Alan B. Rader VIRGINIA BEACH - Alan Burl Rader, 61, a native of and former resident of Franklin, Va., was killed in a tragic hunting accident while doing what he loved best, the morning of Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Flag Tale Hunt Club near Drewryville, Va. He had been a respected member and former board member of the club for 20 years. Alan, who was most recently residing with his brother and sister-in-law, Sid and Vicki Rader, was the son of the late Ecil Burl and Ann Elizabeth Turner Rader of Franklin. Alan had most recently retired from the United States Postal Service where he had worked in Monroe, La., and Virginia Beach. He was a 1966 graduate of Franklin High School and attended Chowan Junior College, where he received an associate's degree in 1969. While at Chowan, Alan pitched for the school's baseball team, a continuation of his love for the sport in high school. He then entered the U.S. Air Force and served tours of duty in remote Alaska and Turkey. Upon leaving the Air Force with the rank of technical staff sergeant in December of 1980, he completed his bachelor's degree in liberal arts at Northeast Louisiana University in 1982. Before joining the postal service, he worked several years for IBM as a service technician. In 1991, he received a transfer with the postal service to relocate to Virginia Beach to be near his parents, who were in declining health. Alan was an avid hunter, having learned to practice and enjoy the sport, tutored and nurtured by his father, Ecil, on many hunting trips to the Bronco Rod and Hunt Club in Franklin. Alan also enjoyed the sport of fishing and loved the thrill of the catch. He leaves behind many citation bass and hunting trophies to document his love for these sports. Alan had just completed a water safety course with his brother so that the two could begin enjoying the salt water boat that they had recently purchased together. Alan is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kristy and James Meadows and their three daughters, Megan, Samantha and Olivia of Seattle, Wash.; and his son, Adam Rader of Los Angeles. Alan was preceded in death by his infant son, Chad Alan Rader. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Sid "Sidney" and Vicki Rader, their daughter, Jennifer, and son-in-law, Dylan Dausch, their daughters Alyssa and Camille of Fairfax County, Virginia, their son John McKain and his fiancé Josie Quinn of Los Angeles; and Vicki's mother, Doris Cunningham of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by a half sister, Ramona Sawyer and her children and grandchildren of Plymouth, N.C., and Charlestown, S.C., as well as his half sister-in-law, Peggy Rader, also of Plymouth. He was preceded in death by his half brother, Howard Rader, formerly of West Virginia and Plymouth. Alan is also survived by numerous cousins in Franklin and a vast array of friends in the Virginia Beach and Franklin area. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 1, in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Jim Wilkes officiating. Interment will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and suggests memorials be made to Meals on Wheels of Virginia Beach, 3750 Sentara Way, Virginia Beach, VA 23452. Condolences may be sent to the Rader family at www.wrightfuneralhome.org or posted to Sid Rader's wall on Facebook. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Joey Holland, one of Alan's closest friends, who was at the scene of the accident and administered first aid, comfort, and support to Alan at the time of his passing. |

Angela Boglioli Oppizzi VIRGINIA BEACH - Angela Boglioli Oppizzi died April 23, 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Paul Boglioli; her husband, Carlo "Charlie" Oppizzi; and son-in-law, Jesus Igareda. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Igareda and Dorine Laskowski, son-in-law Paul Laskowski, grandchildren Thad and Kara Laskowski and many friends. Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Angela was a woman who possessed a caring heart, brilliant mind and genuine concern for all those whom she met. She was both a devoted wife and mother who made her home on oasis of love and happiness for her family and a career woman as well. Her wish was to attend college but since she was a Depression Era child she was forced to enter the work force and help support her family. She resolved to educate herself and was a voracious reader her entire life. She was very well versed in history, political science, literature, art and music. She had studied Latin and throughout her life re-read the great works of literature in the original Latin. Her command of the English language