Wynegar. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Gloria Love Deel; and stepdad, John Ballard Wynegar. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Judy; and daughters, April (Ken) Harr of Bluff City, Tenn., Rhonda (Wayne) Pringle of Abingdon, Va., Suzette Robinson of Knoxville, Tenn., and Pamela (Steven) McCracken of Russellville, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren, Trey Harr, Taylor Harr, Tasha Camper, Josh Camper, Billy Pringle, Amanda Robinson, Juliette Robinsin, Elizabeth Robinson, Tyler McCracken, and Star McCracken; and three great-grandchildren. She retired from Marsh & Mclennan Insurance, and in her retirement she enjoyed cooking and entertaining her friends. She had worked as an LPN for many years with the Johnson City Memorial Hospital on the Pediatric floor. Mrs. Maine was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clyde B. Emma Virginia (Cole) Umbarger ABINGDON, Va. Emma Virginia (Cole) Umbarger, 88, died peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010. A loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, her beautiful smile and gentle touch will be missed by many. Emma was born Oct. 9, 1921 and grew up in Abingdon. She and her husband, Leland, raised six children on the farm they owned near Greendale. A loyal Christian, she joyfully shared her love of Christ with others. As her family grew and spread across the world, she faithfully wrote letters to each and never forgot a birthday. Emma adored roses, spending time with her family, and gospel music. Welcoming her in Heaven are her parents, John Lorenzo and Jessie Honaker Cole; her husband, Leland; son, Glen; son-in-law, John Rutledge; and many brothers, sisters and friends. Estelita Maria Westhoff Estelita Maria Westhoff, of Dumfries, Virginia succumbed to cancer on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at Potomac Hospital., Estelita (Lita) was born in Kohala, Hawaii, October 28, 1946, to Roman and Claudia Valite. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Humanities in 1968 from Gonzaga University. While attending Gonzaga University, Lita met her husband, Jim., After their wedding, Jim and Lita moved to Okinawa, Japan for 8 years. In 1976, Jim, Lita and family moved to Dumfries, VA, where they currently reside. They have been married for 43 years., During her 35 years of teaching, Lita was a well loved and respected educator. She was considered an important member of the education community at John F. Pattie Elementary School in Prince William County, Va., Lita enjoyed cooking, traveling and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren., Lita was preceded in death by her granddaughter Sophie Thitoff. Lita is survived by her husband, Jim, her son Brian and his wife Jeni and their sons Jackson, Connor and Ryan; her daughter Vanessa Thitoff and her husband Chad and their daughters Emma, Madelyn and Chloe; her sister Arlinda Andersen and her sons Nicholas and Gregory. Mr. Powers was preceded in death by his parents, Emory Powers and Bonnie Wyatt Powers; and two sisters, Juanita Powers and Mamie Sawyers; and two brothers, Glen Powers and Gayther Powers . He was a veteran of the U.S., and had been a barber in Smyth and Washington counties for several years. Mr. Powers was of the Baptist faith, loved to play the guitar and was very knowledgeable of the Bible. BIBBS, James S. "Bodie," 67, having kicked cancer's butt for six years, went home to God and his family September 16, 2010. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by those who loved him. He is survived by his Aunt Peggy; his brother, Bobby; his wife, Debbie; his sister, Mary, and his little sister, Betty, whom he affectionately called "Boop." He is also survived by nephews, Bill, Willy and Robert; his nieces, Valerie, Bridgett and Michelle; great-nephews, Jason, Joseph, James, Christopher, Michael and Thomas; great-nieces, Loren, Laura, Jennifer and Ashley; great-great-niece, Savannah; great-great-nephew, Benjamin; and numerous cousins. Bodie proudly served his nation in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran. He continued to serve by volunteering for experimental chemotherapy at the McGuire VA Hospital in Richmond, with the hope of helping others. The family will receive friends at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston, Va. Kenneth Williams Kenneth Williams, age 85, of Woodbridge, Va., died September 12, 2010, at Westminster at Lake Ridge., He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. to David Smith Williams and Anna Frederica Hunninghaus, the youngest of four children., At the outbreak of, , he joined the Navy and served onboard a mine sweeper in the Caribbean. He was a "plank member" of the USS Instill (AM 252). He adopted the middle name of Richard while in the Navy. After the war, he came to Northern Virginia where he met and married Sarah Elizabeth Bailey. They were married nearly 50 years when Sarah died in 1997. They were the parents of two children., After retirement from Aetna Insurance Company, Ken enjoyed traveling and spending time with friends and family. He moved to Westminster at Lake Ridge in 2005 to be near his family., Ken is survived by his daughter, Paula Curran; son, David (Katy); three grandchildren: Alexa L. Williams, Rebecca L. Daily (Francis) and J. He was born Friday, March 14, 1919, in Quinter, Kan., a son of the late Eston Everett Allen and Mary Bunker Allen. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Irene Reed Allen. He wa a retired employee of the Rubatex Corporation and was a member of the V. F. W. and Union United Methodist Church. He was also a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II and received a bronze star. Surviving are his daughters, Dolores A. Goff, of Bedford, and Joyce A. Ault and husband, David, of Forest; three grandchildren, Priscilla Goff, Christina Beckwith and Stephanie Beckwith; and a great-granddaughter, Haylee Furrow; a brother, Glenn Allen, of Argonia, Kan. Lowry Lee Holmes Jr. Lowry Lee Holmes Jr. entered into eternal rest Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, in Avante Nursing Home. He was born in Lynchburg on Dec. 3, 1932, to the late Lowry Lee Holmes Sr. and Clara Jones H. Harris. In additon to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Spinner. He is survived by two devoted children, a son, Larry Lee Spinner (Lavonia), and a daughter, Valerie Organ (Leon), all of Lynchburg; one aunt, Bessie Bryant; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one god daughter, Andrea Smith; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was born in Castlewood, son of the late Mack and Cora Skeen Hall. He was preceded in death by one sister, Josephine Vicars; and two brothers, Dwight Hall and Robin Hall. He was a member of Hamlin Baptist Church and was employed by Pittston Coal Company for 34 years. Doug loved helping others and gave of himself freely. He enjoyed growing vegetables, flowers, bird watching, and telling others about each of his hobbies. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Linda Hall; one daughter, Michelle Oakley and husband, John, of Carson, Va.; one son, Kevin W. Milton Reese LeRoy

LeROY, Milton Reese, 87, passed away at home in Bridgewater Retirement Community on September 16, 2010. Born November 7, 1922, in McCormick, S.C., Milton grew up in upper South Carolina. He graduated from Clemson College, where he was a member of Blue Key Honor Society, Tiger Brotherhood, president of YMCA and Cadet Captain. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in July of 1943 and served with Tank Destroyers and the 47th Infantry Regiment of the Ninth Division in Germany, where he was a Battalion Adjutant and a rifle company commander. Milton graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1950 and earned his STM from Seabury-Western Seminary. He served as a priest in the Episcopal Church as a missionary to Cuba, where he was in charge of several missions and later was Professor of Pastoral Theology and Christian Education at the Matanzas Theological Seminary. He returned to the U.S. in 1961 and was employed by the Episcopal Church as Executive Secretary of Overseas Education. From 1963-66, he taught at St. Margaret's House in Berkeley, California. He came to Virginia in 1966 and was employed by the Diocese of Virginia in staff positions and finally as Archdeacon before he retired in 1985. Thereafter, he and his wife, Jean, directed a private retreat center at Welling Hall until 1990, when they developed an intentional community with nine families living at the Cliffs in Doswell, Va. Milton is survived by Jean Leonard, his wife of 64 years; as well as two sons, Leonard and Phillip; a daughter, Jenanne Eppard; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Richard Onex Bolling Richard Onex Bolling, 87, of Bedford, passed away Friday, Sept. 17, 2010. He was born in Bedford County, on July 15, 1923, a son of the late Joseph Green Bolling and Angie Barbour Bolling. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Bailey Bolling. They have three children, Richard Bailey Bolling and his wife, Carol, of Bedford, and two daughters, Carol Bolling Thompson and husband, John, of Orlando, Fla., and Anne Bolling Saad, and husband Alex, of Vienna. His four dearly beloved grandchildren, Catherine Bolling, Patrick Bolling, Matthew Bolling and Andrew Bolling, of Bedford, brought much joy in his life. He is also survived by five sisters, Edith Maxey, of Vinton, Estelle Gearhart, of Homosassa, Fla., Magdalene Patterson and Kathleen Wilkerson, both of Bedford, and Caroline Tuck, of Roanoke, as well as two brothers, Ray Bolling, of Hardy, and J.R. (Buddy) Bolling, of Bedford. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Malcolm Bolling, Russell Bolling, Odell Bolling and Clanton Bolling, and a sister, Pauline Bolling Martin. He was blessed with a large and extended family that he loved and spent many hours of togetherness with great joy and happiness. Onex grew up a country boy, a foundation he never lost, on a farm in Huddleston. After graduating from Huddleston High School, he proudly served his country as a U.S. Naval Armed Guard in World War II on a gasoline tanker. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean several times protecting much needed fuel for the D-Day invasion. He served in both the European and Pacific Theaters of War. After the war, he graduated from Phillips Business College in Lynchburg and received a degree in accounting. It was at Phillips he met and married the love of his life, Helen Bailey. A highly respected business and civic leader, Onex was President of Murray and Bolling Chevrolet Inc. and was an automobile dealer in Bedford for more than 60 years. In 1990, he was elected President of the Virginia Automobile Dealers Association, which served all the automobile dealers in the state of Virginia. In 1997, he was awarded the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award in Atlanta, Georgia. This award is the highest honor an automobile dealer can receive. He was blessed with a long life and continued to participate in the business he enjoyed for many years. His love for his hometown was expressed by his active participation in many community projects. He was President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1958 and was selected as Bedford's Outstanding Young Man of the Year. In 1976, he was elected to serve as President of the Bedford Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Bedford Advisory Board of the First National Exchange Bank for more than 20 years. A dedicated member of Main Street United Methodist Church, he was active on many committees, including Chairman of the Administrative Board, and served on the Board of Directors of the United Methodist Retirement Home in Salem. Velma Constance "Connie" Bouknight

Velma C. Bouknight Velma Constance "Connie" Bouknight, 88, of Wytheville died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, at 3 p.m. at the Bethel A.M.E. Church with the Revs. Samuel Patterson and Leonard Davis officiating. Inurnment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. She was born Aug. 24, 1922, in Salem and was a resident of Wytheville for 42 years coming from Brooklyn, N.Y. She was the dietary manager for Asbury Center at Birdmont in Wytheville for 17 years. She was a long-standing and dedicated member of Bethel A.M.E. Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew Bouknight; and a son, Ron Bouknight. Survivors include a daughter, Nannette Bouknight of Newport News; two grandchildren, Jenna and Latrice; and one great-grandchild. The family will receive friends Saturday, Sept. 18, from 2 to 3 p.m. (service time) at the church. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Vernon Calvin Bibb Vernon Calvin (Toady) Bibb, of Lynchburg, took his last earthly flight on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010. Born Nov. 16, 1927, in Lynchburg, a son of the late Elsby Leon Bibb and Cleopatra Hicks Bibb. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Kathyleen Ryan Bibb. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Kathy Bibb, of Roanoke; his beloved cat, Millie; a brother, Leon Bibb, and his wife, Ruth, of Mount Dora, Fla.; and his cousins, Patra Bedwell, of Roanoke, and Gail Thomas, of Bedford. Toady retired from Limitorque Corporation after 40+ years of service. He was a man of many talents, from singing and dancing in Lynchburg Fine Arts Center Productions, Little Theater, to singing in barbershop quartets, riding Harleys, fishing, to building his own aircraft and flying, which was his main passion in life. There wasn't much that he missed. He was a true lover of life and all the adventures that it could provide. But most of all, he was a giver. He gave of his time, his talents and his innate ability to want to help people. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, in the Chapel of Tharp Funeral Home, with the Rev. C. Douglas Pillow officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. Painter, age 88, of Manassas Park, passed away at Prince William Hospital on Wednesday, September 15, 2010., Born July 12, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Douglas and Amy Litten. She attended Loch Lomond Baptist Church and was an active member of the Manassas Park Seniors Club. Her hobbies included reading, exercising, and taking care of her beloved "Buddy" the Bird., Mrs. Painter was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Painter. Survivors include her daughters, Myra Gauthier of Virginia Beach, Dawn Roop and her husband Lloyd Roop of Manassas, two sons, Byron Painter and his wife Shirley of Catlett, Dwight Painter of the home, along with seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Violet Coleman Houser, 98, of Hopewell died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010. Mrs. Houser was born in Chase City, Va., and had been a Hopewell resident since 1922. She was a member of First Christian Church. Mrs. Houser and her late husband, Albert, owned and operated Houser Brothers Market for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin S. and Effie Ward Coleman, her husband, Albert George Houser, a son, Charles Clyde Crocker, grandson, Charles Cameron Crocker, her sisters, Alease Miller, Bessie Baldwin, Mamie Rideout, Lila Sadler, Kathryn C. Stroup, Leita C. Bednarick and Leona C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene L. Campbell; her daughter, Peggy Walker Sydnor; and her sister and brother-in-law, Rachel and Charles Hicks., She attended Marshall College in Huntington, Wes Virginia. She was an active member of Allendale Methodist Church in St. Petersburg, Florida, and upon moving to Charlottesville in 1993, she attended St. Paul's Memorial Church. She was an avid golfer, gardener, bridge player and sports fan., Blanche is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Walker Pettygrove and her husband, Marshall ; her son-in-law, Dr.T. Austin Sydnor Jr.; her grandchildren, Thomas E. Sydnor and his wife, Hunter, of Denver, Colorado, Margaret Sydnor Jenkins and her husband, Bryant, of Wilson, North Carolina, Anne Austin Sydnor of Charlotte, North Carolina, A. Scott Pietsch and his wife, Erin, of Boise, Idaho, R.
