Aust Jr., Charles Allen

Charles Allen Aust Jr., known as "Frosty" to his friends, passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2009, at Carrington Place in Wytheville, Va. On November 19, 1943, Charles was born in Pulaski County to Charles Allen Aust Sr. and Trula Mary Craig Aust, both now deceased. He attended Pulaski High School, Class of '62, where he was given the nickname, "Frosty." A car accident at the age of 21 resulted in a long and painful recovery, after which he joined his father at Aust Glass Works, the family business opened in 1935., Charles became the heart of Aust Glass Works when his father passed away in 1966. For years he installed windshields, shaped mirrors, and cut glass for everything from art projects to picture frames. He worked until 1998, when a brutal attack and robbery ended his career. After a second painful rehabilitation, he became a resident of Carrington Place for the rest of his life., Charles was baptized in 1957, as a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Later he became a member of First United Methodist Church in Pulaski, where he attended regularly and often served as usher. A natural storyteller, he was always eager to talk to customers and visitors, and he was a loyal supporter of the school activities of his many nieces and nephews. He was proud of his family, his Pulaski heritage, and his role as a businessman in his hometown., He is survived by his sisters, Mildred "Duckie" Aust Keller, Ruth Aust Harrell, and Jo Ann Aust Asbury with her husband Roger Allen Asbury Sr., all of Pulaski. Also surviving are his loving nieces and nephews, Donna Marie Jackson, of Greensboro, N.C., Charlie Byrd Duncan III and his wife, Vann Duncan, of Newbern, David Allen Duncan, of Floyd, April Asbury, of Pulaski, and Roger Allen Asbury II and his wife, Laura McManus Asbury, of Roanoke. He is also survived by a number of cousins, greatnieces, and great-nephews., He was preceded in death by his mother, Trula Mary Craig Aust; his father, Charles Allen Aust Sr.; and a sister, Lucy Jane Aust Duncan., hour of 2:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. The Reverend Hugh Kilgore will officiate. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Arrangements are by Stevens Funeral Home. Baldwin, Dennis Calvin

BALDWIN, Dennis Calvin, 73, of Sandston, passed away Monday, October 4, 2009, after an eight-month battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his father, Jefferson J. Baldwin; mother, Carrie Yarbrough Baldwin; sister, Norma Baldwin Cummings; two brothers, Raymond T. Baldwin and Jefferson L. Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin was a graduate of Varina High School and served in the United States Air Force at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He retired from Union Envelope Company after 37 years of service in 1992. He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Shirley Childress Baldwin; one stepson, Eric Roger Childress; three daughters from a previous marriage, Terry K. Baldwin, Michelle L. Baldwin and Crystal A. Baldwin Walton; three grandchildren, Bryan Jennings Conner, Tiffany M. Baldwin and Megan Ann Baldwin. BARTOSZEK, Francis F., 76, of Hudsonville, Mich., passed away peacefully on Monday, October 5, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers and sisters, Mary, Mildred, Jack, Joe and Florian. Bolt, Louise Hutcherson Hale

Louise Hutcherson Hale Bolt, 99, of Roanoke, Va., died on Thursday, October 1, 2009, after having a stroke and heart attack on September 17, 2009. She was born on February 18, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, Va., a daughter of the late Cabel and Tenie Hutcherson. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Carlton R. Hale and Wilmit T. Bolt; and two sisters, Mabel H. Comer and Elizabeth H. Board. Louise is survived by her son, David Hale and his partner, Jim Mori, of San Francisco, Calif.; her two daughters, Patricia and her husband, Richard Conway Eubank Jr., of Roanoke, and Nancy and her husband, Michael D. Rutledge, of Salem; four grandchildren, Tracy Eubank, of Botetourt, Rick Eubank and his wife, Jenny, of Roanoke, Travis Rutledge and his wife, Deborah, of Bedford County, and Heather Rutledge, of Salem; eight great-grandchildren, Matthew and Sam Booth, Hannah, Rich, and Shane Eubank, and Dane, Cole, and Riley Rutledge; her brothers, Oscar Hutcherson and his wife, Evelyn, and Reginald Hutcherson and his wife, Mary Alice; her sisters, Clara H. Hall, Doris H. Shelton and her husband, David, Alma H. Amrhein, and Olivia H. Smith, all of Roanoke; and many nieces and nephews., Louise was a master of multi-tasking, allowing her to achieve many goals in her life. She was a founding member of the Wildwood Garden Club and served as its chairman in the late 1950's when the club took the responsibility for landscape planting at the then new Thrasher Park on Gus Nicks Boulevard. She was employed for many years by the American Visco Corporation, in the aftermath of the Great Depression. In the 1950's she became a distributor for the Wear-Ever Aluminum Company and became one of the nation's top salespersons during the 1960's. In the 1970's she became active in real estate, acquiring numerous residential rental properties throughout Roanoke., s will be held 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2009, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Branan Thompson officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m., , enabling her to remain in her home until the very end. BRANN, Charles William "Bill", 92, of Sandy Point, passed away Sunday, October 4, 2009. He was a retired Postmaster for U.S. Postal Service, a World War II Army veteran, a member of Yeocomico Episcopal Church and a member of the American Legion. Mr. Brann was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Presley Brann and Annie Morris Brann; two brothers, James Earl Brann and Allen Tayloe Brann; and his companion and fianc‚e of 25 years, Polly Southworth. Cole Jr., John

