ADAMS, Brenda Beasley, 56, of King William, went to be with her Lord on Monday, September 21, 2009. She had a love for her crafts and the outdoors. She is survived by her husband, Linwood "Lenny" Adams; a son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Tiffany Adams; granddaughter, Cheyenne; stepdaughter, Kathy Stevens and husband, Glen; parents, Bill and Catherine Beasley; half-sister, Beverly Judd of Yorktown, Va.; several nieces, nephews and cousins, and many friends who are considered family. The family will receive friends Wednesday and Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where funeral services will be held Friday, 11 a.m. Interment in Hanover Memorial Park.

Alvis M. Foley , Sr. 

Sep 23, 2009 Alvis McCray Foley Sr., 74, of Stuart, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem. He was born Feb. 7, 1935, to James "Boss" Foley and Vada Sawyers Foley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Odean Thomas; and three brothers, Alexander, Frank and Grady Foley. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict and retired from Griffith Lumber Co. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are two sons, James A. Foley of Laurel Fork and Alvis McCray Foley Jr. of Stuart; two daughters, Natalie Shelton and Tina F. Woods, both of Stuart; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; five sisters, Pauline Foley and Allene Foley, both of Stuart, Jeraldine Thomas of Woolwine, Nannie Bett Martin of Stuart and Brenda Adams of Ferrum; one brother, Lewis Foley of Stuart; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Eugene Lawson officiating. Burial will be in the Foley family cemetery with military honors conducted by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. Theresa Marie Bevacqua NEWPORT NEWS - Theresa Marie Bevacqua, 88, a resident of Warwick Forest, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009. She was born in Jersey City, N.J., and lived her early childhood years in Portsmouth and Richmond (St. Joseph's Villa). She later returned to New Jersey and married Frank Bevacqua on Sept. 7, 1941. Upon her husband's retirement in 1976, they established their home in Portsmouth. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She had a great passion for cooking and enjoyed her friends and activities at the Portsmouth Beazley Club and the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary. She had a zest for life especially enjoying her family, friends and staff at Warwick Forest. Mrs. Bevacqua was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents, Ambrose and Mary LaViola; brother, Frank LaViola; and sister, Catherine Morehead. She is survived by her son, Dominick and his wife Marsha; two granddaughters and their spouses, Elana and Ted Maloney and Lynette and John Widdis; six great-grandchildren, Martin, Jane, Grace, Peter, Dylan and Mia; five nieces, two nephews; and a sister, Vera Henderson and her husband Manley. He leaves behind two sons that he loved very much, Wade Cantrell, and Jesse Cantrell and wife Pam all of Christiansburg; VA; two daughters that he loved very much: Debbie Branson of Floyd, VA, and, Michele Compton and husband Roger of Willis, VA; four sisters, Emma Young and husband Wendell, Velva Wirt and husband James E., Geraldine Kelly, all of Christiansburg, VA, and, Barbara Taylor of Wise, VA; two brothers, Cam Cantrell and wife Nancy of Dayton, OH, and, James I. Cantrell of Floyd, VA. Bob served his country in the United States Navy, and, a longtime resident of Christiansburg, VA. He leaves behind many grandchildren and great grandchildren that he enjoyed watching grow up so well There are also many friends that have known him and grew to love him that they would be too many to list. REVEREND WILLIAM C. CHILDRESS TELLICO PLAINS, TN-Reverend William R. Childress passed away on September 12, 2009, at the U.T. Medical Center, Knoxville, TN. He was born in Richmond, VA, on November 8, 1924, the son of the late Reverend R. W. and Lelia Childress. He attended school at Willis, VA, and graduated from Hillsville High School, King College, and Columbia Theological Seminary. He was a veteran of the European Theater in World War II. Preacher Bill served as pastor of several Presbyterian churches in Monroe County, TN and was retired from Center Presbyterian Church. Survivors include: his wife, Roberta , of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Bill Briggs of Tunnel Hill, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Sandy Childress of Tellico Plains; grandson and wife, Aaron and Ashley Briggs; granddaughters, Cierra and Kenzie Inman; sister, Marie Lucas, of Tellico Plains; brother, Paul Childress and wife, Anna, of Hillsville, VA; sisters-in-law, Jean Childress of Meadows of Dan, and Alice Childress of Galax, VA. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents, Rev. R.W. and Lelia Childress, sisters, Hattie Childress and Evelyn Kemp, brothers, Conduff Childress, Rev. Bryan Childress and Rev. Robert Childress. A memorial service was held on Saturday, September 19, at Center Presbyterian Church in Tellico Plains. DELLA MARIE CRUISE WINCHESTER,VA-Della Marie Cruise passed away with grace and dignity on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the age of 51. She leaves behind: her mother and step-father, Clara and Otis Puckett, Meadows of Dan; sister, Patricia Cruise, Patrick Springs, VA; brothers, Ronald Wayne Cruise, Wake Forest, NC, Phillip Leon Cruise, Wake Forest, NC, Donald Puckett, Patrick Springs; special aunt, Monnie Lovins, Christiansburg, VA. She was preceded in death by her father, Hoy Robert Cruise, sister, Linda Lou Cruise, and two brothers, Elvin Robert Cruise and Lonnie Lee Cruise. Della was dearly loved by dozen of friends in the Winchester area, where she had lived and worked for over 30 years. Della was a member of the Aerie Eagles Women's Auxiliary, Winchester Moose and volunteer for all those years in Special Olympics, Programs for the ARC, Bingo worker for the Millwood Fire Company and many other organizations that cared for disabled children and adults. She loved bowling and was a diehard softball player in her younger years. Della worked at Grafton School for over twenty years, Access Independence, Evans Home for Children and was retired from ResCare. She was always available to help even during her illness. Della is a soul we all dearly loved. As she was never along if life, she will never be alone now. A Celebration of Life is planned for September 26, 2009 at the U.A.W.