She was the loving wife of Kurt Murphy and the mother of Andre T. Murphy. She is also survived by her parents, Bobby and Freddie Johnson; her siblings: one sister, Teressa J. Barnes (Andrew) and four brothers, Cheyenne M. Johnson (Cynthia), Bobby A. Johnson (Toya), Keith C. Johnson (Ethelene), Alonzo L. Alice Ovsen Kibble PORTSMOUTH - Alice Ovsen Kibble, 90, passed away Oct. 19, 2010. Mrs. Kibble was the former owner/operator of Alice Salon of Beauty and Alice Jr. Salon of Beauty, both in Portsmouth, and retired after 30 years of service. She was the widow of Martin M. Oct 20, 2010 Alpha Mae Handy, 99, of Stuart, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010, at her home. She was born Nov. 26, 1910, in Greensboro, N.C., to Walter G. and Virginia Pulliam Marshall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Ray Handy; a brother, George Marshall; and three sisters, Willie Smith, Addie Haymore and Myrtle Weaver. She retired from J.P. Stevens, and she was the mother of Abiding Grace Pentecostal Holiness Church. Surviving are nieces and nephews. Andrew B. Crabtree Andrew Bane Crabtree, 93, of Ceres died Friday, Oct. 15, 2010. Funeral service was held Sunday, Oct. 17, at 4 p.m. at the Bland Funeral Chapel. Interment was in the Sharon Lutheran Cemetery. He was born Aug. 3, 1917, in Ceres, son of the late Estel Peter and Hattie Jane Tilson Crabtree. He was a member of Sharon Lutheran Church and the Ceres Alumni Association. He was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a good neighbor, helping many in the community. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Oliver Crabtree; a son-in-law, Mike Pruitt; three sisters, Bonnie Boothe, Marie Groseclose and Dorothy Riel; and two brothers, Howard Crabtree and infant J.R. Crabtree. Survivors include a daughter, Iris C. Speller CHESAPEAKE - During the early morning hours of Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, the Angel of Silence took our beloved wife, daughter, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, Barbara Jean Ray Speller. Mrs. Speller was born in Portsmouth Sept. 20, 1947, the daughter of Bernice Spellman and the late Allie Ray. Mrs. Speller was reared by her father, the late Ernest Spellman. Mrs. Speller was educated in the Chesapeake public school system. She was employed with the Norfolk Naval Supply Center for 17 years. In 1987, she was employed with the Norfolk Ford Assembly Plant where she retired after 20 years of service. Mrs. Speller leaves to cherish her memory, her loving and devoted husband, Roosevelt Speller; mother, Bernice Spellman; children, Antionnette Jamison, Jarocka Jamison and Andrew Jamison(Tracy) and Ronnie Speller; grandchildren, Jade, Christopher, Jarocka, Justin, Jashad and Jevon; great-grandchildren, Jaishon and Kayla. Born July 29, 1949, in San Antonio, Texas, he was the son of the late Harold Daniel and Margaret Brinegar Long Stanley. Mr. Long was a machinist with B&W with more than 30 years of service and was a member of First Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Jason D. Long, and wife, Christina; one daughter, Nicole R. Long, both of Lynchburg; three sisters, Cynthia Scott and husband, Marvin, of Birmingham, Ala., Rita Ragland and husband, Barry, of Rustburg, and Sue George and husband, Tommy, of Lynchburg; three brothers, Rodney Long and wife, Valerie, of Asheville, N.C., Bryan Long of Rocky Mount, and Loren Long and wife, Jane, of Franklin, N.C.; two grandchildren, Laurel Stephenson and Shannon Stephenson; his mother-in-law, Louise Reynolds, of Altavista; and his step-father, Pat Stanley, of Lynchburg. BROWN, David R., 60, a native of Richmond and resident of Chester for about 30 years, passed away Sunday, October 17, 2010 with family by his side. David attended V.P.I. and was a member of their Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity. He retired from the Department of Defense at Ft. Lee after 25 years of service as an Information System Specialist. David was responsible for IBM mainframe operations as a systems programmer for a logistical simulation to support commanders and their staffs for training prior to deployment. John Drew Godsey John D. Godsey, Th.D, 88, professor emeritus of Wesley Theological Seminary and a renowned scholar of German theologian and martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer, died Oct. 12, at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, Md. He died of cardiac arrest. Born in Bristol on Oct. 10, 1922, Dr. Godsey was the son of William Clinton and Mary Lynn Corns Godsey. He attended Tennessee High School 1936-38 and then spent the last two years at the McCallie School in Chattanooga, graduating in 1940. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and received his B.S. degree in 1947, following a stint as an officer in the U.S. Army from 1943-46. Dr. Godsey earned a B.D. degree magna cum laude in 1953 from Drew University Theological School, during which time he was awarded both the Morrow Memorial Scholarship and the Delaplaine McDaniel Fellowship. He earned his doctorate in theology insigni cum laude in 1960 from the University of Basel, Switzerland, where he was a prot‚g‚ of Swiss theologian Karl Barth, one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. Dr. Godsey's published dissertation, The Theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, was the first comprehensive study of Bonhoeffer in any language. DUGGINS, Katherine Whitehead, age 93, of Richmond, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2010. She was born April 1, 1917 in Courtland, Va., to Henry Luther Whitehead and Fannie Applewhite Whitehead. Her parents; and sisters, Bessie, Blanch and Frances preceded her in death. She leaves one son, Manfred Wyatt Duggins and his wife, Lockie; numerous nieces and nephews and their children, all of whom she loved dearly. After graduating high school, Kate moved to Richmond as a young woman and worked for General Foods, Thalhimers & Woolworth's before she embarked on a career at Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company that spanned more than 25 years. Upon retirement she obtained her real estate license and joined New Horizons Realty for a short period of time. Kate was so active and full of life; she couldn't just remain retired so at age 67 she started another career as office manager in The Byrd Center Leasing Office where she remained until age 87. As a lifelong active Methodist, Kate was a charter member of Walmsley Boulevard United Methodist Church and more recently was an active member and volunteer at Ramsey Memorial United Methodist Church. She always sought to help people and her volunteer endeavors were a testament to her commitment. Her many years of service included 25 years volunteering at Chippenham Hospital, also for the Richmond Senior Center and United Methodist Family Services. For over 30 years, Kate could be seen working at the polls at her neighborhood-voting precinct on Election Day. The family is grateful for the loving care extended by the staff of the Hospice Unit at Retreat Doctors' Hospital. She was born on October 27, 1931 in Sendai, Japan, one out of five children of Morigi Chiba and Enayo Yamashita., Kiko worked on a military base in Japan, where she met and married US soldier Willie Brown. Leaman Melvin Carroll Leaman, 56, died on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at his home in Marion. He was born in Washington, D.C., to the late James Carroll Leaman and Lorraine Jones Leaman. He grew up in the Marlowe Heights area of Maryland where he attended the Ben Franklin School of Accounting. He moved to Marion in the mid-1970's and went to work for Appalachian Power Company. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Marion where he sang in the choir and served on the Men's Vestry. He was a former chairman for the Smyth County Democrat Party, an aide for Delegate John H. Tate in the Virginia House of Delegates and served on the Marion Town Council for the past 16 years. He was the director of the Smyth County Free Clinic for the past nine years. He served on various boards, civic organizations and coached in the Marion Recreational Department for several years. Ruth Hammond VIRGINIA BEACH - On Sunday morning, Oct. 17, 2010, her Lord and Savior called Garnett Ruth C. Hammond, born July 27, 1938, home to be with Him. For two years she had been fighting and battling her fourth cancer. She spent the last two years bedridden in her home. During the whole time, not once did she lose faith, and remained in high spirits and strong willed. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Orville L. Hammond; her children, Woodrow McFaden, Wayne Hammond, Keith Hammond, Diana Fish, and Denise Faye Harmon; stepchildren, Beth Marshall, Cathey Hammond, Earnie Hammond, and Debbie Latta; 18 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, four sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was born in North Carolina and was raised in Norfolk, and lived the rest of her life in Virginia Beach. She was predeceased by her stepfather and mother, Bural and Ruth Allen; a sister, Gale and two nieces, Cindy and Sharron. She was a member of 14 years at Faith Temple Church in Norfolk. She was employed by Anchor Canteen and worked in the cafe at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk for 22 years. She was not just a cashier but was considered a legend. She never once missed a day of work, no matter how sick she was. She felt blessed and honored to work at a job and with many people she dearly loved. She dedicated a lot of her time to cancer charities and benefits for cancer research, such as Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. She was very courageous and strong willed. She was a great inspiration to many people who were fighting to overcome there battle with cancer. The viewing will be held Thursday, Oct. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 East Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23502. The funeral will be Friday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Garden. The family will be hosting friends and family after the service at Faith Temple Church, 1173 George St., (stoplight diagonal from the funeral home), Norfolk. The church will be providing food and drinks. A donation has been set up by numerous people in honor of Ruth Hammond to help with medical and funeral costs. Sam Lorenzo Callis SUFFOLK - Sam Lorenzo Callis, 92, of the 3600 block of Sleepy Hole Road passed away Monday, Oct. 18, 2010. He was born Sept. 6, 1918 in Vance County, North Carolina to the late Samuel A. and Cora Meadows Callis. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Jessie Hoggard Callis; four brothers, Maynard, Alvin, Elton and Cecil Callis; and three sisters, Lorraine Hayes, Frances Eure and Alice Clark. He was a resident and farmer in Suffolk for many years. Some of the residents in Suffolk remember the times he often stood before the city council. If he disagreed with them, and often did, he would be the first one to say so. Sam was a member of the Suffolk Moose Lodge 141, the Ruritan Club and a life member of Woodman of the World. He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1972 as a welder. He also worked for Atlantic Wood Industries and retired from the Department of Transportation as a bridge tender. Sam is survived by four sons, Whitlow W. Callis and wife Sue of Willard, N.C., William H. Callis and wife Brenda of Chesapeake, Fred W. Callis and wife Eva of Suffolk, and George S. Callis and wife Susan of Suffolk; eight grandchildren, Ann Florian, Tammy Branscome, Billy Callis Jr., Stephan Callis, Fred Junior Callis, Michael Callis, Angela Callis and Lori Callis; and 10 great-grandchildren. A special thank you goes to Eva Callis for the love and care she has given to Sam for many years and to the staff of Consulate Healthcare of Windsor for their care. Sandra Keen Culbertson Sandra Keen Culbertson, 64, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, in the Virginia Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg. She had been in declining health for the past 20 years. Born Sept. 2, 1946, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Paul Leonard Keen and Josephine Wilmouth Keen. Before her illness, she was employed as a nurse. She was married to Eddie L. Culbertson, who survives. Viola Lucille Frazier, Viola Lucille Bruce Frazier, 87, passed on to her heavenly home on Tuesday, October 19, 2010, at Mountain View Nursing Home., She was born on February 27, 1923, in Mission Home, Virginia, to the late Raymond and Lillie Bruce. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Allen Frazier, formerly of Crozet; three brothers, Claude, Kenneth Leroy and Raymond Bruce; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth and Gladys Jean; and one brother-in-law, Jesse James Frazier., She is survived by her daughter, Linda Jean Shiflett and her husband, Clyde, of Ruckersville; three grandsons, Dwayne Shiflett and his wife; Stephanie; of Stanardsville, Gerald Shiflett of Free Union and Shannon Shiflett of Charlottesville; five great- grandchildren, Dalton, Lindsey, Cheyenne, Lawren and Jonmorgan; four sisters- in-law which she loved very much, Hattie Coleman, Ruby Bradford, Viola Jarrell and her husband, Harlis, Janna Lee Bruce; and very special nieces, Joan Shiflett and Theresa Coffey; one brother-in-law, Tommy "Buster" Frazier., Viola loved and devoted her entire life to her family. She was a very special person and will be missed by all., Viola attended Maple Grove Christian Church prior to entering Mountain View Nursing Home where she was extremely happy. BAILEY, Virginia Collawn, 93, of Richmond, passed away Monday, October 18, 2010, widow of Raymond C. Bailey. She was born December 9, 1916 to the late Allen and Daisy Pritchett Collawn, and was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Collawn Lundberg, and a brother, Karl Collawn. She is survived by a daughter, Joy Bailey Mullins and husband, Glenn, of Doswell, Va.; son, David Bailey and wife, Nancy, of McKenny, Va.; grandaughter, Annette Bailey Pike and husband, Vernon, of Tenn.; nephews, Christian Lundberg, Danny, Larry, Karl, Allen, and Dennis Collawn; nieces, Judi Lundberg and Karen Nuckles; and many other relatives and friends. Virginia was a member of Boulevard United Methodist Church and its Fidelity Class, the United Methodist Women; the James River Women's Club; and the Friends Club. She was a Red Cross Volunteer for many years and did volunteer work for numerous other organizations. Wesley E. DeWoody VIRGINIA BEACH - Wesley E. DeWoody passed away Oct. 18, 2010. Born in Charlotte, N.C., he was a military veteran of 34 years. He resided in Florida, Germany, Italy, Syracuse, N.Y., before retiring here in 2004. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sandra; three daughters, Deborah and Donna DeWoody of Florida and Laurie Hart of New York. A beloved husband and father, he will forever remain in our hearts. Whitmel F. Earley Jr. CHESAPEAKE - Whitmel Franklin "Frank" Earley Jr., 89, of the 1000 block of Saint Lawrence Drive, went home to be with the Lord Oct. 17, 2010 in a local hospital. A native of Bertie, N.C., he was the son of the late Adelia Elizabeth Barnard and Whitmel Franklin Earley Sr. He was a mechanical engineer at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth for 37 years. He was a member of Oaklette United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. He enjoyed deer hunting with the Triangle Hunt Club. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific on the destroyer escort USS Lough. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ann M. Harris Earley; two sons, Mark Lawrence Earley and wife Cynthia of Leesburg, Va., and Franklin P. Earley and wife Susan of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren, Matthew Earley of Virginia Beach, Rachael Earley Williamson and husband David of Virginia Beach, Justin Whitmel Earley and wife Lauren of Charlottesville, Va., Mark L. Earley Jr. and wife Mary Alice of Richmond, Va., Mary Catherine Earley of Charlottesville, Franklin Earley and Anne Harris, both of Leesburg; two great-grandchildren, Shea Earley and Henry Williamson, both of Virginia Beach. He was predeceased by his brother, John Pritchard Earley. A funeral will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Oaklette United Methodist Church with the Rev. C. Eugene Meek and the Rev. Thomas L. Suitt William "Bill" Suitt, 68, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, at his home in Marion, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 6, 1942 to Viola Campbell Suitt and the late John D. Suitt. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Davenport Suitt. He was a veteran of the U.S., , Company A, 4th Medical Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, stationed in Fort Lewis Washington from 1960-1963. He was a graduate of Wytheville Community College and retired from Royal Mouldings. He was an avid fisherman and loved golfing with his friends. He was a loving family man who adored his only granddaughter. Survivors include his daughter, Barbara Hall and husband, Ralph, of Atkins; mother, Viola Campbell Suitt of Troutdale; two brothers, John Lee Suitt and wife, Bettie, of Troutdale, and Jack Suitt and wife, Susan, of Milwaukee, Wis.; one granddaughter, Brandi Hall; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Graveside service will be conducted Thursday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. at Corinth Cemetery, Rugby, with the Rev. BOWERS, William Alexander, died October 16, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospital. He was 96 years old. Bill Bowers grew up on a farm in Caroline County and attended Randolph-Macon College. He served in the Army Transportation Corps during World War II. After the war, he held several positions in the office of the RF&P Railroad, retiring as Manager of Records in 1976. He attended Boulevard United Methodist Church, where he held many offices and was known particularly for his work in support of programs for youth. He was also known for his steadfast faith and his readiness to help everyone he met in need. He was a craftsman in wood and an avid golfer for many years. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Evelyn F. Bowers; his daughter, Virginia B. Rowlett and her husband, Russell J. Rowlett; his grandson, Michael T. Rowlett; his younger sister, Maria B. Nelson; and many nieces, nephews, other relations and friends. Graveside services will be held at Westhampton Memorial Park at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 21. A memorial service will be held at the Simms Center, Lakewood Manor, 1900 Lauderdale Drive, at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 12. Arrangements are by Bennett Funeral Home, West Chapel. |

William L. Hanley VIRGINIA BEACH - Cmdr. William L. Hanley, 76, passed Oct. 15, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne; sons, Rob of Virginia Beach and Craig of Hampton; and daughter, Marcia Thrasher and her husband Mac of Chesapeake. He is also survived by a sister, Betty Harrell of Mililani, Hawaii, and six grandchildren. Cmdr. Hanley joined the U.S. Navy in 1954 as a naval aviation cadet and received his Navy wings and officer commission in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1956. He received Bachelor of Science degrees in 1961 from San Jose State College and later from Old Dominion University. He served in various commands in California, Hawaii, Florida, Cuba, and Virginia, where he retired in Aug. 1980. His most memorable career experience was as a member of the Apollo 8 Space Capsule Recovery Team aboard USS Yorktown (CVS-10) in December 1968. There will be a private gathering of family and friends at the family's Lake Gaston home on a date to be decided. Any donations to Cmdr.
