Albert M. Mosby Sr.

MOSBY, Albert M. Sr., departed this life peacefully on April 10, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife, Addie B. Lee Mosby; and son, Eugene Mosby. He is survived by his children, four daughters, Alfreda Squire (William), Francine Robertson, Marie Carter and Chandra Barnes (Garry); three sons, James Watkins Jr. (Wylene), Albert Mosby Jr. (Audrey) and Boyd Lee Mosby; six children that he lovingly referred to as his adopted children, Jacqueline Baccus, Barbara Buchanan, Jean Hinton, Brent and Derik Jones and Nicole Page; nine grandchildren, Melvin III, Victor Jr., Tanecia, Kevin, Pam, Winshell, Terice, Avery and Lauren; 21 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, among them devoted Patsy and Richard Mundy; other cousins, relatives and friends; two very special friends, Alphonso Mills and Albert Hinton. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19 and Hull Streets. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 15, 12 noon at First Baptist Church, 1501 Decatur St. Interment in Maury Cemetery.

Hunt Jr.); three grandchildren, Libby Casey of Washington, D.C., Joy Garlin Hunt of Portland, Oregon, and William Radler Hunt of Durham, N.C. In addition, Alice was predeceased by her parents, Alice and John S. Funk of Charlottesville, five equally independent and sassy sisters, and one outnumbered brother. Alice never told her age, though inquiring minds wanted to know. And you'd be surprised; she was born on September 18, 1922. A viewing will be held on Thursday, April 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, Virginia. A graveside celebration will be held on Friday, April 16 at 10 a.m. at Washington Memorial Park.

MILLER, Alida Elizabeth, 82, of Richmond, went home to be with the Lord April 13, 2010. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Roger A. Miller Sr. She is survived by three children, Roger (Judy), Richard (Christine) and Robin; eight grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris), Christy (Daniel), Rebecca, Joshua, Katie, Caroline, Hunter, Rachel; one brother, Welcome Carpenter of Rome, N.Y.; and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 15, 2010, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, Va. A service will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home Chapel, 2 p.m. April 16, 2010, followed by interment at Washington Memorial Park, 6217 Memorial Drive, Sandston, Va. Anna Allen

Anna Mae Burchette Allen GIBSONVILLE, N.C. Anna Mae Burchette Allen, 88, passed away on April 7, 2010, at Moses Cone Hospital. A funeral service was held Sunday, April 11, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church under the direction of Forbis and Dick Funeral Service with the Rev. Dolly Hunt officiating. Interment followed at Alamance Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Mrs. Allen was born in Elkhorn, W.Va., on June 2, 1921, to David Luther and Aurelia Patrick Burchette. She was a graduate of Concord College in Athens, W.Va., and was a teacher for the Guilford County Schools. She was a resident of Greensboro for 55 years. She was a member of Alamance Presbyterian Church where she served as church historian, Sunday school teacher, a Bible school teacher, and a member of the Presbyterian Women who honored her with a Lifetime Membership Award. Together with her husband, Roscoe, she compiled the first comprehensive listing of the Alamance Church Cemetery. Mrs. Allen was a member of the Guilford Battle Chapter DAR, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Roscoe Jackson Allen; a son, Charles Burchette Allen; sisters, Margaret E. Burchette, Mildred Burchette, Dolores Burchette Mottesheard; and a brother, Clifford Burchette. Mrs. Allen is survived by her son, Roscoe Jackson Allen Jr. and wife Marilyn of Greensboro; her daughter, Dolores "Risa" Allen Witherspoon and husband Jim Witherspoon of Gibsonville; grandchildren, Roscoe J. Allen III of Graham, Jennifer Allen Brannock and husband Chris of Pleasant Garden, Charles Patrick Allen and wife Amy of Crofton, Md., David Witherspoon and wife Lisa of McLeansville, Teresa W. Burgess and husband Joey of Holly Springs, N.C., Michael Witherspoon of Gibsonville, James Witherspoon Jr. and wife Ashley of McLeansville, Allen C. Witherspoon and fianc‚ Pen Slaydon of Whitsett; and brother, David Luther Burchette of Raleigh; 15 great-grandchildren; one great- great-grandchild; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Allen is also survived by special brothers, J.R. Allen and wife Margaret of Abingdon, Va., and Charles F. Allen and wife Jeanette of Kernersville; caregiver Burnette Moore; and special friend, Shirley Simpson, both of Gibsonville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Dr. Roscoe J. Charles L. "Charley" Beall

