During his college years, he was active as a performing songwriter, playing evening and weekend gigs with a music partner. He also enjoyed choir, frat life, acting, and organizing an underground newspaper. David graduated with majors in English and Communication Arts. In the late 1980's, David and Leslie relocated to the Washington, D.C., area where David worked for the United States government in satellite imagery analysis. His career evolved to training and then program management with numerous software subcontractors, ending with employment with Eastman Software in Massachusetts., Their daughter, Kelcey, was born in 1992, and son, Cameron, in 1994., The day prior to moving to the Boston area, in July of 1996, David was diagnosed with brain cancer - Glioblastoma Multiforme IV (GBM). He was expected to have fewer than two years to live. Eager to have his life make a difference in the lives of others, he gave up his career in the software industry and, with a great leap of faith, launched a third career as a performing songwriter - a "troubadour of hope." Following two surgeries, radiation, experimental chemotherapy and nuclear therapy, David criss-crossed America (and Europe) singing in coffee houses and churches, for cancer conferences and cancer survivor groups for 12 years. David wrote all of his own songs, which grew out of his experiences of war and of battling a deadly cancer. He sang of faith, hope, love, and of living life to it's fullest each day. He experienced a recurrence of brain cancer in late 2008, recovering enough to tour in 2009 and early 2010. Enduring numerous additional surgeries and difficult treatments, David made a final tour in July of this year., David is survived by Leslie, his wife of 23 years; his children, Kelcey and Cameron; his parents, Kenneth and Ethel Bailey; a sister, Sara Makari and her husband, Victor; numerous sisters- and brothers-in-law and eight nieces and nephews., To quote a line from one of David's songs, "The tears of the angels form a river where you can wash your pain, and even in the middle of the thunder, don't forget the love inside the rain." His theme was "There may be years of tears behind you, but right now you've got One More Day." He leaves behind him a musical legacy of 23 professionally-recorded CDs. His music and his personal testimony have affected the lives of countless thousands in this country and around the world., The family offers deep gratitude to Doctor Henry Friedman, Doctor Allan Friedman and Doctor David Reardon at Duke and Doctor David Schiff at University of Virginia Medical Center and their caring staffs. We also offer loving thanks to our family of caregivers at the Hospice House and Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville., Memorial gifts are welcome and may be made to Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church, 6566 Spring Hill Road, Ruckersville, VA 22968. Half of those gifts will be equally divided between the following brain tumor organizations, The American Brain Tumor Association, the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, Gray Matters Foundation, the Florida Brain Tumor Association and T.H.E. Brain Trust.

Dr. Velta Haas

Dr. Velta Haas, 88, died on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at the home of her daughter, Kristina Haas Lawwill, at Peavine Hollow Farm in Free Union, Virginia. Since her Alzheimer's diagnosis several years ago, Velta lived with her daughter, Kristina; and also her daughter, Anna Haas Wadsworth, in Charlotte, North Carolina., As a high school student, Velta's favorite subject was geography, which she studied intensely. She realized her life's dream to travel the world through her work as ship's doctor on the USNS General Sturgis. Velta met her future husband, Henry E. Haas, onboard ship and their courtship spanned several continents as they worked and sailed together. One of their early dates was in Sydney, Australia, where they danced their first waltz. In 1950, Velta and Henry ultimately settled in New York, where she remained until her move to Scottsville, Virginia, in 1977., Henry shared her passion for travel, and prior to his death in 1968, had sailed to all seven continents. In the 1950s and 1960's, he participated in four historic Operation Deep Freeze exploration missions to Antarctica., Velta's life, as well as those of her fellow Latvians, was indelibly defined by the Russian occupation of Latvia in World War II. Many were forced to flee their native country in order to find refuge and freedom elsewhere, having to leave behind their land, homes, and possessions. As such, Velta always impressed the value of education, travel, and reading upon her children and others in her life. She often stressed that education is one of the few things that can never be taken away. She also felt strongly that people should be exposed to travel while they were still young, so that it would help to shape and define who they would ultimately become., Velta received her medical degree in 1945 from the University of Innsbruck in Innsbruck, Austria. In New York, she also earned a master's degree in German from Hofstra University in 1968. In 1978, together with friend and former neighbor Kathy Coleman, Velta founded Scott's Landing Pre-school in Scottsville, Virginia, which was based on the Montessori method and is still in operation today. She considered this pre-school to be her greatest life's accomplishment., She was born to Colonel Jekabs and Kristina Alberts Dombrovskis on November 10, 1921, in Jelgava, Latvia. Kristina died only nine days after having given birth to Velta and her twin sister, Aina. Her father died in 1949 and her stepmother, Lizette Dombrovskis, died in 1979. She was also predeceased by her sisters Doctor Laimdota Dombrovskis in Ohio, Daina Dombrovskis in Virginia, and Ilga Banga in Latvia. Her only brother, Olgerts Dombrovskis, was taken by the Russian army from the high school he was attending when he was sixteen; his whereabouts are still unknown., She is survived by her three children, Kristina Haas Lawwill and her husband, Larry, of Free Union, Virginia, Anna Haas Wadsworth and her husband, Paul, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Philip Henry Haas of Waynesboro, Virginia; and four grandchildren, Elizabeth Lawwill of Free Union, Virginia, Alexandra Lawwill of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Alison Wadsworth and Jonathan Wadsworth, both of Charlotte, North Carolina. She is also survived by her twin sister, Aina Garsils and her husband, Armands, of Babylon, New York., Velta will be buried alongside her husband at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York. The family will hold a private memorial graveside service to celebrate her life., In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Charlottesville Free Clinic at 1138 Rose Hill Drive Charlottesville, VA 22903 or to the , Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.

