Jacocks CHESAPEAKE - Mrs. Annie Mae Hedgebeth Jacocks, 91, formerly of Deep Creek and most recently of the 6400 block of Auburn Ave., Virginia Beach, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 11, 2010. Born in Plymouth, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Maggie Hedgebeth and the widow of the late James A. Jacocks Sr. She was a devout Christian and member of the Braxton Street Gospel Hall, Portsmouth, for many years. She resided in the Pleasant View section of Deep Creek for more than 60 years. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Jean Smith (Horace) of Norfolk, Ms. C. Catherine Jacocks of Hampton and Ms. Odessa Jacocks (Malverse Nicholson) of Norfolk; two sons, James A. Jacocks Jr. (Shirley) of Somerset, N.J. and William Henry "Ratibu" Jacocks (Wilmer Amina Carter) of Rialto, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Special thanks to caregivers, Sharon Jordan, Francine Matthews and Norma Shields, as well as the staff of the Blue Unit at Beth Sholom Village. Arlen Michael Wygal Sr.

Arlen Michael Wygal Sr. went to his well deserved rest with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, April 11, 2010, after a courageous fight with cancer and COPD. Arlen was a very strong and loving man and it showed as he had most of his family at his bedside as he went to be with the Lord. His family was always his first priority. He never once complained about his pain and always had a smile on his face when talking about his family. He is preceded in death by his grandson, Brandon Kirtner. Surviving is his soul mate and wife of almost 52 years, Shirley Shupe Wygal. He had four children, daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Terry Kemp, of Salem; son and daughter-in-law, Arlen Michael Jr. (Mike) and Paige Wygal, of Salem; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Billy Kirtner, of Salem; son and fiancée, Ronnie Wygal and Dora Pietreyk, of Salem; his grandchildren, Alicia Haskins and husband, Jonathan, of Roanoke, Lauren Kemp, of Salem, Daniel and Devin Wygal, of Salem, Bradley and Austin Kirtner, of Salem, Jessica and Abigail Wygal, of Roanoke, and Anna and Matthew Pietreyk, of Salem; his beloved dog, Ginger; brother, Gary Wygal, of Salem; brother and sisterin-law, Eddie and Sandra Shupe, of Salem; sister-in-law and fiance, Carolyn Izon and Henry Braswell, of Bradenton Fla.; and a host of nieces and nephews, and cousins. She attended Burley High School and worked as a domestic. Betty was always so humble, loved by all whom she met; and her joys in life were to cook and play cards., In addition to her husband, she is survived by six sons, Clarence Smith Jr. and his wife, the Reverend Mary, and John, Cecil, Eddie, Robert Lee and Leroy Smith, all of Charlottesville, Virginia; three daughters, Barbara Bellamy of Charlottesville, Virginia, Juanita Brock of Louisa, Virginia, and Mary Douglas and her husband, Mike, of North Garden, Virginia; 22 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty S. Carl was a wonderful man with a heart of gold who was deeply loved and adored and whose life made a difference in the hearts of many. His spirit will live on in his wife of 58 years, Mary Ashbee Pittman; daughter, Deborah Pittman; daughter, Mary Ann Kaplan and husband Shep Kaplan and their son Zachary Kaplan; sisters, Dorothy Aksteter and Janie Melvin. His death was preceded by that of his parents, Donald V. Pittman and Janie Pittman; stepmother, Irene Pittman; brother, Donald V. Pittman. Carl was proud to be a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, retired insurance salesman and avid lifelong deer hunter. The joy in his life was his family, friends and hunting. He was life member of Sunray Hunt Club, Sunbeam Hunt Club and Carrow Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held Thursday, April 15, at 3:30 p.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Carol Yates Fulcher CHESAPEAKE - Early in the morning of Monday, April 12, 2010, Carol Y. Fulcher passed away in her home in the presence of her beloved husband, Gerald Jerry Fulcher Jr. and her adored daughter, Jeri. She was the daughter of the late Willie and Vivian Yates of Portsmouth. Carol was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on July 17, 1965 and served as a faithful witness from that time until her death. Her hope was to live in paradise earth under the Kingdom of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Carol retired from Verizon telephone company after many years of service. Survivors, other than her husband and daughter, are six brothers, Donald, Willie, Randy, Steven, Timothy and Terry Yates; her four sisters, Fay Hopkins, Rosa Long, Etta Fisher and Sona Freeman; many nieces and nephews. Carol was a loving, forgiving friend, cheerful companion and caring witness to many people. Her indomitable spirit will live on in the lives of the people she touched. A memorial service will be conducted April 16 at 2 p.m. at the Broadmoor Congregation of Jehovah Witnesses, 2820 Galberry Road in Deep Creek. Brother Vernon Rascoe will officiate. David G. Ward

