Rogallo, Francis

Francis M. Rogallo SOUTHERN SHORES - Southern Shores engineer, inventor, flight pioneer, loving husband and devoted father, Francis Melvin "Rog" Rogallo passed away peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at his Southern Shores residence. He was 97. Rog, born Jan. 27, 1912, in Sanger, Calif., was the son of the late Mathieu Rogallo and Marie Dajas Rogallo Betzold, and stepson of the late William Frederick Betzold. Rog was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Sugden Rogallo; brothers, Matthew Rogallo, Harold Rogallo and Vernon Rogallo; stepsister, Margaret Betzold Pollock; and stepbrother, Curtis Betzold. He graduated from Sanger High School in 1928 and went on to graduate with an advanced degree in mechanical engineering and aeronautics in 1935, one of the first to do so, from Stanford University. After completing his college studies, Rog joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), later to become the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), in 1936 in Hampton, Va., and embarked on what would be a long and distinguished career in aeronautics. In 1939, he married the love of his life Gertrude Sugden Rogallo, a young educator from the Hampton Roads area. The couple raised four children: Marie, Robert, Carol and Frances, and celebrated 68 years of marriage together. While Rog was working as an aeronautical engineer in the NACA wind tunnels and Gertrude was busy as a homemaker, they actively pursued at home their passion and dream of creating a vehicle to make flight affordable and available to everyone. While pursuing their dream, the couple met the legendary inventor Orville Wright who fueled their spirit of invention. Francis held several patents from his work at NACA and NASA, but was proudest of the one he and Gertrude filed in 1948 as co-inventors of a "flexible kite" based on their joint efforts at home in their leisure time. The device is one of the simplest airfoils ever created - a wing totally without stiffeners creating lift and carrying payloads. This Rogallo Wing has made possible many sports including hang gliding, paragliding, sport parachuting, stunt kite flying, and kite boarding enjoyed by millions of people. The Rogallos are recognized worldwide for their contributions to sport aviation and have been honored in Japan, Australia, Switzerland, Germany and France. Honors in this country for Francis include recognition by the National Air and Space Museum "for outstanding achievement in aerospace technology," presentation of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from the State of North Carolina as one of the 100 aviation heroes by Senator Elizabeth Dole at the Century of Flight ceremonies in 2003, and induction of both into the Paul Garber Shrine at the Wright Brothers National Memorial. The couple's portrait hangs today in the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, N.C. Rog also was an inductee of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame and of the Public Education Hall of Fame of the California School Boards Association, in the inaugural class in 1984, and both are honored with a pylon at the Century of Flight Monument in Kitty Hawk. In 1967, Gertrude and Francis were lured to the beauty of the Outer Banks and purchased a summer cottage here. Later, they relocated to Kitty Hawk permanently where they were fixtures at the local aviation group meetings and gliding events. They embraced the Outer Banks community by becoming active members of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and later founding members of All Saints Episcopal Church, with Rog joining the First Flight Society, the Civil Air Patrol, and the Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department. Left to cherish the memory and spirit of Francis and Gertrude Rogallo are their four children: Marie "Bunny" Rogallo Samuels and husband Phillip, Carol Rogallo Sparks and husband Norman, all of Southern Shores, Frances Rogallo MacEachren and husband Alan of Boalsburg, Pa., and Robert Sugden Rogallo and wife Sarah "Sallie" of Los Altos Hills, Calif. Rog also leaves three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren who loved him very much and will miss him dearly. A celebration of Rog's life and achievements will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church in Southern Shores Sunday, Sept. 20, at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be forwarded to the Rogallo Foundation, P.O. Box 1839, Nags Head, NC 27959. Suter, Cary Grayson

SUTER, Cary Grayson, MD, of Ivy, Va., died unexpectedly and painlessly from a cardiac arrest Monday, August 31, 2009. He was to celebrate his 90th birthday on October 9, 2009. He was born in Bridgewater, Va. to David Irenaeus Suter and Elizabeth M. Dundore Suter. Cary was raised in Ft. Defiance, Va. and graduated from Hampden-Sydney College and then the University of Virginia School of Medicine. While attending UVA, he met his wife, Anna Deane Carr, and they were married on his last day of medical school, May 3, 1947. His beloved "AD" predeceased Cary in April of 2006. Cary's medical training included internship in Birmingham, Ala., Internal Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, back to UVA for Psychiatry and Neurology, and finally the Mayo Clinic for Neurology and EEG. He was then recruited to the Medical College of Virginia in 1959 as a Professor of Neurology and became founding Chairman of the Department of Neurology. Alongside his medical practice, Cary developed a highly regarded training program and EEG/EMG Lab. In 1972, he launched the annual Hans Berger EEG/ Neurophysiology Symposium hosted to this day at MCV. He was a repeated recipient of Resident Teaching Awards and introduced the practice of audio-video taping patients with classic neurologic syndromes, creating an extensive video teaching library. He