Judith Marie Abernathy Jones, My dearest and beloved mother and friend departed this earth on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, to be with her mother and father and other loved ones in Heaven., Her battle with cancer was 10 months long, but her fight was valiant. Many friends, neighbors and loved ones, too many to mention, assisted in her home health care including, Shirley Sadler, Susie Hoffman, Clay and Vicki Marsh, Gail Ford, Tina Leiter, Tracy McDonald, Susan Tharp, Pat Marks, and Joanne Conley., The following is my mother's self written obituary:, I leave this world unwillingly because two very important parts of me will be left behind, my heart and soul, my children. That's the hardest part of dying., I am survived by my daughter, Kimberly Olsen; my son, Keith Jones and his wife, Andrea, and their four beautiful children, Kaylee, Karmen, Andrew and Kimberly; my brother, Edward "Abby" Abernathy, and his wife, Mary Lindsay; and my two four-legged companions, Missy and Celia., I was preceded in death by my parents, Florence and Edward Abernathy, and my uncle and aunt, Macon "Sug" and Myrtle Payne, all of whom I took care of throughout their years of declining health., My employment was rudely interrupted in January 2009 when I was told I had cancer. Dreams I had all but vanished. However, I was determined to beat it and went through months of chemo and radiation and actually received a cancer-free report. But the good news was short lived as the cancer moved elsewhere a few months later. In the end, it did get me., Thank you, Gordon Morris, for your care, compassion, graciousness, words of encouragement and for making me feel as if I were your only patient. And to Mary Wood, Hollis Campell, Vanessa John, Tawanda Anderson and Jill Hall, the care and attention you gave me was so comforting. It made coming to the hospital and that "room" all the more bearable. I will miss you all., I am being cremated so there will be no family night, but a service will be held in the chapel of Hill and Wood Funeral Home, 1 p.m. Monday, October 26, 2009, with Pastor Clay Marsh officiating. Burial will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens., In lieu of flowers, I ask for donations to be made to a local SPCA. |

Mrs. Brooks became a Seaford teacher while her own two children were students there. As part of a tradition that began at Seaford in the early 1980s and continues to this day, her classroom was assigned an alliterative nickname, Brooks' Braves, in orange block letters above her door., During the 1985-86 school year, Mrs. Brooks directed a production of "Mary Poppins." Behind stage, she used the reel of a fishing pole to lift a cardboard replica of Poppins (and her umbrella) off into the canvas sky., While SCA's advisor, Mrs. Brooks guided the student officers' initiatives to run weekly council meetings, plan dances and skating parties, and attend an SCA camp in the summer and state convention in the spring., Mrs. Brooks loved her students. She was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease around the same time she began teaching at Seaford, but kept her battle with its debilitating effects a secret until 1997. Although many told her that they already knew, she responded that she had been silent because she did not want to be held to a lower standard or treated as disabled. She continued teaching until Parkinson's made it impossible for her to do so, and retired in Fall 2000. A year and a half later, one of Mrs. Brooks' first students from 1985-86 filled her classroom slot; she teaches the third grade at Seaford to this day., In retirement, Mrs. Brooks delighted in a monthly lunch gathering with other retired teachers, in reading novels, playing bridge, and in watching the birds and squirrels in her backyard., Mrs. Brooks was a native of Charlotte and earned her teaching degree from Greensboro College, N.C., in 1967. Prior to coming to Seaford Elementary, she taught in various elementary schools in Virginia and North Carolina. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Brooks; her two children, Jennifer Brooks of Seaford, and David Brooks of Arlington; a brother, Bruce Harris of Florence, S.C.; and her father, Carl Harris of Charlotte, N.C., Mrs. Brooks was preceded in death by her mother, Sarah R. Harris., The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Crooks Memorial United Methodist Church. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks. |

