Charles F. Hudler VIRGINIA BEACH - Chuck Hudler passed away Saturday afternoon, Oct. 2, 2010 at his home in Troy, Mont., of a heart attack. He was 67 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents and in 2008, his wife, Sandy, of 33 years. He is survived by his daughter, Deb Deatrick and her husband Ted; son, Joe Hudler; brother, John Hudler; also, one granddaughter, Mary Deatrick; four grandsons, Charlie Deatrick, Cody, Jesse and Wyatt Hudler; and many nieces, nephews and family members who all adored him and will miss him dearly. Chuck was raised in Oregon and graduated with an engineering degree from Oregon State before moving to Virginia Beach in 1967 where he began his career with Damuth Trane as a sales engineer. Later in his career, he moved to Portland, Ore., and held the position of general manager and retired from the Trane Company there in 2007. Chuck first visited Troy, Mont., in the early 1980s and quickly adopted the area as his home away from home. Though it took Chuck and his wife, Sandy almost 20 years to make Troy their full-time residence, they embraced the area and visited often. It took more than a decade, but a log cabin home was completed in 2005. In 2007 Chuck and his wife, Sandy, truly retired and started a new adventure in Troy, Mont. Chuck never met a stranger and was blessed with an infectious personality and sincere interest in people. All who knew him are better people for it and will truly miss him. Chuck loved dogs almost as much as people, and was never without one. His last "little dog," Kootenai, loved to hunt almost as much as Chuck did and they spent hours in the field together. In Chuck's most recent months, he met Linda in Troy, Mont., after they both suffered great losses and found new reasons to enjoy life and all it had to offer. Chuck's mantra of "live in the moment" is a lesson for all of us. "Plan your work, work your plan," - Chuck Hudler A service for Chuck was held in Troy, Mont., on Oct 7. A graveside service will be held for the family, Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. at Princess Anne Memorial Park, in Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to "Memorial at the Troy Park." Please make checks payable to: Ralph Lippert and mail to him at 2234 Lake Creek Road, Troy, MT 59935. |

David Mark Bailey, 44, of Earlysville, died of brain cancer on Saturday, October 2, 2010, in Charlottesville, Virginia, and was welcomed into everlasting life at his place at the Table with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ., David was born February 26, 1966, the son of Kenneth and Ethel Bailey, missionaries to the Middle East. For the first 22 years of his life, his home was Beirut, Lebanon, including the first 10 years of the Lebanese civil war. Because of war, the family was obliged to evacuate first to Switzerland in 1967, and later to Cyprus in 1982. David's two final years of high school were completed in a private school in Germany because he was, as a young man, especially vulnerable on the streets of Beirut., David attended Grove City College in western Pennsylvania, where he met and married his soul mate, Leslie McGarvey, of Emlenton, Pennsylvania. During his college years, he was active as a performing songwriter, playing evening and weekend gigs with a music partner. He also enjoyed choir, frat life, acting, and organizing an underground newspaper. David graduated with majors in English and Communication Arts. In the late 1980's, David and Leslie relocated to the Washington, D.C., area where David worked for the United States government in satellite imagery analysis. His career evolved to training and then program management with numerous software subcontractors, ending with employment with Eastman Software in Massachusetts., Their daughter, Kelcey, was born in 1992, and son, Cameron, in 1994., The day prior to moving to the Boston area, in July of 1996, David was diagnosed with brain cancer - Glioblastoma Multiforme IV (GBM). He was expected to have fewer than two years to live. Eager to have his life make a difference in the lives of others, he gave up his career in the software industry and, with a great leap of faith, launched a third career as a performing songwriter - a "troubadour of hope." Following two surgeries, radiation, experimental chemotherapy and nuclear therapy, David criss-crossed America (and Europe) singing in coffee houses and churches, for cancer conferences and cancer survivor groups for 12 years. David wrote all of his own songs, which grew out of his experiences of war and of battling a deadly cancer. He sang of faith, hope, love, and of living life to it's fullest each day. He experienced a recurrence of brain cancer in late 2008, recovering enough to tour in 2009 and early 2010. Enduring numerous additional surgeries and difficult treatments, David made a final tour in July of this year., David is survived by Leslie, his wife of 23 years; his children, Kelcey and Cameron; his parents, Kenneth and Ethel Bailey; a sister, Sara Makari and her husband, Victor; numerous sisters- and brothers-in-law and eight nieces and nephews., To quote a line from one of David's songs, "The tears of the angels form a river where you can wash your pain, and even in the middle of the thunder, don't forget the love inside the rain." His theme was "There may be years of tears behind you, but right now you've got One More Day." He leaves behind him a musical legacy of 23 professionally-recorded CDs. His music and his personal testimony have affected the lives of countless thousands in this country and around the world., The family offers deep gratitude to Doctor Henry Friedman, Doctor Allan Friedman and Doctor David Reardon at Duke and Doctor David Schiff at University of Virginia Medical Center and their caring staffs. We also offer loving thanks to our family of caregivers at the Hospice House and Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville., Memorial gifts are welcome and may be made to Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church, 6566 Spring Hill Road, Ruckersville, VA 22968. Half of those gifts will be equally divided between the following brain tumor organizations, The American Brain Tumor Association, the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, Gray Matters Foundation, the Florida Brain Tumor Association and T.H.E. Brain Trust. |

