Harris, Lucy

Lucy Virginia G. Harris SUFFOLK - "... A woman that fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates." - Proverbs 31: 30b - 31. In the sacred stillness of the afternoon, a processional of angels ushered Lucy Harris from earth to glory. The atmosphere of praise and thanksgiving filled her chambers and calmed our souls. She conquered death like she faced life with courage, dignity and grace. Lucy Virginia Goode Harris traded her mansion on earth for a home in bright glory on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009 on the placid Double R Ranch in Suffolk. Lucy was the daughter of the late Junious and Betty Parker Goode. She was born Feb. 22, 1926 in Waverly, Va. She was the middle child of five siblings. She was predeceased by one brother, Rudolph Goode. She attended college at the Norfolk Campus of the University of Virginia, where she distinguished herself as a scholar and dedicated citizen of the Commonwealth of Virginia. She was married to the late Clarence Julius Harris. For many years they made their home in the Crest Harbor community of Chesapeake. They were the parents of one lovely and precious daughter, Ronda Harris. All who knew Lucy praised her for her unfailing love for her daughter whom she loved dearly. Her affections for her son-in-law were most enduring. In return, they provided for their mother stellar 24-hour care where "Mama Lucy" had her own suite and accommodations fit for a queen. She had personal assistants who cared for her with joy and love. A dedicated, consummate public servant, lay practitioner of the faith, compassionate social worker and family oriented, Lucy Harris was a beloved wife, precious mother and mother-in-law, a doting grandmother, sweet sister, aunt and friend to all. We sweetly called her our "Miss Lucy." When her only child Ronda started nursery, Mother Harris resigned her employment and joined the staff of Liberty Park Day Nursery. She made a heroic difference for the citizens of Norfolk, Virginia and she never lost the motherly touch for those who were in need. She served the Department of Welfare for 10 years. She retired as a supervisor for eligibility with Norfolk Social Services in December 1981. She served her staff with great admiration. Lucy Harris was nurtured in a Christian home and her faith grew immensely. She gave her heart to Jesus and was baptized. She was a member of the First Baptist Church - Crestwood for many years and only transferred her membership when her son-in-law became the pastor of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Norfolk. She was a queenly Mother who reminded us of our rich heritage and she stepped with graceful dignity to show us that she was a chosen vessel for the King of Kings. "Miss Lucy" knew that she was deeply loved and honored through the unconditional love and unwavering support by her family. Lucy would always ask to assist her grandchildren and provided the wisdom of her experience and joy of her love in caring for them. Left to honor her legacy and pay tribute to her precious memory are her most devoted daughter and son, Elder Ronda Harris Russell and Bishop Clarence Vernie Russell Jr.; three grandchildren, Bishop Clarence Vernie Russell III and his wife Elder Jamie Brown Russell, Corey V. Russell, Courtney V. Russell; six great-grandchildren, Clarence V. Russell IV, Caitlyn V. Russell, Casey V. Russell, Judea Russell, Corey V. Russell Jr., and Cayla T. Russell; two sisters, Mamie (Melvin) Foote, Barbara (Willie) Cooper; one brother, James (Dr. Norma) Goode; sister-in-law, Eloise Goode; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. A homegoing celebration will take place in the Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Norfolk, Virginia on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at noon. Bishop Clarence Vernie Russell Jr. will offer the eulogy. Graves Funeral Home Inc. of Norfolk is serving the family. The burial will be at Rosewood-Kellum Memorial Park in Virginia Beach. The family is receiving visitation at the Double R. Ranch, 7742 Quaker Drive, Suffolk, VA 23437. The family wishes to express profound gratitude to Tammy Smithwrick, Selena Russell, Gwen Barnes, Dresden Gage, Antoinette Clark, Shonda Washington, R.N., and the staff of Accessible Home Health Care, and the Odyssey Hospice Care for their collective and individual care of our beloved mother, Lucy Harris. We will continue to extend to you our hearts of unlimited love and our arms of unfailing friendship., Make a memorial contribution

Jennings, Walter

The family of Rev. Dr. Walter (Barney) Jennings wishes to thank all our friends and well-wishers for the many prayers, cards, flowers, gifts, visits, donations to Woltz Hospice Home and kind thoughts and words for this very special Deacon/Dentist who has devoted his life to helping others. His devotion to his assigned Churches, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wytheville and St. Edwards in Pulaski and to his prison ministry and his dental work in his profession for over 48 years was a tribute to his love of mankind. Our dear man is very much missed and always will be, but he lives on in what he taught his family and others by his kindness and caring and just plain being himself. He was known to sit and eat at the lunch table with the children in school he loved all of them and they knew it. He was an excellent Dentist who worked both in private practice and for the State of Virginia and was a wonderful role model for many. He actually worked on 4 generations of the same family. Not many people can say they worked to the age of 80 as he considered his work as a ministry. What a privilege it has been to be his wife, and I, along with our sons, just wanted to thank everyone for helping him through the sudden onset of the cancer he fought so hard against, the professional staff from NRV Hospital in Radford, Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem and the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC were all skilled, caring and very much appreciated. God bless all of you. Joan Jennings and Family, Hillsville, Va., Make a memorial contribution

