Bret L. Falde VIRGINIA BEACH - Bret Lyle Falde passed June 2, 2010 in Orlando, Fla. The eagle took flight onto a greater place. Bret was born Jan. 5, 1967 in Mountain View, Calif. He was a graduate of Green Run High School 1985 and the Norfolk Naval Ship Yard Apprentice School. He was employed with Proctor & Gamble. Bret was predeceased by his father, Larry B. Falde Sr. He is survived by his mother, Penny Falde of Virginia Beach; brother, Larry Falde of Orlando; sisters and their spouses, Sherry and Les White, LaFawn and Mike Elliott, all of Virginia Beach; nieces and nephews, Michael Brite, Renee Galloway, Ashley Brite, Bree Elliott, Tony Elliott of Virginia Beach, Shailah Falde of Orlando, and partner, Steve Paradis of Orlando. Bret overcame many obstacles and challenges in his life. His two-year battle with cancer was fought with relentless courage and remarkable strength. We miss his playful sense of humor, gruffness, and unwavering spirit. Charles Lawrence Govsky Charles Lawrence Govsky, age 81, of Gainesville, Va., died at his home on October 18, 2010. Charles was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on August 23, 1929, to the late John and Mabel Govsky. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force. His wife of 40 years, Ruth McGuigan Govsky, died in 1991. Charles is survived by his wife, Joy Govsky, whom he married in 1996, two daughters, Margie Ray (Allen) of Atlanta, Ga., Joanne Woodward (Sam) of Bristow, Va., a son, Larry Govsky (Debbie) of Rockville, Md., step-sons Kevin Colliton (Sue) and Brian Colliton (Dawn) of Salisbury, Md., Mark Colliton (Jacquie) of St. Petersburg, Fla., Sean Colliton (Lisa) of Poolesville, Md., Gavin Colliton (Patti) of Lexington, Va., and brother, Jack Govsky of Mt. Laurel, N.J. Charles is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, one great grandchild and many nieces and nephews., Charles retired from IBMs Federal Systems Division in 1987 after 32 years. He was also a well known square dance caller in the MD/VA area for over 20 years. Charles was a past Grand Knight of Ascension Council #9285, Knights of Columbus, and was a Knight for over 50 years. He was also a member of Bishop Flaherty 4th Degree Assembly #1678, Manassas, Va. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church serving as Eucharist Minister for many years. O'Donnell and Georgie Hinkins O'Donnell. She was a member of Clover Bottom Baptist Church and a retired employee of General Electric. She is survived by a son, Wayne DeJarnette of Nathalie; a son-in-law, Emmitt (Pop) Mason of Brookneal; two grandchildren, L. H. Mason and fianc‚e Hope of Nathalie, Cathy L. Mason of Nathalie; four great-grandchildren, Colton, Alyssa, Alex and Mason. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Anne Mason. He lived with Linda and Andy for the last three years, but formerly resided in Mill Hall, Pa., and Albuquerque, N.M. Mr. Fowler was born in Howard, Pa., on November 14, 1924 to Clara B. (Leitch) and James Q. Fowler. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Thelma (Strouse) Bowers of Mill Hall, Pa.; his second wife, Lee Ripka Williams; and stepson, Bill Williams. He is survived by five daughters, Janet and Dallas Decker of Boalsburg, Pa., Linda and Andy Young of Richmond, Va., Shirley and James Gray of Waynesboro, Ga., Glenda Feidler of Beech Creek, Pa., and Celia and Joe Fagnani of Altoona, Pa.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and three stepsons, Richard Williams, Ronald Williams and Edward William, all residing in Lamar, Pa. Gerry was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 1570th Engineering Heavy Shop Company and the 562nd Engineering Boat Maintenance Battalion. He received the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. He was the proud owner of "Henrietta" (an original military Jeep) that he exhibited in parades and veteran events in New Mexico and Pennsylvania. His accomplishments by far exceeded what one might expect for having only a ninth grade education. Gerry was a respected and skilled lab technician in the Osmond Laboratory in Penn State University's physics department for 20 years. Retirement from Penn State lead him to Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, where he retired again in 1994. Professional accomplishments included "Department 1110 Technical Excellence Award" from Sandia