Scott Thomas Mathews Roth

Scott Thomas Mathews Roth , 21, of Salem, Va., passed away Thursday, April 8, 2010. Scott was born May 4, 1988. He is one of the few people in this world of whom it can truly be said, "he was loved by everyone who ever met him." Scott had a way of putting everyone at ease around him and drew people to him. One friend said he had "good energy!" He was kind, thoughtful, generous with everything he had giving to anyone freely who could use anything he could offer. His wonderfully dry sense of humor and wit could catch you off guard and make you wait in anticipation for him to say or do something else funny. He was a gifted athlete. He was Captain of the Roanoke Catholic Middle School Track Team. He served as an Altar Boy for Mass at St. Andrews Catholic Church. He said of himself, "You can say what you want about me, but I am who I am, and that is something you could never be. Love me or hate me. I'm still gonna shine!" He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Thomas Rudolf Mathews. He is survived by his mother, Robin Mathews Roth, of Roanoke; his father, Bradley Franklin Tennant, of Norfolk; maternal grandmother, Carol Hinkel Mathews, of Roanoke; aunts, Debbie and Skip Yeatts, of Roanoke, Kim and Mason Cole, of Richmond; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Tennant, of Alexandria, Va.; cousins Mason and Brandon Cole, Jason, Ryan and Chad Yeatts. He is also survived by new father, Doug Jones and sisters, Conner and Grace Jones and brother, Jonathan Jones, all of Salem. He is also survived by two special friends, Allan Portillo and Leslie Bowman, who have been friends in the truest sense of the word. The life of this wonderful young man, whose time with us was all too brief, will be celebrated in Mass at St. Andrews Catholic Church, Monday, April 12, 2010, 11 a.m. Memorials are suggested to the Church Organ Fund of St. Andrews Catholic Church or The Rescue Mission or the charity of your choice. A special request is made by Robin for both mothers and fathers to hug their children; to hug their children today and tell them that they are very loved. You may never get another chance. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.
