ABBITT Sr., Charles Irby

ABBITT, Mr. Charles Irby, Sr., 92, of Victoria, Va., died Sunday, September 27, 2009 at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Va. He was a retired banker for Virginia National/Sovran Bank. He was born April 12, 1917 in Victoria. Charles graduated from Victoria High School and attended Virginia Tech. He was active in the Victoria Baptist Church, the Victoria Fire and Rescue, the Victoria Masonic Lodge and served in various capacities in the Victoria Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Johnson Abbitt; his children, Bonnie A. Branch (Bob) of Moreno Valley, Calif., and Charles I. Abbitt Jr. (Donna) of Asheville, N.C.; his sister Elizabeth A. Bennett of Newport News; thirteen grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. in the Victoria Baptist Church with interment in the Lakeview Cemetery, Victoria. The family requests that memorials be made to the Victoria Fire and Rescue or to the Victoria Baptist Church.

ADKINS, Edna Allen "Bea", of Richmond, daughter of the late Weldon and Edna Allen of Charles City County, entered into the presence of her savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, September 26, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon; one sister and brother. She is survived by four daughters, Edna Dickerson (Louis), Barbara Shaw (David), Gwendolyn Woolfolk and Maude "Beth" Henderson; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson, one sister, five brothers and two sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th Street. Remains will lie in state Wednesday, September 30, at 11:30 a.m. at First Union Baptist Church, 3510 Dill Rd., where funeral services will be held at 12:30. Dr. Millard Boone, interim pastor, Rev. Linwood Jones officiating, Rev. Dr. Burrell A. Smith Jr. eulogist. Interment will be held at Richmond National Veterans Cemetery, Williamsburg Road.


 


 

Abner C. Ferguson 

Sep 29, 2009 DANVILLE — Abner Conrad Ferguson, 84, of 43 Oakridge Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born in Pittsylvania County on Aug. 15, 1925, to James Abner Ferguson and Jannie Mae Lewis Ferguson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Emma F. Horsley; and a brother, Aubrey V. Ferguson. He retired as a supervisor from Dan River Inc., where he worked for more than 40 years. He served in the Army during World War II and received two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. He was a member of the Tree of Life. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Mary Overton Ferguson of the home and formerly of Axton; two daughters, Debra Barker Collins of Danville and Vickie Ferguson of Lynchburg; a brother, Eston Ferguson of Danville; one granddaughter; one grandson; one great-granddaughter; and one great-grandson. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home Westover Chapel with the Rev. Michael Turner officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors by the American Legion, Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and other times at the home.


 


 