David G. Ward, after a courageous battle with cancer, died on Saturday, April 10, 2010, in Charlottesville, Virginia. He faced death fearlessly, just as he had lived, with unwavering hope in Christ. Known for his love of family and community, he was surrounded by a multitude of friends to the very end. He was 46., Born June 20, 1963, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to Dick and Margo Ward, he graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1981. In 1986, he married his "High School Sweetheart", Joanne Underwood. The couple moved to the Charlottesville area in 1991., David Ward held engineering degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and was the Senior Technical Director and President of Barron Associates in Charlottesville. Highly respected in his field, he authored numerous publications and served as the Chair of important national and international committees and conferences. Mr. Ward's research was concentrated in stochastic optimization of complex systems, robust on-line parameter identification, and receding-horizon optimal control. In 1996, Mr. Ward spearheaded the development of an adaptive flight control system that was the first ever to be successfully flight tested., An avid outdoors person, David's life was full of adventure. From piloting small aircraft to mountain biking, playing squash, zip-lining, riding motorcycles, and whitewater rafting, he was always moving. A committed Christian, he was a highly influential leader and skillful Bible teacher who served on the board of Elders in the churches he attended over the years. Dozens of men considered him their "best friend". Intensely humorous, loyal and honest, David was known for his direct but relational style of communicating, loving people enough to tell them the truth and buy them a beer., David Ward was a faithful husband and a loving father. He is survived by his wife; four children, Danielle, Karisa, Caleb, and Nicole; his parents; his brother, Tom Ward, and sister-in-law, Michele, all of Earlysville., A time of viewing and public visitation will be hosted from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, 2010, with an open microphone for sharing memories from 7 until 8 p.m. at the Blue Ridge Community Church, 5372 Lake Saponi Terrace, Barboursville., A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 15, 2010, at the Christ Community Church, 329 Riverside Avenue, in Charlottesville, Virginia, with a reception following. Mr. Wright was preceded in death by his father, Derwood Eubank Wright Sr. He is survived by his mother, Laura Nuckols Wright; sister, Linda Beasley; brother, Robert Wright (Sharon); nephews, Philip Wright (Melissa), Andrew Wright, William Wright and David Beasley. Mr. Wright was born in Richmond, Va. on March 23, 1954. Mr. Wright spent the majority of his adult life in the Roanoke area and was a faithful employee of Roanoke College for 21 years. Derwood loved ice hockey, especially the Pittsburgh Penguins and was a season ticket holder and faithful supporter of the Roanoke Express; his booming voice could be heard cheering for his Express from section 8 at the Roanoke Civic Center. A devoted "Friend of Bill" (8/29/1985), Mr. Wright was tireless in his efforts to help others as he had been helped. He lived his life happy, joyous and free. He was well loved and will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association , P.O. Esther Thompson Whitman

Esther Thompson (Tommie) Whitman, 95, of Roanoke, Va., died on March 1, 2010. She departed this life as she lived it, with spunk and humor, lifting the spirits of those who knew her. Born in Saskatchewan, Canada, she was a tough North Dakotan proud of her Norwegian heritage. A devout lifetime Lutheran, she cherished her friends from St. Marks and Christ Lutheran. Tommie was active in both churches as well as The Lutheran Synod of Virginia. Active in community organizations, Tommie devoted countless hours to causes such as the United Way. She was selected for Mother of the Year for Community Affairs in 1964. She was a long time member of The Magic City Garden Club. A loving wife, mother of six children and nine grandchildren, she could be a fearsome witch at Halloween, a face painting clown and a neighborhood caroler at Christmas. Tommie was an avid athlete, a swimmer, ice skater, bowler and tennis player into her 80's. Tommie was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Dr. William Rush Whitman, whom she met during World War II while both were stationed in Bethesda Naval Hospital. Tommie is survived by her six children and their spouses, Susan Bicksler, of Atlanta, Ga., Esther and John Johnson, of Roanoke, Jane Whitman and Frank Bolger, of Arlington, Va., Billy and Mary Jane Whitman, of Goodview, Va., Nancy and Mike Dickson, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Clay and Mike Morrissett, of Roanoke; and her nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a very special friend and her other daughter, Brenda Gunn and husband, Clifton, who did so much to brighten the last years of her life. The family would like to thank The Court at Roanoke and The Palliative Care at Roanoke Memorial, who