LEIGH, Alvin Ashton Jr., 73, of Chesterfield, died October 2, 2010 at his home. Arrangements by Hogg Funeral Home and Crematory, Gloucester Point.


 


 

Andrew Jackson "Jack" Collier

Andrew Jackson "Jack" Collier BRISTOL, Va. Andrew Jackson "Jack" Collier, 95, went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 2, 2010. Jack was born on July 28, 1915, in Osaka, Va., and lat er moved with his family to Stonega, Va., where he lived during his school years. Jack was the youngest and last surviving child of the late Creed and Ethel Stewart Collier. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Millard Collier and wife Beulah, Wayne Collier and wife Lola; and sister, Carrie Collier Quinley and husband Elmo. Jack graduated from Appalachia High School, where he was a proud member of the Appalachia Bulldogs football team. It was there that he met his beloved Georgia Rhea Head (Collier), whom he married on Dec. 26, 1937. They were blessed with 72 years together, until her passing on Feb. 20, 2010. Their precious daughter, Daryl Louise Collier, who preceded them in death, is now reunited with her parents in Heaven. Jack proudly served his country in the U.S. Naval Reserve during, aboard the U.S.S. Fond du Lac, which supported the U.S. offensive in the Pacific theatre. He was seaman first class, serving with the Fleet Camera Party stationed in Hawaii. After the war, he returned to his family, working as sales manager of M.D. Collier Furniture, Appalachia, W.B. Green Furniture, Kingsport, Tenn., and Pound Hardware and Furniture in Pound, Va. He and Georgia Rhea then established Jack Collier Furniture with stores in Gate City, Big Stone Gap, and Appalachia, and worked together until retirement. Jack loved the Lord and his church, First Baptist Church of Gate City, Va., serving as deacon, chairman of deacons, and Sunday school director for many years. In later years, he had a special heart for serving in the nursery and visiting the sick and homebound. He was a loving Christian husband, father, and grandfather; and he cherished the time he spent with his family. Survivors include daughters, Linda Sample and husband George of Greeneville, Tenn., Debra Hughes and husband Rick of Bristol Virginia; special granddaughter, Lauren Hughes of Allen, Texas; several nieces and nephews; and special friend and caregiver, Vicky Salyer. The family is grateful to the staff of NHC Healthcare of Bristol and Barbara Gibson for their compassionate care. A celebration of Jack's life will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA, with Rev. Jeff DeBoard presiding. Visitation will be from 1:30 3 p.m. prior to the service. Pallbearers will be John Quinley, Patrick Quinley, Kenneth Collier, Chad Collier, Tom Collier, and Bob Collier. The committal service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 11 a.m. at American Legion Cemetery, Big Stone Gap, Va. Betty Jane Peters Ring CASTLEWOOD, Va. Betty Jane Peters Ring, 81, died of complications of PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, in Grace Healthcare, Abingdon, Va. She was born in Castlewood, daughter of the late Nathaniel Gose and Anna Laura Porter Peters. She was a 50-year member of the Clinch Valley Chapter O.E.S. No. 152, was a Worthy Matron, and Grand Representative to the State of Tennessee. She retired from Castlewood Elementary School. She was a member of the Fort Gibson United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert W. "Billy" Ring Jr. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Robert W. "Bill" Ring; two daughters, Sue Ring Lambert of Abingdon, and Kathy Litsas and husband, John, of Raleigh, N.C.; one son, Bobby Ring and wife, Vivian of Mebane, N.C.; one sister, Nell Colvard and husband, William, of Castlewood; six grandchildren, Matt Lambert, Amanda Lambert, Brandon Ring, Kelsey Ring, Stephen Litsas, and Monica Litsas; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Betty Jane Peters Ring will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, with Rev. Harry Layell officiating. The O.E.S. memorial service will be conducted at 7:45 p.m. by the Clinch Valley Chapter No. 152. Committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at Ring's Cemetery, Castlewood. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home and go in procession leaving for the cemetery at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday. Eben Elliott Smith Jr., 84, died peacefully on Monday, September 27, 2010, at Hospice House in Charlottesville, Virginia., He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on May 16, 1926, to Eben Elliott Smith Sr. and Priscilla Dimick Crosby., Eben lived with his younger sister, Priscilla "Suki" Christoffers, and his parents in San Diego, Los Angeles, Providence, Jacksonville and Washington, D.C. He attended St. Albans School., In 1944 he enlisted and served in the Philippines in the 632nd Tank Destroyer Battalion, and upon returning attended Brown University under the G.I. bill, earning a B.S. in Geology., He worked in D.C. as a cartographer with the Army Map Service from 1953 until 1962, then as an analyst at the Foreign Science and Technology Center from 1962 until 1983, where he used his cartographic skills and his knowledge of Russian. When FSTC moved to Charlottesville in 1970, he followed with his family for what he called "the best years of my life." After taking early retirement from his career, he drove a Jaunt bus, making new friends while traversing the area, then collected gypsy moth data, trekking across the Albemarle County landscape., Over the years, Eben volunteered for numerous causes. In Northern Virginia he maintained trails through the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club and assisted the Greenbelt Consumers Cooperative and Northern Virginia Fair Housing. In Charlottesville he was an active member of the Temple Beth Israel buildings and grounds committee, helped with construction on the Sunday School, and participated in Hadassah activities. He assisted Meals on Wheels, relished being an Ivy Creek trail guide, served on the Board of Directors for Citizens for Albemarle, and was a Vice President in the National Railway Historical Society. Since 2003 he has been an active member of the Unity Church. One of his most significant contributions has been to the Rivanna Trails Foundation, where he served as a founding member of the board since 1992, creating maps and historical records and helping build the loop trail around Charlottesville., Eben met Martha Florence Rozman at Army Map Service, they married on September 1, 1957, and supported each other until her death on January 18, 2003., He is survived by three children and their spouses, Gary Michael Smith and Debbie Smith, Gayla Michelle Mills and Eugene Mills, and Gregory Mitchell Smith and Erika Herz; four grandchildren, Justin and Talia Smith, and Cole and Kienan Smith; and a great- grandson, Leo Smith. Eben also shared his life with Cyndi Lou, Corky, Dawny, Tippy, Old Bay, Dory, and Tasha; and friends too numerous and dear to recount., A memorial service will be held at Hill and Wood Funeral Home, 201 North First Street, 2 p.m. Saturday, October 9, 2010., The family suggests that donations be made either to the Hospice of the Piedmont or to an organization of your choice.

She was born in Richmond on February 12, 1920 and was a lifelong resident of Petersburg until she moved to Virginia Beach with her sister Mae (of blessed memory) in August 2000. She was retired from her career as a civil servant with the U.S. Army, Ft. Lee, Va. She was predeceased by her parents; by her half-sister and half-brother, Esther and Moses; and by her sisters and brothers, Blanche, Lillie, Dorothy, Mae, Jack, Phillip and Sidney (all of blessed memory). She is survived by her brother, Daniel of New York City; by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Jack Barney of Virginia Beach; by nieces and nephews, Marlene Braver Wilks and Deborah Barney Kaufman, both of Norfolk, Michael E. Barney of Virginia Beach and David (Duffy) J. Barney of Annandale; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews. A graveside service and interment were held on Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 3 p.m. at Brith Achim Cemetery, Petersburg, Va., with Rabbi Dennis Beck-Berman officiating. J.T. McKEATHERN, James Alvin, 77, passed away October 1, 2010. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Fred and Alverta W. McKeathern. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gertrude B. McKeathern, of Bracey, Va.; daughters, Margaret A. McKeathern of Rockville, Md. and Elizabeth B. McKeathern of Raleigh, N.C.; one cousin, Richard "Butch" Harris of Richmond, Va.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, James Bennett, deceased (Marie), Joseph Bennett (Julia), Claude Bennett (Rose), Alfred Bennett (Wilma, deceased), Willie L. Bennett (Gloria), Freddie Bennett (Colleen), Margaret Meade (Milton), and Shirley Kirton; as well as many other relatives and friends. He was a loving husband and father. A graduate of Virginia State University, he was a decorated retired lieutenant colonel who served in the Army for 22 years, with tours of duty in Vietnam, Korea, and Germany. He went on to a second career as a seventh and eighth grade physical science teacher at Park View Middle School in Mecklenburg County, Va., from which he also retired after 22 years. During his time of teaching he received several awards for Outstanding Service in Education. In addition, Mr. McKeathern was a longtime member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Bracey, Va., where he served faithfully in several capacities, including as a lay reader. He performed the duties of lay reader at a number of the Episcopal churches he attended over the years. He also was a life member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Oris P. Jones Funeral Establishment, 301 West Atlantic Street, South Hill, Va. (434-447-7158) on Monday, October 4, 2010. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Bracey, Va. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Please omit all food items. She was born in Halifax County on March 10, 1945, to the late Archer and Kathryn Oakley Franklin, and was married to Billy H. McCormick. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church and of American Legion Post 8 Auxiliary, and was a retired employee of The Woodview. Surviving are her husband, of the home; 3 daughters, Tabitha Maddox and husband, Andy, of Forest, Shelley McAvoy and husband, Jason, also of Forest, and Shelia Trent and husband, Dale, of South Boston; and seven grandchildren, Blane Maddox, Allison Maddox, Olivia McAvoy, Leigha McAvoy, Heather Trent, Patches Trent and Matthew Trent. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Bill Blane. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. John William Dickens John William Dickens, 61, of Harrisonburg, passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 2010. Born Sept. 25, 1949, he was the son of Edgar and Elberta Dickens of Leesburg. Mr. Dickens received bachelor's and master's degrees from Virginia Tech and a doctorate from Ohio State. He taught agricultural education for three years at the University of Kentucky. In 1981, he moved with his family to Harrisonburg and taught at James Madison University for the next 20 years. During that time, he was active in the Beginning Teacher Assistance Program and the Skyline Literacy Program. He was a longtime member of Harrisonburg Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and church moderator. Mr. Dickens was an avid and adventurous fisherman, a voracious reader and a master of crossword puzzles. He cherished the annual summer vacations he spent with his family and with the Sprinkel and Bugg families, including the last 25 years at Holden Beach, N.C. He was, most of all, a devoted husband and a doting father. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Pat Dickens, daughter, Elizabeth, and son-in-law, Derek Turner, of La Plata, Md., and daughter, Caroline Dickens, of Harrisonburg. He is also survived by brother, Edgar, and sister-in-law, Mary Dickens, of Winchester, sister, Edna, and brother-in-law, Earskon Myers, of Brunswick, Md., sister, Carol Lux, of Powhatan, and sister-in-law, Jean Covington, of Prospect. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Carl Dickens, of Texas, in-laws Henry and Ruby Covington, of Hixburg, and brothers-in-law Eddie Covington and Henry Earl Covington, both of Hixburg. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at Harrisonburg Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jack Mercer officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Madeline E. Jones, of Crozet, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 1, 2010, after a decade long battle with Parkinson's Disease., She was born on June 6, 1925, in a coal mining town, Dunham, Kentucky, which later became known as Jenkins, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Cecil M. Elledge of Hayes, North Carolina, and Varina A. Elledge of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina., She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Ray B. Jones, and their three children, James R. Jones and his wife, Deborah B., of Crozet, and their children, Rachel, Jamey, Sarah, and Esther; a daughter, Deborah L. Jones of Crozet; and another son, Richard A. Jones and his wife, Faye, also of Crozet., She is also survived by a nephew, John Elledge and his wife, Florence, of Afton, and many great-nieces and nephews including John Jr., Dennis, and Lisa., She was preceded in death by her brother, Cecil M. Elledge Jr. of Gary, Indiana; and a sister, Vivian Gordon of Roanoke, Virginia., She grew up in Jenkins, Kentucky, and later moved to Fairlawn, Virginia, where she completed high school and went on to Radford College for completion of an associate's degree in Business. Shortly thereafter she met her future husband, Ray, a student at Virginia Tech, at the time Ray was president of his fraternity, and Madeline became his sponsor, enjoying many social events there. She was his dance partner and became his life partner as they were married on December 30, 1950., They moved to Covesville, then Petersburg, Virginia, and later to Albemarle County, where they settled to raise their family. She was employed for several years at Acme Visible Records in Crozet and later for over 20 years as a bookkeeper at Barnes Lumber Company. During that time, she was a long time member and past president of the Crozet Women's Club, and Crozet Moonlighter's Chapter of the Homemaker's Extension Club., Madeline enjoyed nothing more than her family and