BECHT, Regina Gertrude Cogan

BECHT, Regina Gertrude Cogan, 87, left this life peacefully with her family by her side on September 25, 2009. Jean was born on July 14, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York to Gertrude Regina and Paul Francis Cogan. Jean graduated from St. Joseph's College and attended Columbia University graduate school and later taught English. She married U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Joseph Edward Becht on October 1, 1949 and moved to Lexington, Virginia where they raised seven children. Jean was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Lexington Women's Club and the Lexington Garden Club (over 50 years). She enjoyed tennis, field hockey, golf, bridge, travel, her friends and family. Jean was predeceased by her loving husband, Joe of 49 years; her parents, Gertrude and Paul; her brother, Paul; and her sister, Agnes. Jean is survived by her sister, Rosemary Lambert of White Plains, N.Y.; her seven children, Anne Kavanaugh (William), Fernandina, Fla., Joseph Becht (Suzanne), Richmond, Va., John Becht, Richmond, Va., Mary Blalock, Fernandina, Fla., Paul Becht (Audrey), Atlanta, Ga., Clare Semler, Virginia Beach, Va. and Rosemarie Jowdy, Richmond, Va.; 17 grandchildren, Hardee, Jamie, Sarah, Molly Kavanaugh, Lindsey, Richard, Julia, Jeremy Becht, Meredith, Catie, Laura, Stuart Blalock, Cogan, Colin, Megan, Jake Semler and Andy Jowdy Jr.; and four great-grandchildren, Kate, Will, Anna and Hinton Kavanaugh. The family welcomes friends Thursday, October 1, 5 to 7 p.m. at Harrison's Funeral Home with Father Joe D'Auora officiating the Rosary Prayer. The mass funeral service will be held at St. Patrick's Church on Friday, October 2 at 11 a.m. with a private family burial service at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. BOZARD, Mrs. Doris F., 87, of Midlothian, died September 27, 2009. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Louis R. Bozard; three children, Richard F. Bozard and his wife, Kathy Lynn, William L. Bozard and his wife, Margaret, and Kathleen B. Farwell and her husband, David; three grandsons, William L. Bozard Jr., Richard F. Bozard II and Daniel L. Gidick; and three sisters, Helen Barnes (her identical twin), Vera Shaw, and Barbara Coli. Mrs. Bozard was one of eight daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Farrell Fitzpatrick. She was a volunteer at Chippenham Medical Center for 20 years and was a founding member of St. Edward's Catholic Church. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and wife who always put her family first. As well, she was a wonderful homemaker and caregiver. Her remains rest at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1 p.m. Thursday, at St. Edward's Catholic Church, 2700 Dolfield Drive. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. BROOKS, Mrs. Lucille Nora, 93, passed into eternal rest after a brief illness Sunday, September 27, 2009 at her niece's home in Richmond, Va. Mrs. Brooks was born and raised in Charlottesville, Va. At the age of 19 she moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked as an assistant cook in the Roosevelt White House before embarking on a long career (40 years) as a Statistician with the Department of the Navy. She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Clyde" Brooks; and her brothers, Mr. John H. Key Jr. and Henry Gordon Key. Mrs. Brooks leaves to cherish her memory her loving niece, Miss Sandra L. Wayne of Richmond, Va.; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Alberta H. Key of Norfolk, Va.; her niece and nephew, Mrs. Gloria D. Simmons and family of Norfolk, Va., and Mr. John H. Key III and family of Herndon, Va. Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at Bliley's - Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond, Va., from 5 to 7 p.m. A service of remembrance will follow at Bliley's on Thursday, October 1 at 10 a.m. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Suitland, Md. Butler; father, Garland E. Butler Sr.; and sister, Dorothy B. Goff. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Lloyde Sunny Lumpkin Butler; his children, Robert S. Butler Jr. and Daniel B. Butler, both of Richmond, Master Chief Petty Officer, USCG Louis L. Kitchin, of Bellingham, Wash., Frances Cary Ballou and Elizabeth B. Weitzman, both of Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren, Patrick Kitchin, Andrew Kitchin, R. Stuart Butler III, Laura E. Butler, Lucas Weitzman, Evan Weitzman; and one great-grandchild; daughters--in-law, Tina Kitchin, Amy P. Butler; a son-in-law, Kenneth Weitzman; and his beloved and faithful companion, Susie. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War; a retired real estate developer and founder of Butler Realty in Richmond, Va. He was a near 50 year member of the Richmond Association of Realtors and also a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock, Va., the Veterans Republican Club in The Villages, Lake Sumter Men's Club and the National Therapy Dog, Inc. Cole II, William