BEALL, Charles "Charley" L., 70, of Richmond, Va., passed away on April 10, 2010, after a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil H. and Icie M. Beall; sister, Sharon A. Beall; and his youngest son, Jonny "Wishbone" Beall. He was born in Baltimore, Md., on March 12, 1940, and grew up in Joppa, Md. He was in the first graduating class of Edgewood High School. As a member of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, Charles graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He entered the U.S. Air Force as a second lieutenant in May 1964 and served as an electronic engineer in various acquisition and logistics assignments at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida; McClellan AFB, California; and Hanscom AFB, Massachusetts. While in the Air Force, Charles obtained his Master's in Business Administration in 1974 from the Golden Gate University in San Francisco, California. He began his civil service career in July 1976 as an electronic engineer at the Army Logistics Center, later the Combined Arms Support Command located at Fort Lee, Virginia. During his thirty-one years at Fort Lee, Charles worked on various Research and Development Logistics Software Programs and retired January 3, 2008. He was an Eagle Scout and served as an Explorer Advisor/ Scoutmaster and enjoyed being a Little League coach for baseball, basketball and soccer. He was a competitive tennis and racquetball player, and in retirement he enjoyed playing golf with friends and grandsons as well as riding a road bike with the Richmond Area Bicycling Association. He is survived by his wife, Marlene H. Beall; sons, Michael and wife, Maria, and Gregg and wife, Loriann; stepchildren, Wayne Kickler and wife, Barbara, Kim Miller and husband, John, and Lisa Beck and husband, Mike; brothers, Jim and wife, Judy, of Vail, Ariz., and Ron and wife, Betty, of Abingdon, Md.; sister, Carole Sniegowski and husband, Gary, of Joppa, Md.; 11 grandchildren, Brandon, Tyler, Cameron, Orion, Haiele, Travis, John, Christina, Natalie, Holly and Ashley. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Gwen Beall; and his caring father-in-law, Merril Scarborough. He is survived by many other loving relatives and his wonderful loyal co-workers, friends and neighbors. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 15, 2010, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. He will be remembered for his beautiful smile, creativity, loyalty, and sense of humor., Chris was a loving son, grandson, brother, nephew, and friend., He is survived by parents, Christopher and Jean Gardner of Madison, Alabama; a sister, Ashleigh Volker of Kennesaw, Georgia; and grandparents, LeRoy and Petrina Spence of Herndon, Virginia, and Constance Gardner of Falls Church, Virginia., He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Murray Gardner. Cora Lee Thomas

Cora Lee (Saylor) Thomas, 88, of Mechum's River, Virginia, died on Friday, April 9, 2010, after a lengthy battle with stomach cancer. She had resided at Hospice House for the past three months., Cora was born in Mitchell County, North Carolina, on February 15, 1922, to the late Henry Arthur Saylor and Nola (Buchanan) Saylor. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Ray Saylor formerly of Cullen, Virginia, and Lucille (Saylor) Krygier, formerly of South Carolina., In addition to her parents, her brother and sister, she was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years, Bernis E. Thomas, who died on September 29, 2009. They were a remarkable couple. Their faith in God carried them through some terrible events. A son, David Arthur died on Christmas Day, 1979. He was 25 years old. A daughter, Juanita Ann "Judy" (Thomas) Shiflet died on March 5, 1985 from scleraderma - a disease which took such a toll on her health for many years. She was almost 39 years old when she died. A granddaughter, Monica Lorraine (Thomas) Maxim died in January 2009. She was 30 years old., Two children survive mom, a son, Kenneth E. Thomas and his wife, Betty, of Mechum's River, Virginia; and a daughter, Alice Marie (Thomas) Haney and her husband, James Edward Haney, of Palmyra, Virginia. She is also survived by a sister, Anna Mae (Saylor) Taylor of Cullen, Virginia; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Hazel (Thomas) Bauernfeind of Baltimore, Maryland, and the Reverend Joyce Kramer of Virginia Beach, Virginia. There are six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren who survive her. Many nieces and cousins survive her, too. Mom had the job of raising children, while Dad was often overseas., They were married in 1943, so he was serving his country during wartime and was in danger many times. He had a career in the United States Navy. When he retired in 1958, we moved to our home at Mechum's River, near Crozet, Virginia. Soon, mom was working alongside of Mrs. Agnes Sandridge of Crozet, Virginia, managing the school cafeteria at Crozet Elementary. Later she worked some at Brownsville Elementary. Our parents served faithfully in their church, Hillsboro Baptist in Yancey's Mill, Virginia., They were also active members of the Douglas Hall Kirby VFW Post 8436 in Yancey's Mill, Virginia., A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15, 2010, at Hillsboro Baptist Church. There will be a reception following at the church. Burial for our parents will be for family only at Hillsboro Church Cemetery., The family wishes to acknowledge the Hospice of the Piedmont for their help in our parents' care since 2009. Also, the Hospice House on Park Street gave mom such loving care the last months of her life., We ask that contributions be made either to the Douglas Hall Kirby VFW Post 8436 at Yancey's Mill, Virginia, or to Hospice of the Piedmont. We appreciate all the expressions of love from friends and family to Mom and Dad over the years. As they blessed many lives, they were blessed by the love of so many of you.