collaborated with specialists from around the country to establish criteria for diagnosing Brain Death and co-authored "The Atlas of EEG in Coma and Cerebral Death" in 1976. After his retirement as Professor Emeritus of Neurology, Cary presented his History of the Hans Berger Symposium at the 35th annual meeting in May of 2007. During his time in Richmond, Cary and his family were active members at St Matthew's Episcopal Church where he served on vestry. Later, he and AD were members at St Paul's Episcopal Church in downtown Richmond. When they retired to Ivy in 2002, Cary and AD became members of St Paul's Ivy Episcopal Church. Throughout his life, Cary pursued his love of reading, especially the works of Thoreau, and of lively debate with one and all on any topic you dared choose. With chainsaw ever ready, Cary relished cutting firewood from his own properties, the logs destined for large roaring fires on the home hearth. He took delight in his flower and vegetable gardening, and in watching the birds at the numerous feeders he kept well stocked. Cary enjoyed all the bounties of Virginia's four seasons and was an authority on the mixing of a proper gin and tonic. He was blessed with an acute mind and sharp wit to the end of his days. Cary is survived by his son, Dr. Cary Carr Suter and daughter-in-law, Dr. Katherine Ganz, of Corrales, N.M.; his daughter, Deane Begiebing and son-in-law, Mark Begiebing, and grandson, Lyle Begiebing, of White Hall, Va.; sisters-in-law, Helen Suter and Tina Carr; nieces and nephews, David Suter, Rebecca Lindsay, Martha Livingston, Betty Feldman, Sarah Splaun, Diana Deane Carr, Linda Carr-Kraft, Cary Carr Cox, Martha Randolph Carr, and Dabney Jefferson Carr IV; and a devoted "daughter," Vere Brathwaite of Bridgetown, Barbados. The family thanks his physicians, especially Dr. William Hammond, and his in-home therapist, Becky Williams. Cary considered himself fortunate to remain at his Ivy residence in his later years, and would not have had this pleasure without the elder friendly customer service of area businesses and priceless dedication of those who took care of him, his home, and his garden. Special thanks to Hannah Price, Clasteen Gray, Ray and Edna Bishop, Beaver Runkle, and JB Runkle for their many years of kind service, and to neighbors, Zip and Alyson Maupin, and their children, Emily and Will. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, September 26, 2009 at St. Paul's Ivy Episcopal Church, with interment following in the churchyard. The family invites guests to gather at Cary's home afterwards to share and celebrate memories. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Thoreau Society, Cary G. Find out more. Stafford, Eva Price View/Sign Guest Book Eva Price Stafford Eva Price Stafford of Bedford went to meet our Lord and her recently departed husband in the early evening of Thursday, Sept. 2, 2009. "Eva Jane" was born in the foothills of southwest Virginia town of Saltville. The daughter of a miner, she lived in Saltville until finishing high school and then attended the Lewis Gale Nursing School as well as Hollins College. She then moved to Roanoke to marry a young army man (Bill Stafford) who had just returned from the Korean War, and there started her family and career as a registered nurse. Shortly thereafter, the couple bought an old log-cabin farmhouse in Body Camp, which became her home for the remainder of her life. For the next almost 50 years, when not "fixing up the house," Eva applied her passion for nursing working at some point in every hospital within 50 miles of her home, including Lewis Gale, Roanoke Memorial, Community, Bedford Memorial and Lynchburg General hospitals. Eva always made time for the occasional neighbor that may need help with a minor injury, ailment, diabetes shot or dressing change and freely dispensed her advice along with her loving care. She spoke often and most fondly of the six years she spent as an occupational nurse at the Big Island Paper Mill. Throughout her career, she also assisted her husband with his Insurance Agency on South Street in Bedford and was a licensed realtor for a short time. Her time as a realtor, however, only reinforced her call to nursing, which she promptly returned to. Eva returned to college several years ago, attending the University of Virginia as a day student to complete her degree in nursing, completing her studies just in time for retirement. Eva is also well-known throughout Bedford County for her music. Eva was an accomplished pianist and found great joy in playing toe-tapping gospel tunes on the piano while surrounded by singing friends. In her younger years, she sang in a gospel trio that visited churches and revivals throughout Central Virginia, where she sometimes included her very reluctant young sons in the performance. Eva was invited to play often in churches, nursing homes and other venues right up until her death. Almost every church in Bedford County has at some point resounded with the lively music from Eva's piano playing. But one thing that brought Eva the most pride and joy was her family and particularly her grandchildren. Eva is proceeded in death by her first and only husband of over 52 years, William Hurt (Bill) Stafford. She is survived by three sons, Leonard Stafford, Matthew Stafford and Bill Stafford II, and one daughter, Angela Stafford Turman, and their spouses. She is also survived by her two granddaughters and four grandsons. She will be missed by many. Anyone wishing to submit a gift could consider a donation to the Moneta Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 497, Moneta, VA 24121. A service to celebrate Eva's life will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford, with the Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends following the service until 8:30 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Bedford.
