Theresa Marie Bevacqua NEWPORT NEWS - Theresa Marie Bevacqua, 88, a resident of Warwick Forest, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009. She was born in Jersey City, N.J., and lived her early childhood years in Portsmouth and Richmond (St. Joseph's Villa). She later returned to New Jersey and married Frank Bevacqua on Sept. 7, 1941. Upon her husband's retirement in 1976, they established their home in Portsmouth. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She had a great passion for cooking and enjoyed her friends and activities at the Portsmouth Beazley Club and the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary. She had a zest for life especially enjoying her family, friends and staff at Warwick Forest. Mrs. Bevacqua was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents, Ambrose and Mary LaViola; brother, Frank LaViola; and sister, Catherine Morehead. She is survived by her son, Dominick and his wife Marsha; two granddaughters and their spouses, Elana and Ted Maloney and Lynette and John Widdis; six great-grandchildren, Martin, Jane, Grace, Peter, Dylan and Mia; five nieces, two nephews; and a sister, Vera Henderson and her husband Manley. He retired from Verizon, and was a member of Communication Workers of America (CWA)-Local 2201, and a former member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers-Local 666. She is survived by her dedicated husband, John C. Clarke; her devoted son, Richard Eric Askew of Sandston, Virginia; three grandchildren, Grayson, Tanner and Spencer Askew; daughter-in-law, Shelly Askew; and her beloved poodle, Louie. She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Lee Meadows; and mother, Margaret Hess Meadows. Margaret was born in Hinton, West Virginia where she resided for 24 years before moving to Richmond. She retired from Dominion Virginia Power after 36 years of loyal service. During her retirement she enjoyed her fair share of traveling with her loving husband, John. Their life together was full of love and laughter. Margaret was full of spirit and her infectious laugh brought smiles to all around her. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Harvey Peterson of Oakland, California., After graduating from Utah State University where she and R.J. met, over the years she taught English and creative writing to senior high school students. She found moving from place to place to be difficult because of R.J.'s World War II and civilian career transfers but treasured the numerous life-long friends they made. Discovering this, travel near and far became a choice activity for Virginia., Throughout her life, she enjoyed her gift for gardening. Her glance, her touch enriched both plants and flowers and her homes. She also was blessed with a lasting love of music and a passion for art and a well-written book. Except for her last move to Charlottesville, her piano always accompanied her., Virginia is also survived by her cherished family members, a brother, Daryl E. Peterson and his wife, Mildred, of Salt Lake City, Utah; a daughter, Kay Robinson and her husband, Glen, of Charlottesville; two grandchildren, Jennifer A. Robinson of Brooklyn, New York and Dean C. He was employed by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management and was active in amateur radio projects, Special Olympics and the American Red Cross. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 30, 1922 to Marine Captain Morris and Margaret Miller. At six weeks of age, Ruth began her travels as a Marine dependent aboard the USS Henderson bound for Haiti, followed by Camp Lejeune, N.C. and Quantico, Va. She met her husband, Joseph John Holicky Jr., Col, U.S.M.C. (retired) at the Marine Corps Birthday Ball in 1945. They were married on June 1, 1946. Mrs. Holicky retired from Chesterfield County Public Schools in 1993. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Joseph John Holicky Jr.; her children, Joseph John III and Irene Burlock, Timothy Michael and Debbie Cunningham, David Anthony and Ginger Fuzie, Mark Francis and Bob Diller, all of Richmond, and Mary Kathleen Holicky of Denton, Texas; four grandchildren, Stephen, Matthew and Kathryn of Richmond and Benjamin and Laura of Seattle. Lashley and wife, Elinor, of Williamsburg, Va.; four nephews, one niece, three great-nephews, four great- nieces; and her dear friend, Ann Long. Nancye was born and raised in Lawrenceville, Va. She graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College. She retired from her career of teaching math at Brunswick High School, and was a lifelong member of Lawrenceville United Methodist Church. In 2002 she moved to Westminster Canterbury of Richmond where she received wonderful care and lived until her death. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Lawrenceville United Methodist Church, with interment in Oakwood Cemetery, Lawrenceville. Dr. May is also survived by his nephew, Jim Stemple and his wife, Cindy, and their two daughters; and his niece, Ellen Shaw and her husband, Glenn, and their three daughters. Dr. May was an anesthesiologist, having graduated from MCV in 1956 and served in private practice in Richmond, Norfolk and Nashville. Dr. May was also a graduate of the School of Theology at the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn., and was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1974 in the Diocese of Southern Virginia by the Rt. Rev. David Rose. Dr. May served parishes in Norfolk (Christ and St. Luke's), Nashville (St. David's) and in Richmond (Our Savior and The Church of the Holy Comforter) and was loved and respected as a challenging preacher and deeply compassionate pastor. A Holy Eucharist of the Resurrection will be celebrated in thanksgiving for Dr. May's life and ministry at the Church of the Holy Comforter, 4819 Monument Ave., Richmond, Va. 23230, on Saturday, September 26 at 11 a.m. The family will join friends for a reception immediately following the service