Cynthia Ann Brimberry FRANKLIN - Cynthia Ann Brimberry passed away April 13, 2010 at Sentara Obici Hospital. She was born Jan. 25, 1962 at the Naval Air Station, Quonset Point, R.I. As the daughter of a career naval officer, she lived in many different locations during her youth before settling in Denton, Texas where she resided with her husband and family for many years before moving to Franklin seven years ago. Cindy is survived by her father and stepmother, Herbert and Sophia Taylor of Ivor; her mother, Mary Sue Taylor of Georgetown, Texas; her husband of 29 years, Billy Brimberry of Franklin; four children, William "Will" Brimberry and Christopher "Chris" Brimberry, both of Franklin, Kimberly "Kim" Brimberry of Denton, Texas, and Nichole Brimberry of Franklin. She is also survived by three brothers and one sister, Jay Taylor and Kenneth Taylor, both of Georgetown, Texas, Donald Taylor of Dallas, and Sandra Spencer of McKinney, Texas. Cindy is also survived by, and would want us to mention, her Aunt Lou and Uncle Rob of Lewisville, Texas, whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by one brother, Allen Wayne Taylor. As an adult, Cindy worked off and on for many years as a secretary, stenographer, bookkeeper, and office manager. She loved all kinds of music but was partial to country music based on her adopted state of Texas. In addition to music she loved dancing, camping, fishing, and swimming and always enjoyed a day on the beach. She was a devoted wife, mother and daughter who loved helping others. In addition to her loving family, she leaves behind many, many friends and relations, some of who have traveled thousands of miles to be with her during her last days on earth. Two very close friends of 18 years, Bo and Sandra Barr of Brownwood, Texas, have been here to support Cindy and her family in her time of need. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, April 16, at Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Williams officiating. David G. Ward

David G. Ward, after a courageous battle with cancer, died on Saturday, April 10, 2010, in Charlottesville, Virginia. He faced death fearlessly, just as he had lived, with unwavering hope in Christ. Known for his love of family and community, he was surrounded by a multitude of friends to the very end. He was 46., Born June 20, 1963, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to Dick and Margo Ward, he graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1981. In 1986, he married his "High School Sweetheart", Joanne Underwood. The couple moved to the Charlottesville area in 1991., David Ward held engineering degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and was the Senior Technical Director and President of Barron Associates in Charlottesville. Highly respected in his field, he authored numerous publications and served as the Chair of important national and international committees and conferences. Mr. Ward's research was concentrated in stochastic optimization of complex systems, robust on-line parameter identification, and receding-horizon optimal control. In 1996, Mr. Ward spearheaded the development of an adaptive flight control system that was the first ever to be successfully flight tested., An avid outdoors person, David's life was full of adventure. From piloting small aircraft to mountain biking, playing squash, zip-lining, riding motorcycles, and whitewater rafting, he was always moving. A committed Christian, he was a highly influential leader and skillful Bible teacher who served on the board of Elders in the churches he attended over the years. Dozens of men considered him their "best friend". Intensely humorous, loyal and honest, David was known for his direct but relational style of communicating, loving people enough to tell them the truth and buy them a beer., David Ward was a faithful husband and a loving father. He is survived by his wife; four children, Danielle, Karisa, Caleb, and Nicole; his parents; his brother, Tom Ward, and sister-in-law, Michele, all of Earlysville., A time of viewing and public visitation will be hosted from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, 2010, with an open microphone for sharing memories from 7 until 8 p.m. at the Blue Ridge Community Church, 5372 Lake Saponi Terrace, Barboursville., A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 15, 2010, at the Christ Community Church, 329 Riverside Avenue, in Charlottesville, Virginia, with a reception following. HAMMACK, Elise Eugenia Bowles, 85, of Richmond, died April 9, 2010 at The Hermitage at Cedarfield. Few words can describe Elise, but she will be fondly remembered for her compassion, wit, humor and intelligence. She was born at home in Jordan Mines, Virginia, the daughter of Dr. Eugene Knight and Eleanor Taylor Bowles, the sixth of their seven children. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Ellis Hammack; a son, John Knight Hammack; sisters, Dorothy Sarto and Ellen Knight Bowles; and brothers, Joel and Cabell Bowles. Prior to marrying on April 6, 1946, she attended Richmond Professional Institute. For over 15 years, Elise worked in the Richmond City School system at Chandler, Henderson and Albert Hill Middle Schools. Survivors include her children, Elissa Penn (Alan) of Glen Allen, Robert E. Hammack Jr. (Robert Moon) of Palm Springs, Calif., and Eleanor Harris (Jeff) of Goochland County; grandchildren, Melissa Penn, Emily Harris and Robert Clay Harris; sister, Sarah Kelly; and brother, Edward Bowles. She retired from the C&P Telephone Company where she was chief operator and supervisor. Edna Earl was a member of Saint Andrews United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, a member of the United Methodist Women, a member of Hudson Hornsby Circle, and a charter member of the Franklin Women's Club. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, the Rev. Clifton C. Blythe Jr. of Corapeake; three sons and daughters-in-law, C. Earl Blythe (Louise) of Franklin, Stephen E. Blythe (JoAnn) of Chesapeake, and Barry C. He worked at Cain Sloan Department Store in Nashville and for Thalhimers in Richmond. He was a member of Westhampton Masonic Lodge No. 302, AF&AM, the Westwood Club and the Mathews Yacht Club. Fred Latimer Hadsel, 94, of Lexington, Va., a retired United States Ambassador and Director of the George C. Marshall Foundation, died on Sunday, April 11, 2010, at his home. He had lived in Lexington since 1974. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Winifred Nelson Hadsel, in 2009. He was born on March 11, 1916, in Oxford, Ohio, the son of the late Fred Latimer Hadsel and Mary Perine Hadsel. He earned his undergraduate degree (Phi Beta Kappa) at Miami University where his father was a professor of Latin. He held a master's degree in history and international relations from Clark University in Massachusetts and a doctoral degree in European history from the University of Chicago. He joined the Department of State in 1946, later entering the Foreign Service. He served as First Secretary for African Affairs in London, Deputy Chief of Mission in Ethiopia, Ambassador in Somalia and Ambassador in Ghana, retiring in 1974. He was Director of the George Marshall Foundation from 1974 to 1985. He is survived by his three daughters, Christine Hadsel, of Burlington, Vt., Winifred "Kit" Hadsel Huffman, of Lexington, and Jane Hadsel Spooner, of London, England; and six grandchildren. Gene Stuart Matthis ABINGDON, Va. Gene Stuart Matthis died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, April 12, 2010, in the Bristol Re gional Medical Center following a short illness. He was 81. Gene was born in Harlan, Ky., in 1928, the youngest of eight children. He graduated from the University of Kentucky School of Mining Engineering and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He had a distinguished career in the coal industry working for Princess Elkhorn Coal Company, Island Creek and others before retiring as president of Pittston Coal Company. It was in his retirement, however, that he found his true vocation of service. An active member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, Abingdon Kiwanis, the Washington County Historical Society, Boy Scouts, Sons of the American Revolution and other civic organizations, Gene volunteered countless hours on dozens of community projects such as the Virginia Creeper Trail, the Sinking Spring Cemetery and the Penn House. Gene Matthis had a tremendous love of life and learning. He researched local and family history, played bridge, learned to speak German and always kept active and involved. Gene was a master woodworker, making beautiful furniture for his friends and family. He loved sports, especially Bristol White Sox baseball and Kentucky basketball. He was cherished and admired by so many as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Gene Matthis is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 58 years, Jane Ellen Tye "Jet" Matthis of Abingdon and formerly of Harlan; three children, Susan Johnson and husband Gary of Richwood, W.Va., Sarah Vandegrift and husband Rob of Georgetown, Ky., and Gene Stuart Matthis II and wife Judy of Charlotte, N.C. Other survivors include a brother, Bill Matthis of Litchfield, Ill.; two sisters, Ruth Stifel of Toledo, Ohio, and Rose Parsons of Gainesville, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was a member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, was a deacon, a member of the Sanctuary Choir, and former finance committee chairman. Mr. Whiteside was a naval veteran of World War II., He graduated from William Fleming High School (where he was senior class president) and was also a graduate of Roanoke College (where he served as president of the student body). Harry graduated from the University of Indiana Savings and Loan Graduate School. He was the former president of First Federal Savings and Loan Association, the former vice-president of Charter Federal Savings and Loan, and a past chairman of the Virginia Savings and Loan League., Mr. Whiteside was a past president of the Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center, a past president of the Backbone Club of the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce, and a past chairman of the Roanoke Valley United Way. Harry was a past president of the Golden Colonels of William Fleming High School. He was a member (since 1964) and past president of the Cosmopolitan Club of Roanoke, and was a leader of the club in organizing the annual Cosmopolitan Track Meet beginning in 1966. Mr. Whiteside served 28 years as a football official, and was a past secretary of the Western Virginia Football Officials Association., Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Rebecca "Becky" M. Whiteside, of Roanoke; three children and their spouses, Katherine and Dean Anderson, of Garrison, N.Y., Harry W. III and Joan Whiteside, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Tom and Kate Whiteside, of Durham, N.C.; a brother and his wife, Bob and Carol Whiteside, of Roanoke; two stepchildren and their spouses, Sue and Les Saunders, of Cary, N.C., and David and Ann Watson Irvin, of Richmond; and 13 grandchildren, Micah Hales, August Hales, Emily Whiteside McCoy, Grace Whiteside, Ben Whiteside, Ripley Whiteside, Alice Whiteside, Phoebe Dodge, Elizabeth Hartley, Matthew Hartley, Ben Saunders, Taylor Irvin, and Jack Irvin., A memorial service will be conducted 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, from Virginia Heights Baptist Church with the Reverend C. Nelson Harris officiating. Interment will be private. Mrs. Bales was a retired employee of the Celanese Corporation in Narrows and also work as a Sales Clerk and Bookkeeper at the Ingram Furniture Store in Pearisburg for over 50 years and was a special friend and caregiver to Edith Ingram of Riverview Nursing Home. She was a member of the Red Sulphur Springs Methodist Church and in the last few years attended the Providence Methodist Church in Wilburn Valley. TODD, Capt. John E., USA (Ret.), World War II, Korea and Vietnam veteran, passed away suddenly at Augusta Health. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jessie F. Todd; two sons, John E. Todd Jr. and Jeffrey S. Todd; two daughters, Cheryl J. Todd and Michell L. Todd; and deceased daughter, Darcel A. Todd; two granddaughters, Jessica L. Halterman and Emerald L. Halterman. John E. Todd was a man of great integrity, strength and high character to all who knew him and in everything he did. He was a blessing to those around him, modeling the love and unconditional acceptance of Christ. Capt. Todd's Air Corps, Army Air Corps, Air Force and Army distinguished career spanned 22 years with the following assignments: World War II B-17 Crew Gunner, Korea 508th RCT (ABN) 27th Infantry Regiment/25th Div-Ranger, 77th Special Forces (ABN), activated 1st Special Forces Group (ABN) Okinawa, Malaya British Far East Land Forces Guerilla Warfare, Korea Special Forces Senior Advisor to ROK 1st Special Forces Group (ABN), Taiwan Special Forces, Senior Special Forces Advisor (CIA-TS) Vietnam-Spl Vn Opn's, Senior Special Forces Advisor Airborne Training to Hawaii SF Detachment, Taiwan Joint Operations with Chinese/U.S. Forces, and completed his Army career in February 1964. During his military career he found time to be a Black Belt Karate/Judo expert and was an active National Rifle Association Instructor. Capt. John E. Todd, USA (Ret.) pursued his love of higher education by earning a B.S. Degree from the University of Maryland in 1965. He was a Government/ Math teacher and assistant football coach at Riverheads High School. John was also a seventh grade