ABBOTT, Gale, 85, of Midlothian, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2009, after a long illness. Gale was born in Providence, R.I., to Eugene and Elsie Abbott, but spent her youth and much of her adult life on Long Island, N.Y., with some years in Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Basking Ridge, N.J., before moving to Virginia. Gale is survived by her husband of 61 years, Donald C. Abbott; her children, Donna Livesay and her husband, Woody, of Richmond, Paul Abbott and his wife, Donna, of Basking Ridge, N.J., and Douglas Abbott and his wife, Vanessa, of Washington, D.C.; seven grandchildren, two great-granddaughters; and a brother, William Abbott of Greenbrook, N.J. She was preceded in death by her brother, Douglas. Gale was a 1946 graduate of Westhampton College, University of Richmond, where she majored in Math and Biology and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She was also a member of the field hockey team. Following graduation, Gale was employed by Equitable Life in New York City for four years before leaving a promising career to be a full-time homemaker. Over the years, Gale, an accomplished pianist, played piano for Sunday school as well as teaching classes and was active in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and other volunteer activities. She was known for her skill with her knitting needles and sewing machines. There are still labels around saying "Handmade by Mims", her in-family nickname. "Mims" spent her life devoted to family and friends and her faith was an inspiration to all who knew her. The family wants to thank the people at Southerland Place and AseraCare Hospice for their care and kindness. A burial will be held at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Jimmy Joe Barton, 62, of Radford, Va., passed away on Monday, September 28, 2009, at the New River Valley Medical Center. He was a veteran of the Vietnam Era having served in the United States Air Force as a mechanic on the F105 and was based at Takhli Air Force Base in Thailand. He was a lifelong resident of Radford and a graduate of Radford University. He was a local businessman, friend and father who was always quick with a joke and a smile. He was definitely one of a kind. He was preceded in death by his parents, Winfred Elijah and Katherine VanHoy Barton. CHAMBLISS, Mr. Russell Henry Jr., died at 82 on Monday, September 28, 2009. He was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Henry Chambliss of Norfolk, Virginia; and his two sisters of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane Williams Chambliss; and their three children, Russell Warren Chambliss and his wife, Ann, of Birmingham, Alabama, Patty Chambliss Whitten and her husband, Bobby, and John Randolph Chambliss and his wife, Lindsay, all of Richmond. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Russell Warren Chambliss Jr. and his wife, Rebecca, Mary Margaret Chambliss, Jane Chambliss Drennen and her husband, Daniel, Frank Mason "Beau" Chambliss and his wife, Mary Russell, and their daughter, Julia, all of Birmingham, Alabama, Sarah Whitten Cochran and her husband, Zach, and their children, Eliza and Preston, Amy Catherine Whitten, Mary Margaret Whitten, Henry Boyd Chambliss, Gray Williams Chambliss and Carter Randolph Chambliss, all of Richmond. After graduating Maury High School in Norfolk, Virginia, he entered the Army, where he was stationed in Germany towards the end of World War II and served on the ski patrol in the 3rd Infantry Division. After the war, he graduated from The College of William and Mary, and entered a 40-year career in the paper industry, which brought him to Richmond as Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Oxford Paper division of Ethyl Corporation. He retired as the owner of Richmond Paper Company. Besides his family, his most cherished achievement came after retirement, when he became the Executive Vice President for America's First Freedom Council; where he led an effort that ended up in the Oval Office with President George H. W. Bush signing a proclamation declaring January 16th as National Religious Freedom Day, and led to the construction of the First Freedom Center in Richmond, Virginia. He was a member of the Sons of the Revolution, The Kiwanis Club, The Commonwealth Club, The Country Club of Virginia and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry. He also served on a variety of public and private boards for both civic and corporate organizations. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all of the nurses and staff in the Special Care Unit at Cedarfield for making his last days comfortable. Janice Marguerite (Pete) Sink Campbell, 97, and a native of Roanoke, Va., died at Nazareth Home in Louisville, Ky., on Tuesday, September 29, 2009. She was the daughter of the late John W. and Berosia F. Sink. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Ambrose Campbell; a son, Timothy Joseph; a grandson, James K. (Jamie) Dunn Jr.; two sisters, Lula Pring and Mildred Cammer; and two brothers, Carl B. Sink and Raymond Sink. She is survived by three sons, Thomas W. She was a member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church for over 50 years. A charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America, she held several offices. She was an associate member of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth for over 30 years. She was also active in Catholic School PTA's for over 30 years. Her involvement in senior activities included Vice President of the Senior's Club at Fairington Apartments. It was during this time she performed for the Senior Olympics and entertained many clubs in the Roanoke area, performing her dance routines, including "Swan Lake," "The Charleston," and "Clogging." One of her favorite retirement pastimes was attending Kentucky Derby events, one of which she won third place in the famous Kentucky Derby Hat Contest., will be observed. Clark, 102, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died Monday, September 21, 2009., She was born on May 1, 1907, in Albemarle County, a daughter of the late Charles Franklin and Susie Smith Franklin. She was the widow of Charles J. Clark. A daughter, Frances Clark Reid and a son in-law, Earl Reid, preceded her in death., Marie was a graduate of Jefferson Elementary School, went to training school in Gloucester, Virginia, and was employed for approximately 20 years in housekeeping at the Martha Jefferson Hospital. Her favorite pastime was working in her garden. She grew a variety of beautiful flowers and it was very apparent that she possessed a "green thumb". She was also a nature lover that had a soft spot for stray cats, and a great conversationalist who loved to reminisce about her life that was also a history lesson. Marie Clark was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witness in 1970, as a dedicated servant she often enjoyed talking to others about the bible., Her survivors include one son, Charles A. Lonnie Onimus Clark III VIRGINIA BEACH - Lonnie Onimus Clark III, 66, known to most as "Butch," passed away Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. Butch was born in Parris Island, S.C., Aug. 13, 1943 to the late Dr. L.O. and Carolyn Clark Jr. He was a graduate of Virginia Beach High School and attended UNC at Chapel Hill. A member of the Princess Anne Country Club, Butch was a golfer who loved hunting and his many friends. Dr. John B. Claytor Jr., of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2009. He was born on January 3, 1915, to Dr. John B. and Roberta Claytor. He graduated from Lucy Addison High School in 1932, Knoxville College in 1936, and Meharry Medical School in 1940. His internship at Homer Phillips in St. Louis was interrupted when he was called to active duty in the Army. Major Claytor served in New Guinea and participated in the invasion of the Philippines., After the war, he returned to Homer Phillips to complete his residency in General Surgery and Obstetrics/ Gynecology. In 1949, Dr. Claytor joined his father and three brothers to form one of the earliest group practices in the Roanoke Valley: The Claytor Memorial Clinic. The new building was dedicated in the memory of his mother who dreamed that her husband and sons would practice together. Dr. J.B. was passionate about maternal and child health, devoting much of his time to indigent mothers-to-be. He delivered most of the minority babies in the area., He served at Burrell Memorial Hospital, co-founded by his father, as Chief of Staff, Chief of Obstetrics/ Gynecology, Chair of Tissue Committee and Board of Directors. He served the Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington, Va., as a consultant in Obstetrics., In 1955, he was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists. Dr. Claytor served on the Board of Planned Parenthood, Citizen Advisory Committee and various Housing Projects/ Gainsboro. During the 1960's, he was a member of the Interracial Relations committee that worked to integrate Roanoke in a peaceful manner., Following the death of his father and brother, Dr. Claytor left his solo practice and joined the Roanoke City Health Department as Director of Medical Programs., Preceding him in death was his wife, Ruth Claytor; son, John B. DEITRICK, Jacob Lynn "Jack" "Jake," 94, of Short Pump, died Saturday, September 26, 2009 at his home. A native of Henrico County, Jacob was born to Claudius Perry Deitrick and Nellie Cocke Deitrick on January 20, 1915. He was a longtime member of Deep Run Baptist Church and later Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Mr. Deitrick was an employee of VEPCO, retiring in 1977. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Virginia Schomburg Deitrick; as well as five of his siblings and a grandchild. Survivors include daughters, Beverly D. Light (the late John E. Oct 1, 2009 BLACKSBURG — Dorothy "Dottie" Louise Minnick Gray, 64, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born Nov. 27, 1944, in Montgomery County to Mamie Vaught Minnick of Bassett and Elmore Cecil Minnick. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her son, Brian Keith Gray. She worked at the National Bank of Blacksburg and retired from Virginia Tech with many years of service. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are two sisters, Nellie M. Handy of Radford and Pattie M. Jefferson of Bassett; two brothers, Raymond "Butch" Minnick of Bassett and Elmore Dean Minnick of Martinsville; one grandson; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at noon Friday at McCoy Funeral Home with Pastor John M. Hopkins officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Christiansburg. She was born April 24, 1921, in Hillsville to Joseph Jeremiah Burnette and Mahala Turman Burnette. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph J. Mozick; a sister, Beatrice Burnette; and a brother, Parsons Burnette. She had worked as a sales clerk at Faggs Drug Store in Martinsville and the Collinsville Shoe Center. HAMMETT, Erika Uhl, 75, of White Stone, died Tuesday, September 29, 2009. She was born in Portland, Maine, and was raised and graduated from high school in New Jersey. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees in Mathematics from Ohio University. During her professional career, she was an instructor of Mathematics at Ohio University and Mathematics Department Head at Ranney School in Shrewsbury, N.J., for 20 years. She was a former hospice volunteer and member of Rappahannock River Yacht Club. Her favorite pastimes were reading, puzzles and traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. She was preceded in death by a son, Gary W. Hammett. Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Warren G. Hammett; a daughter and son-in-law, Devi Hammett and Chad Morton of New Jersey; a sister, Marlene Madura of North Carolina. Services will be private. HARWOOD, Thomas P. Jr. "Tommy", age 80, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Richmond, Va., died on September 27. He was a retired judge of the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC), where he served actively for 19 years from 1973 to 1992. Prior to his election to the SCC, Judge Harwood served nine years as a member of the Industrial Commission (now the Workers Compensation Commission) of Virginia. Tommy was born in Green Bank, West Va., and grew up in Crewe and Saluda, Va. He graduated in 1950 from the Virginia Military Institute, where he was a member of the Class of 1950B. He was a Distinguished Military Graduate, recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, and four-year monogram winner in baseball as a pitcher. He entered the Army in June 1950 and served on active duty through August 1953. An infantry platoon leader in the 7th Cavalry Regiment, he was wounded in October 1951 and hospitalized until May 1952. Judge Harwood entered the University of Virginia School of Law in 1953. He was a member of the Editorial Board of the Virginia Law Review, Chairman of the University Judiciary Committee, and Chancellor of Sigma Nu Phi Legal Fraternity. His fraternities include Kappa Alpha Order, ODK, and Sigma Nu Phi. Tommy was an elder in the Presbyterian Church for 49 years, a former moderator of the Hanover Presbytery, and a former member of the Richmond Salvation Army Advisory Board. A judicial member of the Bar Association of the City of Richmond, Virginia State Bar, and Virginia Bar Association, Judge Harwood served as president of two regulatory conferences and as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Regulatory Institute at Ohio State University, which he chaired from 1990 to 1992. He and his wife, Mary Virginia, were married for 53 years, and Tommy said each one got better. He is survived by Mary Virginia; daughter, Sally; son Thomas and his wife, Elizabeth, son, Hunter and his wife, Susan; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. ROY LEE HALE, JR. STUART-Roy Lee Hale, Jr., 88, departed this life on September 17, 2009. He was born January 2, 1921, in Floyd County to the late Roy L. Hale and Bessie Thomas Hale. He served in the United States Marine Corps in both World War II and the Korean Conflict, retiring as a gunnery sergeant. He is survived by: his wife, Ann West Hale, of the home; his daughter, Valerie C. Hale, of Belton, South Carolina; a grandson, Richard Bryan Black, of Greenville, South Carolina; a granddaughter, Lorie Lynn Oliver, of Greer, South Carolina; a sister, Ann Davis Whitesell, of Roanoke; a niece, Belinda Butler, of Waxhall, South Carolina; a stepson, Matt Corbett, of Sunbury, Pennsylvania; and a stepson, Chris Corbett, of Stuart. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Whitesell Anderson, of Mineral Springs, North Carolina. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he co-owned a dairy farm in Riner and a tobacco farm in Floyd County. An abiding passion was the game of golf, and he served as a club pro in California and at Great Oaks Country Club in Floyd. He mentored a number of young golfers who became outstanding players. He had a wide-ranging curiosity about life, and read voraciously. Horses, dogs, and animals in general always had a trainer and friend in Roy Hale. In accordance with Roy's wishes, there will be no formal memorial services. Robert Wayne Horstman VIRGINIA BEACH - Robert Wayne "Bob" Horstman, 55, cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, went home to be with the Lord Sept. 29, 2009. A longtime resident of Virginia Beach, he was a member of the International Longshoreman's Association, Local 1624, where he worked for the past 13 years. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Debra Horstman; son, Jason Horstman; daughter, Katrina Davenport; five grandsons, Dylan, Nicholas, Alexander, Cody and Shane; two sisters, Carol Willoughby and Marilyn Arrage; father-in-law, Charles Campbell; sister-in-law, Linda Meehan; two brothers-in-law, Charles G. Campbell and Kent Campbell; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Preceding him in death were his mother, Joyce Louise Horstman; father, Delbert Henry Horstman; and his mother-in-law, Shirley Campbell. Bob had a wonderful sense of humor and a kind and loving heart. His favorite thing to do in life was to listen to his grandson, Dylan, play the guitar. They both loved music and they went to many concerts all over the region together. In tribute to his grandfather, Dylan will be playing one of their favorite songs at the funeral. Bob was a member of Rock Church in Virginia Beach. He gave his heart to the Lord in 1980 and he found great comfort in Him throughout his adult life. His love for God and his family is his legacy. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. He was a 1944 graduate of Maury High School and 1950 graduate of The College of William & Mary. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, 1944-1945. LAZANSKY, Bessie, 96, passed away Monday, September 28, 2009 at Lehigh Valley Hospital. Born in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of Josef and Marie (Majercik) Polak. Her family moved back to their home country, Czechoslovakia, when she was a young teenager. She was tested with learning a new language and culture. In her new country, she met her husband of 58 years, Van Lazansky, who passed away in November 2002. She lived in Czechoslovakia throughout the German occupation and general ordeal of World War II. After the war when the political climate of the country changed, she and her husband made the hard choice to leave (escape) with their young daughter, never to see their parents again. They fled into Canada and eventually settled down in Atlanta, Ga., where she started all over again. Her husband's work took them north to New York where she lived until spending her final days in Allentown. She was strong-willed and hard-working regarding every endeavor and challenge faced. Bessie was a great cook, loved to travel and spend time in her garden. She was dedicated to her family and will be missed. Survivors include son, Robert and his wife, Wendie, of Macungie; daughter, Eve Tschantz and her husband, James, of Midlothian, Va.; grandchildren, Jennifer Tschantz of Washington, D.C, Amy Troxell of Chesterfield, Va., Joseph Lazansky of Macungie, Timothy Lazansky of West Chester, and Tori Tschantz of Midlothian, Va.; also four great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. LEWIS, Zannette Eloise, age 63 years, of Hamden, Connecticut, departed this life on September 25, 2009. Zannette was born July 19, 1946 in Richmond, Virginia, to her loving parents, Gladys Elizabeth Lewis of Richmond, Virginia, and the late Otto Ellis Lewis. She is survived by her mother, her loving son; and granddaughters, Tchad Jemahl Moore and Sofiya Jess Z'Oya Moore of Silver Spring, Maryland; as well as her brother, Otto Ellis Lewis Jr. of Silver Spring; and her sister, Sandra Elizabeth Lewis of Los Angeles. "Z", as she was known by many in the community, was an active member of many organizations, to which she willingly gave her talents, her strength, and her life. Some of the organizations that benefited most from her service include the New Haven Chapter of Links, Inc., the Arts Council of Greater New Haven, the New Haven Historical Society, the National Council of Negro Women, the Astrological Society of Connecticut, and the Yale University Peabody Museum. Z worked at the Connecticut State Department of Higher Education as the New Haven Coordinator of the GEAR UP Project. As Coordinator, she helped increase the number of low-income students prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. Zannette has been a source of wisdom and a force of goodness for the many communities she has willingly served over the years of her too-short life. She will leave a lasting impression for many years to come. Her remains rest at the W.S. She was born to the late Henry and Ella Johnson and was the widow of the late Joseph J. Land. She was a member of Third Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She was employed at Portsmouth General Hospital for more than 25 years. She leaves to cherish her beautiful and loving memory five daughters, Ella Outland (Richard), Loretta Loveless, Deborah Brown (Ray) and Patricia Sheppard, all of Portsmouth, and Hope Ward (Nathaniel) of Chesapeake; two adopted daughters, Meloney Urquhart (Herbert) of Franklin and Cassandra Miller (Barry) of Sicklerville, N.J.; one son, Ronald Sheppard of Waverly, Va. Also to cherish her memory are three brothers, Randolph Johnson (Maxine) of Gurdon, Ark., Rudolph Johnson (Ida) of Elizabeth City, N.C., William Earl Johnson of Durham, N.C.; one sister, Bessie Gatling of Portsmouth; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. NEWMAN, William F., 89, of Lakewood Manor, died Tuesday, September 29, 2009. He was born in Norfolk, Va., son of the late James Cleveland Newman and Kate Berry Darnaby Newman. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Dorothy Miller Andrew of Altavista, Va. He was preceded in death by his brother, James Darnaby Newman. Mr. Newman served during WWII as an officer in the U.S. Army. He was a retired mechanical engineer with Reynolds Metals Company. He was a Life Member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and a 1940 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, where he and his wife were named members of Ut Prosim. He was a member of Westhampton United Methodist Church for 57 years, where he was a former chairman of the Administrative Board and former trustee and former president of the Men's Club and the Yokefellow Class. Mr. Newman was a member of American Legion Post 84, the Sons of the Confederacy, and the Sons of the American Revolution. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, October 3, 2009 in the Simms Center at Lakewood Manor, 1900 Lauderdale Drive, Richmond. Interment will be private. Betty Boyd Pusey, 69, of Blacksburg, Va., lost her courageous six-year battle with ovarian cancer on Sunday, September 27, 2009. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Robert Hollis Pusey; her daughter, Elizabeth P. Brown and son-inlaw, Michael W. Brown, and granddaughters, Haley and Delaney, all of Virginia Beach, Va.; her son, Robert Boyd Pusey, of Johnson City, Tenn.; and twins, Brian Thomas Pusey, of Blacksburg, and Eleanor Louise Pusey, of Wilmington, N.C.; sister, Nancy B. Bradley and brotherin-law, George E. Bradley, of Lewisburg, Tenn.; three aunts; two nephews; and several cousins. Betty was born and raised in Lewisburg, Tenn., and was preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Thomas Boyd, and her father, Oscar Stephens Boyd. She graduated from the University of Tennessee with B.S. and M.S. degrees in home economics. She moved to Virginia in 1963 to teach home economics at Radford University. She retired from teaching in 1967 to be a full-time mother and homemaker. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She enjoyed making friends and developed many long-lasting relationships. She was an active member of the Blacksburg Church of Christ. Michael Edward Quesenberry, 52, of Riner, Va., beloved son, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2009. Michael grew up in Riner and after graduating from Auburn High School in 1975, spent the rest of his life in the area because of how much he loved it and the community. He was a friend to almost every person he came across, always willing to lend a helping hand and he touched more lives than he was aware of., Preceding him in death was his mother, Shirley Chafin Quesenberry. REID, Joseph Kelly Jr., 79, of Richmond, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sheriff J.K. Reid and Sabrie Williams Reid of Plymouth, N.C. Survivors include his three sons, Joseph Kelly Reid III and his wife, Carter, Robert Forrester Reid, and Justin Gregory Reid and his fiancee, Aubrie Lewis; his grandchildren, Robert Archer Reid, Helen Stanard Reid, Katherine Carter Reid, Robert Williams Reid and Braelyn Kelly Reid, all of Richmond. He is also survived by his devoted brother, Enoch Spencer Reid Sr. and family of Greenville, N.C.; and a sister, Gracelyn Reid Graves of Eufaula, Ala. He was raised in Plymouth, N.C., where he served as a Deputy Sheriff under his father. He is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. After leaving the Corps, he graduated from Auburn University and entered a career in management consulting of over forty years, working with private and public enterprises across the county, as well as serving a term as Deputy Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Virginia. After retirement, he worked with his youngest sons in two local logistics companies. He will be remembered as a proud and dedicated father, grandfather "G-Pop" and Marine. Oct 1, 2009 The funeral for Tesco Tilley Dalton, 88, of Martinsville, who died Sept. 29, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be at 2 p.m. today at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home before the service today. She was born March 5, 1921, in Lawsonville, N.C. (Stokes County) to Frank Tilley and Cora Lawson Tilley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Noel Dalton; three sisters, Eula Sigmon, Una Mae Kelley and Sterling Beasley; and five brothers, Hassell, Roscoe, Claude, Tommy and Eldridge Tilley. She retired from Pannill Knitting Co. in 1980, and she was a member of Old Center Primitive Baptist Church, where she served as treasurer. Robert Lowe Taylor, Jr. Robert Lowe Taylor, Jr., age 80 of Warrenton, Va. died Sept. 28, 2009 at the Fauquier Hospital. He was born on Nov. 18, 1928 in Washington, D.C. a son of the late Robert L. Taylor, Sr. and Mabel Truslow Taylor. Bob was retired from the Central Intelligence Agency. He was a long-time member of the Warrenton Baptist Church, the Odd Fellows Charity Lodge #27 in Warrenton and was an active volunteer for 17 years with the Fauquier Habitat for Humanity. He is survived by his wife, Martha C. Taylor; one son, Robert L. Taylor, III, of Warrenton, Va.; two daughters, Ann Taylor Thomas, of Hardyville, Va. and Carol Taylor Smith, of Timmonsville, S.C.; two sisters, Mary E. Crocker, of Annapolis, Md. and Jean T. Strobel, of Springfield, Va.; one brother, Clarke B. Taylor, of College Park, Md.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
