Claudia Douglas Rose

Claudia Douglas Rose Claudia Douglas Rose was born Aug. 21, 1951, in Amherst, to the late Richard Douglas and Annie Douglas Hudson. She was one of three children. She was predeceased by her older brother, Richard Douglas Jr. Claudia was educated in the Amherst County school system and at an early age joined St. Mark Baptist Church in Amherst. She had an outgoing personality and loved to laugh and show off her beautiful smile. That smile of hers caught the attention of a young man named George Rose, and in 1967, they were married. To this union five children were born. She is predeceased by two of her children: a son, Terry, and a daughter, Melinda. They raised their remaining children, Terri, Keith and Kimberly, in Amherst, close to family. Claudia had a strong desire and passion to serve her country, and so in 1973, during the Vietnam War, she enlisted in the United States Army, where she served proudly for eight years, traveling the world and even living in Germany for a period of time. She settled in Fayetteville, N.C., after her discharge, where she continued her work in Civil Service until she became ill in 1995. At that time, Claudia became a resident of Link Haw Place residential nursing home in Lumberton, N.C., where she received a phenomenal amount of care, love and attention from the dedicated staff who always made her smile, especially Ms. Bonnie, who had been with Claudia since her first day there. Claudia was known for her stubbornness (before and after her illness), and so she fought a good fight for many years, never giving up or giving in. On Oct. 26, 2010, God called Claudia home, and she went peacefully with her children by her side. There was no fightonly a smile. Claudia leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter, Terri Rose, loving son, Keith Rose, and caring daughter, Kimberly Rose, all of Fayetteville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Terance, Terrell and Tyshon Rose; one brother, Alan B. Hudson, and his wife, Shakeena, of Lynchburg; one nephew, Zion Anderson; two nieces, Aayliya Robertson and Annisa Jones; special aunts, Shirley Carter and Ernestine Rose (Roosevelt), of Amherst, and Elaine Carter (Robert) of Mt. Laurel, N.J.; and a host of other uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. Thomas Ashley Garraghty

Thomas Ashley Garraghty Ashley was born Dec. 15, 1922, in Bedford County. Ashley was known by all as a master story-teller, and he finished the last chapter of his life's story on Oct. 28, 2010, when he went to be with his Lord. Ashley is survived by his dear wife, Betty, with whom he celebrated 44 years of marriage this past July 29th. He is also survived by his three loving children, Jean (Herbert) McBride, of Roanoke, David (Martha), of Richmond, and Preston (Lori), of Bloomington, Ind. Ashley is also survived by his brother, Ernest (Shirley), of Ferrum, and his sisters, Coretta (Rita) Sowder, of Blue Ridge, Marianne (Johnny) Wydner, of Lynchburg, and Myrianne (Roy) Padgett, of Goode. Ashley is also survived by his grandchildren, David (Katy) Garraghty, of Richmond, Jenni (Tom) Schroeder, of Roanoke, and Jackie Kepler, of Daleville; and his great-grandchildren, Ben and Drew Schroeder, of Roanoke, Patrick and Jordyn Kepler, of Daleville, and the newest light of his life, Josephine Garraghty, of Richmond. Ashley is also survived by his aunt, Ann Hanel, of Forest; sisters-in-law, Betty Lee Garraghty, of Goode, and Mabel and Eleanor Leffue, of Boones Mill; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Ashley was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Olivia May Garraghty; his brothers, Reginald, Calvin and Giles Garraghty; and his nephew, Gary Sowder. Ashley was born on a farm, but he discovered very early that he was not destined for a life on the farm. As a teenager Ashley was afflicted with polio, an illness that came to serve as a metaphor of his life - an obstacle to overcome. All who knew Ashley knew a man who was doggedly determined to overcome all of life's obstacles, and all would agree that his determination did indeed allow him to prevail against all odds for many years. Ashley was proud of the 36 years he spent working for Hodges Lumber Corporation, where he began as an accountant. He retired from Hodges in 1982 as vice president and general manager. He then embarked on his second career as a skilled artisan widely known for his custom picture framing business on Bonsack Road. Ashley ran that business, Tagline Specialties, for 25 years, and most would agree that those were the happiest years of his life, as he was able to bring joy to so many people doing something he dearly loved. There is no doubt that he would have stayed at it even longer, but the consequences of his early bout with polio eventually rendered him physically incapable of continuing. That turned out to be the one obstacle that even he could not overcome. Fortunately he had his beloved wife, Betty, and his faith in God to help him through his final years. Ashley joined Calvary Baptist Church in 1947 and continued as an active member until his death. Over the years, he served the church in many capacities. His love for Calvary was deep and abiding, and he was always deeply disappointed when his growing infirmities prevented him from attending Sunday services. Ashley's final wish was that donations be made in his honor to the Calvary Baptist Church Foundation in lieu of flowers. Visitation with be at from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, at Oakley Funeral Home North. Appropriately enough, the funeral service will be held on All Saint's Day, Nov. 1, 2010, at noon at the Oakley Chapel, with the Rev. Donna Hopkins Britt of Calvary Baptist Church presiding. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.