-Local 149, Paper Mill Road in Winchester from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. All are welcome. DEAL, Alma Mae Parrish, 82, of Gainesville, passed away September 20, 2009 at the Prince William Hospital. Born August 11, 1927 in Goochland County, Virginia, she was the daughter of Wilmer and Alpha Johnson Parrish. On December 27, 1947 in Richmond, Virginia, she married George Douglas Deal, who survives. She was the co-owner and operator of the Lamont Photography Studio in Arlington, Va. for over 35 years. Surviving besides her beloved husband of 61 years are three daughters, Sherry Deal of Reno, Nev., Jan Moody and her husband, Martin, of Kensington, Md., Carol Serna of Palm Bay, Fla.; four sisters, Louise Durrett, Dorothy Kusterer and her husband, Bernard, June Burton and her husband, Eddie, and Arlene Berry and her husband, Carter; two brothers, Earl Parrish and his wife, Virginia, Everett Parrish and his wife, Alice; and five grandchildren, James Warthen, Andrea Moody, George Warthen, Kelsey Moody and Kimberly Moody. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Baker-Post Funeral Home, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas, with a reception to immediately follow. Meridee Frances M. Dick VIRGINIA BEACH - On Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, Meridee Frances Morrison Dick was surrounded by family and friends as God brought her home to Him. Meri, the daughter of Frances Hills Gillan and Richard Allen Morrison, was born Feb. 5, 1961, in Wellsville, N.Y. Meri attended high school in Salisbury, Md., and moved to Virginia Beach shortly after graduation. She spent the majority of her adult life in the restaurant business. One of her proudest moments was the opening of her own restaurant, Ballyhoos, in Norfolk. Meri was a warm, sharing, compassionate, vibrant, independent and determined individual. She was creative and loved to serve as the party planner for all her family and friends. Meri easily made friends everywhere she went. She had friends for every stage of her life which she maintained throughout her life. Family was dear to Meri and she was proud of all of them. She was especially proud of her father's and two brother's association with the fire department. She made a major contribution to the Virginia Beach Firefighter's Memorial. Meri was predeceased by her brother, Jim Kellogg, and her uncle, Jim Morrison. She is survived by her husband, Randy; parents, Fran and Lee Gillan, Dick and Sandy Morrison; sister, Sue Kellogg Wells (Robert); brothers, Rodney Kellogg (Brenda), Rik Kellogg, and Matt Morrison (Jen); nieces and nephews, Christen, Kody, Justin, Whitney, Mitchell, Gary, Michael, Joshua, Erin, Emily, Jimi and Jason; numerous great-nieces and -nephews; and her very special friends, Kelly, Dawn, Sybil and Donna. She is also survived by her "children," golden retrievers Sophie Marie and Sammy George. One of Meri's greatest joys was taking Sophie and Sammy to run on the beach at 64th Street. A celebration of life will be held Thursday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. at Virginia Beach Christian Church, 2225 Rose Hall Drive, Virginia Beach, with a reception following at the home of her father, Dick Morrison. Betsy Bishop Hankins of Chatham, Virginia, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, September 23, 2009. She died at home after a brief illness surrounded by her children. Born on October 13, 1934 in Danville, Virginia, Betsy was the daughter of the late Roy and Ruby Bishop. She was a 1952 graduate of George Washington High School. Betsy had a quiet and gracious spirit always seeing life from a positive perspective in spite of being beset with rheumatoid arthritis and most recently pancreatic cancer. She was an inspiration to others as she battled for decades a debilitating illness with the same quiet grace that she lived her life. Betsy was a devoted mother and wife. She loved her four children and was always supportive and proud of them in all circumstances. Her greatest love was her husband Willard Lee Hankins who predeceased her on February 8, 2009. They were married for 54 years. She loved music and singing. She was especially happy at holidays when her children and grandchildren would gather and play and sing music. She was a member of the Chatham Baptist Church where she loved singing in the choir., She is survived by a son, Steven L. She is forever reunited with her departed father, Cezar Alcabao and mother, Rosalia Alcabao. She leaves behind a loving husband, Armstead "Ace" Lassiter and a beloved brother, Cielito Joseph Saxe. During WWII he served in the Merchant Marines. He then married the former Ruth Sabonjian in 1948. He owned Tip Top Inn in Church Hill, before working at Reynolds Metals from 1957 to 1987. He was dearly devoted to his family. He was also very dedicated to his Armenian heritage and St. James Armenian Church. Gerry was preceded in death by his loving wife Ruth. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Sharigian; son, Armen Sharigian II (Nancy); grandson, Armen III. The family will receive friends Thursday, 5 to 7 p.m., with a memorial service at 7 p.m. at Bliley's-Central. Funeral services will be held Friday, 11 a.m. at St. James Armenian Church, 834 Pepper Ave., with interment at Riverview Cemetery. In 2007, she was one of six university administrators and faculty recipients of the Advancing Women Award. In 2009 the Pamplin College of Business awarded her a Certificate of Excellence for Lifetime Achievement in Diversity. Upon her retirement in 2008, she was awarded Emerita status by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors., A member of Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, she was on the Session and taught Sunday School. She also chaired the Cooper House Ministry Board for two years. She sang with the Blacksburg Master Chorale since 1988, served as co-president for two years, and participated in all three European tours. She also served her alma mater as co-chair of the alumni fund and alumni member of the Board of Trustees. She was also a member of the Board of Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge and served as its president in 2006. From 1985 until her retirement, Norrine was a member of the Virginia Board of the American Council on Education Network for Women Leaders, serving as chair for two years. That group honored her in 2008 with a named scholarship for their Leadership Seminar Series., will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow in the Church Fellowship Hall. Berhent was born June 2, 1978, in Portsmouth to Dale Harold Stoltz and Marie Lucille Aymond Stoltz. Berhent was a glass-blowing artist who sold his works in Charleston galleries. He also loved oystering, crabbing and fishing. Besides his parents who now reside in Colonial Beach, he is survived by a daughter, Veda Marie Stoltz of Charleston; a brother, Rodney Harold Stoltz of Virginia Beach; maternal grandmother, Norma Gonzalez Aymond of Virginia Beach; paternal grandfather, Harold Berhent Stoltz of Rock Creek, Ohio; paternal grandmother, Helen Esther Stoltz of Geneva, Ohio; a special friend, Coryn of Charleston; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Joseph Rodney Aymond of Port Barre, La. Sep 23, 2009 The funeral for Susie Subella Preston Hairston, 86, of 1113 Fayette St., Martinsville, who died Sept. 19, 2009, at her home, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul High Street Baptist Church with the Rev. William A. Shackleford Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church for a half-hour before the funeral and other times at the home of her daughter, Delveta Hairston, 1315 Cardinal Lane, Martinsville. She was born Sept. 15, 1923, in Henry County to Walter Reeves Preston and Emma Mack Reynolds Preston. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earlie Hairston; two sisters, Helen Patterson and Iris P. Smith; and a brother, James Walter Preston. She attended Henry County Training School and was a member of St. Paul High Street Baptist Church, where she was in the senior choir, was a pastor's aid and was on the culinary committee. She had been a Gray Lady with the American Red Cross. She retired as a floor lady at American Furniture's Redd Level plant. Surviving, in addition to her daughter, are a son, Earlie Owens Hairston of Martinsville; four grandsons; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Anna Mae Yopp Thienel, 89, of Bedford, Va., died Tuesday, September 22, 2009, in Lynchburg General Hospital. Born March 1, 1920 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late James Yopp and Minnie Odell Collins Yopp. In addition to her parents, Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Marie Thienel; five brothers, Grant Yopp (due to casualty of D-Day), Armon Yopp, Herbert Yopp, Nelson Yopp and Madison Yopp; and two sisters, Bly McFall and Alice Wagner. Anna loved visiting her granddogs, Quincy, Emily and Pebbles. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and quilting. She also loved life, people and playing bingo. Anna worked and retired from Rubatex. She was a member of Liberty Chapter #109 Order of the Eastern Star and BPOE Elks Lodge #321. Anna was also a resident of the Elks National Home. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Wiley "Brock" Brockenbrough; seven brothers, and three sisters. Surviving are two sons and their wives, Wayne and Dolores Brockenbrough of Christiansburg, and Ronnie "Ron" and Patsy Brockenbrough of Jackson, Tennessee; seven grandchildren, Connie Brockenbrough Vaughn and husband Joe, Thomas Wayne "T.W." Brockenbrough and his wife, Darlene, Russell Karl Brockenbrough and his wife, Tracy, Deborah B. WHITE, Helen Williams, 82, of Goochland, died suddenly on September 21, 2009. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harold Randolph White. She was the loving mother of Brian Randolph White (Linda) of Goochland and Amy White Waldrop of Richmond. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Benton, Philip (Ka'ea) and Hannah; a great-granddaughter, Kai; and sisters, Gladys McKessan and Jane Jones. Helen was a graduate of Longwood College and enjoyed the teaching profession for many years. She was the director of Bon Air Presbyterian Preschool, where she enjoyed teaching the young children. After retirement, she spent time traveling, spending time with her family, and going to live theater. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, September 25, at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad Street. The immediate family will have a life celebration on Sunday, September 27, at Massanutten to recall many family memories. After WWII, he became involved in the automobile business, at one time owning the Ford dealership in Crewe. In 1964, Buster started Wilkerson Co., an aircraft tire business, which quickly became a well-known international business. William E. Clark , Sr. 