took such wonderful care of Tommie. Services will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 22, 2010, at Christ Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church one hour prior to the service. She is survived by her son, Percy Griffin Sr. of Augusta, Ga.; two grandsons, Percy Jr. and Paul Griffin, both of Norfolk; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucille Foreman (Marvin) of Virginia Beach; one brother, Edward Gregory of Elizabeth City, N.C.; three sisters-in- law, Ethel Gregory of Portsmouth, Celestine Gregory of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Lillie Gregory of Chesapeake; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers. A funeral will be held Thursday, April 15, at noon at United House of Prayer for all People on Whittamore Road. Apostle W.P. She was born on September 25, 1939, in Midland, Michigan to the late Rexford Adams and Cora Terry Hancock. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Gene Porter and brother, Jon Hancock. She retired as owner and manager of Famous Recipe Fried Chicken in Blacksburg, Va. where she was fondly referred to as "the Chicken Lady". She devoted her life to the well-being of her children and grandchildren. Langbaum, Francesca Luisa Levi Vidale Langbaum, 88, of Charlottesville died on Sunday, April 11, 2010, in Charlottesville., She was born on April 5, 1922, in Bologna, Italy, the daughter of the late Emilio Levi Vidale, an engineer, and Silvia Treves Vidale, who was a Red Cross nurse during World War II. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Marcello Vidale and Guido Levi Vidale., The family immigrated to the United States in 1939 when Italy began persecuting Jews. Francesca graduated from Wellesley College with a B.A. degree as Phi Beta Kappa with highest honors. She then earned her M. A. degree in French from Cornell University., She married Robert Langbaum in 1950 and had a daughter, Donata Emily Esther in 1950., Francesca worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and then taught Latin at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York. She also taught French at Cornell University and edited the French section of the Random House Unabridged Dictionary. She taught Italian for many years at the University of Virginia and was active in many organizations, including the League of Women Voters, the Wellesley Club and Congregation Beth Israel. Throughout her life, she maintained her close ties with her family and home in Florence, Italy., She is survived by her husband, Robert; her daughter, Emily; her son-in-law, Marcelo; and her three grandchildren, Jessica, Nora, and Peter Rubin., She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a good friend to all who knew her. Harry W. Whiteside Jr., 83, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Saturday evening, April 10, 2010. He was a member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, was a deacon, a member of the Sanctuary Choir, and former finance committee chairman. Mr. Whiteside was a naval veteran of World War II., He graduated from William Fleming High School (where he was senior class president) and was also a graduate of Roanoke College (where he served as president of the student body). Harry graduated from the University of Indiana Savings and Loan Graduate School. He was the former president of First Federal Savings and Loan Association, the former vice-president of Charter Federal Savings and Loan, and a past chairman of the Virginia Savings and Loan League., Mr. Whiteside was a past president of the Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center, a past president of the Backbone Club of the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce, and a past chairman of the Roanoke Valley United Way. Harry was a past president of the Golden Colonels of William Fleming High School. He was a member (since 1964) and past president of the Cosmopolitan Club of Roanoke, and was a leader of the club in organizing the annual Cosmopolitan Track Meet beginning in 1966. Mr. Whiteside served 28 years as a football official, and was a past secretary of the Western Virginia Football Officials Association., Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Rebecca "Becky" M. Whiteside, of Roanoke; three children and their spouses, Katherine and Dean Anderson, of Garrison, N.Y., Harry W. Hazel Whitehurst Keller VIRGINIA BEACH - Hazel Whitehurst Keller, 95, formerly of Virginia Beach, died peacefully in Banning, Calif., on March 25, 2010. Hazel was born in old Princess Anne County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Luther and Nellie Whitehurst. She was preceded in death by her three husbands, Carl Gallup, Carl Godwin and John Keller; a sister, Gladys Allen; and a brother, Levy Whitehurst. Hazel lost three husbands to cancer but she continued to live her life to the fullest. She is now peaceful with her Lord and Savior. Hazel is survived by a son, Carl Gallup Jr. of Banning, Calif.; a sister, Bernice Day and her husband Jim of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; and a very special niece, Elaine Day Pearson of Virginia Beach. Hobert Cecil Hickman BRISTOL, Tenn. Hobert Cecil Hickman, age 85, passed away Sunday, April 11, 2010, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was born Dec. 12, 1924, in Bristol Tennessee, a son of the late George and Myrtle Slagle Hickman. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and was retired from Virginia Woodwork. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Leonard Hickman; brother, Earl "Cotton" Hickman; and sisters, Margaret Graybeal and Lillian Leonard. Survivors include: brother, Hal Hickman; sisters, Colleen Feathers, Shelby Ketron and husband Conley, Hazel Dishner, Georgia Weatherly and Ruth "Polly" Seats; several nieces and nephews. Irene Goddard McMahon, 67, of Roanoke, Va., a resident of and a strong pastoral presence at Our Lady of the Valley Community, these past five years and a long time member of Resurrection Catholic Church in Moneta died this morning, April 11, 2010, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born in New York City on November 16, 1942, a daughter of the late Samuel Dalton Goddard and Evelyn Brister Goddard. She first moved to Smith Mountain Lake in 1979 on the heels of her sister, Pat Goddard Marlar, the foundress of Resurrection parish. It was there that Irene met and married, Jack McMahon who preceded her in 2005. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Martin Newell; and a sister, Sybil Blood. She is survived by a son, Alan Newell; two sisters, Sister Winifred Goddard, and Patricia Goddard Marlar; and a brother, Dennis Goddard. Msgr. Joseph Lehman will preside at a Mass of Resurrection for Irene 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2010, at Resurrection Catholic Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Mass. Her passions in life were teaching, Little Theater, bridge, the beach, sports, music and volunteer work. She is survived by a son, Stephen Lloyd Hanes of Memphis, Tenn., and a daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Bill Skaggs of The Villages, Fla. The family wishes to express their love and gratitude to Lisa Whitehead and the staff at Atria Life Guidance who brought compassionate care and comfort to Jean during her final journey. Jo Ann Beasley Drakos, 82, went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ as she died peacefully at her residence in Charlottesville, April 9, 2010, with her loved ones by her side., Jo Ann was born October 22, 1927, in Amarillo, Texas, to the late LeRoy and Lottie Laura Beasley. They moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Jo Ann was raised., She was also pre-deceased by her brother, Gerald Beasley, M.D.; her sister, Barbara Lee Webb; her husband, Theodore C. Drakos; and her daughter, Carol Ann Drakos Holland., Jo Ann attended West Central High School in Tulsa, and it was there where she met Ted Drakos, whom she would later marry December 11, 1942. He was an outstanding baseball player who represented Oklahoma as an All American in The Esquire Game of 1945 where Ty Cobb was his coach for The West Team and Babe Ruth was coach of The East Team. He signed with the New York Giants farm team during college at the University of Tulsa, and played professionally for two years., Jo Ann was elected as a Princess of Lambda Chi Alpha, Ted's fraternity. She was so adored by the fraternity and elected Princess even though she was not a student at that time., Ted and Jo Ann were married for 33 years before Ted's untimely death at the age of 53 in 1981. Together, they had four children, Theodore Chris Drakos Jr., 58, Kathryn Sue Cattano, 55, married to John P. Cattano, Richard Lawrence Drakos, 52, married to Nancy Strickland Drakos, and Carol Ann Drakos Holland, deceased., Jo Ann also left behind 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren., All will remember her sincere love, encouragement and beautiful smile. Her sweet disposition and kindness made those around her feel blessed by her unconditional love. She was a dedicated mother and a devoted wife., A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, April 17, 2010, at the Bradley Funeral Home in Chatham, New Jersey. The viewing will be at 10 a.m. followed by the funeral service. She will be laid to rest next to her deceased husband, Ted, at the Fairmount Cemetery in Chatham, New Jersey., Her entire family greatly mourns the loss of their very nurturing and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. John Hines Adams MURFREESBORO - The Rev. John Hines Adams, 72, a retired Baptist minister who served in churches across the Southeast and in Central America, died Friday, April 9, 2010 at his home in Murfreesboro, N.C. He had cancer. Adams began his ministry at the Chaplin Fork Baptist Church in Chaplin, Ky., while a student at the Southern Baptist Seminary. He served as pastor of Parkway Baptist Church in Chester, S.C., and Beechlawn Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. He served North Carolina churches as well including Winton Baptist, Manteo Baptist, Blackwell Memorial Baptist in Elizabeth City, Eureka Baptist in Corapeake, Mars Hill Baptist in Colerain, Holly Grove Baptist in Ahoskie, North