elementary school assistant principal. Continuing to pursue higher education he earned a Master's in Education (Special ED) and a Doctoral Degree (Education Specialist) from the University of Virginia. From there John was the superintendent of Virginia Dept. of Mental Health and Mental Retardation staff for the largest unit in the state. Due to his military-connected disabilities he had to resign from that position. John's later years were devoted to his farm and love of his cows. He is dearly loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed by his family, fellow soldiers and friends. He was a true patriot who was devoted to serving his country. Services with Full Military Honors will be held 9 a.m. Friday, April 30, 2010, at Arlington National Cemetery. Mr. John Thomas Pace, 87, of Stuart, Va., passed away Monday, April 12, 2010, at the V.A. Medical Center in Salem. He was born in Patrick County on December 17, 1922, to the late John Henry Pace and Sarah Moss Pace Boles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Hallie Harris, Lillie Scott and Grace Hodges. Mr. Pace was retired from the Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles, and had attended Creasey's Chapel United Methodist Church. He had served in the United State Army Air Force during World War II in the European Theater from 1943 to 1946. While there, he participated in the Invasion of Normandy. John Zigler

ZIGLER, John Hiram, a resident of the Bridgewater Retirement Community, died Tuesday, April 13, 2010 after a short illness. He was 94. The son of the Rev. Isaac N. Zigler and Mattie Roller Zigler, he was born on the Zigler homestead near Broadway, Va., and reared at Belmont in Spotsylvania County. He is survived by his wife, Hardenia Click Zigler; his brother, Jacob S. Zigler of Bridgewater; and brother-in-law, Dr. G. Wayne Glick of Lancaster, Pa. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nanci June Zigler; and his sister, Barbara Zigler Glick. Mr. Zigler graduated from Bridgewater College in 1939 and went on to do graduate work at Purdue University, Ohio State University, Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia Tech. He taught math, science and vocational agriculture in the public schools of Spotsylvania and Lunenburg counties before joining the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation in 1955. He served as field services director for the Farm Bureau in Southside Virginia, then moved to the Richmond office where he worked in various posts, including editor of the Virginia Farm Bureau News and as staff advisor for local government and natural resources. He retired in 1978 and moved to Weyers Cave, the birthplace of his wife, Hardenia. In his early years of retirement, he was retained by the Farm Bureau to write a history of the Federation, which was published in 1982. Active in public affairs, Mr. Zigler was appointed by Gov. Mills E. Godwin as a representative for agriculture on the Emergency Resources Management Commission and he was a founding member of the committee that organized the Conservation Council of Virginia. He served twice as a member of the Virginia Legislative Advisory Council. An active churchman, he was a certified lay speaker in the Farmville District of the United Methodist Church. He taught adult Bible classes for many years, including at Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren in Weyers Cave, where he has been a member since 1978. Mr. Zigler was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer. He was a member of the Soil Conservation Society of America and a lifelong member of Ruritan National. Leonard Lee Roy (Pepper) Hendricks

Leonard Lee Roy (Pepper) Hendricks, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Monday April 5, 2010, at his residence. Leonard was born and raised in Arcadia in Botetourt County then moving to Roanoke. Leonard was a disabled veteran of the United States Navy. He served in Vietnam then ended his service at the U.S. Naval Station in San Francisco, Calif. Leonard will be sadly missed by all that knew him but will never be forgotten. He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Griffin, of Norfolk, Va.; and his five grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Teddy Hendricks; two sisters, Barbara Wells and Faye Ferguson; and his devoted friend, Doris. His entire family and devoted friends simply knew him as "Pepper." His memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2010, at First Christian Church located on Church Street in Roanoke, Va. The Rev. Jim Rivers will preside. Lillian Grant Baker Ellison Greer, 99, formerly of Roanoke County, Va., passed away on Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Born in Frostburg, Md., she was the daughter of the late Earl Clarkson and Blanche Hansel Baker. She is predeceased by her husband of six years, Carl Adolf Ellison, died 1940, the father of her two sons; and by her husband of 65 years, Luther Edward Greer, died 2006; a granddaughter, Kendall Paige Ellison; grandson, Wesley French Ellison; and three brothers, John Jacob Baker, Samuel Edward Baker, and Gene Albert Graybill., She is survived by two sons, Rev. Dr. Kenneth Z. Ellison and wife, Mary, of Marietta, Ga., and Ronald E. Ellison and wife, Patricia, of Norfolk, Va.; four grandchildren, Charles Shuman, Brent Ellison, Peter Ellison and Melissa Ellison Franzmeier; nine great-grandchildren, Jarrod, Charles Jr. and Landis Shuman, Sarah and Caroline Ellison, Brenna, Tressa, Carissa and Reegan Franzmeier; one great-great-granddaughter, Syri Kayden Shuman; seven nieces; and eight nephews., Lillian was a pre-World War II and early World War II era employee of the American Viscose Corporation. After her husband's entry into military service in 1945, she was employed by Pugh's Department Store until 1946. She entered the work force again in the early 50s with Kenrose Manufacturing Company as an inspector, and later with the Hal-Mode Corporation from which she retired. She and her husband made their home in Southeast Roanoke County (RFD#6/Mayflower Hills/Rutrough Road) from 1948 until his death in 2006. They were both long-time members of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, and developed friendships that were a large part of their lives. She was also known as "T" to her nieces and nephews., Lillian was known as a good cook with boundless energy and a sweet and ready smile. She looked forward to the Christmas season for this was a time for the baking of her delicious fruitcakes and the making of Boiled Plum Pudding which she learned from her German mother. There was always room for a guest or neighbor at her table. She will be sorely missed by family and friends, and neighbors., The family wishes to express our love and gratitude to all who helped and supported Dad as Mother began a losing battle with Dementia. The children of Blanch and Harry Young (Dad's sister and her husband) for their loving care and attention to both Mother and Dad, and Julius and Eleanor Shepheard, the excellent, caring and compassionate staff at Snyder's Nursing Home, Salem, Va., for their care of Mother since October 2008. Most importantly to dearest Anita and Mike Baker, who were our "eyes and ears" since we live away from Roanoke., Arrangements are under the care and direction of Oakey's Vinton Chapel, where the family will receive friends on Thursday, April 15, 2010, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Lloyd John Klapperich

