NEWPORT NEWS - Charles T. D'Aiutolo died on April 26, 2010; he was 87 years old. |
Charlie Ray Cleek KINGSPORT, Tenn. Charlie Ray Cleek, 81, was welcomed into the presence of God on Tuesday, April 27, 2010. He was surrounded by his loving wife of 60 years, Alberta Bellamy Cleek; and by his adoring children who had tenderly cared for him at home. The joy bells of Heaven rang! Many whose lives he had touched greeted him as he stood at the feet of Jesus. Praise the Lord! A longtime resident of Sullivan County, Charlie was born and raised in Gate City, Va. At an early age, he learned the trade of carpentry, as well as brick and stone masonry, in order to help support his siblings. Many homes and business in the Kingsport area boast of the beauty and unique style of his craftsmanship. After 35+ years in business, and after teaching his sons the building trade, he retired and turned the business over to his oldest son, Dennis Cleek. Upon his early retirement, he spent nearly 30 years living his simple yet lifelong dreams with his wife. They traveled extensively across the country and were known to be found on many different lakes and rivers that held the "promise of good fishing." His love for God and family always came first, followed by his love for traveling, camping and fishing. Charlie made many wonderful friends in his travels and he "touched" countless lives with his faith, character, humble spirit and wisdom. Not only was he a good fisherman, he was also a "fisher of men." His name is always spoken with love, dignity and respect. He left a wonderful legacy for his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was admired for his joy of life and his uncanny ability to "fix things." Charlie taught Sunday school and served as a deacon for many years. A member of Charity Baptist Church for 17 years, he was instrumental in serving the Lord in several building projects at Charity. He taught his church family how to make apple butter the old-fashioned way and this is still a yearly event as a fund raiser for the youth of Charity Baptist. He was lovingly referred to as "papaw" by young and old alike who loved him dearly. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, John Kelly Cleek and Ollie Mae Catron Cleek; by four brothers, Ernest, Harold, Harry and Don; and by one sister, Clara Hammonds. In addition to his wife, Alberta; surviving are two daughters, Teresa Fillers Fleenor and Peggy Smith and husband, Ivan of Kingsport; three sons, Dennis Cleek and wife, Dawn, Perry Cleek and wife, Debbie, all of Kingsport, and Steven Cleek and wife, Vivian of Knoxville; six grandsons, Jeff Fleenor, Justin Fleenor, Wes Smith, Michael Smith, Matthew Cleek and Chad Cleek; six granddaughters, Angel Light, Jessica Holbrook, Tina Pickel, Amy Ketron, Susan Rice and Torie Kendall; and 24 great-grandchildren, one of which is yet to be born. Charlie was the "hero" of his grandchildren and taught them the importance of honesty and integrity, as well as the fun of making "magic fire" and "biscuits on a stick." All of Charlie grandkids will forever treasure the memories made with "papaw" on many family camping trips. Charlie is also survived by two brothers, Bobby Cleek and Carl Cleek of Gate City; and by two sisters, June Chard and Shirley Bledsoe of Kingsport. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 30, 2010, from 6-8 p.m. at Charity Baptist Church, 3020 Highway 126, Blountville, TN 37617. A memorial service will follow with Charlie's son, Pastor Perry Cleek delivering the "celebration of life" message. Also participating in the service will be Pastor Charles Brooks, and Brother Tom Harper. The music that Charlie loved will be shared by family members and the Charity church family. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010, in East Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Those attending the graveside services are asked to assemble at the graveside by 10:45 a.m. Saturday. Dolores H. Ashman VIRGINIA BEACH - Dolores H. Ashman, known to friends and family as Lorrie, 81, died in Virginia Beach April 26, 2010. A native of Norfolk, she graduated from Maury High School where she was named, "Best All Around," a title she embodied all her life. At Hood College, she excelled and was elected both to serve as president of her class for three years and joined the Mortar Board Honor Society. Lorrie earned a degree in interior design from the New York Institute of Design and worked as an interior designer for Bloomingdales and Stern's. She leaves behind her loving husband of 57 years, Stuart Ashman and three adoring children, William Ashman of Virginia Beach, Catherine Vansant of Thetford, Vt., and Emilie Serratelli of Virginia Beach. Lorrie's children credit her with showing them how to live a truly full and joyful life. Lorrie's talents were many - a skilled painter, sculptor and designer, she created a beautiful home on the Oceanfront that expressed her aesthetic sense. Comfortable wielding large and small tools, she was "master-fixer" and gourmet cook, delighting her family with haute cuisine back when TV dinners were the norm. A fun-loving grandmother, Lorrie leaves behind six grandchildren, Emilie and Henry Vansant of Thetford, Vt., William and Zoe Serratelli of Virginia Beach and Nicholas and Christopher Ashman of Virginia Beach. While there he met Glens Falls native and fellow undergraduate, Mary "Polly" Garrett, the love of his life, and they were married in June 1942. Six months after the Pearl Harbor attack that brought the United States into World War II, Don entered the Army, where his skills with a map led to his assignment to the 949th Engineer Company in the Twentieth Air Force under General Curtis Lemay. His unit, based on the island of Guam in the Southwest Pacific was assigned the task of preparing three-dimensional maps of the Japanese cities that were Lemay's targets. The devastating success of Lemay's B-29s ultimately brought the war to a quicker end while avoiding the need for an