Johnny had just finished teaching Rachel how to drive the E-Z-Go. He made sure that everyone knew Rachel was one of the sweetest gifts he was ever given. Richard Allen Gilbert

Richard Allen Gilbert Richard Allen Gilbert went to be with the Lord October 5, 2010, at the age of 52. He was better known as: Gibby, Ricky, Rick, Daddy Rick, and many other variations. He was an avid member of the Boy Scouts of America and devoted many years to Troop 18. He was known for his relentless compassion for others, love of the outdoors, and most importantly his quirky sense of humor. His Christian life began at a very young age, and throughout his life his testimony of love, hope, compassion, and forgiveness provided a passageway for many others who needed guidance along their path in life. His favorite verse was: "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." Isaiah 40:31. His life on earth provides a legacy to many, and knowing he is soaring above us and watching over us should provide comfort to all. Preceding him in death were his parents, Mary Reed and Larry Gilbert; and grandparents, Irene Doran and Hatcher Doran. Surviving him are his wife of 30 years, Rebekah Gilbert; daughter, Rachel Myers and husband, Clint; son, Will Gilbert and wife, Kaitlin; brother, Scott Gilbert and wife, Janie; sister, Kathy Gilbert, all of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews, several cousins, many beloved friends, and best friend and companion, Ralphie. In keeping with his devotion to the love and happiness of others, always remember this simple yet powerful truth: " Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 Please visit

Thomas E. Musser

Thomas E. Musser Thomas Edward "Mr. Strong" Musser of Rural Retreat passed into Heaven on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at 2:38 p.m. at in Memphis, Tenn. He was held by his parents and surrounded by the loving staff of the hospital. Funeral service will be held Sunday, Oct. 10, at 3 p.m. at Cedar Bluff Baptist Church in Atkins with the Rev. Eddie Beck officiating. Interment will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion. He was born Aug. 8, 2001, and at the age of 3 ½ was diagnosed with leukemia. He fought hard and never complained. He enjoyed life to the fullest and was a testament to us all about hope, love and joy. He loved his family and friends. He loved school when he could attend. He loved baseball. He always said without a doubt in the world he was going to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates when he grew up. He loved swimming and playing with his dogs. He loved playing with his brothers. They were his lifeline. His spirit and courage touched the lives of everyone he knew. His smile and wonderful hugs warmed the hearts of all he touched. His absence leaves a vast hole in our hearts. To summarize his life with words would be impossible. The closest words that come to mind are trust. He trusted God, his family and the doctors. And love, a pure love for family, friends and life that sickness could not break, pain could not shake and death cannot take away. In the midst of our sorrow, we take comfort in the words of King David at the death of his son, that we will go to him one day. Thomas is survived by his parents, Ed and Lisa Musser and his brothers, Matthew and Andrew, all of Rural Retreat; his grandparents, Rector and Linda Currin of Sugar Grove and Mike and Carol Musser of Rural Retreat; his Aunt Robin Musser of Abingdon, Uncle Mick and Aunt Melissa Musser and cousins, Garret, Abby and Ben, all of Rural Retreat; and Uncle John and Aunt Nancy Currin and cousins, Brian and Katie, all of Blacksburg. Over the years of his treatment at, , we grew close to many people we consider our family. The staff at the hospital cared for him as if he were their own. Thomas and our family have a special love for them all, including Ching-Hon Pui, M.D., his primary leukemia doctor; and Wing H. Leung, M.D., his bone marrow transplant doctor. In addition, we grew to adore and love many of the nurse practitioners, physicians' assistants, nurses and staff. There are too many to list. We are thankful for the many additional years they gave us with Thomas. Instead of flowers, donations may be made in Thomas' honor to, or you can consider becoming a partner in Hope for the hospital.