Lloyd John Klapperich, 73, of Roanoke, Va., was a free-thinker who brought humor, insight, and unconventional vision to every facet of his life. Lloyd died in the arms of his loving wife, Margaret, on April 7, 2010, in Roanoke after a long illness. Born in Melrose, Minn., he served in the United States Army for three years in the 1950s before graduating from St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn., in 1960. Lloyd was active in the civil rights movement, making a trip to Selma, Ala., to register voters, and was present at the Lincoln Memorial when Martin Luther King gave his "I Have a Dream" speech., He married Margaret Ochoa in 1968, living in Staunton for many years while Lloyd worked as a claims adjuster for Ohio Casualty and they reared their two sons. Lloyd was instrumental in establishing the Blue Ridge Chapter of the American Society of Dowsers in the Shenandoah Valley and served as its first president., In retirement, he spent many hours studying and editing the "Lessons of Enlightenment," a non-dogmatic resource for truth seekers available online at, . Lloyd had a boundless capacity to find humor in the mundane---subtle, wry, yet belly-aching laugh funny., He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two sons, Kerry of Charlottesville, and Kevin of Richmond; a sister, Bernice Hatch, of Washington; and a niece, Jill Guth, of Minnesota, who has been like a daughter to him; as well as many nephews and nieces. Mary Emma H. H. Eason KILL DEVIL HILLS - Mary Emma "Polly" Hancock Harris Eason departed this life to be with the Lord April 12, 2010 following a lengthy illness. She was born in Raleigh, N.C., on Jan. 16, 1925. She spent her teen years in Alta Vista, Va., where she graduated from Alta Vista High School. Her family then moved to Norfolk where she spent the majority of her adult life. Mary worked for the C&P Telephone Company for more than 40 years and retired prior to moving to the Outer Banks. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dee Murr Harris Jr. and her parents, Evelyn and Frank Gregory. Mary is survived by her daughter, Gail Harris Wilson and husband Ron Wilson of Amelia, Va. Polly is also survived by her brother, John D. Hancock Jr. and sister-in-law, Lucille Hancock of Burlington, N.C. Her grandchildren, Alison King and husband Nathan of Midlothian, Va., Colleen Anderson of Virginia Beach and Grace Wilson of Amelia will miss her. She is also survived by a grandson, Michael Lynam of Charleston, S.C. Also missing "Sugar" will be her great-grandchildren, Hannah, Emily, and Julia King, Harris and Hylton Lynam, Donald and Shawna Anderson, and Kayla Morgan. Additional survivors include a niece, Judy Clary of Burlington; a nephew, John Hancock of Dallas, Texas; her special friend, Suat Basaran; and her much loved dog, Happy. The funeral will be held Friday, April 17, at Ocean View Baptist Church on the Beach Road in Kill Devil Hills at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends at church one hour prior to services. The eulogist will be Pastor Steve Seigrist. Interment will take place following the funeral at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk with the Rev. James Colvin officiating. Mary Jane was a school teacher with the Suffolk Public Schools where she taught for more than 30 years. She was a very active member of Somerton United Methodist Church and was a former Sunday school teacher. Survivors include her sons, Thomas V. Arthur II and wife Jane, Henry B. Arthur Jr. and wife Linda, John E. Arthur and wife Brenda, all of Suffolk; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Nellie C. Borum of Rice, Va., Macie C. Maxwell Hedgepeth PORTSMOUTH - Maxwell Levi "Mac" Hedgepeth, 81, left this earth on April 12, 2010 to be with his Lord and Savior after a full and productive life, but recently after a long battle with many serious health problems. Mac was born in Halifax County, North Carolina on Jan. 31, 1929, to the late Aaron A. and Ora Mabel Hedgepeth, their seventh child. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Albert Hedgepeth and Calvin Hedgepeth; and three sisters, Irene Hux, Thearie Hedgepeth and Lee McAlpine. He served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1951 - 1953. He worked hard all his life to provide for his family including many years of service with Seaboard Railroad, Newport News Shipbuilding and then 21 years with Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he retired as a pipefitter foreman. He spent 21 years in retirement doing the things he really loved, spending time with his family especially his grandchildren, traveling with family and friends, camping, playing cards and "carrying on." He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 49 years, Edith, who was always by his side through sickness and in health; two sons, Stephen Hedgepeth and his wife Susan and Phillip Hedgepeth and girlfriend Shannan St. Hilaire; a sister, Mary Ellen Hundley; four grandsons, Jacob Simmons, Phillip Simmons, Aiden Hedgepeth and Ty Hedgepeth; a granddaughter, Skylar Hedgepeth; a sister- in-law, Lucy Hedgepeth; a brother-in-law, Charlie McAlpine; many nieces, nephews and friends. The family wishes to thank Mrs. Lorrie Hagan who lovingly cared for and befriended Mac during his recent illness as well as his nurses at Heartland Home Health Care, Ms. Kelly Crutchfield and Ms. Ruthie Wilson. The family also wishes to thank Pastor Jim Woodland and the members of Grove Park Baptist Church who have been very faithful and truly the "Hands and Feet of Christ," and Pastor Don Rhoton and members of Smithfield Baptist Church who adopted Mac and Edith in their church family. Though his recent days have been mired in illness and fighting to recover to spend time with family and friends, his life and love were much bigger than his illness. Born in Chicago, Ill., to the late Florence and Thomas Ryan, she was the youngest of six children. Nancy served in the U.S. Naval Air Corps as a young woman. She married the love of her life, Cecil Eugene Decker, on Sept. 8, 1951 and was devoted to the care and keeping of family, friends and a welcoming home full of rich fellowship and laughter. Nancy will be remembered for her brave, independent