Donald Wade Capps of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 4, 2009, after an extended illness. He was surrounded by family and friends during his last days. Donald was born on March 21, 1949, in South Boston, Va., a son of the late William Oliver Capps Sr. and Esther Turner Reaves Capps. He was also preceded in death by his twin brother, Ronald Wayne Capps; and older brother, William Oliver Capps Jr., He is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years, Brenda Smith Capps; sons, Christopher Todd Capps, of Roanoke, and Jeffrey Chad (Fawn) Capps, of Richmond; grandchildren, Andrew Capps, and Conner and Moira Capps; nieces, Nancy Lee, Melissa Davis, Joanna Capps, and Mary Leigh Capps; and half sister, Dianna LeCroy, of Fayetteville, N.C. He was known as "GrandDonny" to his namesake, Donald Ryan, W.J. and the late Katie Mae. Other relatives include sisters-in-law, Sharon Capps, and Linda Altman (Glenn); brothers-in-law, Otis Smith (Joyce) and Donald Smith (Peggy); many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews., Donald proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. He was an avid motorcyclist. One of his proudest activities was riding with Rolling Thunder to the Vietnam Memorial on Memorial Days. He also enjoyed riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway, as well as riding in poker runs for various charities in both Roanoke and Brunswick, Ga. Donald loved music, and sang and played guitar throughout his whole life. He loved to sing and play with his friends and family. His love of motorcycles and music has been passed on to the generations that have loved him here, and look forward to a glorious reunion with him in Heaven., Donald was a graduate of William Fleming High School, and also attended Virginia Western Community College where he majored in business administration. He worked in the telecommunications industry for 30 years. Donald and his wife operated Cherokee Cable in Roanoke and then moved to Brunswick, Ga., where Brenda's family lives. They became an integral part of his life, and also mourn his passing., The family would like to thank Carilion Hospice, especially Alan and Julie, and Friendship Hospice for their special care during this time. Pauline Gregory (Polly) Holloway, 74, of Vinton, Va., passed away suddenly on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, of natural causes. She is predeceased by her husband, Jim, who she loved and cherished for 43 years; and also by her parents, Otho and Gertrude Gregory. Surviving to enjoy her memory are her son, Jim Jr. and wife, Tammy, of Woodbridge, Va.; daughters, Sharon Hamre and husband, Scott, of Atlanta, Ga., Brenda Garrison, of Vinton, Va., and Marilyn Hoggatt and husband, Greg, of Pensacola Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Erin and Nick Tudor, of Vinton, Va.; sister, Louise Davidson, of Rogersville, Tenn.; and brother, Bill Gregory and wife, Ruth, of Kingsport, Tenn., to others. She had a deep compassion for people and always took an active interest when someone was ill or had a personal tragedy. She was always there. She sincerely cared about her family, her friends, her employees and their families. More than anything she was a loving and thoughtful wife, wonderful mother, grandmother, friend, and sister. She loved and cherished her family with all her heart., Polly attended a one room school house in Tazewell, Va., graduated from High School, went to Virginia Polytechnic Institute where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in home economics, and received a master's degree in nutrition., s supervisor for the Roanoke County School system and remained in her position for 34 years until her retirement in 2000. During her career she started a breakfast program for low income children, developed the first centralized school menu and was affectionately known as "the lunch lady.", She served on the Roanoke County Schools Federal Credit Union Board of Directors and Finance Committee for 32 years and was a member of the National School Food Services Association and the American School Food Services Association throughout her career. She volunteered countless hours with the and most recently organized all the food donations for the Alzheimer's Memory Walk. She was very active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, William F. Graves Chapter and the United Daughters of the Confederacy where she served as President for both. Polly was an active member of the Retired Teachers Association where she served most recently as District P Chairman. She was active in the Eastern Star of Vinton recently serving as Secretary, Bird Club, Lions Club and Peacock-Harper Culinary Friends at VPI. She was inducted into the old guard of Virginia Tech during her 50th class reunion. For 53 years Polly thoroughly enjoyed attending yearly gatherings of her VPI classmates at her dear friend's farm in Mt. Rush, Va., Polly loved her church family, Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church, the Claudine Pedigo Sunday School Class, and Circle One. She also frequently volunteered her time to serve the homeless at a local shelter. She enjoyed the fellowship of the United Methodist Women's Group and the Roanoke Women's Connection., Polly was as active a person as any one person can be-traveling the globe to see new places, experiencing new things, never went anywhere she didn't love, and always came home with new friends. Her travels took her to Europe many times, Africa, China, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and countless trips across the beautiful United States. She loved her many cruises with her family and friends. Oct 9, 2009 Joseph "Joe" William Minter, 87, of 62 Sunrise Ave., Martinsville, who was the first chief magistrate for the Martinsville and Henry and Patrick counties, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. Minter was appointed