Henderson Baptist in Henderson, and Connaritsa Baptist in Aulander, where he was pastor at the time of his death. Adams received additional chaplain training at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., and studied the Spanish language at El Instituto de Lengua de Espanola in San Juan, Costa Rica. Following their language study, Adams and his wife Martha Jean served as Southern Baptist missionaries in David, Panama and Isla Verde, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Martha Jean Morris Adams; one son, John Hines Adams Jr. and his wife Sarah Temple Adams of Wayne, Pa.; one daughter, Jean Karole Adams Meares and her husband Danny Meares of Raleigh, N.C.; four granddaughters, Madison Randolph Adams, Lane Elizabeth Adams, Bella Peyton Meares and Ava Gracyn Meares; one brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. and Mrs. L. Adams of Dublin, Ga.; 12 nieces and nephews. A memorial service conducted by Dr. Lee Canipe, pastor of Murfreesboro Baptist Church, will be held at Connaritsa Baptist Church in Aulander, N.C., Saturday, April 17, beginning at 11 a.m. The family will receive visitors in the front of the sanctuary from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Coles of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; two sons, John Striker Sanford IV and Herbert Lippincott Sanford of Norfolk, Virginia; four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews., John also leaves behind his wife and companion for 31 years, Christine Solem, his beautiful vegetable garden, and all the goats at Satyrfield Farm in Albemarle County. Since 1983, he was a vendor at the Charlottesville City Market, providing citizens of our area with organic vegetables and fresh raw goats milk cheese. John believed that individuals had a fundamental right to purchase food for their own consumption direct from the farmer who produced it without governmental interference. As such, he lobbied tirelessly for his beliefs, at City Market, the Virginia General Assembly, and countless other venues. John Travis Epes, 52, of Roanoke, loving husband of Tammy Epes, suddenly, yet peacefully, passed away at his home on Saturday, April 10, 2010. Bubby, as he was affectionately known by his wife and friends, was born in Washington, D.C. to Peter and Ethel Epes, on April 8, 1958. Julia (Judy) Webb Trammell, 84, of Dublin, Va., passed away peacefully on April 11, 2010, at the home of her daughter. Julia was born in Rocky Gap, Va., on October 31, 1925, to the late Algin Joshua and Alverta Webb. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Bryant Trammell, of Dexter, Mo. Also, preceding her in death were two brothers, Price Webb and Jimmy Webb, and seven sisters, Betty Patterson, Myrtle Hylton, Stella Tickle, Hazel Carroll, Freda Opincar, Bessie Manuel, and Ruth Taylor, all of Pulaski, Va. She is survived by her daughter, Jill Trammell Lytton, and son-in-law, Gary Lytton; one son, Jay Webb Trammell, and daughter-in-law, Sharon Burke Trammell; one granddaughter, Christen Petty Tilley, and her husband, Kenneth Tilley, and five beloved great-grandsons, Ethan Michael Barbour, Dawson Blake, Clayton Andrew, Alex Cole, and Brayden Walker Tilley, all of Dexter, Mo. She is also survived by a dear, christian friend, Carol Chasteen, of Dexter. Julia was an avid golfer, and loved playing cards, belonging to many card clubs during her active years. Kathy was the first Chairman of the Board for Faith Christian School in Roanoke as well as the first Chairman of the Board of the Crisis Pregnancy Center in Rocky Mount, N.C. At the time of her home going she was serving as Healthcare Services Coordinator for MDA. Kathy had been a member of First Baptist Church since moving to Roanoke. Surviving are her husband of 33 years, Glen "Roby" Roberson; daughter, Promise Cook and husband, Jeremy, of Harrisonburg; son, Mitchell Roberson, presently serving with the United States Army in Iraq; granddaughter, Annabelle Cook; mother, Geraldine H. Cline, of Morganton, N.C.; and numerous other family members. Leonard Lee Roy (Pepper) Hendricks, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Monday April 5, 2010, at his residence. Leonard was born and raised in Arcadia in Botetourt County then moving to Roanoke. Leonard was a disabled veteran of the United States Navy. He served in Vietnam then ended his service at the U.S. Naval Station in San Francisco, Calif. Leonard will be sadly missed by all that knew him but will never be forgotten. He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Griffin, of Norfolk, Va.; and his five grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Teddy Hendricks; two sisters, Barbara Wells and Faye Ferguson; and his devoted friend, Doris. His entire family and devoted friends simply knew him as "Pepper." Lorraine C. Turner CASTLEWOOD, Va. Dr. Lorraine C. Turner died Saturday, April 10, 2010, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va. She devoted her entire professional career to the Russell County School System as a teacher, supervisor and superintendent. She worked tirelessly to promote the Special Olympics and expand educational