and unselfish character, her infectious love of books, learning and engaging conversation and as a gifted artist how she appreciated and created beauty in all that she touched. Sweet memories will linger forever as we cherish these gifts from our beautiful mother, grandmother and buddy. Nancy is survived by her three sons, Carl E. Decker of Norfolk, Thomas M. Among her many accomplishments was her charter membership of the VA Press Women's Association as well as being a prodigious winner of the Virginia and National Press Association Award for writing and editing. She was also a board member of the Miss Virginia Pageant as well as a huge supporter of the Battered Women's Shelter in Roanoke. In her spare time she enjoyed rose gardening, playing bridge, and reading. Preceding her in death were her parents, David O. and Mary Z. Vecellio; and sister, Sylvia V. Williams. The gates of Heaven will be flying open to welcome one of its angels home as Rebecca Frances Canode Underwood triumphs over her 2½ year battle against cancer and is received into the arms of Jesus and her beloved husband, Kermit. It is hard to put into words the impact she has had on family, friends and loved ones during her life. Fox and Arie Bell Straight Fox., She was married to Marlin Alltop and Wilbur Young, who both preceded her in death., Retha was a long-time resident of Lyndhurst, where she raised her family as well as many neighborhood children. Her home was always open with plenty to eat. She enjoyed working as a Mary Kay Consultant and was a former employee of Roses Department Store in Waynesboro. She was a member of the Whitehill Church of the Brethren in Stuarts Draft and attended Eden United Methodist Church in Hot Springs. Before her health declined, she enjoyed attending activities with the Bath County Senior Citizens and the Red Hats Society., She is survived by a five children, Duane Alltop of Staunton, Debbie Hite Shifflett and her husband, Gary, of Waynesboro, Virginia, Diana Via and her husband, Ronnie, of Grottoes, Virginia, John Young and his wife, Debbie, of Hot Springs, Joe Young and his wife, Kim, of Stuarts Draft, Virginia; three stepchildren, Clyde Young and his wife, Connie of Greenville, Virginia, Jarry Young and his wife, Shirley of Stuarts Draft and David Young and his wife, Teresa Stuarts Draft; two brothers, Jasper Newton Fox and James Edward Fox; two sisters, Mary DeEtta Barton and Betty Jane Honeycutt; 12 grandchildren, five great- grandchildren. He was the pastor of the First Union Baptist Church of Mechanisville for over 50 years and was respected throughout Hanover Co. and the Greater Richmond Metropolitian area as a Godly man. He was man of complete commitment, to him religion was not just something preached from the pulpit on Sunday morning it was the reality of day to day living and we take time to remember this honorable and respected pastor. Rev. Giles sat a standard that only a few attempt to meet. He exemplified the traits of a Godly man as set forth in the Gospel Text. He is solely missed and loved and admired. Robert M. Brudzinski, 62, of Roanoke, Va., died on Monday, April 12, 2010. He is preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Marie Brudzinski. Bob was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa.. In 1969 he graduated from Drexel University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, graduated from Penn State University in 1973 with a MS Degree in Engineering, and then graduated from the University of Chicago in 1978 with an MBA in Marketing and Finance. His career as a business executive took him many places including Pennsylvania, Illinois, Wisconsin and Virginia. He loved to golf and run and completed two marathons. Survivors include his wife of nearly 40 years, Janice; two sons, Drs. Michael Brudzinski and wife, Erika, of Cincinnati, and Christopher Brudzinski, of Chicago. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2010, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church with Msgr. Thomas Miller officiating. Robert Miller "Windy" Cross KINGSPORT, Tenn. Robert Miller "Windy" Cross, 85, passed away Thursday, April 8, 2010. Mr. Cross was born on June 12, 1924, in Kingsport. He graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School and attended the University of Georgia, University of South Carolina, UT-Martin before graduating from East Tennessee State University. While at ETSU, he helped form and was a member of the first ETSU golf team. He served his country as a distinguished Navy pilot in both World War II and the Korean War. At the end of the war, Mr. Cross achieved the rank of lieutenant commander serving as a flight instructor at Pensacola Naval Air Station. Following his service career, Mr. Cross became a professional golfer playing on the PGA tour from 1954-1956 and was the head golf professional at Bristol Country Club before resuming his career as a tour professional from 1967-1969. He then enjoyed a successful career working for EJ Smith and Sons selling golf equipment throughout the southeast. Upon his retirement, Mr. Cross cherished giving golf lessons around the Tri-Cities area. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nelle Ring Cross; parents, E.M. Cross Sr. and Mamie Othella Mottern Cross; and brothers, E.M. Cross Jr. and Harold Cross. Mr. Cross is survived by his son, Bart Cross and daughter-in-law, Kim Cross; grandchildren, Hunter and Cooper Cross. She held memberships in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, a Charter Member of The Links, Inc. and a member of The Pinochle Bugs. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Isle Jones, of Texas., Ruth enjoyed nurturing her flower gardens, she loved traveling with her husband and family, bird watching and reading while relaxing by the pool. But most of all Ruth loved spending time with her family and friends. Ruth worked at National Legal Research Group for 30 years before retiring in January 2009., Ruth leaves behind her loving and devoted husband, Warren H. Tingley; her two sons, Derrick G. Morris and his wife, B.J., of Charlottesville, and Jeffrey Morris of Ruckersville; and one sister, Hildegard Kraus of Indiana. Shae M. Buchanan VIRGINIA BEACH - Shae Matthew Buchanan, 23, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 10, 2010. Shae's family is so proud of his positive attitude and vibrant spirit while battling cancer. Shae was known for his beautiful smile and adorable dimples that could light up any room. He truly embodied the phrase, "Live each day as if it's your last." He will be remembered for helping to create so many wonderful and unique memories. Shae was such a joy to be around with an engaging personality that could brighten the darkest of days. His strength was indescribable and was an absolute shining star in life's galaxy. He left his mark on all the