celebrating her life with them. Special friends in her life included Chris and Art Baber formerly of Crozet, now of LaLuz, New Mexico., She will be particularly remembered for her wonderful cooking and homemaking skills, a compassion for those in need, and her love and care for her family., The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of caregivers that attended their loved one, Renee, Lisa, Leslie and Paula over the years. Mrs. Margaret Burgess Sampson, 76, of Hopewell, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, in Hopewell Health Care Center., Mrs. Sampson was born on Oct. 30, 1933, in Newark, N.J., and grew up in Montclair, N.J. She lived at home while she attended school at Upsala College in East Orange, N.J., and Rutgers College of Nursing in Newark, N.J., where she received a BS in nursing. While a student at Upsala College she met and married her husband, Lt. Col. Richard Edward Sampson, on May 31, 1958, in Grace Presbyterian Church, Montclair, N.J., son of Eric Garfield Sampson and Ellyn Agnes Christine Hanson. Richard and Margaret have written several books on the peoples of Eastern Kentucky. Among them are Marriage Book I, "Leslie County, Kentucky, 1879-1885," "Leslie County, Kentucky Deaths 1995," " Leslie County, Kentucky Marriages 1884-1894" and "Descendants of Thomas Begley.", In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Oliver R. Sampson (Margo Nowlin Sampson) Imnenstaad, Germany, Eric R. Mark Alan Harman Mark Alan Harman, of Roanoke and Lynchburg, died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Oct. 1, 2010. He was born Aug. 27, 1957. Mark leaves behind his fianc‚e, Sharon Creasy; four children, Brett Harman and wife, Jessica, Elizabeth Shoulders and husband, David, and Margaret (Maggie) Harman and Caroline Harman; and Sharon's son, Brian Creasy, and wife, Alison. Also surviving are Mark's parents, Richard E. and Margaret Harman; two brothers, Rick Harman Jr. and wife, Cathy, and Tommy Harman and wife, Beth; and two sisters, Karen Sydenstricker and husband, John, and Dana Graninger and husband, Harry. Also left to cherish Mark's memory are numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, special aunt, Barbara Dickerson, and devoted friend, Melody Baker. Mark was also blessed to be a grandfather to Brett and Jessica's son, Landen. Mark graduated from Patrick Henry High School, where he excelled in football, earning first team All-State honors. Mark was then awarded a football scholarship to Randolph- Macon College, where he received All-Conference honors for two consecutive years. Mark was well known for his keen sense of humor. He was a charismatic, bright and well-liked individual. He was also very good hearted, thoughtful, caring and loving. He will be greatly missed. Ricky was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Wolfe Kline; his father, Lewis "Lukie" Kline; his grandfather, Leo "Marblehead" Barnett; and his beloved and loyal K-9s, Megan Denise Wolfe Kline and Darrell Waltrip Wolfe Kline. He is survived by his mother, Marie Kline; his heart's "Sunshine" and caregiver, Paulette Klein; brother, Michael Kline and his wife, Joy; nephew, Jeff; niece, Jill; his stepson, Patrick Wright and his wife, Cathy; and stepgrandson, Taylor Kelly. Ricky lived each and every day by his code of life, "Loyalty," "Respect," "Honor," and "Dependability" as taught by his parents, and along with his motto of "work hard, play hard, and live life to the fullest." For years, RK enjoyed organizing and participating in charity fundraising events for Children's Hospital of Richmond, Special Olympics of Richmond, Richmond SPCA and individuals who had come upon hard times. RK was a member of the Sandston Moose Family Center for 33 years where he enjoyed many social functions and serving the local community. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. Moose Service on Monday, October 4, 2010 at Nelsen Funeral Home & Crematory, 4650 S. "Buddy", Ronald F. Leake Ronald F. "Buddy" Leake of Amissville, Va. died on October 2, 2010 at Fauquier Hospital. He was born in Albermarle County, Virginia to the late Arthur W. and Mildred H. Leake., Buddy was the former owner of Belvoir Electronics and currently worked for Eastern Applicators as a drywall finisher since 1964. He also served his country in the U.S., Reserves being discharged Nov. 30, 1964. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Barbara Russell and Betty Jo Collier. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Majorie Lavenia Reese Leake; a son, Ronald F. She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church and a retired employee of The Lane Company. She is survived by a son, Wayne K. Bruce and his wife Irene of Hurt; a sister, Ruth Eades of Hurt; four grandchildren, Keith Bruce, Dean Bruce, Rhonda Wooldridge, and Candice Bruce; one great granddaughter, Savannah; and a special neighbor, Vince Gryctko.