Dr. John (Jack) Cole Jr., 77, of Roanoke Va., died on Friday, October 2, 2009. He was born in Norfolk, Va., on August 31, 1932. Jack graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk. He received his BA from Virginia Military Institute in 1954, where he was an avid pole-vaulter, and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Virginia in 1958. His Internship was completed at Norfolk General Hospital in 1959 followed by a Residency at the University of Virginia in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery completed in 1962., He was married to the love of his life, Jobil Lassiter Cole, on June 16, 1956., After serving in the United States Army in Heidelberg, West Germany as Chief of Otolaryngology, Jack began a private practice in Roanoke, Va., in 1965 at the Roanoke Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic from which he retired in 1998. After his retirement, he worked at the VA Hospital Otolaryngology Clinic until September 2009. He was appointed Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology, University of Virginia. His professional activities included serving the Roanoke Academy of Medicine as President, Medical Society of Virginia, Virginia Society Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, American College of Surgeons, and Examiner American Board of Otolaryngology. He served on many Boards of Directors, some local and some regional, including the Roanoke Academy of Medicine, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Rotary Club of Roanoke, American Cancer Society, American College of Surgeons, Virginia Society of Otolaryngology, Virginia Healthcare Foundation, and many others. He was also a member of the Rotary Club of Roanoke, the English Speaking Union, SAR, the Round Table, and the Shenandoah Club., Jack enjoyed traveling, playing golf, was an avid outdoorsman, a long-winded joke-teller, a voracious reader, cared deeply for his patients, was an amazing and gifted physician and surgeon, as well as a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend., He was preceded in death by his parents, John Cole and Elizabeth Dent Cole; and his sister, Cecilia (Teada) Cole Stephens. Costin Jr., Thomas Rodney

COSTIN, Thomas Rodney Jr., 66, passed away on October 3, 2009 following a lengthy illness. He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Rodney Costin Sr. and Ethel Wood Costin. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara Palmore Costin; a son and daughter, Thomas "Roddy" Costin III and Ginger Costin Koubi; four granddaughters; two great-grandsons; his cousin and aunt, Bob Wood and Geraldine M. Wood of Port Orange, Florida; and numerous other cousins. He graduated from Varina High School in 1961 and went on to earn a degree in Geophysical Science from Virginia Tech in 1967. His career in the oil and gas industry spanned decades and his dedication to his work was respected by all who knew him. His family acknowledges the deep friendships made during his career and knows that these friends mourn him as brothers or sisters. Cronk, C. Tabor