Justice of the Peace on Jan. 1, 1956, and served in that capacity until July 1, 1974, when the state switched to the magistrate system at which time he was named the first chief magistrate. He held that position until retiring on July 1, 1996. He was born May 19, 1922, in Martinsville to Joseph Jackson Minter and Ruby Elizabeth Prillaman Minter. Minter was a World War II veteran, having served in the Pacific Theatre with the 9th Troop Carrier Squadron, Army Air Corp from October 1942 to November 1945. He had worked at McKee Funeral Home, starting in 1941, and continued his long career in the funeral business as a licensed funeral director at Norris Funeral Services and Crematory. He was a member of the First Baptist Church on Starling Avenue, Martinsville. He was a member of the Virginia Magistrate Association, charter member of the Martinsville-Henry County Life Saving Crew from which he retired after 20 years as a life member, and he was a past member of the Collinsville Lions Club. On May 23, 1991, he was named an honorary "Texan" by the Texas State Senate. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Betty Harris Minter of the home; two daughters, Betty Carol Swinney of Martinsville and Ann M. Marks of Houston, Texas; two sons, Jim Minter of Danville and Michael D. Minter of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Page Minter of Yorktown, to whom the Minters became surrogate parents after the death of his parents. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Norris Funeral Services with the Rev. John Fulcher officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. Alfred W. Magee Jr. WILMINGTON - Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Alfred "Wes" Magee Jr., 92, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center. Wes was born Dec. 14, 1916, in Weehawken, N.J., son of the late Alfred Wesley Magee and Lucy Worth Magee. His wife, Charlotte Norris Magee and son-in-law, Jerry Ramsey, preceded him in death. He attended the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton School) and Rutgers University before serving in the U.S. Navy as a fighter pilot in both World War II in the Pacific Theatre and the Korean War. Wes was a highly decorated aviator, including the Air Medal, Navy Unit Commendations, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. He also served aboard the USS Cowpens and the USS Bonhomme Richard. Upon retirement from the Navy, Wes piloted for Timme Corp during the 1960s. In addition to being a member of the vestry of Church of the Good Shepherd, Wes was a member of several retired military and pilot organizations, including Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), Navy League, World War II Remembered, and the Elks. He is survived by four daughters, Patricia Vaughan (David) of Alexandria, Va., Judith Stant (Peter) of Redding, Conn., Leslie Chinappi of Norfolk, and Nancy Martin (John) of Weems, Va.; son, A.W. "Pete" Magee III of Alamosa, Colo.; stepdaughter, Susan Ramsey of Wilmington, N.C.; 11 grandchildren including Thomas Dickens Fulcher Jr. (Christy) of Virginia Beach; and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his former wife, Jeanne Magee Tucker of Atlantic Shores, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 9, in Andrews Market Street Chapel. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Church of the Good Shepherd with the Rev. G. Edward Dunlap and the Rev. Margaret Hutchins officiating. Carl Marshall Nordwall WINDSOR - Capt. Carl Marshall Nordwall, 56, passed away peacefully Oct. 6, 2009. He was born May 5, 1953 to the late David and Marguerite Nordwall in Chevy, Md. Serving his community and keeping people safe was a passion for Capt. Nordwall. He was a distinguished firefighter with the Norfolk Airport Fire Department for more than 27 years, a life member of the Oceana Fire Department, Station 8, and a member of the International Association of Firefighters. He was also a devoted member and Squadron Commander of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 49, Smithfield, and a charter member of the American Legion Riders Chapter 49, Smithfield. Capt. Nordwall will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. He will be deeply missed. Oct 9, 2009 A memorial service for Richard "Dick" Dulin Fitts, 73, of Martinsville, a retired finance director of Martinsville, who died Oct. 5, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Norris Funeral Services with Chaplain Paul Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for a half-hour before the service Saturday. He retired as finance director in 1997. Fitts was born Nov. 12, 1935, in Danville to Louise Smoot Fitts of Danville and Robert S. Fitts III. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert S. Fitts IV. He graduated from Schoolfield High School in Danville and served in the Air Force for 22 years until retiring in January 1977. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force Association and the U.S. Veterans Association. He received a bachelor of science degree from William Carey College at Hattiesburg, Miss, in December 1974 and his master of public administration in December 1977 from Angelo State University. After receiving his graduate degree, he worked as assistant city manager of the city of Sonara, Texas. Fitts then returned to Angelo State University as the director of data processing and moved to Martinsville in 1982. He was a past president of the Martinsville Rotary Club and was one of the founders of its morning club. He also was a past president of Forest Park Country Club. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 51 years, Christel Fitts of the home; a daughter, Jennifer Fain of Stuart; a sister, Nancye F. Parker of Danville; and three grandchildren. . Roy loved to travel and was an accomplished gardener, especially summer tomatoes and winter collards. Roy was notorious for teasing those he loved.