National Laboratories in May 1990 and American Vacuum Society, New Mexico Chapter for outstanding lifetime contributions to vacuum science and technology in April 1994. He was a charter member of New Mexico Military Vehicle Preservation Association - Roadrunner Convoy in Albuquerque. Gerald L. Smithwick BELHAVEN - Gerald Lee Smithwick, 79, of the 38900 block of U.S. Hwy. 264, East, the Ponzer Community, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010 at his home. Gerald was born June 3, 1931 in Ponzer, Hyde County, son of the late Harold and Margaret Carver Smithwick. Gerald was married for 53 years to Norma Everton Smithwick until her death in March 2004. Gerald is survived by a daughter, Denise Smithwick of Indianapolis; two sons of the Ponzer Community, Macon Smithwick and wife Sherry and Gilbert Smithwick and wife Cindy; five grandchildren, Macon Smithwick Jr. currently serving in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan, Ashton Gibbs, Gerald Smithwick III, Kyle Smithwick and Tess Smithwick; three great-grandsons, Bryson Gibbs, Tyler and Robert Smithwick. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, William T. Smithwick and Doran Smithwick; a sister, Amy Lou Deese. Gerald served three years in the U.S. Army including a year in Korea with a tank battalion during the war where he attained the rank of master sergeant at the age of 20. After he was discharged from the Army, he and his wife Norma lived in her hometown of Norfolk where their four children were born before relocating to Ponzer in 1965. They ran a country store for a number of years. Gerald was an accomplished welder, and then became a successful commercial fisherman. After retiring from that, he opened a small bait business, which he ran until recently from a shop outside his home. He very much enjoyed meeting and visiting with fishermen from all over the country. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Mount Olive Church of Christ Cemetery in Ponzer. He retired again and went into private consult-ing in 2000 for the next 4 years., Jack and family lived in Dale City for 23 yrs. before moving to Stafford in 2000 for the past 10 yrs., Jack was a member of the American Legion as well as a longtime volunteer at the Chester Pulver, Post 1503 in Dale City where he helped out in supporting their many community activities., Jack very much enjoyed travel, casinos, playing chess, pinochole, poker at Carlos O'Kelly lunch at Ruby Tuesday's and karaoke at King St. Blues., He was also an avid Redskin fan and enjoyed an occasional martini as well as crabbing in Maryland., Jack will be missed by his family and friends but we all know he is now happy again to be with his wife, Carollyn whom he missed terribly. She bowled in the Monday Night Church League and the Thursday Night Ladies League. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her great-grandchildren, Bayleigh and Ryleigh Shaffer. Kathie Meek VIRGINIA BEACH - Kathie Van Den Brink Meek, 54, passed away suddenly at her home in Virginia Beach, Oct. 19, 2010. Kathie was born Jan. 15, 1956 in Allegan, Mich., to Alvin and Betty Van Den Brink of Fennville, Mich. Her parents survive her. Kathie graduated from Fennville High School in 1974 and from Central Michigan University in 1979 with a B.S. in elementary education. She also earned a master's degree in public administration (MPA) from the University of Oklahoma in 1993. Kathie married Thomas Paul Meek of Clare, Mich., Aug. 29, 1981. They have two children, Tong Paul Meek, 19, and Moira Hui Meek, 15, both of whom were adopted in China during the mid-1990s. Other surviving family members include brothers, Warren Van Den Brink and Jerry Van Den Brink; and sisters, Millie Van Den Brink, Lois (Mark) Corsaut and Jan (Allen) Sal. She is also survived by her father and mother-in-law, Forrest and Jean Meek of Clare, Mich., as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Kathie was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clare. Kathie and Tom were a Navy couple. Tom joined the Navy shortly after their marriage in 1981 and he remains on active duty. Kathie and Tom lived in countries around the world, including Japan, Italy, Germany and Bahrain, and numerous other duty stations throughout the United States along both coasts as well as Hawaii. The greater Washington, D.C., area was like a second