Janice Lankford Baum NORFOLK - Janice Lankford Baum died as she lived: peacefully overlooking the Currituck Sound surrounded by her loved ones on Sept. 12, 2010. Born Oct. 13, 1912, to Pastor William Eley Lankford and wife Celia Pearl Cox in Appomattox, Va., Janice was raised in Drewryville, where her father served as pastor of Thomas Memorial Baptist Church. Janice graduated from Averett College. When folks asked her how she lived so productively for so long, Janice would reply: "I eat right, I do right, and I love everybody!" And so she did, praising her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ all the way along. She was taught to serve as was her older brother McClenny, who served as an Army nurse during World War II and the Korean conflict and later attended President Dwight Eisenhower following a heart attack. Although not trained medically, we called her "our Florence Nightingale" because she looked after many who were infirmed and often chauffeured others to their doctors' appointments. After college, Janice moved to Norfolk and won the heart of Cecil Forbes as well as the hearts of his family. The Forbes family was close to Janice following the death of husband Cecil and remained so throughout her life. She continued to care for Uncle Billy Burgess in Norfolk after the loss of his Helen until he left this world shortly before his 100th birthday. Janice wed and sustained E.O. "Jack" Baum of Elizabeth City, N.C., earlier widowed by Submit Fearing, another dear friend of Janice. Janice worked at the Mary Pretlow Memorial Library in Ocean View until mandatory retirement at age 70. After Jack moved to heaven, Janice cared for her longtime friend Mrs. Eoline "Tommy" Binford of Norfolk until her passing. Janice traveled to Charlottesville in August 2009 for a Binford Family Reunion, where she was thrilled to spend time with her Binny Boy, renowned archeologist Dr. Lewis Roberts Binford and wife Amber of Missouri. For the past few years, Janice Lankford Baum blessed the Moyock, N.C., home of her cousin Wesley and Bette Jo Baum and adopted granddaughter, Marybeth Hunter. Although Janice had no natural children, she loved many as if they were her own including her brother's children in Colorado: Maxine Lankford, Michael and Linda Lewis Lankford and Michelle and Leroy Salazar and children Gabe, Lukas and Rosie Salazar. Janice received many friends and relatives on the Currituck Sound including: Linwood Tabb III and wife Marcia and Lee Tabb Lauterbach, nephew and niece of Uncle Billy Burgess. Her adopted son from Tennessee, Manfred Wendland, stayed beside Janice through her final weeks. Janice Lankford Baum was a truly gentle soul, who always found something for which to be thankful in even the most difficult circumstances. Her kindness and humor and grace serve as a shining example to all who knew and loved her. Serving faithfully to the end, Janice donated her body to East Carolina University Medical School. Her dedicated life will be honored by family and friends upon return of her ashes. |

Jennifer Eve Kotvas VIRGINIA BEACH - Jennifer Eve Kotvas, 38, rode the train to glory in the early morning of Oct. 5, 2010 in West Palm Beach. How can we sum a life in one brief obituary? We can say who survived her: her parents, Jack and Jacqueline Kotvas, her brother, Jeffery Eric Kotvas, and her sisters, Vanessa Miner and Krissy Kotvas. We can pronounce those who have gone before: her mother Ethel Marie, her brother, John Edward Kotvas III and her many grandparents. We can speak of her many accomplishments: her graduation from Green Run High School, her work at Old Dominion University, her degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and her years of work as a pharmacist in South Florida, and her love for running many miles at dawn and her biking miles at dusk. Or, we can say who she touched: She loved Christ and loved his children from the street beggar to the doctor. Jennifer was a believer in heaven, earthly hope, and the kindness of angels masquerading as strangers. She was loved by many she touched and she loved them in return. She will be sorely missed. A graveside service will be held at the Princess Anne Memorial Park on Great Neck Road in Virginia Beach Thursday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Ave., West Palm Beach, FL 33407 to assist others as they depart this life. |

Ruth K. Scarlott NORFOLK - Prize-winning local artist Ruth K. Scarlott, 87, died peacefully Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010. With her that morning, was her devoted husband of 67 years, Frederick R. Scarlott. Born in Reidsville, N.C. Oct. 27, 1922, Ruth was the daughter of Joseph L. Knowles and Virginia E. Carter Knowles. In addition to Ruth's sister, Virginia Rich and her brother, William Knowles, many other cherished family members predeceased her. Ruth was an honors graduate of Minerva High School in Ohio and an avid student of religious history and the arts throughout her life. During the 1940s she worked as a lab tech at Wright Field and in Mansfield, Ohio. Ruth was a self-taught artist who, in 1957, painted the baptismal mural for a church in Norfolk's Bayview area. In the 1960s she joined a newly forming art association known today as the TAA, or Tidewater Art Alliance. Thus began 50 years of Ruth's participation in local and regional juried art shows. For many years she enjoyed teaching carefully researched lessons for the Found Faithful class at Ocean View Presbyterian. In addition to Ruth's husband Fred, survivors include: a daughter, Carol A. Waters and her husband Steve; son, Joseph C. Scarlott and his wife Susan; grandson, John F. Waters and wife Anita; granddaughter, Stephanie L. Herron and husband Dwight, grandson Michael J. Scarlott and wife Nikki; great-grandchildren, Emily, Jacob, and Daniel Waters and their mother Jennifer; great-grandchildren, Sadie Herron, and Xander and Grey Scarlott; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ruth's family, close neighbors in Pinewell, friends at church, and her dear friends in the Hampton Roads art community knew her as a private soul and a teller of truth as she saw it. She always strove for perfection, measuring her time by art show deadlines. Ruth savored special moments spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She looked forward to each new day and never stopped exercising her brain or her right to vote. Her memory will continue to inspire all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, Ruth requested that donations be made to the Lions Club, which once provided her brother Billy with a much-needed pair of glasses; to the Salvation Army, which saved her family one winter long ago with a food basket; or to the local food bank program Fishes and Loaves, c/o Jim Miller, at the church address below. A celebration of life service begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at Ocean View Presbyterian Church, 9200 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, VA 23503. The Rev. Arthur Jensen will preside. |