opportunities for children and young adults in southwest Virginia. Her love of teaching, faithfulness to God, and compassion for others was apparent in her church involvement and dedication to improving her community. She received a bachelor of arts from Clinch Valley College, a masters in early childhood education from Appalachian State University, and a doctorate of education from East Tennessee State University. She was preceded in death by her father, Frazier J. Cochran. She is survived by her husband, W.A. "Ike" Turner; her mother, Mary Cochran, also of Castlewood; one sister, Sue Kennedy and husband, Red, of Wise, Va.; and several dear nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. A celebration of life service for Dr. Lorraine C. She was preceded in death by her four siblings and her beloved twin, Myrtle Moore. Marian Martin Johnson, 83, of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, April 10, 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Rhett Martin, and Gladys Martin Jones; husband, William V. Johnson; and brother, Blygh Martin. Marian was a graduate of Berea High School and Furman University both of Greenville, S.C. She was a lifelong teacher, teaching in Dacusville, S.C., Woodruff, S.C., Charlotte, N.C., and later retired after 15 years of service with the Roanoke City School System. Marian was a lifetime member of Berea Baptist Church in Greenville, S.C., and later a member of Green Ridge Baptist Church in Roanoke. In the past few years she attended Rosalind Hills Baptist Church and more recently attended North Roanoke Baptist Church along with her son and his family. Marian had served as Sunday School teacher and enjoyed working with the children in Vacation Bible School. Marian was a 50 year member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Iota Master Chapter of Roanoke. She was also a member of the Electa Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are her children, William V. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Betty Jean Woodhouse of 53 years and two daughters, Joyce Whitehurst and Gloria Woodhouse. She was an Inspector at the Naval Ordinance Plant during World War II; was a longtime employee of McCroys Five and Dime Store, where she worked her way up to manager. After her retirement she worked at Sears. She as a member of Starcher Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Cherry; husband, Earl V. Glenn; sisters, Betty Lucas, and Margaret Canterbury; and brother, John W. Nell S. Huffman, 91, of Pearisburg, Va., and formerly of Narrows, Va., went to be with her heavenly Father on Sunday, April 11, 2010. She was born on April 21, 1918, in Montgomery County, Va., to the late William T. Stone and Allie Tillie Stone. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kelly H. Huffman; daughters-in-law, Judy Bradley Huffman and Trudy Turner Huffman; sisters, Margaret Grogg, Allie Martin and Mary McCoy; and brothers, William T. Stone, Boyd Stone and Robert Stone., Nell was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows where she served for many years as a Junior Deacon, Choir member and Sunday School Teacher, and was a life time member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #68 in Narrows, where she held many positions. She worked for many years in the shoe department of Coburn's Department Store in Narrows and Pugh's Department Store in Narrows serving many customers who became friends over the years., Nell was a devoted Christian, wife and mother. Patricia O'Grady Sullivan, of Roanoke, Va., and formerly of Covington, La., gracefully passed into Heaven on Saturday, April 10, 2010, after a valiant straggle with cancer. Waiting to welcome her home were her daughter, Kerry Anne Sullivan; and parents, Frederick and Helen O'Grady. Born on December 11, 1930, in Flushing, N.Y., Pat attended Finch College for Women in New York City and Parsons School of Design in Manhattan. Prior to marriage, Pat worked as a commercial artist in New York City for LIFE Magazine. Throughout her life, she proved to be a talented artist, and enjoyed the artistry in gardening, as well. Mostly, she loved all things related to golf., In 1970, Pat and her family moved to the New Orleans area and settled into their beloved Tchefuncta Country Club. While there, Pat was a three time Ladies Golf Club Champion and an avid bridge player. After enjoying a full life in Louisiana, Pat came to Roanoke to be with her son, Chip, post-hurricane Katrina., Pat spent her final days surrounded by family and friends at Friendship Retirement Community., Living to carry on her legacy are daughter and son-in-law, Doreen Sullivan Garcia and Jimmy Garcia, of Anchorage, Alaska; son and daughter-inlaw, Chip and Kari Sullivan, of Troutville; beloved grandchildren, Kalley, Camryn, and Colby Sullivan, all of Troutville; and cousins, Dr. Hugh and Carolyn McGrath of Metarie, La., and Elizabeth Arrowsmith, of Enfield, England; as well as countless friends, especially Al and Katherine Amsler of Sewickley, Pa., and Art and Alda Cummings, of Long Island, N.Y., The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Friendship Manor