Sep 23, 2009 The funeral for William Elgan "Pete" Clark Sr., 82, of 278 Spur Road, Greensboro, N.C., who died Sept. 20, 2009, at Clapps Nursing Home in North Carolina, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, East Martinsville. The Rev. Charles Whitfield and Bishop Darrell Hairston will officiate. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hairston Funeral Home and other times at the home of his godson, Kerry Smith, 136 Lombard Circle, Martinsville. Clark was born Jan. 5, 1927, in Martinsville to Robert Allen Clark and Anna Edwards Clark. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Hairston Clark; five sisters, Ophelia Ziglar, Mary Ruth Green, Charlene Clark, Deloise Clark and Aloise Clark; and a brother, Robert E. Clark. He served in the Army during World War II and worked at Virginia Shoe Shop, Virginia Mirror Co. and First Presbyterian Church. He also was self-employed as the owner of Williams Cleaning Service, from which he retired. Surviving are a son, William E. Clark Jr. of Fayetteville, Ga.; a daughter, Genevieve C. Hylton-Herbin of Greensboro; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Anne C. Hairston of Martinsville; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.


 


 

William Welch, Jr. 

Sep 23, 2009 The funeral for William "Ringeye" Welch Jr., 66, of 50 Parkway Drive, Martinsville, who died Sept. 21, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Stanfield-Miller Funeral Home with Minister H.D. Scales officiating. Burial will be in Christian View Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30-2 p.m. Friday and other times at the home of his mother, Callie T. Penn Welch, at 308 Arrowhead Circle, Spencer. Welch was born in Henry County on Dec. 24, 1942, to Callie T. Penn Welch of Spencer and William M. Welch. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, David Leon Welch. He attended G.W. Carver High School and was a member of Christian View Missionary Baptist Church at Spencer. He had worked at Pulaski Furniture Co. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are three sisters, Mary H. Foster of Ridgeway, Malinda Welch of Spencer and Patricia M. Foster of Ridgeway; and two brothers, Percy M. Welch and James L. Welch, both of Spencer.