William M. Cole II VIRGINIA BEACH - Cmdr. William Marchant Cole II, 75, departed this life to be with his Lord Sept., 26, 2009. He died peacefully at home. Born in 1934, he was the son of the late Rear Adm. William M. Cole and Emily Lampe Cole of Virginia Beach. He was a Navy junior, and spent much of his childhood and youth in Virginia Beach and Alexandria. A lifelong sailor, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1957, and served for 24 years as a U.S. Naval officer on both coasts, as well as in Italy and Vietnam. He was an accomplished bluegrass musician, playing the guitar, banjo and mandolin. He was an advocate for Civil War battlefield preservation, a commitment that emerged from his deep interest in military history. In recent years, he and his wife Jane wintered on Kauai, where he made many good friends who shared his interests in golf, local music, and the island's history. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jane; son, William M. Cole III; daughter, Laura C. Hedrick and her husband Steve; daughter, Margaret C. Frankovich and her fiancé Joseph Sampler; daughter, Susan S. Lawrence; and grandsons, Steven D. Hedrick Jr., Tyler B. Hedrick and Robert F. Hedrick. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, at 11 a.m. at Spring Branch Community Church, 1500 Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach. Cmdr. DILLON, Edward "Ned" IV, 74, of Ashland, the son of the late Edward and Eleanor Dillon, passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2009 after a courageous and valiant battle with cancer. He is survived by a son, Dave and wife, Barbara Dillon; two sisters, Eleanor Dillon of Williamsburg and Amanda Taylor and husband, Jim, of Port Hayward, Va; three grandchildren, Danny, Jackie and Tori Dillon; and his loving companion, Taylor Moore. Ned served proudly in the U.S. Army and was very proud of serving on the Board of Hanover Arts and Activities Center, and the board of directors of a family business, E. Dillon & Co. in Swords Creek, Va. He was an avid outdoorsman, a dedicated member of the Float Fisherman of Virginia and Coastal Canoeists. DILLSON, Zanny Dosier Leach, 56, a Marietta, Georgia, resident for 23 years, died Friday, September 25, 2009 at Emory University Hospital from complications with leukemia and brain surgery. She was born on February 25, 1953 in Monroe, Michigan. She and Michael Dillson were married on February 17, 1989 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She was an active member of Saint Catherine's Episcopal Church in Marietta. She was extremely active as a member of the local theater community as an actress and a costumer. She served on the Sprayberry High School Chorus Board for several years. She also was an organizer of literary conventions in the Atlanta and Chattanooga areas for over 25 years. She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Michael; daughter and son-in-law, Lori Leach-Forster and Denny Forster, Fort Oglethorpe; daughter and son-in-law, Lani Brooks-Haymes and Malcolm Haymes, Marietta; son, Andrew Leach, Acworth; daughter, Emily Dillson, Marietta; and son, Alexander Dillson, Marietta; her grandchildren, Tyler McAlister, Niko McAlister, Bailey Brooks and Morgan Haymes; a brother, James Dosier, Marietta; two sisters, Kathy Canada and Tara Carter, Richmond, Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sep 29, 2009 The funeral for Diana Dickenson Rakes, 59, of Ridgeway, who died Sept. 24, 2009, at her home, was held at 11 a.m. Monday at Grace Baptist Church with Pastor Dennis Wingate and Pastor David Cuthbertson officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park. Visitation was at the church for one hour before the funeral Monday and other times at the home, 185 Cattle Drive, Ridgeway. She was born in Ridgeway on Dec. 29, 1949, to Kenneth Dickenson and Margaret "Goldie" Boyd Dickenson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Danny Dickenson. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Calvin Arlie Rakes of the home; a stepson, Anthony Rakes of Ridgeway; a step-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Norman was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 24, 1940. He was a graduate in 1958 from Thomas Jefferson High School. He worked in the insurance industry for 30 years, and rose to vice president of Continental Insurance Company, Special Risk Management Division before his final retirement in 1997. Norman was a resident of Detroit, Mich., Cleveland, Ohio, Chicago, Illinois, Los Angeles, Calif., Dallas, Texas, and his final place of residence at 5313 Downy Lane, Richmond, Va. Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph A. Janowski and Isabella Bernadette Janowski. He is survived by his brothers, Donald and Dennis; their wives, Mary and Joyce; and several first cousins in Detroit, Mich.; his ex-wife, Mary K. Gratz; and two sons, Jeffrey McBee and Phillip L. Janowski. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Terry Janowski Smith, Greg Janowski, Michael Janowski, Jennifer Janowski and Danielle Janowski; his grandchildren, Jeffrey McBee Jr. and Sarah McBee; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great- nieces and great-great nephews. Johnston was born in the Mountain Valley area of Henry County on Nov. 24, 1927, to Herman and Rachel Eanes Johnston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Lynn Lane; a brother, Morris Johnston; and a sister, Bernice J. Brown. He retired from Lowe's of Martinsville as a truck driver with 20 years of service, having won the "Safe Driver Award" for 10 years with the company. Johnston was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Ridgeway, where he was a trustee, Sunday school director, Sunday school teacher and deacon at different times. He was a former member of the Knights of Pythias, Patrick Henry Lodge 82, and Fontaine Ruritan Club. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Verna Hughes Johnston of the home; two sons, Roger Johnston of Roanoke and Jeffrey Johnston of Rocky Mount; two brothers, Harry Reeves Johnston of Mountain Valley and Charles Johnston of Ridgeway; and two grandchildren. Marchant Charles Lincoln Marchant, 77, husband of Frances Marie (Brown) Marchant, of 401 Linden Drive, Staunton, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009 in Augusta Health in Fishersville. He was born March 2, 1932 in Smyth County, a son of the late John Edward and Carrie Mae (Dean) Marchant. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville as a purchasing officer. He was a member of the Staunton-Augusta VFW Post 2216 and a member of Ridgeview Baptist Church for 42 years. He will be remembered by his only granddaughter, Madison, for his funny sense humor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry E. Marchant and Joseph L. Marchant. Surviving in addition to his wife, to whom he married on June 4, 1954, are two sons, Bill Marchant of Ohio and Brandon Marchant of Staunton; a daughter, C. Sep 29, 2009 Nora Lee Millner Martin, 68, of New York and formerly of Martinsville, died Aug. 2, 2009, at New York Presbyterian Hospital. She was born in Martinsville on Aug. 13, 1940, was reared in Martinsville and graduated from Albert Harris High School in 1958. After graduating from high school, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in medical technology. She began working at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in the operating room. She later transferred to the department of urology at New York Presbyterian Hospital. She became a member of the Convent Avenue Baptist Church in 1964, where she served on the Missionary Usher Board and the homeless ministry until her health failed. She served for many years as a Girl Scout leader. Surviving are a brother, Lewis E. Duckett of New York; one niece; one nephew; and a number of relatives in Martinsville. The funeral was held Aug. 6 at Convent Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. James Logan Jr. officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, N.Y. Sauvan; a daughter, Teresa Lynn Willis and husband Stephen of Norfolk; stepmother, Dorothy Snyder of Virginia Beach; several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, with the Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Wheeler, and is survived by three daughters, Charlotte Donovan and Bobbie Young of Mechanicsville, and Janice Naito of Roseburg, Oregon. She is also survived by one brother and a sister of Durham, N.C., and by seven grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson and one great-grandson. Zucker, Sylvia

