Addington Katherine V. Addington, 78, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009 in Marion. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. James P. Addington, and parents, Roy and Mae Hamm. Survivors include daughters, Kathy Mae Addington and special friend, Doug Suits of Marion, and Connie Blake and husband, Gary, of Saltville; grandson, Will Blake of Saltville; sisters, Shirley Hess of Chilhowie, and Nancy Crigger of Saltville; brother, David Hamm of Saltville; special niece, Tammy Frye of Saltville; and several nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Michael R. Akers Jr. Michael Randolph Akers Jr., 48, of Max Meadows died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. A memorial service was held Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Floyd Dennis Williams officiating. Anderson, Henry

Anderson Henry Adford Anderson, 80, born April 8, 1929 in Saltville, died Aug. 28, 2009 at Friendship Retirement Home in Roanoke. He served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 31, 1951 to Dec. 23, 1952. He was stationed in Germany during his tour of duty. He was a faithful member of the Church of God of Prophesy in Saltville for many years before he moved to Roanoke due to declining health. He was a current member of the Church of God of Prophesy Faith Fellowship in Salem. He was a hardworking gentleman who was a friend to all he met. He enjoyed walking to Saltville several times a week to meet and talk with his friends. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Anderson, his mother, Mary Totten Anderson, two brothers, Charles Anderson and Franklin Anderson, and two sisters, Louella Anderson and Fannie Olinger. Survivors include five sisters, Helen Ford of Mt. Orab, Ohio, Dorothy Hall of Bristol, Delephine Coffer of Roanoke, Rose Anderson of Alexandria, and Pauline Perkins of Woodbridge; two brothers, George Anderson of Troy, Mont., and Roy Anderson of Wilmington, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville with Bishop Douglas Milliner officiating. Burial followed in the Ridgedale Cemetery with military rites. The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Online condolences maybe sent to, . D.R. Will was a 2005 graduate of Deep Run High School, where he played varsity baseball. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University. Michael J. Bedford VIRGINIA BEACH - Michael J. Bedford, 63, passed away quietly Aug. 30, 2009. He was born April 24, 1946, in Syracuse, N.Y., to the late Charles E. and Charlotte H. Bedford. Michael served his country in the United States Navy. It was in 1980 that Michael and his family moved from their Groton, Conn., home to his new duty station in Norfolk and retired as a CW04 in 1991. Michael was a member of VFW Post 4809 in Norfolk and the Wednesday night Cribbage group. He enjoyed fishing, was a master woodworker and a die-hard Tony Stewart NASCAR fan. Michael was a devoted husband, father, grandfather; and friend to many. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Elaine "Suzi" Bedford; daughters, Dawn Marie Mathis and husband Kevin of Las Vegas, Nev., Sandra Bedford Harrah and husband Matthew of Suffolk, and Janice Michelle Hughes and husband Brad of Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren, Summer and Ty Mathis, Richard and Andrew Harrah and Michael and Mollie Hughes; aunt, Jane Castello Barlow of Catonsville, Md.; nephew and partner-in-crime, Charles Bedford of Norfolk; numerous nieces, nephews, children and grandchildren of the heart and a harem of quilters. A celebration of life was held Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009, at his nephew, Chuck Bedford's home on Willoughby Spit. Burial at sea will be at a later date. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Boone. Buchanan III, Harry W.

Harry W. Buchanan III MILFORD, Pa. - After a courageous battle against cancer, at the age of 85, Harry Winters Buchanan III passed away Friday, Aug. 28, 2009. in Bethlehem, Pa., surrounded by his family. Mr. Buchanan was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Nov. 9, 1923, to Harry W. Buchanan II and Eugenie M. Buchanan (nee O'Brien). After serving with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II, he graduated from the Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in chemical engineering. Later, as a Sloan Fellow, he earned a masters in management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Buchanan began his professional career in New York at Metal and Thermit Corporation, where he rose to the position of executive vice president. In 1966, he left to become president and Chairman of the Board of the Virginia Chemicals Corporation in Portsmouth, Va. There he expanded the firm's scope of products and markets, developing an array of specialty industrial chemicals, and establishing new operations in Japan, England, and continental Europe. In early 1980s he engineered the sale of Virginia Chemicals to the Celanese Corporation, and eventually retired from Hoescht-Celanese as a vice president. Mr. Buchanan had served as a director of the Virginia Manufacturers Association, the Chemical Manufacturers Association, the United Virginia Bank Corporation and Crompton & Knowles. He also served on the boards of advisors to the University of Richmond and the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia. In