Virginia Obituaries 04/17/2010

Alfred W. JOHNSON Sr.

He was an avid bowler and golfer and loved watching Tiger Woods play. He helped to establish a youth golf club in the Williamsburg area. He had an infectious laugh and was always the life of the party, even when there wasn't a party. He had a way of making people feel better just by talking to them. Although, Mr. Johnson had only two children, he was a father figure to many boys and girls, as well as young men and women. He was gentle, kind and had a loving soul. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.

He remained at Miller School, successfully completing an additional year as a post graduate., He competed in various sports while at Miller School and was offered a scholarship to play football at the University of Virginia. Many a planned family vacation was delayed or cancelled, depending on how long his All Stars remained in competition., He also enjoyed bowling and bowled in the Thursday night men's league for Riverside Lunch until duck pin bowling was discontinued at the local bowling alley. The bowling team, however, continued their Thursday night "bowling" for many years and Dave remained devoted to that activity and the friends he met there until his health made it difficult or impossible for him to attend. His "Bowling Team Family" continues their Thursday night get togethers and their families remain close., Dave is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patsy F. Price of Earlysville; his daughter, Paige Stuart Price "Daddy's Little Girl and her partner, Ann Hansen, of Santa Clara, California; his son, D. Eleanor MCGEHEE

McGEHEE, Eleanor Oppenhimer "Opp," age 72, of Richmond, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on April 14, 2010. She was born in Richmond, the daughter of the late Henry Wise and Eleanor Williams Oppenhimer. She was also predeceased by her brother, Henry Wise Oppenhimer Jr. She is survived by her devoted husband of 48 years, Dr. Read Flournoy McGehee Jr.; four children, Read Flournoy McGehee III and wife, Cathy, of Richmond, John Sergeant Wise McGehee and wife, Sandra Quigg, of Harrisonburg, Marshall McGehee Lewis and husband, Jeff, of Los Angeles and Caroline Parker Pascual and husband, Perry, of Richmond; her beloved grandchildren, Eliza, Jane, Malcolm, Liam, Henry, Maren, Norah; and Marshall's new baby boy due in September, to whom Eleanor was affectionately known as "Oppy"; brother, William Oppenhimer and wife, Ann, of Richmond; and sister-in-law, Bernice Oppenhimer of Richmond. She is further survived by a large extended family, most of whom reside in the Richmond area. Opp's formative years were spent at 1817 Park Avenue. She attended the Collegiate School, where she made friends that she kept her entire life. Even toward the end of her life, she was able to recite the roll of the 5th grade class at Collegiate. One of the hallmarks of her life was her ability to make, keep and maintain friends. Old friends and new were always welcomed equally by Opp. Opp graduated from Hollins College, and afterward met Read, then a young medical school student, in 1959. They shared frozen daiquiris and Brunswick stew on their first date, which began a relationship that lasted more than 50 years. Even though, like all married couples, they shared difficult times, theirs was a deep and abiding love that formed the nucleus of her close and loving family. She loved music and could sometimes be coaxed into playing the piano. Her family fondly remembers her renderings of ridiculous camp songs and recitations of Ogden Nash poems ("if called by a panther, don't anther!") Opp saw her life as a spiritual voyage, and she examined her existence in a way few of us do. Although a lifelong member of St. James's Episcopal Church and a member of the vestry, she also embraced the Jewish roots of her family. Her religious philosophy was further influenced by Buddhist thought and Jungian psychology, all seen through the lens of a quiet, yet strong sense of the divine and the importance of the role of the woman, and especially the mother, in spiritual thought and practice. The symbolism of the labyrinth was important to her and she often found her meditative and spiritual center by walking them. Her friends were many and Opp delighted in them all. She was a member of a wide variety of discussion groups including her dream group, breakfast group, and others. Her life was one of perpetual self-discovery, and she departed this world with courage and dignity that was a model for us all. She made sure to tell us all, including her young grandchildren, "I am not afraid." To the end, she maintained her loving nature, her belief in the inherent goodness of all people, and an absolute devotion to her family. The family will receive friends at Read and Eleanor's home at 113 S. Wilton Rd., from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 18. A memorial service celebrating Eleanor's life will be held at St. James's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 20.

