Pauline Caldwell Bishop, 101, of Cloverdale, Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 12, 2009. She was born on April 12, 1908, in Mill Creek, Va., to Luther and Mary Dupree Caldwell. Pauline was a lifelong resident of Botetourt County and faithfully attended and served her Lord at the Troutville Baptist Church. Pauline enjoyed life and loved to bake especially pies and cakes, cooking, vegetable gardening, sewing, quilting but her real passion was just being a homemaker and her church. Oct 14, 2009 General Jackson "Billy" Barnes Jr., 73, of Bassett, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, at his home. He was born July 2, 1936, in Henry County to General Jackson "Bill" Barnes Sr. and Nannie Rosabelle Adkins Barnes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William Allen Barnes, and a grandson. He served in the Army and had attended Bassett Church of the Brethren. He retired from DuPont with 24 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Daisy Young Barnes of the home; two sons, Darrell Wayne Barnes and David Andrew Barnes; a stepdaughter, Patricia Handy; six grandchidren; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Bassett with the Rev. Steve Tilley and Dr. Charles Lumpkin officiating. Burial will be in Mt. As a very active civic leader in Bristol and Southwest Virginia, Bill was chairman of the Bristol Virginia Economic Development Committee and president of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Bristol Virginia-Tennessee Industrial Commission, the board of directors of the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce, the board of directors and chairman of the finance and audit committees of Bristol Memorial Hospital, the board of directors of the Virginia Bankers Association, the Bristol Country Club and the Rotary Club of Bristol., Mr. Ligon was a generous supporter of many charities by giving of his time and resources to the Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Plantation, Inc., the United Way of Bristol, Lee Street Baptist Church Daycare, the Bristol Boys and Girls Club and many others. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of The Virginian Golf Club and The Olde Farm, both of Bristol, Va., and Spanish Wells Golf Club of Hilton Head, S.C. After his retirement, he learned to fly an airplane and had many special excursions in his plane, N1835M. He especially loved the beautiful scenery over Holston Mountain. As an avid basketball fan, he regularly attended men's college basketball Final Four Championships. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Bristol, Va., and also attended All Saints Episcopal Church in Hilton Head, S.C., . Mr. Ligon is also survived by valued employees, Barbara E. Cox, Kelly Cassidy, Nell Leonard, Cindi Carmack, Brenda Malone, Peggy Eades, and Penny Gibson, all of whom are appreciated for their love, care, and attention above and beyond the call of duty. His former bank secretary, Mary N. Brewer, and fellow banker, Edwin H. Hale, also survive. Appreciation is extended to Dr. David Guldseth and staff and Dr. Rick Guthrie and staff for their loving care. In addition to his parents, Mr. Ligon was preceded in death by his two sons, Roger Lee Ligon and H. Vaughan Ligon; and his brother, Vaughan Ligon., . Shakie Lillian Vajaibian Macher, 79, of Roanoke, Va., died on Saturday, October 10, 2009, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Macher was born on December 29, 1929, in Jamaica, N.Y., and was the daughter of Dikron and Anna Jorjorian Vajaibian. She attended public schools in New York City, and worked briefly as a telephone operator for Bell Atlantic Telephone Company in New York., On February 1, 1951, she married Roland Werner Macher who preceded her in death on September 6, 1985. The family settled in Wayne, N.J., for many years before relocating to Harrisonburg, Va., in 1970. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Dodakian, of Belmont, Mass., and Elizabeth Bolstein, of Chichester, N.Y., Mrs. Macher was instrumental in starting the family's restaurant business in Harrisonburg, and for over 30 years, she welcomed and cared for customer's at Spanky's Restaurant. Shakie had a special place in her heart for all children and considered her grandchildren the love of her life. She was a member of Muhlenberg Lutheran Church and the VFW auxiliary. Mrs. Macher relocated to Roanoke, Va., in 2006 to be closer to family., Mrs. Macher is survived by two sons, Roland H. "Spanky" Macher and his former wife, Margaret S. Macher, special friend and guardian, for Mrs. Macher during her years in Roanoke, both of Roanoke, and Richard Macher and wife, Elizabeth, of Salem, Va.; one daughter, Robin M. Albrecht and husband, Scott, of Manassas, Va.; one sister, Rose Ackerman, of Salinas, Calif.; two nephews, Richard Ackerman, of Salinas, Calif., and Arthur Ackerman, of Columbia, S.C.; three nieces, Carol Ann Ackerman, of Freemont, Calif., Jenny Kyvelos, of Bedford, Mass., and Ann Korian, of Northville, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Michael A.