and Good Samaritan Hospice and all those who kept her in their thoughts and prayers. RUFFIN, Raymond S., 97, of Henrico County, formerly of Hanover County, passed away on Saturday, April 10, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Clara Flowers Ruffin. He is survived by two daughters, Carolyn R. Jeter and Ray Lynn Newcomb, both of Henrico County; three grandchildren, Michelle J. Lodato and husband, Matthew, of Herndon, Va., Scott A. Newcomb of Richmond, Va., and Kenneth M. Jeter Jr. of Midlothian, Va.; one great-granddaughter, Savannah C. Jeter of Sterling, Va. All his life, Mr. Ruffin loved designing and building things, and got to experience the thrill of being part of the early days of radio, refrigeration, television and eventually laser technology. As a young boy, he built one-tube radios for family and neighbors, and eventually worked for WMBG in Richmond. He then helped build and operate the equipment for WTVR-6 in the early years of television in Richmond. From 1950 to 1975, he held a faculty appointment in the Department of Biophysics, Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, designing and building instruments for medical research. While employed at MCV/VCU, he was involved in design and development of early lasers used in the treatment of Eye Disease. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps at Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey, and Detroit, Michigan. The family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bliley's - Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where a funeral service will be held 12 noon Thursday. Interment Greenwood Memorial Park. She held memberships in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, a Charter Member of The Links, Inc. and a member of The Pinochle Bugs. Ruth Johanna Tingley, 64, of Waynesboro, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, April 10, 2010, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with lung cancer., Ruth was born on April 14, 1945, in Pfaffenhofen/Ilm, Germany, to the late Anna and Karl Mannhardt. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Isle Jones, of Texas., Ruth enjoyed nurturing her flower gardens, she loved traveling with her husband and family, bird watching and reading while relaxing by the pool. But most of all Ruth loved spending time with her family and friends. Ruth worked at National Legal Research Group for 30 years before retiring in January 2009., Ruth leaves behind her loving and devoted husband, Warren H. Tingley; her two sons, Derrick G. Stanley W. Pope FRANKLIN - Stanley Wilson Pope, 76, died April 11, 2010 at Southampton Memorial Hospital. He was born in Northampton County, North Carolina, a son of the late Fannie DeBerry Pope and Zephaniah Pope, and was predeceased by a son-in-law, Scottie Whitley, six brothers, and four sisters. Stanley was a U.S. Army veteran and worked his entire life in the automobile business. He started working at a young age with his brother, L.E. Pope, owner of Pope Motors in Rich Square. He moved his family to Franklin in 1964 and worked for Blythe Ford, Blake Ford, Sadler Auto Center, and most recently, Mike Duman in Franklin. He was a member and deacon of Franklin Baptist Church and treasurer of the Christian Men's Bible Class. Stanley loved being around people and was always interested in helping others. He leaves behind good friends at Dairy Queen and several special golf buddies. He loved his family and enjoyed vacationing with his children and grandchildren. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 56 years, Shirley Maddrey Pope; three daughters, Rhonda P. Joyner (Jeff), Cathy P. Whitley, Kimberly P. Billups (Daryl); five grandchildren, Jason Joyner, Mary J. Dunn, Michael Whitley, Tyler Billups, Cody Billups; and one great-grandson, Timothy Dunn Jr. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 14, at Franklin Baptist Church with the Rev. Verna Fuqua Fullen ABINGDON, Va. She fought a good fight, she kept the faith. Verna Fuqua Fullen, 69, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 9, 2010, after a brief illness. She was born June 20, 1940, in Emory, Va., and was a daughter of the late Roy and Willie Mae Jackson. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Marshall Fuqua Jr. Survived by her loving husband, Billy Fullen Sr.; her children, Helen Fuqua, Marshall Fuqua and special daughter-in-law, Penny Fuqua, Cynthia Fuqua-Clark and husband, Melvin, Billy Fullen Jr. and wife, Heather. She also leaves grandchildren, Cody Fuqua, Briana Fuqua, Nathaniel Fullen, Noah Clark, Keegan Fullen and Nichlas White. She also anxiously awaited the arrival of her first great-grandchild, Aaliyah. She is also survived by a special sister, Mary Ann Bowers; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. She was saved in 1978 after being baptized in Jesus' name and filled with the Holy Ghost. She served faithfully under the pastor-ship of Verlie Haynes at Kings Chapel Church. She was a faithful member and worker of the West Virginia and East Tennessee Council, District 23 of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. She served as a Junior missionary president, vice-president of the Helping Hand Auxiliary and was also a member of the Minister's Alliance with the District 23 Council. The one position that she held that she deemed most important was being the service leader during the morning council sessions. After the death of Pastor Haynes, she was installed as pastor of Kings Chapel Church where she served until her death. The family wishes to extend their thanks to Linda Robinson, a friend and caregiver to Mrs. Fullen. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, 2010, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Suff. Bishop Kevin Cash officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Edward Fuqua II, Charles Tucker, Gary Carter, Jeff Fullen, Jimmy Fullen and Ronnie Norris. Walter Bond

Walter L. Bond BRISTOL, Va. Walter L. Bond, age 90, passed away Sunday, April 11, 2010, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and David Clemens, in Meadowview, Va. Walter was born Jan. 26, 1920, in Louisa, Va., a son of the late Omer and Mary Procter Bond. He served 32 years in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II and The Korean War. Mr. Bond was a first class aviation mechanic and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association. He later moved to the greater Bristol area where he was employed by Stonewall Jackson Middle School, was a member of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church and sang in the Euclid Avenue Baptist Church Choir. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Homer Bond and James Bond. Survivors include: his wife of 67 years, Elva Bond; daughter, Teresa Clemens; granddaughter, Elizabeth Sydney Patrick; great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Cody and Breanna Patrick; sisters, Bessie Johnson, Annie Davis and Mayme Poindexter; brother, George Bond; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Bond will be held at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Robert Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. prior to the funeral service. The committal service and burial will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Mountain View Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Bristol VFW Honor Guard. William Roscoe "Shine" Bowers BRISTOL, Va. William Roscoe "Shine" Bowers, age 96, passed away Saturday, April 10, 2010, in Salem, Va. He was born in Washington County, Va., a son of the late John William and Mary Catherine Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Rose Bowers; one son, Tony Dale Bowers; stepmother, Georgia Pearl Bowers; three brothers, Edgar Lee Bowers, James Clarence "Page" Bowers and John William "Tobe" Bowers; and four sisters, Daisy Marie Harley, Nora Pearl Harley, Nellie Delores Anderson and Katherine Ruth Dowell. Survivors include two sons, Guy Bowers and wife, Betty of Salem and Roger Bowers and wife, Jeanne of Salem; two daughters, Sharon Rasnake and husband, Sammy of Salem and Phyllis Wood and husband, Danny of Wise, Va.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Elvin "Nub" Bowers, Ralph "Willy" Bowers and Jackie "Tuff" Bowers; and seven sisters, Ethel Dickenson, Eva Moore, Margaret Nash, Betty Watson, Faye Roark, Ann Roark and Carolyn Tomlinson. `Shine lived all of his life in Bristol Virginia and was a faithful long-time member of Scenic Park Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years. He worked hard all of his life as a farmer, carpenter and gardener. He was plain spoken and will always be remembered for his sense of humor, his quick wit and his love for people and music. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, 2010, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Clarence Dishman and Rev. Scott Price officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Lynn Sproles, Stan Cook, Steve Lovins, Larry Haga, Larry Nash and Cliff Ginger. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Syed Haider and office staff in Salem and Ruth Nash, R.N. of Amedisys Hospice. William T. Eason Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - William T. Eason Jr., 81, went to be with the Lord April 11, 2010. He was the son of the late William Sr. and Bettie Eason. He was also preceded in death by five siblings, Kelly Eason, Hubert Eason, Norfleet Eason, Elizabeth Batts and Horace Eason and an aunt, Lena Eason. He and his wife, Elizabeth were members of Indian River Baptist Church for several years. He was a member of the George W. Wright Masonic Lodge No. 346. Bill was a customs broker and engaged in overseas shipping and freight forwarding; he retired from W.M. Stone. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Elizabeth W. Eason; children, William T. Eason III and wife Maureen of Atlanta, Deborah Forehand and husband Melvin of Chesapeake, Lisa MacKenzie and husband Glenn of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Kimberly Sampson, Jennifer Eason and Sean Eason; several nieces, nephews and friends. He will be greatly missed. A service will be held Thursday, April 15, at 11 a.m. in Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach.