New York City, he was a member of the Union League Club, the Sky Club and the Chemist Club, where he was the chairman of the House Committee. He was also a member of the Commonwealth Club in Richmond, Va., and the Augusta National Golf Club. Mr. Buchanan was among the fifth generation of his family to live on the property at Cliff Park in Milford, Pa. For more than 50 years, he managed and improved the facilities of Cliff Park Inn and Golf Course, a business which had been started by his grandmother in 1913. Working through the Conservation Fund, Mr. Buchanan arranged for Cliff Park to be acquired by the National Park Service in 2003 as part of the Tocks Island National Recreation Area, with the understanding that the land and the golf course will remain undeveloped and open to the public. Mr. Buchanan was married for 58 years to the former Barbara Combes of Larchmont, N.Y. He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife, their six children: sons, Harry Winters IV, M.D. of Allentown, Pa., Bruce Stewart and his wife Laura of New York City and Brien Combes and his wife Carol-Ann of Milford; daughters, Cathleen Joan and her husband Anthony Barri, M.D. of Old Lyme, Conn., Virginia Gail of Middletown, N.J., and Mary Ann and her husband Pete of Purcellville, Va.; and 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Gene Ann Buchanan Titus; his cousin, Theodore Stewart Buchanan; his grandson, Luke Lawson Buchanan; and his friend and colleague, Walter William MacGregor. A viewing will be held Friday, Sept. 4, at Cliff Park from 6 to 8 p.m. and the funeral will be held at St. Patrick's Church on Saturday, Sept. 5, at noon. Delp John L. "Jay Bird" Delp, 74, died Sunday at his home in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born July 9, 1935 in Marion. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired from the Montgomery Board of Education in Maryland. He was a Lutheran by faith, and was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Pearl. Survivors include his three sisters, Bobbie Blevins and husband, Herbert, of Marion, Christine Stone and husband, Ivan, of Delaware, and Edith Jean Brown of Louisville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 3, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel in Marion. Burial will follow in the Attoway Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. Lucie Guerrant Gillespie Greever Lucie Guerrant Gillespie Greever, 90, passed away on Aug. 25, 2009 at her home in Burke's Garden, VA. Lucie was born Feb. 20, 1919 to William M. and Mary Hamlin Guerrant Gillespie. Educated at Tazewell County schools, Hollins College, and the University Of Virginia School Of Architecture, Lucie was the first woman to graduate from the School of Architecture. Following her graduation, Lucie worked as an architect in Bluefield, WV. She later practiced her profession from home, drawing for family and friends. Her mark can still be seen on structures throughout Tazewell County. She married Edgar Philip Greever on July 8, 1950. Lucie was an avid supporter of the Crab Orchard Museum, serving as a board member and chairwoman. She was a Girl Scout leader; a member of the Tazewell Community Hospital Auxiliary, and a supporter of numerous charities including the Burke's Garden Fire Department and Rescue Squad. For over 50 years Lucie enjoyed her many friends in the Tazewell Bridge Club. She attended Central Lutheran Church of Burke's Garden, VA. She was predeceased by her parents, one son, Edgar Philip Greever, Jr., and son-in-law, William T. Brooks. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Edgar Philip Greever; her three daughters and their husbands, Nancy Patricia Greever Brooks, Lucinda Gillespie Greever Nicholson and Joe Arlington Nicholson, Eleanor Elizabeth Greever Lewis and Thad Quinton Lewis; six grandchildren, William Philip Greever Brooks and his wife, Andrea Notaro Brooks, Jefferson Gillespie Brooks, Lucie Elizabeth Lewis, Thad Quinton Lewis III, Samuel Arlington Nicholson, Anna Elizabeth Nicholson; and one great-grandchild, Olivia Taylor Brooks. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Gillespie Adams; her brother and sister-in-law, Albert P. Gillespie and Joyce H. Gillespie; and her sister-in-law, Eleanor G. Jones; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service was conducted at 2:00 p.m. Fri., Aug. 28, 2009 at the Central Lutheran Church in Burke's Garden with the Rev. Terry Edwards officiating. Interment followed at the Central Church Cemetery in Burke's Garden. GUY, Helen Sperry, 86, passed away on September 1, 2009 at Woodhaven Hall at Williamsburg Landing. She was born and raised in Cranford, N.J., and graduated from Kent Place School in nearby Summit. She later graduated from Bouv‚-Boston College of Physical Education (now the Bouv‚ College of Health Sciences at Northeastern University). In 1944, she married Richard Guy and, following his wartime service in the Army, they settled in Cranford to raise a family. From 1964 to 1969, they lived in Richmond, Va., and then returned to their roots in Summit, N.J., where they lived for another 27 years. In 1996, they retired to Williamsburg and lived and were active members of the community at Kingsmill. Helen was active in the Junior League, various local book clubs, garden clubs and dining groups. She was also a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Helen was a much loved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who will be much missed. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Richard Guy, who continues to live at Williamsburg Landing; by her three children and their spouses; Peter and Betsy Guy of Richmond, Va., Richard and Nancy Guy of Virginia Beach, Va., and Lois and Jim Cody of Jamesville, N.Y.; and by six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Gray Guy and his wife, Rebecca, and son Alex, of Arlington, Va., Rebecca Guy Thompson and her husband, Carl, of Richmond, Va., Margaret Helen Guy and Donald Guy of Virginia Beach, Va. and Eileen and Christine Cody of Jamesville, N.Y. Horne Lucius Ralph Horne Sr., 91, died peacefully Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009. He was a native of Sugar Grove and a long-time Hampton resident. He retired after 22 years in the Air Force, and served in both World War II and the Korean War. He was very proud of his military service. He later retired as a civilian from the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, and worked for Exxon as an assistant manager. He was preceded in death by his brother, Lloyd Horne. Survivors include his wife, Elnora Horne; two daughters, Kay Bowden and her husband, Andy, and Sheryl Horne; a son, L. Ralph Horne and his wife, Sharon; three brothers, Howard Horne and Wade Horne of Sugar Grove, and Samuel Horne of Picayune, Miss.; a grandchild, Crystal Sullivan and her husband, Greg; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Hunter was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret H. Watson and Elizabeth H. Hamilton; four brothers, John, Walter, Frank and Robert Hunter. He was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon, elder, treasurer, and Adult Sunday School teacher. He was a 1951 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College and served in World War II as a member of the 15th Air Force, flying 50 combat missions as a nose gunner on a B-24 Liberator Bomber. Mr. Hunter served as president and C.E.O. of The Farmers Bank of Appomattox from 1979 until his retirement in 1986. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, September 3, 2009, at Concord Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Louis Skidmore. Norma Jacqueline Simmons Lee Norma Jacqueline Simmons Lee of Richlands went to be with the Lord on Wed., Aug. 26, 2009 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Norma was born June 12, 1937 in Tazewell County, VA, to the late Roy W. and Wanda Simmons. Norma was preceded in death by her daughter, Pamela Michele Lee; two brothers, George T. Simmons and Bernard R. Simmons; and special nephews, Matthew Jackson and Patrick S. Jackson. She is survived by her husband, Robert J. Lee of Richlands; her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis H. Lee and Susan Lee of Tazewell, VA; her grandson, Jacob Lee of Tazewell VA; three brothers and five sisters-in-law, Dennis B. Simmons and his wife, Billie Sue, Jack L. Simmons and his wife, Phyllis, Bill R. Simmons and his wife, Linda, all of Richlands, Bernice M. Simmons, surviving spouse of brother, George and Loretta P. Simmons, surviving spouse of Bernard; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Sandra Spruell and her husband, Jerry, of Roanoke, and Renee Simmons of Georgetown, KY. She is also survived by her maternal aunt, Millie Campbell of Virginia Beach, two maternal uncles, Johnny Short and Blane Short of Portsmouth, VA, many loving nieces and nephews, cousins and special friends. Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Fri., Aug. 28, 2009 at Strong Tower Christian Assembly Church (formerly Raven Assembly of God Church) at Raven, VA, with Rev. Barry Absher officiating. Edna Ruth Brown Martin, of Roanoke, Va., departed this life on Saturday, August 29, 2009. She was born on May 29, 1919, in Spartanburg, S.C., to the late Hampton R. and Janie Petty Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Reverend Celesta F. Martin; a daughter, Sterileen Woods Hubbard; a sister, Mozelle Brown; and brothers, Andrew and Morris Brown. Those left to cherish her memory are three children, Wesley Brown, Rosemary Mitchiner (Reginald) and Gerald Lockhart. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Monica Millner, Adrian Millner, Derreyl Brown, Nigel Brown, Uvonne Brown, Carla Woods, Warren Woods, Michelle Rhame, Ashley Rhame, Angela Arnold, Shallina Divers; 13 great-grandchildren; niece, Betty Jenkins; and nephews, Andrew and Francis Brown, Ernest Brown and Daniel Calloway. Mrs. Martin was educated in the public schools of Roanoke City and graduated in the first class of Lucy Addison High School, the Class of 1935. She held positions throughout the Roanoke valley and retired from the Salem VA Medical Center. Along with her family, her church was very important throughout Mrs. Martin's life. She was a long-standing member of the AME Zion Church becoming active in St. John AME Zion Church in Northeast Roanoke as a child with her family. This affiliation continued for 75 years and extending to the present Price Memorial AME Zion Church. She served in the church as a Girl Scout leader, member of the gospel chorus, a Stewardess, a Trustee, the Ladies Auxiliary, and the Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society. Sister