was superb and she could finish the New York Times Crossword Puzzle at record speed. She loved poetry and composed beautiful, moving poems. She was an honor graduate of Central Commercial High School, a distinguished school that prepared young women for the business world. Angela held many jobs over her lifetime. She was the private secretary to the program director of Mutual Broadcasting Network (NYC) for more than 12 years. She was fluent in many dialects of Italian and subbed as translator for the network during World War II. She took time off from her career to be there for her two daughters during their early years but later reentered the work force. For 20 years she was secretary to several chiefs of staff at State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. After moving to Virginia, she was a secretary for Norfolk Public Schools. Angela loved and excelled at all her jobs. She was one of those rare individuals who posses a natural talent, exceptional skill and tireless devotion. She was the epitome of a dedicated professional. Angela was a lady in every sense of the term. Her values, dress, speech and manner mirrored those qualities that have become rare in today's world. A devout Catholic, she was deeply religious with a close affinity to God. She always placed her life in God's hands. Her total trust in God allowed her to show outstanding courage in the face of any crisis. She was devoted to the Blessed Mother, St. Theresa and St. Jude. Angela lived her life with love, kindness and respect for people and animals. Her house was always home to the many stray dogs and cats she welcomed into her heart and home. She saw goodness in everyone she met and spent her life praying for and helping all who crossed her path. She was truly the rock of her family and a great wife, mother and grandmother. By quiet example, she taught her family the true meaning of total love, devotion, self sacrifice, and devout faith in God. She always put others first, never complained and extended love to all she met. Her love, thoughtfulness, warmth, kindness, care and wit can never be replaced. Angela was devastated by the death of Charlie, her beloved husband of 64 years. Her family takes great comfort in the knowledge she is again dancing with her Charlie in the presence God. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to a local animal shelter or to the Comboni Missionaries, 1307 Lakeside Ave., Richmond, VA 23228. Frances W. Dennis VIRGINIA BEACH - Frances W. Dennis, 91, died peacefully early in the morn- ing of April 24, 2010 holding the hands of her daughter and grand- daughter. Frances is survived by her daughters, Kathy Baise, Sue Whitaker and Diane Thompson, their spouses, her sister, Jean Hasten, her grandchildren, Amanda Baise, Jennifer Aronstein, Robin Sampaga, and Roy Whitaker, their spouses, and numerous great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Everyone loved Grandma Dennis. Alzheimer's disease claimed her life but not her spirit. She had a life worth living. She understood the value of hard work, as evidenced by her joy in caring for others, creating wonderful gardens, and never thinking any task was too hard to tackle. Her home was cozy and inviting. There was always candy in the candy dish. She grew up in Norfolk as one of six children. At 17 she married the one love of her life, Nelson Dennis. They had 60 years together. Nelson never left her without a goodbye kiss. In 1962, Frances graduated with the first class of nurses at Norfolk General Hospital's School of Practical Nursing. She worked at the hospital and was described by her colleagues as "one of the fastest moving people in the hospital." The center of Frances and Nelson's life was Lynnhaven United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach. Everyone there had tasted her homemade rolls and pound cakes. Special appreciation goes to the staff of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Virginia Beach where Frances and her family were treated with love, respect and dignity. Heartland Hospice helped ease the pain of her last weeks of life. People of different faiths ministered to Frances as she left this world. She was surrounded by love. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at Lynnhaven United Methodist Church, 1033 Little Neck Road, Virginia Beach. Donations in the name of Frances Dennis may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association at 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502-4006. |