Sylvia Feldman Zucker VIRGINIA BEACH - Sylvia Feldman Zucker passed away Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 2, 1917 to the late Sarah and Sam Feldman. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Max and her two brothers, Andy Farrell and Sidney Feldman. Mrs. Zucker's life work was guided by her desire to expose special children to learning and working situations to develop each individual to its fullest potential. In 1961, she was hired as executive director of the Peninsula Association for Retarded Citizens. She began with a fundraising Hope Fund of 16 cents from her own pocket. With hard work, state and federal grants and civic groups and private donations she built the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Regional Center. Through her acquaintance with the family of Chester Carlson, inventor of Xerox, she raised the funds to begin construction of the facility which housed a preschool, vocational center, residential cottages and summer camp. This campus was a memorial dedicated to Mrs. Doriss Carlson's mother, Sarah Bonwell Hudgins. In addition, Mrs. Zucker was fortunate to have board members who were dedicated and supported her every endeavor. Upon her retirement in 1978, the Administration Building was named in her honor. Mrs. Zucker is survived by a daughter, Pearl Taylor and her husband Richard and a son, Roy Zucker; four grandchildren, Shawn Taylor Zelman and her husband Jeff, Stephanie Lichty and her husband Jeff, Jason and Lauren Zucker; seven great- grandchildren, Jay, Abby, Molly and Joshua Lichty and Taylor, Sawyer and Skylar Zelman. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Chevra Thilim Cemetery on George Washington Highway and Frederick Boulevard officiated by Rabbi Michael Panitz. The family will have the Meal of Consolation at the home of Stephanie and Jeff Lichty, 2537 Nestlebrook Trail, Virginia Beach. Shiva will be observed at the home of Pearl and Richard Taylor, 2834 Loveliness Court, Virginia Beach, Wednesday evening, Thursday and Friday.
