Agnes Cabell Izac Waller Berge died on Friday, April 9, 2010, in Roanoke, Va., at the age of 93. She was the daughter of the only Naval Officer awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor [CMH] in World War One, and a long time figure of prominence on Capital Hill, where she was widely known as "Happy." Happy spent her youth swimming and diving for Abalones near San Diego with Johnny Weismueller, Esther Williams, and Buster Crabbe. She missed out on the United States Olympic swimming team by a fraction of a second., She was schooled in France along with her brothers, Ed and Charles. Happy returned from France to help her father, Edouard Victor lzac C.M.H., who served six terms as a Congressman from San Diego. After her marriage to Robert Melvin Waller, of Danville, Va., she raised three children., Though her first calling was the traditional role of wife and mother, when her husband died in 1952, she was forced to return to work on the Hill. She reluctantly became a personification of a large cultural change, from the mother at home to the modern day woman competing with men in the marketplace. Happy thrived on the Hill as the long time Administrative Assistant to Representative Gus Kelley of Pennsylvania. She went on to work for Rep. Biz Johnson of California, Rep. Roy Weir, and Chairman Adam Clayton Powell of New York, writing speeches, legislation, and caring for constituent needs., She retired when she married Woodrow Louis Berge in 1957. Mr. Berge's daughter, Polly Ann Berge, became a full member of Happy's blended family. Mr. Berge became Director of Real Estate for The Army Corps of Engineers. Following the death of Mr. Berge in 1998, Happy remained in her Arlington, Va., home and Saint Agnes Parish. In 2005 she took residence at Park Oak Grove in Roanoke, Va., to be closer to family and the Catholic community of Our Lady of Nazareth., She is survived by her sons, Robert M. Waller, of Calvert Beach, Md., and Ron Waller of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., and formerly from Louisville, Ky.; daughter, Mary Carroll Lipps and her husband, David, live in Roanoke, Va.; her stepdaughter, Polly Ann Berge and her husband, Richard Tuggle, reside in Grass Valley, Calif.; her brother, Ed lzac is in Anaheim, Calif.; while her sister, Suzanne Izac Quinlan, and her brother, Father Andre Izac, live in Rodanthe, N.C. Happy had 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren., She will be interred 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at National Memorial Park Cemetery in Falls Church, Va., with a graveside service officiated by Father James Gould. There will be a memorial service 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at Park Oak Grove in Roanoke., The family appreciates the support and condolences from Happy's many friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Happy's name to Good Samaritan Hospice, Roanoke, Va. Arrangements by Murphy Funeral Service, 1102 W. Broad St. in Falls Church, Va. 22046, 703-533-0341. Grace Thacker Drumheller transferred her membership to heaven on Thursday, April 8, 2010., She was born on December 3, 1910, in Craigsville, Virginia, the daughter of the late George and Ada Bryant Thacker., Grace was a pioneer of her time and worked outside the home during the 1950's. She was employed at Frank IX and Sons in Charlottesville and retired after 33 years of service. Her husband, Curtis Henry Drumheller died at the early age of 49, leaving her to maintain the household alone for many years., When her son, Curtis Vernard retired from the military in 1969, he moved her in with his family at their hometown of Alberene. Grace embraced her son's family and played an important role in all of their lives. "Granny", as she was called by most, made sure Patty and Penny went with her to church every Sunday and it was Johnny who was her main caretaker in the last few years of her life. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, soap operas, games, gardening, and cooking. She mainly loved going places and having visitors. She loved making people laugh and always had to have the last laugh (word)! She was a lifelong member of Alberene Baptist Church and made many friends there and elsewhere., She was preceded in death by many of her loved ones: her husband and son; two brothers, Herbert and Wallace Thacker; her daughter-in-law, Kiyoko Henza Drumheller; her granddaughter-in-law, Sylvia Dale Drumheller; her great-grandson, Justin Allen Maupin; and numerous close friends., It is hard to say good-bye to the cornerstone of our family and her 99 years of history. It was always enlightening to hear stories about everything she had experienced during her lifetime, living in a house with no electricity or running water, having to get wood to fuel a fire in order to cook or keep warm, her husband working for 25 cents a day, the depression, World War II, traveling everywhere by foot or horse and buggy, community dances with no alcohol!, and no telephonesjust so many things that she could tell us. We will miss that., She is survived by her three grandchildren, Hideo John Drumheller and his girlfriend, Cheryl Hotaling, Patty Maupin and her husband, Cecil, Penny Shifflett and her husband, Rodney; five great-grandchildren, Tonya Washington, Kasi Drumheller, Whitney Maupin, Dustin Shifflett and Joshua Shifflett, and another on the way; two great-great grandchildren, Kaiden and Kayla Drumheller; two nephews, Lloyd and William Thacker and their families; and a special granddaughter-in-law, Judy Drumheller., The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff at The Cedars and The Golden Living Center, with special recognition going to Margaret Monroe and April Pritchett for the wonderful care they gave to Granny during her stay there., The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Sunday April 11, 2010, at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home in Scottsville., Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday April 12, 2010, at Alberene Baptist Church in North Garden with graveside services following at Alberene Cemetery., In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested donations be made to Alberene Baptist Church, 2728 Plank Road, North Garden, VA 22959. |