home to Kathie, having spent many years there during Tom's various assignments. Kathie's own professional career included elementary and middle school teaching positions in Michigan, management of military child care facilities and activities, both overseas and stateside, facilities management at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C., community liaison officer duties at the American Embassy in Bonn, Germany, and volunteer duty at the VA Hospital in Miami. Kathie also volunteered significant time in parenting activities like Brownie Scouts, organizing and fundraising for Moira's soccer teams, and Team Mother during Tong's wrestling years. Tom felt the most important position Kathie ever held was stay-at-home Mom, which she enjoyed immensely for most of the past decade. Kathie was a generous giver to causes supporting mistreated and abandoned animals as well as environmental protection. The Norfolk Chapter of the SPCA and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation were two organizations of importance to her and they would be appropriate recipients for memorial donations in Kathie's honor. A beloved mother and wife, Kathie leaves behind a bereaved family and countless friends from a life of devotion and service to others. She is profoundly missed. She was the granddaughter of George and Irene Feight of Everett, Pa., who preceded her in death. She is survived by her loving husband, Donnie Angel of Grafton, Va.; stepdaughter, Staci Angel of Northern Virginia; brothers, William P. Feight and wife, Kim, of Charlottesville, Va., and Douglas G. Feight and wife, Jill, of Emerald Isle, N.C.; brother-in-law, Ralph Angel Jr. and wife, Debbie, of Hampton, Va.; sister-in-law, Patricia Logan and husband, Dan, of Oregon; nephew, Ronnie Logan and wife, Kim, of Oregon. She is also survived by nephews, Spencer Feight, Jonah Feight and Bryan Angel; nieces, Tyler Feight, Sarah Angel and Heather Logan of New York; her loving mother-in-law, Ms. Carolyn Angel of Grafton, Va.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Melinda graduated from Penn State University in 1984, receiving a B.S. degree in microbiology. She was a dedicated employee of Anheuser-Busch in Williamsburg, Va., for over 25 years as a microbiologist and later as an area manager. Melinda was a member of the Newport News Elks Lodge #315, serving as chairperson for Veterans Affairs Volunteer Service for the Southeast District of Virginia. Melinda had a great passion for our veterans, and she won State recognition for her volunteer work for disabled veterans at the Hampton VA Hospital in Hampton, Va. One of Melinda's favorite pastimes was spending time on the Chowan River in North Carolina, where she loved to reel in the largemouth bass. Melinda was a very caring person and she will be sadly missed by all. A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, October 23, 2010, in the chapel of Amory Funeral Home, 410 Grafton Drive, Grafton, Va. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Phyllis really enjoyed her flower gardens at her home. Phyllis is survived by her husband, Marshall; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Greg and Dianna McGann; her special cousin, Pat Goff, who was more like a sister to her ; several nieces and nephews. Robert Harding Reid CHESAPEAKE - Robert Harding Reid of Georgetown Boulevard was peacefully called home to eternal rest Oct. 20, 2010. He was born May 16, 1921 to the late Estelle Reid Bray in Norfolk. He was predeceased by his wife, Alice Reid. Robert was a graduate of Union Kempsville High School, Virginia Beach, and attended Virginia State College. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a merchant seaman for 34 years and retired in 1980. He is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Samuel Graham Hambrick MARION, Va. Samuel Graham Hambrick, age 65, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010, in Marion. The world of natural beauty and the community of people were both extremely important to Sam, which he showed through dedicated public service of 38 years in the public school system of Smyth County as principal of Adwolfe, Chilhowie Elementary and Sugar Grove Combined Schools. His love for his community was further expressed by extensive volunteer service including Smyth County School Board member, Smyth County Tourism Board