even more costly invasion of the Japanese mainland., After the war, Don and Polly settled down in Glens Falls, where Don and his college roommate, Bill McDowell, started a frozen food delivery business. For several years he eked out a living driving through the back roads of the Adirondacks from the wee hours of the morning until after dark, in the process acquiring an appreciation for the region that he never lost., As he and Polly started a family, he brought his marketing skills to Swanson's Frozen Foods, which later merged with the Campbell Soup Company. In the early 1950s, Don and Polly moved several times with their three children from Glens Falls to West Sand Lake, then Omaha, Toronto and Syracuse before settling down for 21 years in Wayne, Pa., while Don worked in the corporate headquarters in Camden, N.J., A devoted father, he encouraged his two sons to enjoy the outdoors through the Boy Scouts, where they both eventually attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He also taught them how to use a camera, which has brought them both great satisfaction over the years. Meanwhile, Don helped foster his daughter's interest in the fine arts, which has been her lifelong passion., Once the three children were grown, Don and Polly moved south to live near their daughter, Anne and husband, Steve Bernard, in Boones Mill, Va., retiring from Campbell Soup in 1981. For many years they enjoyed living on Smith Mountain Lake, where Don was able to pursue his hobbies of sailing, boating and golf while working in the pro shop at Waters Edge Country Club for seven years. In 1995 he helped found the non-denominational Christ Community Church of Penhook, Va., with his friend the Reverend Ed McClain, which flourishes today. In 1997 Don and Polly moved to Boones Mill to be near Anne and Steve, where they lived ever since., In 1999, Don was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and he coped with it as best he could, reading, organizing family archives and walking his two sheltie dogs three times every day. With the dedicated and selfless support of Polly, Anne and Steve, he was able to enjoy his home, dogs and family for the next 11 years., Don was predeceased by his brothers, Harold and Howard Way. Besides his wife, Mary, he is survived by his daughter, Anne Way Bernard and her husband, Steve Bernard, of Boones Mill, Va.; and his two sons, Dr. David Way, of Ithaca, N.Y., and Dr. Daniel Way and his wife, Dr. Harriet Busch, of Glens Falls, N.Y. He was also the proud grandfather of Andrew Way, of Red Hook, N.Y., and Dr. Emily Way, of Charleston, S.C., The Way family would like to thank the staff of the Trinity Mission Health and Rehab of Rocky Mount, where Don lived the last few weeks of his life. They would also like to express their appreciation for Dr. Robert Strong, his primary care physician, who was not only his doctor for many years, but became a friend as well., A memorial celebration of Don's life will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at the Boones Mill Christian Church, 7950 Grassy Hill Road., In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Don's memory can be made to the, online at, , or call 1-800-272-3900, or mailed to, , P.O. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret Lucille Rawls; his brothers, Dr. Charles Rawls and Dr. Japheth Rawls Jr.; his sisters, Ann Newman, Mary Sue Parker, Emmaline Bentley and Marcella Saeker; a stepson, Michael Swider, and the mother of his children, Marie Louise Edgar. Left to cherish his memory are his sister, Margaret Bullard of Mebane, N.C.; his children, the Honorable Deborah L. Rawls of Virginia Beach, Dr. Harvey P. Rawls Jr. of Virginia Beach and Dr. William H. Rawls and his wife Susan of Norfolk; grandchildren, William M. Hutchens III, Harvey P. Rawls III, Guy Edward Rawls, Virginia Frances Rawls, William H. Rawls Jr. and David Edward Rawls; stepdaughter-in-law and caregiver, Rosemary Swider; stepson, John Swider; and his faithful companion, Buddy. After proudly serving his country in World War II, Harvey attended Elon College in North Carolina and graduated from The Medical College of Virginia in 1952 as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He served his internship at Norfolk General Hospital from 1952 until 1953 and completed his residency in urology at the Medical School of the University of Virginia in 1956. He was certified by the American Board of Urology in 1961, became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1976 and was a member of the American Medical Association until his retirement. He was also a member of the Norfolk Rotary Club and the Norfolk Academy of Medicine. Our dad enjoyed a 40-year medical practice in Tidewater, beginning with his association with the late Dr. John Hill as Hill and Rawls Urology in Norfolk in 1956, and then as a founding partner of Hill, Rawls and O'Connor, then Hill, Rawls, Gallo and Mosquera, Rawls, Gallo, Drucker and Gonzalez, and finally Urology Associates of Tidewater from which he retired in 1992. His practice continues today as Urology of Virginia. Many thousands of patients in our community benefited from his well-known medical and surgical skills, as well as his kindly bedside manner. In addition to his medical practice, Dad's big passion in life was the time he spent deep sea fishing out of Rudee Inlet, Oregon Inlet and Palm Beach, Fla. on his boats, the Faircee I, II, III, IV and V. He loved nothing more than being out on the ocean and hooking a big billfish, whether in a tournament or with family, and he reveled in teaching each of his children and his grandchildren all about boats, fishing and the sea. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. today at our father's church home of 40 years, Hyde Park Free Will Baptist Church, Norfolk, the Rev. Terry Beck officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, followed by a reception at the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, Virginia Beach, is in charge.