Smith, Brooke Mckinsey

Brooke captured the true essence of beauty both inside and out. Man looks upon the outside, and God looks upon the heart. I believe they both smiled when they looked at her. She seemed to be born with a smile on her face and was full of life her whole life through, even through her bout (roller derby) with cancer. She loved her family so much and they were very, very important to her. Her sister Ashley, age 23, who was only 14 months older than her, shared everything with her, from food and bedrooms, to clothes and colds. She loved to mother her younger brother Mitchell, age 18, and yet was his close buddy. She made her Mom, Rebecca Wimmer Smith, and her Dad, the late Barry L. Smith, laugh with glee and, at times, lose their hair. Her friend, and Mom #2, Cynthia Oliver and her family had a special place in her heart. Her grandparents, Rose Smith, Shirley Lineberry, Eugene (PaGene) Lineberry, and the late Dennis Earl Wimmer and Clarence L. Smith, were all fun for her to hug and kiss. Numerous close aunts, uncles, and cousins made life beautiful, and her God-ordained family made life complete. She was a social creature and LOVED people. She had so many amazing friends that I hesitate to try and mention you all. Just know that she loved you So Much. God was truly the author and the finisher in Brooke's life. Her relationship with Him was her core, and she returned to Him with an amazing passion. She loved sports, her latest being Roller Derby, which brought her great excitement. Her creativity and love for people shined in her hairdressing skills at St Pierre Salon. Brooke, it's impossible to say goodbye because you will live on eternally through the impact that you made and will continue to make in our lives. We LOVE you Forever and Ever and Ever. Dance With Jesus until we see you again!, Contributions can be made to the Brooke Smith Memorial Fund at any BB&T Bank, account #1430000375266. Temple, Jerry Wayne

TEMPLE, Jerry Wayne, 64, of Atlanta, Georgia and Highlands, North Carolina, died at his home in Atlanta on September 24, 2009, after a courageous eight-year battle with prostate cancer. God broke the mold when he made Jerry, truly a one-of-a-kind husband, father, and friend. Jerry was born November 21, 1944 in Rockmart, Ga. to Jewell Purser and James Thomas Temple. A good man who led a good life, Jerry marched to the beat of his own drum, as the family dentist would always remind his two daughters when they went in for their annual cleanings. His insatiable thirst for knowledge and consummate will to succeed began in early childhood, with his having blazed through every book in the school library by the seventh grade. Attending West Fulton High School, he was a force to be reckoned with on and off the football field. Jerry graduated from Georgia State with a B.S. in Finance, and, from there, found his true calling in the financial industry, with an esteemed career at Robinson Humphrey and then Jeffries in Atlanta. In 1989, having accepted the position of Managing Director, Head of Institutional Trading at Wheat First Union, Jerry and his family relocated to Richmond, Virginia, a move he was only willing to make because he would remain below the Mason-Dixon line. Later, after only three short months of retirement and several fly fishing expeditions, Jerry was hard-pressed to find a hobby he loved as much as trading and he returned to work at BB&T. A true Atlanta man through and through, he could only survive being away from his beloved Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and The Varsity for so long, returning to Atlanta in 2007 to enjoy his last few years in what he fondly proclaimed as God's country. Jerry's unyielding loyalty defined his life and anyone who was lucky enough to achieve a coveted spot beneath his wing was truly blessed and protected. As the patriarch of his large clan, his unrelenting honesty ensured lively conversations around the mountain house dinner table, where he always took the point of opposition against his wife Cathy just to ruffle feathers. Jerry's idea of perfection was his family gathered together watching college football, a cigar in his hand and a Rebel Yell and Diet Coke balanced on the bottom of his foot, one of his many party tricks that never ceased to amaze. Survivors include Cathy, his wife of 37 years; his five children, Jon of Atlanta, Mike and his wife, Julianne, of Atlanta, Scott of New Orleans, Maggie of Atlanta, and Katie of San Francisco; his grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jackson; his mother, Jewell; brother, Tommy and his wife, Terry; and sister, Susan and her husband, Kenny. He was predeceased by his father, James. The funeral will be held graveside at Westview Cemetery at 11 a.m. Monday, September 28, 2009. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Alexander -Tharpe Fund, 150 Bobby Dodd Way NW, Atlanta, Ga. 30332; Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust, P.O. Box 1703, Highlands, N.C. 28741; Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Drive, Atlanta, Ga. 30319.