in the parish house. He was an Army veteran and retired from W.M. Bassett Furniture Co., where he worked for a number of years. He was a member of Stella Christian Church. A native of Norfolk, Floyd was the head of Fleet Accounting and Dispersing, retiring in April 1982 after 34 years. He was a member of Park Place United Methodist Church and retired organist and choir master of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church after 52 years and served as interim organist in several local churches after retirement including Chesapeake Avenue United Methodist Church and Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Asbury College, Wilmore, Ky., and a U.S. Army and Army Air Corps veteran of the Asiatic Campaign. Floyd is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Patricia "Pat" Culpepper Powell; two daughters, Amy-Lynn Powell Morgan and husband John of Chesapeake, Wendy Powell Patten and husband John of Norfolk; a son, Floyd Henly Powell III and wife Noelani of Chesapeake; five grandchildren, Abby Morgan of Norfolk, Justin Patten of Norfolk, and Kyle, Aaron, and Laura Powell, all of Chesapeake; brother-in-law and sister- in-law, Martin and Cindy Culpepper of El Paso, Texas; several nieces and nephews. In 2007, she was one of six university administrators and faculty recipients of the Advancing Women Award. In 2009 the Pamplin College of Business awarded her a Certificate of Excellence for Lifetime Achievement in Diversity. Upon her retirement in 2008, she was awarded Emerita status by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors., A member of Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, she was on the Session and taught Sunday School. She also chaired the Cooper House Ministry Board for two years. She sang with the Blacksburg Master Chorale since 1988, served as co-president for two years, and participated in all three European tours. She also served her alma mater as co-chair of the alumni fund and alumni member of the Board of Trustees. She was also a member of the Board of Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge and served as its president in 2006. From 1985 until her retirement, Norrine was a member of the Virginia Board of the American Council on Education Network for Women Leaders, serving as chair for two years. Margaret was born on November 10, 1918 in Iredell County and she was the daughter of William S. and Maggie C. Brawley. She resided and worked her entire adult life in her beloved Greensboro. Margaret was a wonderful cook and took great pleasure in cooking for friends and family. Many friends enjoyed her wonderful breads, pies and cakes and will have fond memories of her talents. She also loved her garden and loved to share her flowers and vegetables as well. Margaret is survived by her children, Clifton J. Troutman III, of Richmond, Va., Jane T. Porter and husband, Russ, also of Richmond, and Cobie T. Ellington and husband, Larry of Mt. Pleasant, N.C. Margaret had one grandson, James Patrick Bowles also of Mt. Pleasant, N.C. whom she cherished and was very proud of. Margaret was preceded in death by brothers, Rome and Herman Lackey; sisters, Ester L. Caudill, Lois B. Byrd and Grace B. Enos. The family wishes to express sincere thanks to Margaret's neighbors who were always there when she needed them. Sep 24, 2009 The funeral for William "Ringeye" Welch Jr., 66, of 50 Parkway Drive, Martinsville, who died Sept. 21, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Stanfield-Miller Funeral Home with Minister H.D. Scales officiating. Burial will be in Christian View Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30-2 p.m. Friday and other times at the home of his mother, Callie T. Penn Welch, at 308 Arrowhead Circle, Spencer. Welch was born in Henry County on Dec. 24, 1942, to Callie T. Penn Welch of Spencer and William M. Welch. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, David Leon Welch. He attended G.W. Carver High School and was a member of Christian View Missionary Baptist Church at Spencer. He had worked at Pulaski Furniture Co. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are three sisters, Mary H. Foster of Ridgeway, Malinda Welch of Spencer and Patricia M. Foster of Ridgeway; and two brothers, Percy M. Welch and James L. Welch, both of Spencer.

Ronald H. Wirt Sr., 72, of Johns Creek Road, New Castle, Va. and formerly of Ridgeway, Va. passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2009. Ronnie was a retired business agent for Teamsters Local 22 in Collinsville, Va. A member of the Forks of Johns Creek Christian Church. Served four years in the United States Air Force and honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He was a proud member of Christiansburg High School graduating class of 1953 of whom he enjoyed staying in contact. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd H. and Pauline McGuire Wirt; a sister, Christine W. Graham; brother-in-law, Dr. Charlie Boatwright; and a sister-in-law, Moncella N. Gray., Surviving family are his wife, Nagatha (Gaye); sons and their spouses, Ronald H. Jr. and Ann M. Wirt, of Gloucester, Va., Donald L. and Gina B. Wirt, of Martinsville, Va. and their mother, Jane H. Wirt, of Fieldale, Va.; grandchildren are Nathan H. Wirt, of Gloucester, Va., Jacob B. Wirt, of Martinsville, Zachary L. and Mandy C. James Oliver Yeldell Jr. NORFOLK - James Oliver Yeldell Jr. was called home to be with the Lord Monday, Sept. 14, 2009. He was born Nov. 8, 1965, in Norfolk. He continued his education at Virginia State University where he found one of his callings, commentating for the Trojans. He is survived by his wife of nine years, Lissa Yeldell; parents, Mary and James O. Yeldell Sr. of Norfolk; three sisters, Pam Abrams (Paul) of Colorado Springs, Colo., Nichole Jones (James) of Norfolk and Cheryl Allen (Eric) of Maryland; nieces, Lynaie' and Mayia; nephews, Blake and Khiry; and a host of godchildren, other relatives and friends.