the Bonham House, former board member of Big Brothers, Big Sisters, active member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Marion Morning, and 20 years as chairperson of the Naturalist Rally on Whitetop. Many of his friends knew him best as an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. Sam graduated from Virginia High School and earned a B.A. degree from Emory & Henry where he became and remained an active member of Beta Lambda Zeta Fraternity. He received his masters in education from the University of Virginia. Sam was the proud parent of five children and husband of Catherine Hook Hambrick of Marion; three daughters, Ann Hambrick Shannon and husband, James Stephen Shannon of St. Louis, Mo., Elizabeth Page Hambrick and Chaney Carmichael Hambrick, both of Marion; two sons, Matthew Graham Hambrick and wife, Elizabeth Nelson Hambrick of Homer, Alaska, and David Zachary Hambrick of Lansing, Mich.; one sister, Betsy Hambrick Belew and husband, Sam Belew of Bristol Tennessee; three brothers-in-law, Tom Hook and wife, Susan of Phoenix, William Page Hook of Boulder, Colo., and David Hook and wife, Chris of Richmond, Va.; two grandchildren, Christopher Ryan Shannon and Samuel Martin Hambrick; two nieces, Beth D. Sayles and his wife Brenda of Portland, Ore., Jean E. Merkel and her husband Norman Vandervelde of Fort Collins, Colo., and Lynn A. Alexander and her husband Nicholas of Norfolk; and 11 great-grandchildren. Edith was a devoted wife and mother, providing a loving home wherever Army orders directed: Leavenworth, Kan., Panama Canal Zone, El Paso, Texas, Lawton, Okla., Paris, France, Chicago, and back home in St. Louis. Her interests were many: the Empty-Nesters of Southminster Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, bowling, sewing, volunteer work, knitting, crocheting, gardening, crossword puzzles, card games, bingo, and especially Rummikub. Mother's last years were difficult, and she will be remembered for her positive spirit as she bravely endured the frailties of aging. We rejoice, knowing Mom has been freed from her pain. She is also survived by her precious grandchildren, that called her "MAW-MAW", Sarah, Rachel, Jared, Nicole, Shannon, Brandon, Alex, Megan; and two very special great-grandchildren, Michael and Jacob. Shirley was born in Manhattan, N.Y., on March 15, 1931, to the late Alena Sarah Ward and William Ward, and entered eternal rest on Oct. 14, 2010. She was the middle child of nine children, Margaret Watson, Jurah Ward, Virginia Wright, Waheedah Mustafa, Mildred Ward, William Ward, and Florence Maynard. Her gentle heart was known by all who knew her, she loved her family., She was educated in New York City Public Schools, and attended Brooklyn College. Shirley worked as an administrative assistant most of her life. She also worked as a mentor and counselor for the Urban League., While residing in New York, she attended the Riverside Church where she accepted Jesus Christ as her Saviour. She served on the Executive Board of the Riverside Church Tower League., During the latter part of her life she decided to join her daughters and grandchildren in Virginia, where she became a member of St. Pails Baptist Church. William T. Walker Sr. NORFOLK - Early Tuesday morning Oct. 19, 2010, the Lord called to eternal rest our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Mr. William T. Walker Sr., from Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center at 3 a.m. The Lord blessed him to see 89 glorious years. Mr. Walker was a native of Princess Anne County and the son of the late Sandy and Leila Walker. He was a member of Deep Creek Church of Christ for many years and served on many boards. He served in the United States Army as a sergeant during World War II. While in the service, he met and married the late Mary Bell Chisel Walker, and of this union four loving children were born. Mr. Walker worked for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 35 years. He retired and began spending his time enjoying his grandchildren. He was a likeable person and loved by his family and friends. He leaves behind to cherish his memory one daughter, Patricia M. Freeman (Sylvester); three sons, William T. Walker Jr. (Carolyn), Larry R. Walker, and Jeffrey G. Walker; one sister, Receil Reynolds (Harvey); 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