Scott Thomas Mathews Roth is one of the few people in this world of whom it can truly be said, "he was loved by everyone who ever met him." Scott had a way of putting everyone at ease around him and drew people to him. One friend said he had "good energy!" He was kind, thoughtful, generous with everything he had giving to anyone freely who could use anything he could offer. His wonderfully dry sense of humor and wit could catch you off guard and make you wait in anticipation for him to say or do something else funny. He was a gifted athlete. He was Captain of the Roanoke Catholic Middle School Track Team. He served as an Altar Boy for Mass at St. Andrews Catholic Church. He said of himself, "You can say what you want about me, but I am who I am, and that is something you could never be. Love me or hate me. I'm still gonna shine!" He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Thomas Rudolf Mathews. He is survived by his mother, Robin Mathews Roth, of Roanoke; his father, Bradley Franklin Tennant, of Norfolk; maternal grandmother, Carol Hinkel Mathews, of Roanoke; aunts, Debbie and Skip Yeatts, of Roanoke, Kim and Mason Cole, of Richmond; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Tennant, of Alexandria, Va.; cousins Mason and Brandon Cole, Jason, Ryan and Chad Yeatts. He is also survived by new father, Doug Jones and sisters, Conner and Grace Jones and brother, Jonathan Jones, all of Salem. He is also survived by two special friends, Allan Portillo and Leslie Bowman, who have been friends in the truest sense of the word. The life of this wonderful young man, whose time with us was all too brief, will be celebrated in Mass at St. Andrews Catholic Church, Monday, April 12, 2010, 11 a.m. Memorials are suggested to the Church Organ Fund of St. Andrews Catholic Church or The Rescue Mission or the charity of your choice. A special request is made by Robin for both mothers and fathers to hug their children; to hug their children today and tell them that they are very loved. You may never get another chance. Dora's love of music was only eclipsed in recent years by her love of serving the community. They especially looked forward to her surprises when she would fix a pot of grits on cold mornings. "As for me and my house we will serve the lord." Joshua 24:15 Thomas Lee (Tommy) Agner, of Vinton, Va., died on Friday, April 9, 2010, following a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Tom was preceded in death by his grandparents, Abe and Lula Jordan and Raymond and Julia Agner; his beloved mother, Ruth Agner Temple; his father, Elton Junior Agner; his stepfather, Marion Temple; and a brother, Gerald "Buddy" Agner., Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Daphenia Jo "Daffy" Almany Agner; a son, Stephen Thomas Agner, of Vinton; a daughter, Vicki Lee Grant and her husband, Rick; a granddaughter, Rebekah Lee Grant, all of Blue Ridge; a brother, Don Agner and his wife, Jane, of Sterling, Va.; and his trusted friend and companion, Spaz, the cat., Tom was born in Vinton on April 5, 1938, and lived for a part of his childhood in Washington, D.C., returning to Vinton around the age of nine. He lived with his grandparents, Abe and Lula until 1956, when he returned to Washington to take his first job in the office of the Secretary of the Air Force at the Pentagon. He worked for the Federal Government a total of 31 years, retiring in 2000 from the Department of Veterans Affairs in Roanoke. Along the way, he also worked for the Roanoke City Police Department, Arlington Baptist Church and Faith Chapel., Tom was an ordained minister and served the Lord from the time he was a young man. He never stopped serving even as his health deteriorated and he became homebound. At that time, he began writing poetry and preparing outlines for Bible study. His work was used in many ways around the country and even around the world as his good friend, Mike Twitchell, took his written words on his missionary journeys. Tom's ministry reached farther after he was confined to home than it ever did before., Tom was a graduate of Washington Bible College and William Byrd High School. He recalled with humor being one of the "iron men" the starting five for the Terrier's varsity basketball team. They were given that nickname by a sportswriter in the 1955 to 1956 season, when they played an entire game without any substitutions and won breaking a 19 game Jefferson High winning streak., His greatest fulfillment was in his children, who gave him so much joy and he prayed over them faithfully every day of their lives. There never was a more gentle or caring man. He loved the Lord, his family and friends, the Boston Celtics, Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls, Washington Redskins football and whatever team was playing against the Dallas Cowboys., In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Tom's memory to the work of the Construction Teams Ministry, Advancing Native Missions, Post Office Box 5303, Charlottesville, Va. 22905., The family wishes to thank the angels at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, 10 Mountain, 105 Palliative Care, and Carilion Hospice for helping Tom die with dignity and for your love and support., Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. on Monday, April 12, 2010, at Lotz Vinton Chapel with Tom's good friend and mentor, the Reverend Jack Jackson, officiating; his dear friend and best man, Mike Twitchell, will deliver the eulogy.