people who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by his mother, his one true love Christi Buchanan; his best friend and brother, Michael Buchanan; his father, Fernandez Buchanan; and his half siblings, Shelby and Bobby Buchanan. Shae was blessed with many aunts, uncles and cousins. Shae was a graduate of Ocean Lakes High School in 2004 where his love of cheerleading brought a sparkle to his eye. But it was the love of his horse Texas that stole his heart. Shae's passion for working with children was a daily affirmation. He worked as an assistant director at the Toddler Station Preschool where he spent his days shaping the young minds of the children he worked with. In addition, Shae was a member of Fame All-stars and the Atlantic Saddle Club. The Buchanan family would like to thank everyone that supported and prayed for Shae. Your unconditional love and support in Shae's last days will never be forgotten. A special thanks to those people who visited and sat with Shae during his final days helping to make them as pleasant as possible. She also was a Girl Scout leader and had a special place in her heart for animals and caring for family and friends. She was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Harper. She is survived by her son, Michael J. Kalichman and his wife Martha Kalichman of Richmond, Va.; her daughter, Nettie Kalichman and her husband, James Stanfield of Knotts Island, N.C.; four grandchildren, Joshua Kalichman of Bowling Green, Ohio, Sarah Kalichman of Harrisonburg, Va., Christina Stanfield of Carlisle, Pa., and Lonnie Jarvis of Luray, Va. Sylvia was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was an active member of Temple Emanuel in Virginia Beach, where she was involved in the Sisterhood and enjoyed participating in the choral group in previous years. In the 1990s, she participated with her husband in the city, state, and national Senior Olympics and won medals in basketball and bowling. In past years she and her husband also enjoyed ballroom dancing. In recent years she enjoyed playing mahjong and spending time with her dear friends in the Sunday Brunch Bunch. A graveside service will be conducted Friday, April 16, at 2 p.m. in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, King David Gardens Section, by Rabbi Howard Mandell. Thomas (Tom, TJ) Jones, 62, of Roanoke, Va., entered into his eternal resting place on April 8, 2010. Tom, a native of Norfolk, Va., was born on August 3, 1947, to the late Mr. Percy W. and Tempie Jones. He was also preceded in death by two sons; one grandson; and six siblings. Tom was educated in the Norfolk, Va., public school system where he was recognized as an outstanding football player and received numerous athletic awards. Afterwards, he entered into the United States Army and was honorably discharged. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a past Post Quartermaster of VFW #1444. He attended National Business College and received his Associate Degree in Accounting. His employment included OIC Incorporated and the VA Water Project. He leaves to mourn and rejoice his memories his wife, Joyce "Babycakes" Jones, as he affectionately called her; daughters, Natasha and Roshawn Jones, of Roanoke, and Monique Pitts, of Norfolk; son, Cleavon Wynn, of Norfolk; and sisters, Leona Winfield, Patsy Sawyer and Jaddie Williams, of Norfolk. He also leaves an abundant number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Two of his special caregivers were granddaughters, Signe' "Duffy" Jones and Jamyah "Kinley" Jones. Tommy graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1987, was a truck driver for 13 years, loved his horses and spending time with his horseback riding friends and family. HOGAN, Thomas P., died Tuesday, April 6, 2010 in Brandermill Wood Health Care Center, Midlothian, Va. His wife is the former Maurita Vanston Hogan. The couple had been married for 51 years. Born September 16, 1931 in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Joseph and Cora Depew Hogan; a graduate of the University of Scranton and an Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. Prior to retirement, Tom was an insurance administrator and executive for several companies for over 35 years. His last position was a director at MetLife in East Hanover, N.J. and New York, N.Y. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, grandfather and uncle who will be truly missed. They were truly blessed with five sons and one daughter, James Hogan and Abby, Paul Hogan and Amy, Eileen Tatum and Robert, Michael Hogan and Sasha, William Hogan and Ann Siemering, John Hogan and Ken Cushine; one brother, James; and sister-in-law, Catherine of Richardson, Texas; 14 grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mary Hogan, Ruth Holleran, Laura Vanston; 18 nieces and nephews; many cousins, including Mary Ann and Gene Scanlon of Midlothian, Va.; and other family and friends. Tommy Calvin Rankin Jr., 58, of Max Meadows, Va., passed away on Monday, April 12, 2010. He was born on April 1, 1952, and was preceded in death by his father, Thomas C. Rankin Sr.; a brother, Herbert Eugene Rankin; a sister, Judy Ann Rankin; and grandparents, George and Murdy Tetter and Robert and Myrtle Rankin. Tommy drag raced at Elk Creek and Motor Mile Raceway and was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He is survived by his wife, Patty F. Rankin, of the home; four daughters, Kayla R. Ward and Kevin D., of Max Meadows, Va., Jessica R. Hash and Travis B., of Independence, Va., Heather M. MARSHALL, Col. (Ret.) Wallace E. "Mike," 80, U.S.A.R., passed peacefully on Sunday, April 11, 2010. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Dorothy E. "Dot" Marshall; their children, Richard E. Marshall (Debbie), Dawn Marshall and Dianne Dowdy "Sweet-Pea"; two brothers, Pem Marshall (Beth) and Clyde Marshall (Marie); two grandchildren, Michael E. Marshall (Angela) and Nathan Dowdy Jr.; stepgrandchild, Matthew; one great-grandson, Zachary A. Marshall; stepgreat-grandchildren, Brandon, Anthony, Austin and Blake; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, William E. Marshall and Dora. Mike retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a Full Bird Colonel, and retired as a Director of the apprenticeship program with the Department of Labor and Industry of Virginia. He was also a brick mason by trade. He was a member of the Varina Lions Club, the Varina Masonic Lodge, the Light Infantry Blues, the Sandston Moose Lodge and the Ruritan Club. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 15 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Nelsen Funeral Home and Crematory, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue, where services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 16. Burial to follow with Military Honors in Washington Memorial Park.