Martin also participated in the Federation of Methodist Women and numerous social and civic organizations throughout the community. She was a fixture at the annual conferences of the AME Zion East Tennessee and Virginia Conference. Often, she would schedule her vacations to permit wider participation. The family visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. at the HamlarCurtis Funeral Home on Thursday, September 3, 2009. Mrs. Martin's funeral will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, September 4, 2009, at Price Memorial AME Zion Church, 506 15th St., N.W. The Reverend Cameron Jackson is pastor and will preside. MARTIN, Eleanor Persing, age 85, of Springfield, Va., died peacefully in her home Monday, August 31, 2009. Born in Washington, D.C. on October 11, 1923, and raised in Richmond, Va., Mrs. Martin was the wife of the late N.W. Martin, her husband of 53 years. Together with Mr. Martin, they owned N.W. Martin Co., Inc., where she worked as the secretary/ treasurer. Mrs. Martin was a longtime resident of Springfield and a charter member of Grace Presbyterian Church and past president of the Women of the Church. She was an active member of the Arlington Junior Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Country Club of Fairfax for 51 years. Mrs. Martin stayed active in her retirement with travel, gardening, bridge and cooking her famous muffins for family and friends. She is survived by her son, William Philip Martin (Betsy) of Millington, N.J.; three grandchildren, Constance Jean Martin, Daniel Philip Martin and Kelly Anne Martin; and her sister, Jean Kiefer of South Carolina. Interment will be Saturday, September 5, 1 p.m. at Maury Cemetery, Richmond. He retired from Brenco after 20 years of dedicated service, was a self-employed contractor for 10 years, with the last eight years employed with Hopewell Hardwood and a volunteer fireman for Prince George Company 1, an avid NASCAR race fan, favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt and his son, Mike, who races at Southside Speedway, also loved to hunt, fish and play the lottery. Most of all, he adored his grandchildren and his beloved dogs, Lacey and Bentley. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carolyn A. Rudy; daughter, Kelley Dean; son, Michael Rudy and wife, Kristy; two grandchildren, Christopher and Cody Dean; sister, Doris Rudy Hopkins; brother, John O. From their union two children were born, "Pete" and "Peggy," both of whom were loved and cherished by their Mom! Her every waking moment involved some thought pertaining to her children. Their unity was demonstrated in worship at Moore Street Baptist Church for many years, and also was evident in their business, Will & Al's Grocery Store on North Avenue in Richmond, Va. Becky worked more than 30 years as a creative designer of store windows and merchandise displays for J.C. Penney, Inc. After retiring, Becky enjoyed traveling, bingo and a fun game of cards. Following an extended illness, Becky departed this life on Monday, August 31, 2009. Cherishing her memory are one son, Howard Anthony Shaw (Regina); one daughter, Margaret Shaw Mosby (Clifford); five grandchildren, Karen L. Murphy (John), Kathy S. Martin (Keith), Taurin J. Mosby (Wendy), Sherron N. Shaw and Everett L. Campbell Jr. (deceased); 11 great-grandchildren, Christopher A. Hite, Camden A. Hite, Keith R. Martin Jr., Jordan T. Mosby, Kasey L. Martin, Ashley N. Suddeth, James

SUDDETH, Lt. Colonel James A. (U.S. Army, Ret.), age 88, died in his sleep on August 31, 2009. His beloved wife of 66 years, Anne Dodson Suddeth; and son, J. Allen Suddeth and daughter-in-law, Grace T. Suddeth, survive him. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Annelle Suddeth Reid; and son-in-law, David A. Reid. He had four grandchildren, Richard Cooper Reid and David Alvin Reid of Richmond, and Nicole Hunter Suddeth and Patrick Allen Suddeth of Glen Ridge, New Jersey. He was born in Winterville, Georgia on February 1, 1921, and moved to Atlanta during his high school and college years. Attending Georgia Tech, he met and married his future wife, Anne, and accepted a commission into the Army in 1943. He served with distinction for 23 years, with postings in Martinique, Puerto Rico, the Pentagon, Ft. Leavenworth, Ft. Bragg, Ft. Monmouth, Korea, Vienna, and Paris. After retiring from the military, he worked for Martin Marietta, the Philip Carey Corporation, The Bank Building Corporation, and in commercial real estate. He held a B.S. degree in Military Science from the University of Maryland. A restless intellect, he went back to college when he was about 70, earning a Master's Degree in Humanities from the University of Richmond. A golf and tennis fan, a stamp and coin collector, and raconteur, he was in his element at diplomatic parties in Paris in the 1960s and around Richmond. He was also an avid student of history, and counted among his interests membership in the Sons of the American Revolution (where he was past president of the Richmond chapter), the Jamestowne Society, and the Society of Colonial Wars. He was also a member of the Reveille United Methodist Church. The Suddeths will miss his wit, his strength, his stories, his French "bon mots" and his dapper appearance. His remains rest at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels.
