Gloria S. Armstrong CHESAPEAKE - Gloria Sutton Armstrong, 77, passed away Oct. 14, 2009, in her home. She was born Dec. 31, 1931, in Manns Harbor, N.C., to the late Rosa Lee and Thomas Odell Sutton. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry N. Armstrong; sister, Helon R. Armstrong, and brother, Willard R. Sutton. Left to cherish her memory are son, Thomas Armstrong and wife Kimberly of Currituck, N.C.; three daughters, Lynn Hemilright and husband Roger of Manns Harbor, Lois Alliss and husband Rick of Chesapeake and Sandra Wilkins and husband Rodney, also of Chesapeake; a sister, Rita Mann of Manns Harbor; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Gloria was a member of Kempsville Church of Christ. She loved and served the Lord with all her heart. She was a wonderful wife and mother, devoted wholly to her family. Cooking was a favorite pastime and she spent many joyful hours in the kitchen preparing delectable meals (in large quantities) that were generously shared with family and friends. Her home was always filled with mouth-watering aromas of something simmering on the stove or baking in the oven. Her crispy fried chicken, homemade biscuits, collard greens seasoned with salt pork, dumplings, and baked sweet potatoes satisfied many a palate craving good "country cookin'." Coconut, carrot, and vanilla pound cakes often beckoned from the counter. It was her heart's delight to have everyone come together to partake of good food and fellowship. Her expertise at preserving the abundant fruit and vegetables harvested from the bountiful garden so lovingly tended by Henry, resulted in a well-stocked pantry and freezer. Gloria will long be remembered for her faith, hospitality and generosity. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kempsville Church of Christ by the Rev. Randall and Josh Childress. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in Mount Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Manns Harbor, N.C. The family will receive friends at 2360 West Road. Austin Betts Frazier HARRISONBURG - Our son, Austin Betts Frazier, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, at his grand- parent's home. He succumbed to a quiet, insidious disease: bi-polar disorder. Austin suffered valiantly from the ravages of this physically transparent illness since early adolescence. Bi-polar is incurable and as deadly as cancer or heart disease. It is a disease of the mind, and one's mental outlook. Austin is survived by his parents; his brother, Cyril Sease Frazier; and his beloved little sister, Janie Rosemary Frazier; his grandfather, Dr. James R. Sease; many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins from both sides of our family. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Janie Tune Sease, and his paternal grandparents, Robert Y. and Linda Betts Frazier, all of Harrisonburg, Va. Austin graduated from Harrisonburg Baptist Preschool, Blue Ridge Christian School, Keezletown Elementary, Montevideo MS, St. Anne's-Belfield School, and Blue Ridge Community College. He was so proud to be a junior at James Madison University with a major in psychology. He believed in the Lord and the redeeming grace to be found in heaven. While his funeral will be private, the family asks that friends go to, and search for "Austin Frazier Memorial" and leave us a message. You may also go to, and leave a note for us on the guestbook. If you would like to help prevent such tragedy from occurring to other families, and to raise awareness of this disease and lower the social stigma that the afflicted and their families suffer, please send a donation to: Austin Frazier Memorial at The Community Foundation, P.O. Box 1068, Harrisonburg, VA 22803. We prefer this in lieu of flowers. Austin's loss leaves a hole in our life that cannot be filled. But we are comforted knowing he's with Grandma, Papa, "Mom," and Aunt Carla, now - and with a perfect body and healthy mind. Bibb and Dolly Frazier, Make a memorial contribution |

Richard Lynn (Dick) Kelley, 63, of Vinton, Va., completed his final triathlon on Wednesday, October 14, 2009. As he crossed the finish line his biggest fan "Sweets" cheered him on as he received the biggest, and grandest trophy of all time. He was preceded in death in July of this year by his father, Robert F. Kelley Sr. An Army veteran of the Vietnam War, Dick served for 11 years achieving the rank of Major before leaving the Army for a job with the Bedford School System and then later a job as Assistant Superintendant of Operations with the Roanoke City Public School System. In that position his job responsibility was to be the Superintendant's "right arm." He served in this capacity for 25 years before retiring in 2005. During his tenure he was responsible for the planning, renovation, and construction of 14 of the school buildings that the system now operates. Just last month he was recognized for his work at the dedication and ribbon cutting at the new William Fleming High School., Much has been written about his love of sports and his being an avid outdoorsman. These activities included participating in marathons, triathlons, skiing, running, biking, and hiking. In addition to these activities, he also worked to maintain a nature trail at Bobblett's Gap along the Appalachian Trial. His attention to detail was evidenced by his taking the time to identify the plants along the portion of the trail he maintained. He was also known to leave provisions at the Bobblett's Gap shelter for the comfort of those who would use the facility for rest as they hiked along the trail., During the colder months when he couldn't spend time outdoors, he would spend his time working with his longtime hobby of model railroading. Anyone who has seen this display can attest to his amazing talent and attention to detail., Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Carol Kelley; children, Jack Eppard and wife, Melanie, of Rhome, Texas, Teresa Phillips, and Brad Eppard and wife, Debbie, of Raleigh, N.C.; mother, Eleanor Kelley, of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Patricia "Tricia" Gangstad and husband, Erik, of Ft.