CRONK, C. Tabor, died Saturday, October 3, 2009, in Urbanna, Va. He was born in Richmond, Va., on March 5, 1940 and was preceded in death by his parents, Earle Tabor Walker Cronk and Mary Eller Cronk; his sister, Shirley Cronk Thompson; and his brother, E. David Cronk. He was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, VMI, and Washington & Lee School of Law. He proudly served in the Virginia National Guard. He began his law career in Radford, Va., with the law firm of Goldsmith & Jenkins. He returned to Richmond to join the staff of the Attorney General of Virginia serving primarily in the education section. In September 2000, he was presented by the Superintendent of VMI the VMI Achievement Medal for his "sage and thoughtful advice to the Board of Visitors and three Superintendents." He retired in August 2008 as General Counsel of Old Dominion University. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Crenshaw Cronk; his daughters, Dorothy Edwards Cronk, Jennifer Clay Cronk, Catherine Cronk Marino, her husband, J. Michael Marino III, and their daughter, Kylie Madison Marino; and last but never least, his son, Benjamin Tabor Cronk. He is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Cronk Lloyd. Walter Hall Dickey Sr., 88, of Roanoke, Va., died on Sunday, October 4, 2009. Dickey, as he was known to his family and friends, practiced dentistry in Roanoke for over 50 years. He served on the Virginia Board of Dental Examiners for 10 years and was active in the Roanoke Dental Society, the Virginia Dental Society, the American Dental Society, and the American College of Dentists., s. Dickey also loved a good golf game, time with his friends and family, and Virginia Tech. His family, friends, and patients remember him for his compassion, his wonderful sense of humor, his dedication to his family, church, and vocation, and his ability to always brighten up a room with his presence., Dickey was predeceased by his parents, Walter Highley Dickey and Fannie James Dickey; and his sister, Betty Dickey Stuart. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 65 years, Phyllis Shawn Dickey. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years of marriage, Raymond Carlyle Edwards; children, Stuart Edwards (Sharon), Michael Edwards (Karen) and Cindy Miles (Tom); granddaughter, Jennifer Connell; grandsons, Jason Edwards and Joe Edwards; great-grandchildren, Seth Connell and Dylan Connell. Dolores was a wonderful wife and mother, she was a lifetime member of Calvary United Methodist Church; she loved sewing, crafts and was very creative. Oct 6, 2009 The funeral for Fannie Jones Moorman, 83, of Queens, N.Y., and formerly of Martinsville, who died Oct. 2, 2009, at Elmhurst Hospital in New York, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hairston Funeral Home in Martinsville. Bishop J.C. Richardson will officiate. Burial will be at Carver Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time for the service Wednesday. She was born in Martinsville on Nov. 20, 1925, to Cooper Jones and Ella Jones Flippin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Moorman. GIOVANNETTI, Thomas L., of Richmond, died Sunday, October 4, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Annie Giovannetti; and his siblings, Charles Giovannetti, Mary Puzenski, Marguerite Giovannetti, Annie Simmons and Eva Dolak. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ann Schaefer Giovannetti; his son, Tony Giovannetti (Mary); his daughters, Theresa G. Strickland (Tommy), Katie G. Lawton (Brian), Christy G. Owen (Evan); 12 grandchildren; and his sister, Irma Pulley. Tommy was a graduate of St. Patrick's High School, served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, was a retired employee of the federal government with 36 years of service and a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 395. He enjoyed a long retirement with his children and grandchildren and volunteered many hours with the children at Our Lady of Lourdes School. His remains rest at Bliley's-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family will receive friends Tuesday (today) from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Wake and Rosary Service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. HIRSCHLER, Elizabeth W., 93, widow of Edward S. Hirschler, passed away on October 4, 2009. A native of Richmond, she was the daughter of the late Rhonie and Lee Whitlock and was a graduate of Smith College. She is survived by her two daughters, Beth Long and Anne Long; and her son-in-law, David Long, all of Richmond. In addition are her four granddaughters, Tracy Long, Kay Long-Martin, Cindy Long and Diane Cafritz; and seven great-grandchildren. She was active in a wide variety of civic, cultural and charitable endeavors over many years of service to her community. She was not only a devoted wife and mother, but a constant support to her husband, to her children and her friends. Her passing will leave a void that will be very hard to fill. The family particularly wants to thank her devoted caregivers, Tammy Williams, Mary Jackson, Kim Brown, Gayle Mixon and Ella Bland. He is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Linda Berkley Jackson "Diane"; two daughters, Virginia Dawn Warren and her husband, Shawn Eric, and Jennifer Hazelwood Nash and her husband, Kevin James; five grandchildren, Chelsea Victoria Warren, Kayla Marie Warren, Madison Elizabeth Warren, Brittany Taylor Nash and Ethan James Nash, all of Chesterfield, Va.; one sister, Linda Jackson Sebra and her husband, Michael, of Chester, Va.; and one brother, David Wayne Jackson and his wife, Faye, of Charles City, Va. Danny was retired from Philip Morris, Blended Leaf Plant, after 37 years of faithful service. He was also an active member in the Mid-County Volunteer Rescue Squad. Danny was a loving husband, father, and was a friend to all who knew him and enjoyed being in their company. He was also an avid fisherman and found great peace being on the water. KING, Helen Louise Taylor, 87, lifelong resident of Petersburg, Va., passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at Southside Regional Medical Center. She had been a current resident of Colonial Heights Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Colonial Heights, Va. Helen was born on January 24, 1922, in Victoria, Va., and as a young child moved with her parents and siblings to Petersburg, Va. She graduated from Petersburg High School in 1940 and was a previous Federal employee of the Defense General Supply Center, Richmond, Va. Her church membership was at Elm Street Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va., and in her later years, Pine Grove Baptist Church of Dinwiddie County, Va. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, John Percivall Taylor and Amy Gertrude Douglas Taylor; her loving husband, Herbert Cleveland King, Jr.; and her sisters, Doris Dickens, Ruth Gunter, Bertha Black and Maxine Morris. Surviving members of Helen's family are her two sons, Herbert Cleveland King III (Sonny), and his wife, Diane, John Wayne King; and her two daughters, Linda K. Cothron and Sharon K. Nolan. She also leaves many wonderful memories to her seven grandchildren (Kimberly Elksnis, Tracy Lather, Theresa King, April Price, Ralph (BJ) Cothron, Dylan Nolan and Caitlin Nolan). She was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she was devoted to her family and the Lord. She will be greatly missed. Griffin III, of Baton Rouge, La.; six grandchildren, William O. Griffin IV and Melanie Griffin Derry, both of Baton Rouge, La., Anna S. Lingley of Virginia Beach, Matthew S. Sampson of Roanoke, Jennifer M. Gerlach and Laura C. Gerlach, both of Richmond; and three great-grandsons. Mrs. Kinlaw was a former member of Brookland United Methodist Church (formerly Staples Mill Methodist Church), where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir. In recent years, she was a member of Staples Mill Road Baptist Church. Gordon is survived by his wife of 22 years, Carolyn Hammond Morrison; his parents, Ivan and Elizabeth Morrison; three sisters, Lesley, Christine and Beverly; three brothers-in-law, Vince, Jonathan and Feridon; two nephews, Kyle and Ian; one niece, Kara; one sister-in-law, Joan; along with a large extended family in Canada and the UK. Gordon worked for Crown BMW for 16 years, developing many friendships during that time. Gordon loved his job and the people he worked with. Gordon also developed many close relationships inside the worldwide brotherhood of Jehovah's Witnesses. Mrs. McConnell was an active, longtime member of Walmsley Boulevard United Methodist Church, where she served on various committees. She was a graduate of Goochland High School and a lifetime member of Woodman of the World. McCULLOUGH, James Joseph "Jay", passed away October 3, 2009 after a brave struggle with cancer. Jay was born February 19, 1948 in Wierton, W.Va. He is survived by his partner, Don Warren Jr.; sons, Christian James McCullough and Joseph William McCullough, and their mother, Suzanne Ferguson; brothers, Robert C. McCullough and his wife, Sandy, and Michael McCullough and his wife, Nancy; a sister, Stephanie Gurrera and her husband, George; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nephews and friends. Predeceasing Jay were his parents, Robert C. and Lois McCullough; and a son, Douglas Scott. He graduated from Boston Conservatory of Music with BFA in musical comedy. He was a passionate supporter of the arts as a director, choreographer, actor, singer and dancer. He worked with the Barksdale Theater at Hanover Tavern, Swift Creek Mill Playhouse, Encore Theater Company, Richmond Triangle Players (Board of Directors), Chamberlayne Actors Theater, Henrico Theater Company, Theater Company at Fort Lee, John Rolfe Players, Brandermill Community Theater, The Festival of the Arts at Dogwood Dell, Nottingham Arts Theater (Nottingham, England), and he sang with the Richmond Men's Chorus. He spent many years in telecommuni-cations with Central Fidelity Bank and Capital One (U.S. and U.K.). Theater was his passion - the job in telecommunications paid the bills. Betty attended the College of William & Mary, where she graduated with a BA in English. She retired from teaching in Henrico Public Schools in 1977. She was also a member of the Thomas Rolfe Chapter Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. Pat was a former member of the Waverly Woman's Club. She worked as a bookkeeper for Spencer Brothers in Waverly for 17 years and also worked as a bookkeeper at Glenn's Automotive and at Claremont Manor. She is survived by her son, James F. West Jr. of Waverly; a grandson, R. Brian Denny and wife, Kimberly, of Hopewell; a sister, Linda G. Smith and husband, Richard, of Pasadena, Md.; a brother, Kenneth Gast and wife, Karen, of Pasadena, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. Laburnum Ave., where viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 7, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and where family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Funeral service 2 p.m. Thursday, October 8, 2009 in the March Funeral Home Chapel. Wright, Wilbur

Wilbur (Bud) Wright, 85, of Roanoke, Va., died peacefully on Sunday, October 4, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Vergie; his son, Warren Douglas Wright, of Roanoke, Va., and his wife Maura; and his daughter, Karen Lee Humphlett and her husband, Charles, of Las Vegas, Nev. He is also survived by grandchildren, Samuel and Tina Wright, of Holbrook, N.Y., and their daughters, Lauren and Melanie; Donna and Peter Mortensen, of Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y., and their daughters, Amanda, Nicole and Shannon; Matthew Wright of Yakima, Wash., and Kimberly Freeman, of Fairfax, Va. He was a noble and humble man who loved his wife, his family and his country. He was stationed on the USS Pennsylvania during the Pearl Harbor invasion and went on to serve with honor for the rest of World War II. He spent his life outdoors and the splendor of nature's bounty was the source of his spirituality. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations be made to Carilion Clinic Hospice, 1615 Franklin Road, Roanoke, Va. 24016.