Jennie Mendelsohn

Jennie G. Mendelsohn VIRGINIA BEACH - Sadly, the world lost one of its kindest people, Jennie Mendelsohn, on April 15, 2010. Born May 9, 1921 in Norfolk, to Mary and Louis Greenburg, she married her Maury High School sweetheart, Nathan "Nishie" Mendelsohn on Dec. 10, 1939. She was a nurturing, supportive wife for 59 years and she loved her Nishie! She raised three children Helene Schacter, Howard Mendelsohn and Jeffrey Louis Mendelsohn and later adored her son-in-law, Bob and daughters-in-law, Linda, Margaret and Edna as if they were her own. Family was Jennie's greatest joy and her eight grandchildren - Warren (wife Vanessa), John (wife Booil) and Ben Schacter, Jodilyn (husband Tracy Bush), Andi (husband Eddie Baldree), Jami Mendelsohn, Mariann (husband Will Brush) and Michael Mendelsohn - and later to follow, eight great-grandchildren, Elijah Schacter, Benjamin Schacter, Nathan, Cameron and Brendan Baldree, Brett and Trevor Bush and Mary-Margaret Brush were constant fodder for doting, bragging, affection and unconditional love. The youngest of three siblings, Jennie treasured her close-knit relationships with her sister, Freyda Keller Zimmerman and brother, Abe Greenburg, chatting daily and supporting one another. After retiring in Florida for close to 30 years, Jennie returned to Norfolk in 2008 and enjoyed her reconnection with her childhood friends. She was a lifelong lover of fashion and an enthusiastic mah-jong player. This family has lost its matriarch, an irreplaceable pillar of strength, kindness, love, selflessness, with an easy laugh. In her high school annual, she is quoted as loving "Red Roses, Chocolate Ice cream and Dancing" and that was how Jennie lived... she loved the beauty, sweetness and happiness of life. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 18, at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Please share your love and condolences with the family at www.smithandwilliamsnorfolk.com.

Mary Williams Beane

BEANE, Mary Elizabeth Williams, died on April 15, 2010. Mary Beane was born August 10, 1926, to Charles H. and Daisy Wood Williams in Fleeton, Virginia, the youngest of six children. She grew up on this peninsula on the Chesapeake Bay, a community of watermen who depended on the bay for their livelihood, and which the children depended on for an endless source of fun, curiosity and food during those Depression days. She graduated from Reedville High School in 1943, and moved to wartime Baltimore to be with her siblings. She graduated from Baltimore Business College in 1944 and was employed at the Department of the U.S. Navy, under the leadership of Richard M. Nixon. After her fiance returned from war in the Pacific Theater, she married Straughan Beane on December 14, 1947, and resided over a country store in the Northern Neck of Virginia in a rural farming community called Miskimon. Mary and Straughan raised two children, ran the general store and attended Hopewell Methodist Church. As a young mother, she was active in her children's education, oftentimes including the neighbor's children in swimming lessons, ice skating on the local ponds, sleigh riding, making Halloween costumes, birthday parties, and boating on the Great Wicomico. She and her husband were active in the Acca Shrine, Rappatomac Shrine Club, Hopewell Church and the Richmond Food Dealer's Association. When her husband died, Mary Beane continued operation of the store and became post mistress of the Miskimon Post Office. The fourth class post office was closed in 1976 and storekeeping had changed. Mary Beane returned to the Chesapeake Bay, moving to Sandy Point near Wicomico Church, Virginia, to start again. Her new home was across Ingram Bay near the mouth of the Great Wicomico and Cockrell's Creek from her childhood home of Fleeton. The great Chesapeake lay before her. She took up a life of gardening, "socializing on the Point," Bridge club, square dancing and painting. She took second place in a Rappahannock Art League Exhibition. The water was her home and she spent many hours enjoying the company of friends, sitting on her deck by the bay. When her son returned to the Northern Neck to begin his career in pharmacy, she provided staunch support as bookkeeper and participated in his business ventures by operating Grumpy's Pizza in Lively, Virginia. Mary Beane was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal, Kenwood Presbyterian, Hopewell Methodist and Wicomico Episcopal. Mary Beane was a breast cancer survivor, and an inspiration to all who knew her for her love of life, belief in God and love of her country. Mary Beane was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Thelma, Orvetta, Elvira and Charles. She is survived by her two children, a son, Thomas Straughan Beane Jr.; and daughter, Mary Bonita Beane; and her sister, Cornelia W. Brown.
