Anne Bowers Duncan ALEXANDRIA - Anne Bowers Duncan, a resident of Alexandria, Va., died from a stroke Oct. 6, 2009, at Virginia Hospital Center. She is survived by her children, Doug Kuett, Allison K. Stover, Beth K. McNally and Janice C. McCormack. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Meghan and Cullen Shannon and Carrie and Ian McCormack; as well as her nephews, David and Andrew Bowers. Anne was born Nov. 1, 1931 in Coral Gables, Fla., to Earnest Bland Bowers and Charlotte Hopkins Bowers. Before graduating from the University of Miami, Anne was a majorette who once set the Orange Bowl on fire with her lighted baton. After graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C., to work for National Airlines where she met and married John A. Kuett. In short order she gave birth to four children, including a set of twins. This marriage ended in divorce. In 1974, she married her cherished John W. Duncan who predeceased her. She was also predeceased by her parents and her brother, David Bowers. Anne worked many years at the Mount Vernon Estate including managing the 1976 Bicentennial Sound and Light Show which was a gift to the United States from France. Later, she became a physician recruiter. After retiring to Virginia Beach she worked at Eastern Virginia Medical School assisting in the training of residents. One of Anne's greatest interests was politics. At various times she served as the president of the Mount Vernon Women's Democratic Club and as a member of the Eighth District Democratic Committee. She managed several state and local campaigns for Democratic candidates and often "recruited" her children as helpers thereby instilling in each of them a lifelong interest in politics. A celebration of her life will be held Friday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m. in Clark House, Annandale, Va., 703-827-0609,, will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. at Saint Aidan's Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach, 757-340-6459,, . Carlton P. Layden SUFFOLK - Carlton Phillip Layden, 83, of the 4500 block of Deer Forest Road, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, in Sentara Obici Hospital. Mr. Layden was born in Perquimans County, North Carolina, and was the son of the late Archie Elfred and Beatrice Copeland Layden. Retired after 35 years with Coca-Cola in Suffolk, he was a member and deacon of Eureka Baptist Church, its Adult Men's Sunday School Class, and served as the director of Sunday school for 13 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, J. Oliver Layden Sr. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Joyce Riddick Layden; a daughter, Sandra L. DeAngelo and husband Gary of Queensbury, N.Y.; two sons, Phil Layden of Corapeake, N.C., and Reginald Layden and wife Terri of Williamsburg; six sisters, Adelaide Hendrix and Doris Monds, both of Tyner, N.C., Helen Riddick of Portsmouth, Clemma Bunch of Belvidere, N.C., Sylvia Miller of Hertford, N.C., and Marlene Bass of Hobbsville, N.C.; five grandchildren, Jonathan Layden, Jennifer Harry and husband Corky, Christy Fitzwater and husband Gilbert, Andy Layden and wife Emily, and Matthew Powell; and four great-grandchildren, Zachary, Jackson, and Ryleigh Harry and Grayson Fitzwater. Oct 13, 2009 Mimi Hart Riggan, 69, of Martinsville, a longtime educator and former Martinsville Police Department citizen of the year, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, at Stanleytown Health Care Center. She was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Nov. 2, 1939, to Charles M. and Minnie Brown Hart. Her parents preceded her in death. She lived in Martinsville most of her life and attended Martinsville schools, where she graduated in 1958. She graduated from Madison College (now James Madison University) in 1962 and taught in public schools in Henry County, Danville, Henrico County and Martinsville. In 1968, she joined the staff of Carlisle School, where she taught second and fifth grades. She served as the school registrar from 1971 until 1993. She was instrumental in establishing the Friend's Field for girls field hockey, was the first cheerleader coach and was head of alumni affairs until 1991. Along with her sister, Lucy Hart Davis, and her stepmother, Margaretta G. "Margo" Hart, she established the Hart gym at Carlisle in 1984. She also was a member of the Carlisle Founder's Society and the SPCA, and she was a sustaining member of the Charity League of Martinsville and Henry County. After many years of volunteer service with the Martinsville Police Department, she was honored with its citizen of the year award in 1991. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. Surviving are her sister and stepmother, both of Martinsville. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Ellen Hanckel officiating. Charlie L. Redmon WANCHESE - Charlie L. Redmon, 59, passed on to heaven Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, at his residence surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Portsmouth, he was preceded in death by his parents, John R. Redmon and Ilene M. Molloy, and by a son, Jeffery "Hayes" Redmon. Mr. Redmon is survived by a daughter, Holly Leonard and husband Keith of Wanchese, N.C.; a son, Charlie S. Redmon of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Betty Ann Redmon of Portsmouth and Linda Molloy and husband James Charlet of Salvo, N.C.; a brother, J. Wayne Redmon and wife Cathy of Carrollton, Va.; a grandson, Victor "Hayes" Wilson; a special sister-in-law, Mary Redmon; two nieces; three nephews; and three great-nieces; and three great-nephews. After leaving high school, Charlie successfully completed the machinist apprentice program with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a former owner/operator of a trucking company, most recently a machinist with Harbor Welding, and was an avid fisherman. One of Charlie's greatest joys was spending time with his family and grandson. After moving to Wanchese he soon discovered that "secret fishing spot" that brought him many peaceful hours. Whether among friends, co-workers, or folks new to the area, Charlie never seemed to know a stranger. He had a cheerful disposition that affected all those around him. He was a loving father who was always willing to stand by his family. A memorial celebration of Charlie's life is scheduled Saturday, Oct. 17, at 3 p.m. It will be held at Barefootin' (a rental home) located at 4809 S. Virginia Dare Trail, Nags Head, NC 27959. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Kerr Steeg of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Sondra Lindstrom and her husband Dink and Lynnae Rea and her husband Daniel, all of Virginia Beach, and son, David Steeg of Chapel Hill, N.C.; five grandchildren, Robert Lindstrom (wife Laurel), Eric Lindstrom, Megan Lindstrom Tolson, Nathan Rea and Katelyn Rea Teixeira (husband Filipe); seven great-grandchildren, Jenna and Ethan Lindstrom, Peyton and Triston Lindstrom, Ally and Shane Tolson, Chloe Teixeira; sister, Elaine Steeg Sterner of Johnstown, Pa.; and his beloved dog, Jake. He was predeceased by his first grandson, H.E. (Eddie) Lindstrom III. Elvin was born Aug. 12, 1927, to the late Florence Wacker and Herman Steeg in Johnstown, Pa. He graduated from Conemaugh Township High School in 1945 and received his college degree in business from the University of Pittsburgh. He served 30 years as a supply officer in the U.S. Navy. After retirement from the Navy, he worked with Q.E.D. Systems for 15 years. Cmdr. Steeg was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Laskin Road where he served as Sunday school superintendent, president of the congregation, church trustee, and was their financial secretary for 30 years. A funeral will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel. The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Laverne Harris, Curtis Primm, Elizabeth Wilcox, and niece Leda Hunt who cared for him in the home. Henry Lloyd Winstead Henry Lloyd Winstead, 59, of Concord, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009. He was the loving husband of Teresa R. Winstead for 14 years. Henry was born April 5, 1950, in Brodnax, a son of the late Paul Winstead and Katie Ferrell Winstead. Henry worked as a truck driver for W.E.L. Inc., was an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Joshua and Brandon Winstead, both of Concord, Katie Kelly, of South Hill, Joey Winstead, of Kembridge, Crystal Hatcher, of South Hill, and Jeffrey Winstead, of Fla.; three sisters, Pauline Edmonds and Ruby Thomas, both of South Hill, and Lena Prater, of N.C.; four brothers, James and Dickie Winstead, both of South Hill, Jeff Winstead, of Brookneal, and Jack Winstead, of Brodnax; eight grandchildren; and two special and loving sister-in-laws, Michelle Powell and her husband, Don, of Concord, and Crystal Campbell and her husband, Johnny, of Concord. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one brother, Butch Winstead; and one sister, Ruth Crowder.