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 41 years, Eleanor Mosburg Newby; his two sons, the joys of his life, and daughters-in-law, Randall (Randy) Lee Newby and Hilary, of Wytheville, Va., and Russell (Rusty) Newby and Bridget, of Narrows, Va.; his cherished grandchildren, Sydney Fields and Laney Newby, of Narrows, and Ryan Newby, of Wytheville; sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Jimmy Babb of Pulaski; his brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Cora Jean Newby, of Christiansburg; a special niece, Angie Davis, of Pearisburg, who was like a daughter; his three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Edna and William Martin, Hazel and Minor Bowles, of Pearisburg, and Joyce and Frank Longrie, of Pembroke. If anyone had a CB, lawn mower, gun, rifle, or pistol to sell, Roy was probably in the deal somewhere. He was also a huge fan of Jeff Gordon and enjoyed NASCAR racing. He loved his family and his beloved grandchildren more than anything and spent all the time he could with them and spoiled them rotten. Actually he loved all children and children loved him, he loved life, and was a true friend to all who knew him., He proudly served his country for nine years, including a tour in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968, and achieved the rank of Sergeant in the United States Army. Roy was an active member of the local VFW Post #6000 in Narrows, Va. He loved country music and before his illness he was also known to flat foot on occasion. Immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor, after turning 19, he qualified as an Aviation Cadet in the Army Air Corps. He completed his flying training in Camden, S.C., Bainbridge, Ga., Columbus, Miss., and was assigned to a training command airbase in Stuttgart, Ariz. Initially, he towed gliders, but soon the mission changed to pilot training and he instructed advanced cadets until June 1944. As he used to say, he was then able to escape the "Training Command" and go to B-24 and B-29 training, and a chance to get into the war., He arrived in Guam in time to fly in the great March 9-10 bombing raid on Tokyo. Completing 36 missions against Japan, he returned to the U.S. and left military active duty. As a "citizen soldier" he continued to fly as a reserve pilot, and enrolled to complete his college education at the University of Maryland. While there, he met and married his wife of 61 years, Gene Scaggs Bigelow, who preceded him in death in 2007., Bigelow was recalled to active duty for the Korean War. Flying several thousand hours with the Military Air Transport Service, the duty took him on numerous crossings of the Pacific in support of Korea and the atomic/hydrogen bomb tests at Eniwetok and Bikini., As that war ended, he was offered a Regular Commission in the U.S. Air Force and returned to Davis and Elkins, W.Va., as an AFROTC instructor. Though from a family of citizen soldiers, he and Gene felt that after two wars, he was in fact, career military., Though he flew only enough to maintain proficiency while with AFROTC, he next went to full-time flying at Bolling Field, Washington, D.C., in support of Headquarters, U.S. Air Force. Using five or six types of small and large aircraft, missions were to all parts of the U.S., and much of the world, to include an around the world trip with the Secretary of Agriculture in President Roosevelt's aircraft, the Sacred Cow. Completing a seven-year stint in Washington as Assistant executive Officer and front office pilot for the Air Force Comptroller, Major Bigelow joined the 463rd Tactical Airlift Wing of C-130 airplanes at Langley Field, Hampton. It was while en route to a four-month "rotation" at Evreux-Fauville, France, that he was intercepted at Lajes in the Azores to return and redeploy for the first of two Post "tours" in support of Vietnam., After flying airlift missions to 36 different fields in every "nook and cranny" of that tortured place, he left the 463rd wing for what was to be his final tour of duty as Senior Operations Officer on an Action Team in the Pentagon Air Force Command. Awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 10 Oak Leaf Clusters., Leaving the Air Force for retirement on the Virginia Peninsula, Bigelow met and was hired by Mrs. Norvelate Downing, instantly sharing her concern for the poor housing conditions in downtown Newport News. He started an unlikely career for a military officer as Housing Coordinator, Deputy Director and Director of the Office of Human Affairs. Despite the complete change of direction in life's work, Bob was completely dedicated to the multi-programmed Office of Human Affairs and his fellow man., After retiring from OHA, he continued his lifelong interest in flying with the Old Dominion Squadron, Commemorative Air Force, and in history as a member of the York County Historical Committee., He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Rollins and her husband, Dennis; granddaughters, Elizabeth and her husband, David Allen, Stephanie and her husband, Brian Jump, and Samantha; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Caitlin Allen, all of Yorktown. He is also survived by nephews, Chester and Laura Bigelow of Frederick, Md., John and Cathy Bigelow of Frederick, Md.; and a plethora of nieces and nephews., The family extends it's gratitude and praise to the devoted nurses and staff of the Gardens of Warwick Forest, a team of caring people from Riverside Hospice, and all the family and friends of Bob, who made his journey to Heaven complete., A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, in the chapel of Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment with full military honors will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Arlington National Cemetery. |

He was a Life Member of the U.S. Naval Institute and the Naval Academy Alumni Association. He also enjoyed the Mariners Museum and the James River Country Club and volunteering at the local airport.