Kristina Mae Thomas, While God was preparing a place in Heaven, Kristina took the hands of her Angels and walked into his beautiful garden., Kristina Mae Thomas, born February 24, 1993, in Charlottesville, Virginia, entered eternal life at the home she shared with her "Mommy and My Dad," Carolyn A. and Wayne J. Chewning in Unionville, on Sunday, April 25, 2010., At the age of two, Kristina came to live with her aunt and uncle and remained there throughout her life. At four years of age, Kristina was diagnosed with inoperable AVMs in her brain, and though they caused her many problems and complications, she continued to live a very full and productive life., During her all too short life, Kristina made many friends and influenced many lives with her contagious smile and huge heart. Never complaining or asking, "Why me?" Kristina only wished for two important goals in her life. She wanted to go to Orange County High School, and she accomplished that in August 2007. She was a junior at her passing. Her second goal was made possible through the Make A Wish Foundation in January 2008, when she was flown to Nashville, Tennessee for a meet and greet with Alan Jackson, her favorite country music singer. While there, she also met and got autographs from Taylor Swift, Jason Michael Carroll and numerous Nascar drivers. It was a trip that she still talked about to everyone that would listen., Besides these wishes, Kristina was able to attend Camp Victory Junction in Randleman, North Carolina. This camp was founded in honor of Adam Petty, who lost his life in a tragic Nascar accident., Kristina was baptized at Antioch Baptist Church in Unionville, Virginia, on October 4, 2009, and was honored with many friends and family attending. Numerous gifts and cards were presented to her at this time. The Reverend Brian Harfst officiated. She was also participating member of the "Heaven's Messengers" Sunday School Class at Antioch., Besides Carolyn and Wayne Chewning, Kristina leaves to cherish her memory her twin sister, Kaitlyn Anne Thomas, who lived with her; also her sister, Ashly M. Dassler, and her brother, Joshua T. Dassler of Unionville., Michelle A. LeClair, Unionville, Danielle M. LeClair, Spotsylvania, Nicole T. Atkins of Louisa, April E. Marshall of Charlottesville, and their families were not only her cousins, but as she grew up, they became her "sisters." Her very special little cousin, Kadence Anne Lilly, became her best friend, constant companion, and playmate., Kristina was born to and survived by Tina M. Dassler and John E. Thomas Jr. and his wife, Theresa. She is also survived by two aunts and a uncle, Constance M. Day and Cynthia L. Sullivan of Montgomery, Alabama, and Randy Rollins of Florida, and their families. Also, her great-aunts, great- uncles, and cousins in Maine will miss her, as it was one of her favorite places to visit., Kristina also leaves her many cats and her three dogs, Dale, Dixie, and Max. Max is a Yorkie that was given to the twins before Christmas by members of the community as a therapy dog, and he certainly fulfilled that quest., Many family, close friends, teachers, and church family from Antioch Baptist Church in Unionville, visited with her throughout her illness. While Kristina will be greatly missed by all, she is now spending time walking, singing, and picking flowers with her grandparents, who preceded her into Heaven. Paternal grandparents were John and Annie M. Thomas of Montgomery, Alabama; and maternal grandparents, Homer and Helen Rollins of Unionville., A special thanks goes out to those who signed her caring bridge website and OCHS staff and faculty, all the numerous doctors and nurses from University of Virginia, Kluge Children's Rehab. Hospital and Hospice of the Rapidan. Very special thanks go out to Dr. Gregory O'Shanock of Richmond and Dr. Diane Pappas of Orange, and their staff that helped care for and love her. Without the comfort and reassurance from each of you, our journey would have been long and lonely. We will never forget you and know that you made Kristina's days full and happy., Kristina will live on through others, as she was a tissue donor with Life Net., A celebration of Kristina's life will be held 3 p.m. Friday, April, 30, 2010, at Johnson Funeral Home in Locust Grove, Virginia. A visitation will be held prior from 1:30 until 3 p.m. at the funeral home. The Reverend Brian Harfst of Antioch will conduct the service, with assistance from Denise Vogt., Memorial contributions may be made to the Make a Wish Foundation in Richmond, Virginia, University of Virginia Children's Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia, or the Hospice of the Rapidan in Culpeper, Virginia, in Kristina's name., The days may have been long and the nights short Kristina, but you will remain in our hearts forever. We love and cherish you and your spirit. Rest comfortably sweetheart. |
